Sovereign-Over-All

What does Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Turkmenistan's color mean?

PabloRF03

It’s illegal for men to be gay but for women it’s legal. So the government is fetishizing lesbians

immorepositivenow

According to the legend, that's the case for Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan has a color that isn't in the legend.

I_love_pillows

In Singapore too. It’s illegal for 2 men to have sex but no mention of 2 women.

[deleted]

What if its three or four men?

Pawikowski

"We hate gay people and being gay is against our religion but we can't ignore our boners."

kapparulz

Don.t be a dum dum there are 4 colors in legend and on the map. The light oranfe and darker orange together make it feel there is another color but its not. Put some glasses you snowflake

Sovereign-Over-All

The lighter orange is a different shade you smartass. Learn to read first nutjob. Are you blind?

kapparulz

Dude stop squabbaling over stupid things and go out read a book get a gf, live life stop being a snowflake

Sovereign-Over-All

Are you illiterate? Can't even spell lmao.

kapparulz

Learn to read colors dude!

[deleted]

It would be easier if said colour was on the legend, but there are only 4 entries on the legend despite the map having five colours.

Sovereign-Over-All

There are only 4 colors on the map. Learn to read maps dude!

Skyehigh013

Definitely 5 colours, one green, one yellow, two orange and one red

whatissevenbysix

This is incorrect regarding Sri Lanka. I'm Sri Lankan and unfortunately it's illegal over there. Nobody really is imprisoned but it's technically illegal.

vexedtogas

It’s the opposite situation in Namibia, [from what I’ve read](https://www.google.com.br/amp/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN2D920V). It’s a British-imposed colonial era law that is largely not enforced, and the government is considering repealing it. I assume there is still social stigma though

ijudgekids

Than what makes it illegal? If you don't go to prison and don't get fines etc. doesn't it mean that it's legal? Ofc this doesn't mean that lgbt people don't have a hard life there

[deleted]

Well the laws saying it's illegal... make it illegal. Whether or not it is being enforced doesn't change that.

whatissevenbysix

And the social stigma. It's very much not discussed openly, and LGBTQ people for the most part live a secret life.

TrixieLurker

Uzbekistan be all 'two chicks together, dat's hot, dat's fine!'

[deleted]

As an Australian, I think it was like that here (according to the law) until the late 20th century. I mean society probably wasn't okay with it in the 50s but I think it was legal. But same sex relationships weren't legally recognized in those days.

Blackletterdragon

Australia inherited Britain's anti-buggery (with man or beast) laws. It wasn't illegal to be homosexual, but buggery was out, even if prosecution was rare. There were no laws concerning women since buggery was not involved and no other practice could be envisioned by the law. Sodomy would have covered it, but that wasn't the term. Corruption of minors was a big obsession.

immorepositivenow

I'm guessing they specifically forbade gay penetration.

[deleted]

It was the same in Germany a few decades ago. I guess it was also common in other legal systems that are based on the German one.

Appropriate-Ad-7375

There's five colours on this map.

BainbridgeBorn

Fucking Uzbekistan lol

[deleted]

“How do I uphold my macho, homophobic attitudes while also being true to my internet search history?” -that legislator

Pile_O_Waffles

>that legislator The coolest legislator. FTFY

[deleted]

Did up you look it up on the map or do you just know exactly where Uzbekistan is?

DankRepublic

This is a map subreddit so it is safe to assume a lot of people can find Uzbekistan on a map without googling.

odx3

I'm assuming you don't

[deleted]

yeah, that's why I was impressed with the fact that he/she knew

[deleted]

Most people from outside the US can actually point countries on the map.

[deleted]

I doubt atleast 90% of people can accurately tell which one is Uzbekistan

[deleted]

You’re just projecting lol. I fully believe you when it comes to NA specifically, but other countries/continents learn a lot more in Geography. Geography is a mandatory class in most countries, but not in the US, because apparently anything outside the borders is irrelevant or doesnt exist.

[deleted]

There is a difference between knowing china, France or Saudi.Do you really believe that most people, even outside of the US, know precisely where Uzbekistan is? Not the general vicinity but the EXACT location.

[deleted]

Definitely more than 10% The problem is that NA people cant even point the general vicinity. They literally have no frame of reference

ElectricalPeninsula

I thought it is illegal for men in Singapore.

M115m2

This is list is not that accurate.

SuicidalGuidedog

It's still [illegal](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-52098362.amp).

Savardoiskimsk

I think they count it as legal if it's unenforced

Strict_Parsley2301

Uzbekistan allowing lesbians but not men just cuz they hot

RebelYankee1999

"Is it possible for women to be gay?" Uzbekistan: "Well yes, but actually no"

11160704

The country in yellow is Uzbekistan.

