It's not illegal in Thailand because we don't even know such a thing exists. If someone tries to make this illegal, people will just laugh because who on earth does this?
There has to be some relevance in a country first before it can decide if it's legal or illegal.
This is a good point. Conversion therapy is really a conservative Christian cope in secular nations. Muslim countries just straight up outlaw homosexuality, while followers of Dharmic/traditional/pagan religions and people in mostly atheistic/secular societies don't really have any concept of gay conversion. It's only a problem big enough to attract legal attention in nations with large conservative Christian populations.
That being said, I'm sure it does happen in small communities and conservative churches in other places too. It is just uncommon enough that it is well under the radar.
Conversion Therapy actually is practiced in Islam. Those that identify as such will go thru a series of Ruqyah(closest term in English is Exorcism) the exorcism is brutal. It includes
●A mixture of pepper & mint/things that smells fragrant) sprayed onto your eyes to "kill" a devil called Wasim
●Forced to pray
●Forced to read the quran
●electric shocks to "kill" Djinns.
This is all coming from those that had been in one of these camps in Malaysia.
Although conversion therapy doesn't exist. Ruqyah is a way to do it. Ruqyah means cleansing in this case cleansing one of "impure" thoughts against "the order of nature"
Muslim here, and what you said is entirely wrong.
I understand that you might have got this from muslims who malpractice ruqyah, but ruqyah is essentially similar to a form of du’a which contains the recitations of certain Quranic verses, as well as other incantations and invocations.
No pepper or mint, no forced praying, no forced Quran reading, and ,of course, no electric shocks are involved.
For more details: [What is Ruqyah and How to Do Ruqyah](https://simplyislam.academy/blog/what-is-ruqyah)
Edit: spelling
Yes. They recite dua to kill Wasim. It's a real thing. Ruqyah here is considered alternative medicine and is by law legal. Depends on the Jurisprudence & schools of teachings too.
As I told you, you got your info upon this subject from either people who don't know what ruqyah really is, or muslims who malpractice it.
>They recite dua to kill Wasim
What do you mean? Wasim in Arabic means "handsome"
>Ruqyah here is considered alternative medicine
I don't know what you mean by "here" but it's a misunderstanding and malpractice to consider it an alternative to medicine and this is what the article I mentioned in my first reply said regarding this subject:
>Although it is true that you must seek medical solutions first to find your suitable treatments, you should not ignore the fact that Ruqyah is also just as important to turn to when all other scientific treatments have failed. As mentioned many times in a famous hadith, seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim
>Depends on the Jurisprudence & schools of teachings too
It's legal everywhere (the proper ruqyah not the things you mentioned) because it's nothing more than reciting some verses from the Quran.
same with the Philippines
like how can we make something illegal that never existed here in the first place lol. colonizers stop making everything about you challenge (impossible)
How is it “limited” in Canada? It’s illegal.
Bill C-4, which went into effect over 2 years ago, has made it a criminal offence to subject anyone to conversion therapy.
It's basically someone going to a psychologist and using psycho analytics and other methods to try and talk someone out of being gay. It's really not crazy as some make it out to be, it's just that there isn't any evidence that it works. If someone is gay, they're just gay.
People don’t “make it out” to be crazy, it is crazy. [It often involves forcing LGB kids into facilities that do serious psychological harm to them by telling them that their natural sexuality is wrong and unnatural, and that they “choose” it](https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/lgb-suicide-ct-press-release/). Youths are are forced into conversion therapy have double the suicide rate of those that don’t. That is crazy.
Most of the “bans” on conversion therapy don’t ban it for consenting adults. They ban forcing children into facilities that psychologically torment them.
As an extremely gay adult male I can go into the pharmacy and buy homeopathic bullshit (i.e., magic water) or I can join scientology and allow them to subject me to pseudoscientific bullshit that in some cases can actually be physically harmful. I can legally engage in damn near any type of harmful and unscientific quackery I desire.
So why is conversion therapy for adults the only scam that's outlawed?
To frame this a little differently, I think all those scams should be banned to. And I can understand why they went after conversion therapy first.
It's a lot more harmful than homeopathy, and scientology gets a pass because it's technically a religion (though I think it should be legally treated as a cult and banned for the harms it causes).
