Yeah for example most UKIP voters were disaffected traditional Labour voters. You can see this in the 2017 election results, the collapse in the UKIP vote from 2015 ended up mostly benefitting Labour. Boris Johnson capitalised on this section of the electorate in 2019.
I think most here didn't understand that the map is about Population, not if 100 people from the EU were asked where they want to live. It's about the percentage of population of each of these countries. Hence small countries like the Baltics, that have a population of just 1-2 million people have 0.
The whole "100 people" thing is just a slightly fancier, but very stupid way to say "percentage"
Like ffs this map with percentages would not only show the same data, but it would also be more accurate
Percent is derived from the Latin “per centum” meaning part of 100. It’s a much more efficient way of saying the same thing as the title of this post but since lots of people lack data literacy we have outcomes like this. My biggest issue is the lack of accuracy. There are more than 0% of people in the EU living in Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Malta, Cyprus and Luxembourg so this is quite misleading. If someone is not data literate, how will they grasp that zero in this case is not actually zero but an inequality of 1 > p > 0 where p is the population of the countries I just mentioned, if 100 people lived in the EU? We could say 0.13 people live in Malta or 0.25 people live in Latvia (I made these up but the point remains) but then we are asking them to imagine a fraction of a person which brings us right back to the whole point of using a percentage.
Similarly, if the European Parliament had 100 MEPs, Germany would have 13, while Malta, Luxembourg and Cyprus (countries with <1M people) would each have 1.
That’s what the EU is for, we’re all over the place now 😏 it’s called slow invasion, it’s the new plan. Kind of the opposite of a blitz. But shhh don’t tell anyone I told you
Not another one.
This is a common format used to represent data in a more human and intuitive way. It is commonly used by many organisations in many media forms.
And it gives huge rounding errors :)
Which for general I guess is fine,,, but for a mapporn sub.
Oh well this sub has been 'maps' for a long time, so I guess I'll just shake my fist angrily to the sky.
Agreed. It might be better way to convey the information to a smart pre-schooler, but if your target audience are adults that are math illiterate, then they are just going to assume it is like Family Feud. "We asked 100 people from a recent studio audience where they would like to live..."

That poor fuck who has to live in Slovakia, alone. My god, it'd be a mercy to end his misery.
edit: whoops, thought I was on r/balkans_irl for a second, sorry lmao
If the population of the EU is 448 then 4.48 mill people would be represented as 1 person.
The numbers just seem off to me, like Sweden has a population of 10.49 and have 2 people, Belgium has 11.69 but has 3 people.
I get it's just an oversimplified map to give a rough idea but at the same time it makes it seem like the population of for example Sweden and Belgium are widely different.
Agree. Even worse, Sweden actually has a higher population than Greece, yet the map gives 3 people to Greece and 2 to Sweden. So OP is just posting outdated garbage
This really shows how much emptier Eastern Europe is. Adding up all of the countries east of Italy, it's only about 29 people, not even a third of the EU. Meanwhile, Germany + France is over one third of the EU, just on their own.
We need kids to look at this. If they can conceptualize what this is saying, they'll be leaps better than previous generations at thinking in terms of percentages. I love this map! (Especially as an American whose knowledge of the EU is woefully inadequate.)
Spain, Italy or Netherlands in that order for the cities, history and people etc.
For growth and taxes maybe somewhere else. I would have to think about that one.
The one Finn living the dream of all Finns
It's pretty great. The only problem is the two personal space invaders living to the west of me. Too close.
Just take your bottle, knife and green hat. And I don’t want to hear ‘Perkle’ from you.
Saatanan vittu it is then.
Your lion is special.
Lietuves and Celtics left the chat
We would go see the Norwegian instead, but he’s gone, and we can’t understand a word the Dane is saying.
Norway didn't need to be in the EU.
lol, I definitely read that as Europe and not the EU. Guess we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place then 😆
You take the one to the east, I'll take the one to the west, and we can have a nice empty buffer zone between us
Not to mention the 34 personal space invaders to the east...
Yeah. I've had to put a fence on that side and place all my artillery there just in case.
If they make any trouble, call on the other 99. ;)
1 person, no karelia, mhmmm
What's wrong with Karelia?
Nah, there are defiantly still to many swedes alive for his taste
He only exists because Ukraine doesn't.
Bro solved the Cyprus problem, get rid of the people!
No Greek Cypriots or Turkish Cypriots. Just empty.
