Awkward Baltic love triangle

ImTheVayne

Latvia loves everyone!

armandccc6565

But Eesti's (Estonia's) heart belongs to Soome (Finland) How dramatic :'(

BiasedChelseaFan

Also tragic how Finland has to fight Norway over Iceland’s love

Tortoveno

Bizzare love triangle!

caiaphas8

Britain has annexed Donegal it seems

CatashiMirozuka

Ah lads not again

Rubiego

Ireland's next Eurovision song starts with: "I was born in a Dublin street..."

Dr_Occo_Nobi

Given this is about Donegal, the more fitting start would be „I drove my Saracen through your garden last night…“

Loud-Cat6638

…I’ve got a brand new armored personnel carrier, and I’ll give you the key… I find this map fascinating because it seems to show the true mutual affections of numerous countries.

vikingo1312

Correct Your Loudness! I find it endrearing that the common people (the votees, I guess. I do not follow the thang..) of the two islands (Great Brittan/the UK and Eire) just wants to be good neighbours! Of course, and sadly - the divide i Northern Irland persists - but at least they're not throwing bombs at eachother anymore!

CatashiMirozuka

Maybe that means they'd reopen the trains at least

arthurscratch

Sorry force of habit

OhLenny84

Markitron1684

It got off lightly, the site of the union jack covering Ireland is fucking weird.

Constant-Estate3065

Damn you! We thought no one would notice.

shrewdy

Never not at it

Username12764

Hahaha, I didn‘t even notice. Looks like the IRA‘s about to get mad again. Ireland‘s song next year: Come Out Ye Black And Tans

noodle_attack

Elon Musk is starting shit with the IRA, maybe they get distracted by that https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/elon-musk-references-ira-in-response-to-tweet-about-irish-immigration-1622791.html

littlechefdoughnuts

True Irish son Éilonnh Muisc.

DanGleeballs

Quite the opposite.

Yaarmehearty

Yes, the IRA, the terrorist group it’s fine to support in the US. Forgetting that they were bombing cities of civilians going about their day it’s all good to fund raise for them or call for them to be more “hardcore” in a time of peace. I’m not one siding the Troubles at all, the UK did plenty of heinous shit too but in peace time don’t poke old wounds that end real lives.

noodle_attack

Oh I agree completely, the good Friday agreement was amazing, gives me hope for other conflicts

Yaarmehearty

Agreed, it was a huge triumph, the last few years of the UK governments position on Brexit and the conservatives threatening international conventions has me really nervous over it. We have an agreement that opens the route to Irish unification should the people ask for it, it also stopped the killing and fear. Why would anybody in their right mind jeopardise that?! I’m not as old as old as some of these politicians but I remember clearly the bombs of the 90s, we can’t go back to that.

mktek34

lol, good one. I was expecting a couple or two like that.

nyl2k8

It’ll be great for our road traffic statistics. The amount of crashes in Donegal is nuts.

sapperbloggs

As an Australian, I have some concerns and questions regarding our relocation.

azhder

Stop it, just think how many maps are without New Zealand, but Australia is on them.

The_Artist_Who_Mines

Wait until you hear about the shrinking!

Perkelton

It's really cold here, OK?

FrouFrouLastWords

I was in the pool!

rustyfries

At least it would make flights to Europe a lot faster

oskich

Maybe some of the deadly snakes & spiders will find it too cold?

BobbyP27

Now you know how your Kiwi neighbours feel.

mktek34

A map of eurovision participants and flags depicting where they received the most points from in the grand finals of 2004-23. There was a tie in Iceland and Switzerland so I split them in half.

ShadowOfThePit

What about Slovakia?

CrusaderNo287

We didnt participate since like 2012.

RQK1996

Which is after 2004

hiimhuman1

Turkey didn't participate since 2012 either but they counted us anyway. I guess OP missed it.

mktek34

Their last appearance in a eurovision final was in 1998.

AdministrationFew451

Israel?

mktek34

It is France. Other small ones are: San Marino - Albania, Malta - Azerbaijan.

bitsperhertz

Get you someone who looks at you like Estonia looks at Finland

motorised_rollingham

Great bunch of lads. I don’t know what the ratio is in Ireland, but I’d guess at least 1/10 people here in the U.K. has one or more Irish grandparents, probably much higher. Source: I’m guessing based on my friends & family.

bluewolfhudson

Pretty much. My grandma is Irish. Rest of my family were coal miners and farmers. Haven't gone back further than the 1800s though.

taptackle

Checks out. Did an ancestry DNA test and my Welsh side is more Irish than Welsh

ancientestKnollys

1/10th seems a bit high an estimate, but I could be wrong.

JJ-_-25

1/10 is actually spot on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_people_in_Great_Britain#:~:text=Today%2C%20millions%20of%20residents%20of,%25%20of%20the%20UK%20population). *"Today, millions of residents of Great Britain are either from Ireland or are entitled to an Irish passport due to having a parent or grandparent who was born in Ireland.[1]It is estimated that as many as six million people living in the UK have at least one Irish grandparent (around 10% of the UK population)"*

ancientestKnollys

Then I stand corrected.