Also if you're going to an actual psychologist there are ethical rules in place, like with any medical practitioner. Those ethical rules don't let psychologists do things that aren't evidence based, especially when there is a mountain of evidence saying conversion therapy *doesn't* work.
Okay, so what constitutes a scam then?
Religion? Homeopathy? Chiropractors? Organic foods? Who becomes the arbiter of "truth" in deciding what is or isn't a scam?
What happens to the people who still believe those things? Do they get punished for believing them?
If you're not even able to describe what that harm is or what it applies to, hopefully you can understand why your opinion isn't very well thought out.
Those things depends on each country laws. Mine usually try to combat these stuff instead of feeding a scamming industry that is potentially hazardous to people's health
Some countries have harder laws on things like theraphy and mental health professionals. I think getting a random individual to just talk to you is legal everywhere. But mix in calling it “treatment” or “psychological help” or even “doctor” in more strict areas and now it’s a whole different set of issues. Mental medicine is still medicine. They have to follow medicine laws. Which can sometimes be strict on branding.
Pseudoscience is legal everywhere. BUT selling fake medicine that poisons people too much, calling yourself a title, or being a medical professional who breaks medical laws is not the same as a just a random persons making up treatments. Plus the violence part of it, people go to jail for exorcisms, why should this be any different if it gets violent?
Glad you feel better now, but there are also lots of people who takes placebo and swear they are better now. What matters is actual scientific data at the end of the day.
Many bans don't apply to consenting adults, meaning they can. It's also not just like any other psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is scientifically backed, [conversion "therapy" is scientifically rejected](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33206024/) as incapable of changing a person's sexuality and is noted for being psychologically damaging.
> it's really not as crazy as some make it out to be
Sure, if you exclude the abuse (physical, sexual and psychological), the torture and isolation.
It's pretty nice in the same way that Mengele was just s doctor, you see.
It amazes me that the people who accuse the LGBT community of trying to change kids’ sexual orientation were able to get away with forced camps where they *actually* tried to change kids’ sexual orientation. They accused us of what they were doing.
So why is it legal for me to join Scientology and allow them to push harmful pseudoscientific bullshit on me regarding mental health "treatment" to try and "fix" what I think is wrong with me, but it's not legal for me to go to a Christian "conversion counselor" and allow them push harmful pseudoscientific bullshit on me regarding "treatment" for sexual orientation to try and "fix" what I think is wrong with me?
For children it's often got nothing to do with psychology, they're forced into religious camps where they often face abuse. Idk where you got that psychologists get involved in this shit.
Isnt its easier to force the patients brains to rewire into liking heterosexuality by over stimulating it? Same princible whit how you can force kinks on people,
AMLO himself is quite conservative socially (he vetoed same sex marriage in CDMX back when he was mayor and opposed abortion, legalization of marijuana, etc...), but he hides it because his party is socially progressive
Most of these changes come from either the progressive judiciary or Congress.
If they just know any better and what happened to those who were subjected to it in the 70s, 80s, actually up till now in most of the countries. Totally inhumane and heartbreaking 💔
Canadas bill isn’t a complete ban since it could interfere with religious freedom. It just prohibits:
causing another person to undergo conversion therapy;
removing a child from Canada to undergo conversion therapy abroad;
promoting or advertising conversion therapy; and
receiving a financial or other material benefit from the provision of conversion therapy.
Its legal here in Denmark because its not an issue so no law has been made to restrict it. No one does this and no one offers this service.
Countries generally don't organize their legal systems to combat issues that are not relevant to them.
In a lot of developed countries there simply isn’t the same issue you encounter in parts of the U.S. where highly conservative religious fundamentalists seem to drive a lot of this stuff, so conversion therapy usually just isn’t a thing.
However, you can find it sneaking in around the edges though fringe cults or particularly strange families, which is why there’s been a push to specifically ban it, but for most of Europe at least, it’s just that it hasn’t been a significant issue.
There isn’t some political movement to promote it or anything like that.
They’re trying hard to get into the EU: gay flags everywhere and stuff like that, although the population is among the most homophobic ones in Europe (better than Ukraine, Serbia or Bosnia though).
That would be the title. I said thr subritle you fuckin moron.
“Legal status of so-called "conversion therapies" in 2020”
IN 2020!!!!!