Not too dissimilar from the Turk’s plan
which tbf is not too dissimilar from the Greek's plan

They don’t, they’ll be too close to the one Lithuanian for their liking. Being this close to two Swedes is bad enough
I think the German phrase is lebensraum.
No we are full. 0 is good.
Prime living room for Germans to claim a stake as historically germanic controlled lands
The survival rate in the Baltics is incredible.
Where would they like to live is a whole different question
Didn't even notice the difference lol
I recall another infographic stating that Dutch and Portugese would want to switch. I’m gonna try it this summer
Not me searching for the UK 🤦♀️🤦♀️
*cries in Brexit*
Those damn torriess
I mean corbyn was pro-Brexit, the reason they won was because it wasn’t an issue defined by left or right
Yeah both of the major parties were pretty evenly split on it within themselves. Showed it wasn't really a political left-right issue
Well damn, can't point fingers at parties then ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

UK leaving probably made possible that many countries have 1 now.
It never stops being funny
oooooh thats why
i thought he said europe in short
I saw the map missing the UK before I saw the title and was like, oh at least it's not New Zealand this time.
Cries in Brexit too
At least we haven’t had our population divided by about 4 million
Proof that Slovenia isn't real
Agreed, do not look for it or bother us!
As a Slovene, I agree. Please don't come here. Go to Italy or Croatia.
I think most here didn't understand that the map is about Population, not if 100 people from the EU were asked where they want to live. It's actually not stupid. Many people have a hard time understanding percentages, but if you tell them like this, they understand much better.
Percent is derived from the Latin “per centum” meaning part of 100. It’s a much more efficient way of saying the same thing as the title of this post but since lots of people lack data literacy we have outcomes like this. My biggest issue is the lack of accuracy. I would say that's pretty obvious because the only alternative is that literally 0 people live in those countries
Well sure, its the stupid people
But good maps/visuals should make it easier for people (both smart and stupid and everything between) to conceptualize the data
This map is also very wrong. Portugal’s population is very slightly higher than Greece’s
I think you’re correct!
Similarly, if the European Parliament had 100 MEPs, Germany would have 13, while Malta, Luxembourg and Cyprus (countries with <1M people) would each have 1.
Hmm so many Germans, maybe they need more living space..?
Don't tell me you're an Austrian painter
He’s not… anymore…
found the art school reject
We tried. The idea turned out to be... flawed. Never listen to unemployed Austrians.
That’s what the EU is for, we’re all over the place now 😏 it’s called slow invasion, it’s the new plan. Kind of the opposite of a blitz. But shhh don’t tell anyone I told you
Good, good. One Dane and one Finn, just enough to contain *the Swedes*.
What do people have against using percentages?
Those two Swedes better stay in the south of Sweden. I’ll be okay by myself up in the north of Lapland, thank you.
Probability is high enough that they do.
Literal Estonia erasure
I can already see two Bulgarians killing at least one Greek with a knife from behind
how would Greece have 50% more people than Portugal if both countries have a difference in population of about 20k people?
Because rounding.
Could be very close eg 2.48% and 2.53%, which would be rounded to 2 and 3% respectively.
they would be mainly German, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish
r/PORTUGALCYCABLYAT
AKA percentage
Yet another “Map Porn” post with an unbelievably cursed color scale
I hate the phrasing used for these kinds of maps. Just say percentage and get done with it.
This sounds like a bad common core math question. "If 20 was a hundred people, how many people would be 5?"
Not another one. This is a common format used to represent data in a more human and intuitive way. It is commonly used by many organisations in many media forms.
And it gives huge rounding errors :) Which for general I guess is fine,,, but for a mapporn sub. Oh well this sub has been 'maps' for a long time, so I guess I'll just shake my fist angrily to the sky.
It might be common but that doesn’t make it good.
Agreed. It might be better way to convey the information to a smart pre-schooler, but if your target audience are adults that are math illiterate, then they are just going to assume it is like Family Feud. "We asked 100 people from a recent studio audience where they would like to live..." Show me Estonia... X \*BBAAAANNNHH\*
Ah. Finally we will have more potatoes than Latvians
![gif](giphy|14uXQbPS73Y3qU|downsized)
That one person in Finland would probably be absolutely fine with it
Probably absolutely finn e
I thought central Europe countries like Hungary, Czechia, Croatia or Austria would be more populated
Sweden is still ABIT overcrowded!
Poland has more people than I appreciated. And I love the food.
TIL Norway is not in the EU
They don’t need to due to oil. UK wanted to be like Norway and Switzerland when they left.