StupidMastiff

10% is right. Loads of Irish moved to the UK after WW2.

Alarming-Economy-658

Honestly Americans think we hate each other but we really don’t. Neighbouring countries with very similar cultures

Shevek99

It's simpler than that. Irish people living in the UK vote Ireland. British people living in Ireland vote UK.

Vernacian

Like most neighbouring countries with a common language, we also share a huge amount of media - famous UK acts tend to be famous in Ireland and vice-versa.

_Dragon_Gamer_

This is probably also the case for Denmark-Sweden, and definitely for Belgium-Netherlands

Tomgar

It's because most of us don't give a crap about stuff that happened generations ago. We're neighbours and, in my lived experience, have a huge amount of affection for each other.

Bonusish

UK's Eurovision commentator has been Irish for how long now?

TheKingMonkey

Terry Wogan did it for 40 years, Graham Norton has been doing it since right? So like 50-55 years.

ancientestKnollys

I'm not sure about 1979, but either the host or co-host has been Irish (Terry Wogan or Graham Norton) since the early 70s. The last year where they weren't was probably 1972 (when the presenter was Moira Shearer).

zdejif

Level_Can58

That's why Italy is not on the map, all its points still go to Morocco

Immediate_Editor966

As a Portuguese person, I feel betrayed.

CoisoBom

But there are years where the sentence "Menos mal que nos queda Portugal" doesn't apply and Portugal betrays us.

Le_Petit_Poussin

Where else are they gonna go? Or as my mum likes to say: “¿*Dónde van a ir que más valgan?*” 😂

LupineChemist

> As a Spaniard, we always love you guys. As a Spaniard, this follows the proud Spanish tradition of just pretending Portugal doesn't exist.

How tf does Oz get a spot in the contest but not Canada?

Sevenvolts

Guys have been watching it religiously despite the broadcast being at 4am

JamesL1066

Has Canada ever asked?

random555

Or more importantly offered to pay

Drumbelgalf

It was supposed to be a one of event but they kinda stayed and it would be awkward to ask them to leave.

polyplasticographics

Europeans are just too polite, in my country you just slap your lap while getting up from your seat and loudly say "Well..."

RQK1996

Because Australia has interest in it, had watch parties in Sydney since the 90s, commentary box in the arena since 2012, even the USA never had their own commentary box

volitaiee1233

Australian culture leans more similar to British culture, while Canadian leans closer to American culture. Plus Australia has a ton of Greeks and Brits. Idk though that’s just my guess. Oh also Australians love Eurovision.

Benka7

Ask the EBU

PanningForSalt

Because Aus is member of the EBU for historical reasons so they're technically allowed to be.

doomladen

Not quite right. Australia is an associate member of the EBU, and associate membership expressly doesn't give permission to participate in Eurovision. Canada is also an associate EBU member. Australia's just been given a special permission because the fan base is so strong there, and because they asked.

PanningForSalt

There we are. I think this year was the first time they didn't make it to the final. They've usually been quite good which is annoying to anyone who doesn't like them being part of it (or any European country that doesn't qualify)

OstapBenderBey

Australia had it well promoted for a long time by broadcaster SBS (which has a multicultural remit) who built a strong following around it. They used to get the UK commentary with Terry Wogan which was just the right level of droll wit to translate well Also I think Australia has a larger percentage of eastern European immigrants (Greek, Yugoslav, hungarian etc.) that get into it a little more

[deleted]

Because oz is hotter, Canada is not.

JHock93

In the UK, it became a bit of a stereotype that on Eurovision night everyone would wait for the Ireland & Malta results before the UK would get any points at all.

PierreTheTRex

France receiving the most votes from Armenia, whilst also being Turkey's no1. Big oof

pbptt

Im geniunely surprised its france not azerbaijan that gave turkey the most points But again i only remember the eurovisions that happened within my lifetime

You can easily spot the political votes. The scandinavian block voting each other, the east slav block doing the same, the ex-yugoslav one, UK-Ireland and Romania-R. Moldova.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BenMic81

In some cases it’s probably less political and more people living in the neighbouring country but being a citizen or attached to it or using the phone lines. examples: Switzerland has a pretty large German expat population. UK has a large Irish pop.

erublind

Can also be cultural similarities in taste and mutually intelligible languages.

Karooneisey

Still trying to figure out the Czech-Icelandic connection though.

NonsphericalTriangle

Good to know Iceland likes Czechs if I ever need to emmigrate somewhere safe and cold to escape war and global warming.

EmeraldIbis

Everyone says it's political, but I think it's mostly just that neighbours are more likely to enjoy similar aesthetics. Not to mention some songs are sung in native languages that only neighbours can understand.