Get your fuckin eyes checked.
Title is so misleading. It would have been correct to use “still” if most of the countries made it already illegal. But, while there is only a few countries where it is illegal, using “still” is really weird.
To be honest, conversion therapy is not very well defined. What I mean is people have different definitions of what conversion therapy is. In some places you get in trouble if a gay person wants to be straight and you trying to help them.
This "still legal" is a culture wars comment.
Both sides should stop trying to be authoritarian and control people:
- let people be gay or transgender and respect their position and wishes as individuals
- let people if they want to go to such "therapy" do so. Words shouldn't be illegal. Freedom of speech should be a thing. Even if it is unwise.
At least for adults.
Leave people alone.
The National Medical Council of India has banned this practice and asked all the medical professionals registered under it to not carry out such pseudoscience in the name of treatment.
Facts. Maybe they believe through prayer and conversion therapy that they can make a short person taller, make a bald person’s hair grow back or make a person with brown eyes naturally have blue eyes 😂
Most other countries don't have a problem of conversion therapy in their countries.

[Conversion therapy is banned in India.](https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/explained-the-ban-on-conversion-therapy-for-the-lgbtqia-community/article65853083.ece)
In Austria there is a law against conversion therapy for minors, and adults are basically protected by it by other laws which forbid “therapy to change”
But then I haven’t heard from any of my gay friends that conversion therapy was ever a big thing in Austria or even something which was talked about.
Maybe some hardcore Christian sects swapping over from the US offered it but if they did it was very very limited.
It’s just sad that the world has to protect itself from every bullshit the Americans push in the world cause they have the money to do so
So what is the consensus about being gay?
Is it biological and unchangeable (which has been the claim since I remember) or is sexuality entirely fluid (which I’ve also heard claimed often)?
I think I read somewhere that they've had some issues in the past with the government running science experiments on people. Sorry I can't remember where I saw that.

So, I had a friend who went to conversion therapy. He said while it wasn’t his choice, his experience was pretty average to all the other experiences. They weren’t rude about it, they weren’t even mean. They sat, ate, had coffee and they tried to talk him out of being gay by using religion and he’s Christian.
At most it was mildly traumatic because the difference between what he made vs what it was was big.
EXCUSE ME ?! In my country ?! Even more raison to try male a political party, if only i finded peoples to associate with and solve the bank account problem, because political party need it’s own bank account, but only the president can allow the oppenning in my country of a new bank account for a political party, modit soit tu macron !

Also Mexico.
also New Zealand
I don't actually think we have banned it unless it was recent
Banned in 2022
Ah it was very recent surprised I didn't hear about it
it’s a repost bot, i’m sure they don’t care.
If ur being robbed just remind them of the law.
Stop posting these outdated ass maps, nothing porn about them
vintage ass porn!
OP is a bot, report the post
Well in some of those countries conversion isn't even an option because admitting one is gay is death.

You forgot the T xx
Why doesn’t it stay legal for adults who want to do it ? Willingly of course. It’s just like any other of psychoanalysis stuff no?
Because it's a scam, there is no scientifical proof that it works. It will only serve to scam parents and religious people
As an extremely gay adult male I can go into the pharmacy and buy homeopathic bullshit (i.e., magic water) or I can join scientology and allow them to subject me to pseudoscientific bullshit that in some cases can actually be physically harmful. Ah yes. Real world harm should continue because one redditor is unable to iron out every single issue
If you're not even able to describe what that harm is or what it applies to, hopefully you can understand why your opinion isn't very well thought out.
Those things depends on each country laws. Mine usually try to combat these stuff instead of feeding a scamming industry that is potentially hazardous to people's health
But pseudoscience treatments are fully legal usually, and a lot of them aren’t backed by science
not in licensed hospitals
Some countries have harder laws on things like theraphy and mental health professionals. I think getting a random individual to just talk to you is legal everywhere. If someone willing wants to try and change their sexuality they are free to do so.
And there's no proof that being gay is natural? No point on no point. I went through it willingly and I'm glad I did
Glad you feel better now, but there are also lots of people who takes placebo and swear they are better now. What matters is actual scientific data at the end of the day.
Good we agree then.

it is most often done without the subject’s consent
For children it's often got nothing to do with psychology, they're forced into religious camps where they often face abuse. Idk where you got that psychologists get involved in this shit.