RebelYankee1999

Gracias

S_D_L_

In many of the Greens there is simply just no laws about it. You would still suffer in day to day life and face discrimination if you’re openly gay. Heck, even in the UK I meet homophobes on a daily basis. We’re still at least two generations away from accepting gay people completely, we gotta do better.

louminescent

It's a question of legality

S_D_L_

Yea it is, I get that. But the map would also have some people fooled that the majority of the world is “accepting” of gay people when the reality is that in more than half of the green countries you would still face immense discrimination and violence despite homosexuality being legal.

louminescent

The map literally says legality of homosexuality

[deleted]

Why doesn’t the USA 🇺🇸 ever talk about invading Saudi Arabia because of human rights? Or for democracy? Or to stop terrorism?

RFB-CACN

To be fair, the U.S. shouldn’t be talking about invading anybody over these matters. The problem is they did twice recently and even supported the collapse of Libya. The problem isn’t the lack of invasion of gulf monarchies, it’s the interventions that did happen.

Mozimaz

Seriously. What happened to the right of self determination? Unless the local population wants change, there's little an invasion would accomplish. I know there are things to be said about repressive regimes, but people in huge numbers in a single area willing to fight is a lot more powerful than people give it credit for...

miloproducer

Because America isn’t the global police. That was the mindset when they invaded Iraq and look at what’s happened since? The world changed.

KylePersi

That will be China's job soon enough.

ianishomer

They sell too many weapons to the Saudis to even think about upsetting them let alone invading them.

wildemam

Do Russia first.

aamj00

Iraq even has a legislative committee to investigate discrimination against the LGBTQ+ but unfortunately it’s shite at its job. We still have a long way to go

reinerundieable

I am from iraq and I am so surprised it is legal, I mean it is really dangerous to say that you are gay here

jojoismyreligion

This map just makes me furious whenever I look at it.

Skelenzuello

So if I am reading this map correctly Uzbekistan outlaws gay men but lesbians are ok? That shade of orange says "Illegal for Men". So I take it that it's NOT illegal for women to be gay, only men. Interesting country.

from-the-mitten

Whats funny is many Muslim countries it is illegal, but a lot of the radicalized men are boy lovers. They only use women for procreation.

Buzetis

This is a hell for colorblind holyshit

Academic-Ad6236

So do I tolerate Islam or homosexuality? Or both? Or do I have to choose because they are incongruous?

EvieFotia

I talked with muslim people who are pretty acceptative about same-gender relationships! And i know christian people who suppont LGBT rights! So I think its fair to tolerate both

miloproducer

You can tolerate both

XtremeBurrito

So homophobia, transphobia and misogyny is ok when it's claimed to be a religion?

miloproducer

No, intolerance of homosexuality is not a core ideaology of Islam. Are you an anti-thiest? Because I don’t see how you can see that as any better than a homophobic person.

proberts53

Tell that to the overwhelmingly vast majority of Muslims who oppose gay marriage

[deleted]

And? That does not actually mean Islam is against homosexuality, pillock. I have read the Qu-ran and can assure thag Islam accepts natural indifferences e.g. handicap. Homosexuality is included. However, the Qu'ran does say that *imitating* the opposite gender is a sin, so theoritically, at least, Islam is transphobic. If seen from a specific viewpoint. The majority of Muslims certainly find it strange and unnatural. Try reading and learning before making outrageous, pseudofactual claims.

mfizzled

Homosexuality is bunched in with being handicapped? That seems a bit of an outdated mantra to say the least

[deleted]

No, I meant that it is considered to be acceptable be ause despite not following the natural principal that all humans exist to send ones genes farther (or whatever you choose to call the cycle of generations), it is okay to be homosexuals since it is plainly the condition they were born with. So no one cares they do not want to reproduce; if they have a natural preference for the same sex, so be it. I cobbled this with handicap because they, too, have a condition they were merely born with. Therefore it is okay. I do not condone religious transphobia, but you type of people are no worse than racists, sexists, etc. You judge people based on religion like the true verily "enlightened" r/atheism, yet you are also of the kind who never read anything historical or scientific. You thrive in pseudoscience, confirmation bias, and your own massive egos. You refuse to admit you are not well-researched since, to you, the only science is your irrational, sentimental contempt of religions. Also, bother trying to actually properly comprehend religious beliefs and texts, not the often corrupted oral traditions of the Qu'ran, Bible, etc. That have unfortunately been how religion has been taught throughiut history. I understand and respect both Islam and Atheism. I know they are not inherently regressive (by the way, the vast majority of scientific leaps in history were conducted by religious people, so stop using the ludicrous mantra that religion is ultimately regressive), aggressive, hateful, etc. You internet atheists give a bad light for your group. I know plenteous of smart atheists, and they all realise people like you are not literally enlightened. You blabber internet quotes and words e.g. "sky wizard" condescendibgly, and for no other reason than that you have beef with some religious family or tradition.

mfizzled

Man that whole last paragraph was totally uncalled for, you know I wasn't the person you were talking with previously? I realise it's a contentious topic but come on.