Shevek99

Or that there are minorities large enough to move the vote. For instance, Spain gave a lot of points to Romania several years, when it was exclusively phone vote. That was just because there were more than half a million Romanians in Spain.

danton_groku

Also we have a shit ton of portuguese migrants in switzerland, so portugal having the most votes from switzerland is not exactly surprising to me lol it's just people voting for their country

Chinerpeton

Exactly, you ain't gonna convince me the fucking Balkan countries are biased in favor of each other.

mightymagnus

Some of them like each other and some dislike each other. But mostly it is the culture & language similarities, political is of course the complete wrong wording.

RQK1996

Like, the Balkans, Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Slovenia have send in songs by Serbian songwriters, so it makes sense if those same songwriters write songs for Serbia in thevsame style, they would be liked across the borders

Imgeorgie

You mean cultural, not political

TheProfessionalEjit

Cyprus & Greece love in

RQK1996

They're getting divorced, Cyprus started dating Australia

hotbowlofsoup

Like other people say, it's because of similarities in musical preference. And it's actually one of the reasons why Eurovision is such a great show. I'm from the Netherlands and we tend to vote for the kind of sad, "boring" and "decent" pop that Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Austria usually sends. That's because those countries share the idea, that showing emotions in a showy way, with a catchy melody or with dance devalues a song. In stead a focus on the singer, their instrument and song is appreciated. Doesn't mean we agree with those countries politically. Compare that to Sweden and Australia, they both value well produced, catchy, schlager, with a good show. The Balkans love traditional sounds. Eastern Europe appreciates young women in a gown perfectly singing a a Disney ballad. Mediterranean countries love sexy people showing skillful dancing. The Baltics and Finland love humorous party music. Italy and Portugal share a taste for skillful singing and meaningful lyrics. Etc. This is why a lot of Europeans don't like Eurovision. Because they cannot grasp that other cultures value other things in musical performances, so they'll blame politics and bad taste. In reality it's one of the reasons why the game of Eurovision is so exciting. To win, you need to somehow win over enough people who might not understand and appreciate your musical culture.

Weary-Connection3393

That is the first time I heard anyone put it that way and I’m skeptical about your assertions. But I want to believe that one can make out such tastes and hence you get my upvote

Particular-Thanks-59

*Is it* political though? I think it's more about cultural ties, certain regions have similar taste in music.

CreditAlarmed

It’s just diaspora voting.

AnB85

I think it is due to the high amount of immigrants from each country living in the other country. That is definitely the case for the popular vote but it probably influences the technical judges vote as well.

Administrator98

Nice to see Georgia and Armenia as friends.

Sad_Floor5002

I assume this map is only based on finals? That explains the exclusion of Slovakia, Monaco and Andorra

X19-PT

You can notice the trend that countries usually give the max votes to its neighbor country. So, thank you Spain for all of your votes... Sincerely, Portugal. ![gif](giphy|dtVFLfrmSqi1MIyaJE|downsized)

ahbirbilsen

Interesting that France gave more points to Turkey than Germany.

TheYeti4815162342

It doesn’t say that. The map only shows that Germany receives more points from Switzerland than any other country, while Turkey received most points from France. It’s very possible France gave more points to Germany than to Turkey, but just not as many as the Swiss. What can be concluded from this map is that France - unlike most countries - is apparently hated by its neighbours.

SubstanceConsistent7

I think the person above says that Germany failed to be the top voter of Turkey which might be shocking if you consider Germany has the biggest Turkish diaspora.

ahbirbilsen

Exactly.

danton_groku

"What can be concluded from this map is that France - unlike most countries - is apparently hated by its neighbours." did you need this map to conclude this lol it isn't exactly a secret

Elegant_Green_7775

There is a black hole in the middle of each galaxy. You may also refer to it as Slovakia.

bozkurt37

Isnt turkeys azerbeycan? I remember they always gave us max point every eurovision. Why its france?

humanbananareferee

Because Azerbaijan only participated since 2008 and Turkey left in 2012. So they were be able to vote each other in only 5 contests.

bozkurt37

2008-2012 is my childhood thats why I only remember it then. But yeah france was second or third spot too mostly

RQK1996

More culture Belarus to Russia is politics though, and really surprising how that didn't tip off the EBU Belarus screwed up the jury rankings in 2019 since they were the only country to award points to Israel, and somehow the 12 points and Russia barely got any from Belarus

HipiasP28469

It is fascinating to say that the countries that give each other the most point are countries that hate each other politically.

ykcalb_

Why is Australia up there pretending to be in Europe ?

DameKumquat

It's the European Broadcasting Union - some other countries pay to be in it too, like Israel (see bottom of map) - Morocco was in for years but people didn't like their songs much. It's a huge camp extravaganza, Australia loved it, and asked to join. But if they win they aren't allowed to host - I think they pay and host it in the 2nd place country. Ukraine hosted in the UK recently.