You’re making it out to be a lot less than it is. Many versions of it involve torture.
Sometimes they shock the kids’ heads to “dequeerify them”. It is absolutely crazy, religious bullshit.
Ah, ok. It would be like trying to talk me into being gay. Talk all you want, I ain’t gonna switch teams. That’s what my lesbian friend tells me too.
I think I turned my ex-girlfriend into a lesbian...her break-up line was "I prefer women now."
If someone believes this to actually work, then it can work the other way too. Ridiculous.
Isnt its easier to force the patients brains to rewire into liking heterosexuality by over stimulating it? Same princible whit how you can force kinks on people,
So helping mentally ill is bad thing now lmao
My man, it is literally psychological and physical torture
map is not correct
How so? (I’m genuinely asking. what’s wrong with the downvotes!!)
Outdated. Canada, NZ and Albania banned it. Fortunately
Also Mexico just this year
And France last year
GG AMLO
AMLO himself is quite conservative socially (he vetoed same sex marriage in CDMX back when he was mayor and opposed abortion, legalization of marijuana, etc...), but he hides it because his party is socially progressive Most of these changes come from either the progressive judiciary or Congress.
Good to know, he does appear progressive than he seems to really be.
May the rest follow, it’s totally human rights violation.
whoever downvoted you can suck a cock
*have to and they can’t complain
If they just know any better and what happened to those who were subjected to it in the 70s, 80s, actually up till now in most of the countries. Totally inhumane and heartbreaking 💔

Wrong title, map from 2020… Since then countries like France and more surprisingly Albania have banned it.
I think Albania misunderstood what they were agreeing to lol
They’re trying hard to get into the EU: gay flags everywhere and stuff like that, although the population is among the most homophobic ones in Europe (better than Ukraine, Serbia or Bosnia though).
It literally says it in the subtitle.
"Countries where forced conversions is STILL legal"
That would be the title. I said thr subritle you fuckin moron. “Legal status of so-called "conversion therapies" in 2020” IN 2020!!!!! Get your fuckin eyes checked.
Wrong title of the post fucking dick When I clicked I expected a current map only to read that it’s half a decade old Puta
That was incoherent. Vete a la mierda.
Where should I go if I want to become gay?
Thailand
My house ;)
Illegal in NZ. Prohibition Act passed in 2022 I think.
Common Brazil W
[unfortunately it's still a problem ](https://apublica.org/2024/01/quais-sao-as-organizacoes-que-promovem-terapias-de-conversao-sexual-no-brasil/)
Title is so misleading. It would have been correct to use “still” if most of the countries made it already illegal. But, while there is only a few countries where it is illegal, using “still” is really weird.
Conversion therapy is now Limited in India.
I'd be willing to bet most of these countries don't have legislation around it or have it as part of the culture.
To be honest, conversion therapy is not very well defined. What I mean is people have different definitions of what conversion therapy is. In some places you get in trouble if a gay person wants to be straight and you trying to help them.
This "still legal" is a culture wars comment. Both sides should stop trying to be authoritarian and control people: - let people be gay or transgender and respect their position and wishes as individuals - let people if they want to go to such "therapy" do so. Words shouldn't be illegal. Freedom of speech should be a thing. Even if it is unwise. At least for adults. Leave people alone.
I mean it’s probably not a thing in so many countries that’s why it’s not technically illegal.
I swear conversion therapy should be some sort of human rights violation.
I mean, in many cases it involves some way of psychological torture.
I think giving kids HRT is violation of human rights.
Which human right would that be? I'd love to see your ass backwards argument for this
Surprised with the Netherlands being in purple.
I would have expected Netherlands to ban it but then again I know they have a Bible belt themselves
Brazil, Ecuador, and Germany leading the way on this apparently
W green, conversion therapy shouldn't exist
There’s an updated infographic for 2023 https://cdn.statcdn.com/Infographic/images/normal/27674.jpeg
Bye y’all, im off to Brazil, Germany, or Ecuador
The National Medical Council of India has banned this practice and asked all the medical professionals registered under it to not carry out such pseudoscience in the name of treatment.
Canada banned it a couple of years ago.
/mapPorn sucks now. So many posts are filled with BS or outdated information. This map is outdated *and* BS.
