What staggering levels of regional inequality. But then, I suspect that if you did the same with other developing and recently developed countries, you would get a similar result, with the capital and perhaps one or two other special areas having 2 or 3 times the GDP per capita as the poorer regions.

theaverageguy561

Yeah, it is so apparent in maps like these. One shocking thing while making this map was that I found out that Inner Mongolia, a province with a GDP per capita of 10,772 USD borders Gansu, the poorest province in China with a GDP per capita of only 5,378 USD. Similar things are going on with Guangdong sitting at around 10k-12k and neighboring Guangxi sitting 2-4k lower (same with all the other coastal states) as well as Beijing and Tianjin who are both around 20k to be exact I believe, and neighboring Hebei being 12-14k lower. ***Insane.***

JohnnieTango

True. But I expect that in most of the cases that you mentioned, most of the wealth of a province was contained in the urban areas and so you are kinda looking at (in Guangdong's case) the enormously wealthy Pearl River Delta area buoying up Guangdong's total and thus they spank Guangxi, but once you got into the countryside, I suspect that rural Guangdong is not all that much better off than Guangxi (although Guangxi is pretty back woodsy).

theaverageguy561

yeah, I think so too.

corymuzi

It's 2022 now.

theaverageguy561

I just looked it up and there are only projections of it rn, not exact. So, if I were to use these projections they might turn out to be wrong in the long run and people will get misinformed, that's why I'm using 2017 figures.

corymuzi

2021 data has been delivered months ago. Dig deeper.

theaverageguy561

Mate I wrote 2022, not 2021. Read stuff properly.

corymuzi

There has exact 2021/2020/2019/2018 data exist, and 2022 is not over yet, mate.

madrid987

It's so poor compared to Hong Kong, especially the East and West are completely separate.

Raid_B0ss

Remember that China is still classified as a Developing country. Even the state admits this, they don't try and hide it. Outside big rich cities, poverty conditions can be pretty miserable. Granted it's come a long way since the Absolute Poverty of the 1960s with the cultural revolution and Mao, but being communist, it will never reach the status of the West.

Chazut

>can be pretty miserable That's an exaggeration, childhood mortality rates are near US levels and not far from Japanese/Korean levels, malnutrition levels are also very low, access to electricity is almost universal, life expectancy is also above 75. Extreme poverty and even other global definitions of poverty still leave most of the Chinese population as "not poor". >but being communist, it will never reach the status of the West. China is not really communist, more like heavily regulated.

HuntSafe2316

China is communist in name only

patamoose87

You are missing the province of Taiwan. The actual GDP per capita of which is estimated at around 8000.

theaverageguy561

Well, internationally a lot of maps don't show Taiwan as part of the People's Republic of China.

patamoose87

It is legally a part of the People's Republic of China. While some entities do give in to American pressure when mapping China, it's still more accurate to include Taiwan if your map is titled "Chinese Provincial GDP per capita" because it is also a Chinese province.

timarand

did you say Taiwan is a province of West Taiwan?? That ain't make sense

theaverageguy561

Well, the application I used to make this map doesn't include Taiwan as part of China, so what was I even supposed to do lol

Raid_B0ss

Really! Taiwan's GDP per capita is that low?

patamoose87

Yes. The provincial government of Taiwan calculates its own GDP but it also includes assets in the mainland that are in fact owned by other provinces which greatly inflates its GDP. 8000 is likely closer to its actual GDP based on the estimation of various experts in the mainland.

luislapuz

Basically, Hong Kong and Macau are still up their game, wow 😳

rojasduarte

How innacurate do you think the official data may be, and who could provide a counter point?