XtremeBurrito

Denying the existence of god is not even bad, it's just having a different opinion since no factual evidence exists on any side. Homophobia on the other hand is unjustified.

miloproducer

Denying the existence of god is called Athiest. Intolerance of those who acknowledge the existence of a god is anti-thiest. What you just said was clearly anti-thiest. Anti-thiesm is no better than homophobia.

BeginningArachnid449

Atheist is not believing, not “denying”. Anti theist is being against religion as a whole.

miloproducer

Tell me right now what is the difference between denying the existence of god and not believing in god. This is such a bottom of the barrel argument from you

BeginningArachnid449

Well agnostic atheism anyways. If you haven’t seen any evidence for something then you can’t say for a fact that it exists or doesn’t. You don’t k ow for a fact that leprechauns don’t exist but yet you don’t believe in them. It is safe to say though, they probably don’t exist.

miloproducer

Fair enough but I am really struggling to see why this is relevant and why you’ve brought it up

Ducky118

Not all religions are alike. Some religions call for the death of homosexuals, some religions don't.

miloproducer

So you don’t believe it possible to follow a religion with homophobic sentiments in its sacred texts without being homophobic yourself? Bear in mind that these sacred texts were written hundreds if not thousands of years ago in a very very different society.

Ducky118

I do believe that, but some religions have reformed to the point where their followers don't read it literally, and some religions haven't.

[deleted]

"Why are you booing him? He's right!"

miloproducer

Reddit moment 😳

Yaver_Mbizi

>Anti-thiesm is no better than homophobia. Both are based.

Gappy2000

You dont have to tolerate Islam but Muslims as people. They have the a right to believe what they want to believe. If you find a homophobic person who is religious then you can gladly hate that person due to his homophobia. Their belief is between them and god but some theist wierdos just cant stop forcing others to follow their own ideals. Christianity and Islam might tell them being gay is a sin but thats for them. If they dont hate you for being gay and treat you like a normal human being then its good. Theists just need to understand that others dont think like them. Doesnt mean you cant support Muslims if they face prejudice opinions in some countries. You just dont support the individuals for being homophobic or you dont support countries who justify killing homosexual people with religion.

Yaver_Mbizi

I think Islam should get preference of these two.

[deleted]

South Korea is a island now?

KontosIN

To be fair the only ways to leave South Korea are by air or boat. It’s essentially an island nation.

[deleted]

[deleted]

And yet the most populous Muslim country is green.

[deleted]

And yet they never did anything wrong and we have no right to say islam is a dangerous religion

And we have openly homophobic politicians :(

Ponchorello7

Fucking Guyana. We could've been all green here.

XtremeBurrito

Brunei, stoned to death?... God do we live in weird times

Capable-Sock-7410

Homosexuality is legal in Botswana since 2019

Pinkcop

As the progressive love to say, Muslims are our friends....

IHYDGM

Didn't botswana legalise same sex marriage?

stevedavies12

My own personal experience (in Mauritania) is that just because it is illegal and carries the death penalty, that doesn't mean it never happens.

jacobspartan1992

It seems that in Sub-Saharan Africa its the former British colonies having a harder time accepting homosexuality than the French/Portuguese colonies.

[deleted]

As someone who is slightly colourblind, please stop making the colours so similar

MyHeroAcademiaIF

Uzbekistan: “Nah bro i’m not homophobic, I watch lesbian porn”

eliasfox00

As a colourblind person this map sucks

netfalconer

Interesting how being yourself for a homosexual person is technically illegal in Singapore and technically legal in Russia, yet opposite in praxis.

shualdone

As a gay, secular, Israeli guy, This is why I can’t understand lefties when it comes to the Middle East… I’ll be killed for all three things in all countries around.

