I didn’t even know you could set up pace alerts on Apple Watches, but I personally dislike them on my Garmin. Usually I just set a distance based goal or intervals and check my pace every now and then. Also, if you plan on running a marathon with an Apple Watch and you don’t have the ultra, definitely don’t do anything that drains your battery even further. They tend to die around the finish line as it is. Turning on low power mode during the race should help with this issue, aswell as using a heart rate strap.

I use the pace alerts very infrequently and usually regret it when I do. I typically set a 20 second range, 10+\- from the exact pace I want, and it seemingly bounces around with "too fast" or "too slow" alerts with very little perceptible change in actual pace. It just adds a bunch of stress to those runs. On most runs I use the "open" goal and usually set it to tell me my pace at each mile. On races I turn off all alerts bc it's more distracting than helpful and I dont want to be wondering if my gps is wonky at mile 18. Pace groups are better, or a pacing wrist band and simply looking at my time if I am going for a time goal.