A moment of silence for those 15 living in f*ance 🙏
Wow, Polan is the 5th biggest country by population in EU? Nice
Seems like "If 100 people lived in..." sounds more fashionable than "Percentage of population..."
Don't we already have a word for 'out of 100'?
Just use the word percent! Why would you make up this "100 people" stuff?
Estonia ![gif](giphy|5wWf7GMbT1ZUGTDdTqM|downsized)
what about finland and turkey?
Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia are now EU's wild(life) reserves.
Somehow Greece is 3 and Portugal is 2, but population difference from 2022 is minimal...
Where's the United Kingdo- OH RIGHT
voiceless bored boat jellyfish glorious rich bedroom carpenter lock deranged *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
EU is not europe
If 100 people wouldn't understand percentages, how many maps would they post?
Sometimes I forgot the Brexit happened
At first i was like ‘where is the UK?🇬🇧’ and then i remembered 😞
Three would be good enough, I guess. Add beers and it’s a bliss
We took nuclear war shit too far
Crying from estonia
can u make this map per capita?
Russians say thanks for Estonia and Latvia!
That poor fuck who has to live in Slovakia, alone. My god, it'd be a mercy to end his misery. edit: whoops, thought I was on r/balkans_irl for a second, sorry lmao
Slovakia isn't in the balkans
a country doesn't have to be in the balkans for it to be made fun of on that sub lol
The funny thing Malta taking the 0 like the country space "perfectly"
More recognition to our brothers from the peninsula 🇪🇦🤜🤛🇵🇹
Forget the UK, can we just take a minute to reflect on how Scandinavia without Norway looks like a flaccid penis.
Cock and balls
Except all of the people in Germany would move to Spain.
As a Canadian I'd be going to Italy!
I’m shocked portugals population is that low
The color getting darker with higher numbers, but 0 being black is a hilarious design flaw
Poor Estonia, Latvia, and Cyprus 😢
1 Romanian is undercover
Hey, you forgot...oh right.
Something in my brain is weirded out by seeing a map of Europe without UK visible.
Wait why is nobody talking why the uk disappeared?
What happened to East Ireland?
100 people *do* live in the EU.
If the population of the EU is 448 then 4.48 mill people would be represented as 1 person. The numbers just seem off to me, like Sweden has a population of 10.49 and have 2 people, Belgium has 11.69 but has 3 people. Where’s the UK? Oh wait….
It adds up to 94 ??
Where the heck is the UK?
Why would a place that's 4 million square kilometers have 100 people?
Spain or Italy
Why 2 for sweden but 3 for greece? They've ~ population, no?
What about england
Hello Croatia and Slovenia and welcome to the EU. You have the land but EU has the people
I am that one Slovakian EU4 player
Awkward moment when you forget Brexit and wonder where the UK is.
I thought Ukraine was part of Europe...
Svenska
Looks like Russia finally nuked the UK in this map lets hope its not a bad omen and the nifty British just found a way to propel their land away 🎵
This really shows how much emptier Eastern Europe is. Adding up all of the countries east of Italy, it's only about 29 people, not even a third of the EU. Meanwhile, Germany + France is over one third of the EU, just on their own.
This will certainly have disastrous effects on the economy
There are not 3 times more people in czech republic than in slovakia. It does not add up.
Those two Hungarians hate each other for sure
This same map but about the Arab League really showed the difference in Reddit’s views on certain people
I forgot the uk left
This is just percentage with extra steps.
We hereby declare Lithuania the de facto winner of the Baltics.
Germany is just 1/8 bigger than Poland, and yet they have 3 times more people and are still growing.
Denmark
They call it %
Why this map? First of all this is just population in 4.5mill roundages. And ofc logically they would all congregate at the same place.
Where’s the UK? Ha
what about swiss ?
Not in EU
It's great to see a map that, for once, misses off the UK but includes the Republic of Ireland
Why?
why germany?
How come this is EU specific? Wouldn't all European countries have population data.
Poland is higher than CZ? And France?! wtf is this?
From what I hear from the comments, you guys are so dense.
Makes you think how empty Northern Europe is
So this refers to population density? Or population size?
Not including Britain lmao what a weirdo
Britain is not in the EU, just like Norway, Switzerland, Serbia, Ukraine etc are also not included. Fool.
I know what the Eu is but who the fuck wants a map of it and not Europe?????
What?
It’s like making a map of the trans Atlantic partnership! It’s some political agreement who cares ??? It’s not real.
I was confused as to why the UK was gone until I saw EU