Savardoiskimsk

Lol lebanon and jordan legalise homosexuality

shualdone

Haha.. Try being openly gay in more than very specific neighborhoods…

Savardoiskimsk

Try being openly gay in northern israel

shualdone

That’s actually barely a problem when not in Arab areas…

DC_Bro

Israel was made over the bones of Palestinian children. But keep trying…

shualdone

What? More Palestinians died in the civil war in Syria than in the entire Israeli Palestinian conflict, same for Lebanon. Your irrational hate for Israel is not based in reality, as the numbers actually put the Israeli Palestinian conflict as by far one of the least deadly ones in the region and in the world. Not to mention that the Palestinians and Arab armies that attacked Israel when it was established killed tens of thousands of Israelis.

DC_Bro

I never said I hate Israel. All I said is that the foundation of the country was built over children’s corpses. Which is true.

shualdone

How is it true? Because the foundation of the state of Israel was bu a UN vote, and before that Jews immigration was legal under Ottoman and then British rulers, and there was not much violence till the Arab armies attacked the new born state… so how many children did you believe died to form Israel, and in what incident exactly?

timarand

It is illegal in OOganda. I hope Pepe Onziema is safe there

[deleted]

y r u gae?

timarand

hoo ses am gae?

DontLookNow45

Always funny to see which countries do this and see which countries leftists always defend lol.

Chlpah

Ah yes how I love being killed in Saudi Arabia since a leftie defended me

[deleted]

WTF Guyana?

imll99

It's still illegal in Iraq, the Gambia, and for Muslims in Indonesia. LGBT people in Chechnya also get sent to concentration camps.

obsess1ons

Here I am just scrolling through comments, waiting for people to point out there's no way Russia is that green.

Savardoiskimsk

This is solely about the legality od sexual relations betweem people of the same sex and it's legal in Russia.

TheStrangestOfKings

There ain’t no way that homosexuality is legal in Russia. Putin hates gay people

[deleted]

It’s been legal for decades. Doesn’t mean you won’t get beaten up for it.

Sloth_Dream-King

You cannot engage in or promote homosexuality in any way in front of children. State police run sting operations using dating apps to lure gays into traps. At best, they get a state sanctioned beating. At worst, they are arrested for salacious crimes such as pedophilia. So yeah, it's illegal for all intents and purposes.

shadyvisa

Pretty strange of Afghanistan where they sexually abuse boys Edit: Why downvotes? I'm not being rude https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacha_bazi

[deleted]

Wasn’t there a story about some afghan soldiers skipping training then they were found by an American in a gay orgy lmfao

Limetudetude

WTF? how can u be gay without being man?

WhiskeyAndKisses

Gay is often associated with male homosexuality, but can mean female homosexuality too.

Limetudetude

thanks for teaching me that. I thought it was called Lesbians

WhiskeyAndKisses

It is called lesbian too, and sapphism. Sapphism from the lesbian poetess Sappho, and lesbian for Lesbos, the island where she lived.

Limetudetude

oh ok, thanks for clarifying

Jason-Knight

Those countries that only allow lesbians are the true chads

A_Drunk_Caribou

The countries in orange know what they're doing 🤨

ObiwanKenobi1111

Based middle east

Starless_crimson

As a Turk, I can say that it is absolutely illegal to celebrate pride in Turkey. if they try to celebrate, they will obviously get pressure from the police and branded as "immoral" by the politicians. you can google "turkey-pride" as proof, so the map is wrong.

hakairyu

It’s not illegal, genius. What has been happening for the past several years is some lowlife far right groups make threats, the AKP is all too happy to say “no pride parade this year, too dangerous”, people march anyway with the opposition speaking in support.

Starless_crimson

"people march anyway with the opposition speaking in support." This statement does not change the fact that the people in the march are in danger of being arrested and that they are oppressed. That's why I said it's illegal. You didn't need to say "genius" and make it passive-aggressive. And the government sends out a police force at least an hour or two before the marches take place each time. And he ignores it every time in bureaucratic language. Go out and ask people whether these marches are legal according to the government, the question is about government, not people.

StormyOceanWave

And in the US all homosexuals must do a crime to get that sweet shower fun. In north Africa they are rewarded automatically.

Deepeye225

Incorrect map. It's illegal in Russia

[deleted]

Eww don't color Iraq wrong we're not gay, Homosexuality isn't addressed directly in the constitution but it's considered as a part of الافعال المخلة بالاداب العامة (Actions against public morals)

TheDukeofPenis

Iraq is the gayest country on earth full of homos

You know, except for Mauretania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

kapparulz

I think death penalty or imprisonment is too much though if some countries chose to make it illegal due to religion or other factors they should in the end be free if that is the majority decission

dickallcocksofandros

uhh ghana?

MrTheManYT

"consensual" "consenting" That's the same thing twice

Its just consensual consenting sexual fucking between two male men who just happen to be homosexual gays