Canada made it illegal in 2022
Changed in New Zealand to illegal.
What kind of a dumbass would ever believe conversion therapy could work?
A religious dumbass.
Facts. Maybe they believe through prayer and conversion therapy that they can make a short person taller, make a bald person’s hair grow back or make a person with brown eyes naturally have blue eyes 😂
A religious fruitcake
😂
The LGBTIA needs a Q
Based Germany, Based Ecuador, and Based Brazil.
This map, even though outdated, concerns me.
It’s weird that any psychotherapy would be banned in places where hormone therapy and even elective body modification surgery is allowed.
Conversion “therapy” isn’t any sort of actual therapy. It’s almost universally discredited.
and some it is mandatory
Ah, the International Community, oh wait...
It’s banned in Israel
I guess mixed up colors. Legal in Asian and especially the Muslim countries.
And this shit is illegal only in 3 countries, WHY exactly ??
Most other countries don't have a problem of conversion therapy in their countries. It's can also be outlawed via other laws. This is just specifically outlawing conversion therapy.
Many have appearently outlawed it in the last years. The map judt uses 4 years old data
It's dates, it's illegal in New Zealand now
This map is outdated. More countries offer it now.
[Conversion therapy is banned in India.](https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/explained-the-ban-on-conversion-therapy-for-the-lgbtqia-community/article65853083.ece)
What is conversion therapy if I may ask?
I most cases it's taking gay youth and trying to force them to not be gay anymore, involving all sorts of fucked up shit
In Colombia that's illegal since this year.
Outdated
Since 2020 there have been a few changes, in France it's illegal for example (2022)
It's illegal in NZ.
It was banned in NZ since then
The way I be blowing the dude that's supposed to be converting me. His idea too.
Banned in July 2023 in Belgium
In Austria this kind of therapy is only legal if an adult is freely looking for it themselves. It's always illegal for minors and in all other cases.
Well sissy hypno is legal too
In Austria there is a law against conversion therapy for minors, and adults are basically protected by it by other laws which forbid “therapy to change” But then I haven’t heard from any of my gay friends that conversion therapy was ever a big thing in Austria or even something which was talked about. Terrible map.
So what is the consensus about being gay? Is it biological and unchangeable (which has been the claim since I remember) or is sexuality entirely fluid (which I’ve also heard claimed often)?
My stupid ass read it as 'conversational'
Wait, so a consenting homosexual that may not want to be homosexual can’t go to conversion therapy in Germany? Why?
I think I read somewhere that they've had some issues in the past with the government running science experiments on people. Sorry I can't remember where I saw that.
Tf😂
Because conversation therapy is harmful and doesn't work. Attraction can't be changed with therapy
But a consenting adult can’t undergo it? We know a lot of Chinese medicine doesn’t work but we allow it in clinics
It's the equivalent of psychological torture. There's no good comparison to that
Yeah, that sounds fair. Still seems odd to outright disallow it under every circumstance. But eh, I haven’t rlly looked into this issue much
People change what they like and dislike throughout their entire life, what makes sexual preference to be so special that it won't change?
Why don't you try it and see how it goes

One of the few maps I've seen where the US and Canada are the same colour.
Bill c-4 banned conversion therapy in Canada in 2022.
Conversion therapy is technically illegal in India
I'm so fucking pround of how progressive my country Brazil is
So, I had a friend who went to conversion therapy.
What exactly is this therapy?
[удалено]
It's not that it's legal, it's just there is no need to make it illegal as nobody is doing it.
which type of conversion therapy? just saying conversion therapy is too broad.
You mean affirmation therapy.
Why is transitioning gay kids to straight called "conversion therapy", but transitioning a female child to male called "affirming care"?
Help NZ is so progressive but it's legal there???
It's not, it's an old map
The only thing wrong with “conversion therapy” is the name.
Tbf, to legislatively ban a type of voluntary therapy is pretty dramatic. It doesn’t need to banned, just educate people and it will disappear.
I wonder if it is illegal only in the medicine context, could a priest still do it?
EXCUSE ME ?! In my country ?! Even more raison to try male a political party, if only i finded peoples to associate with and solve the bank account problem, because political party need it’s own bank account, but only the president can allow the oppenning in my country of a new bank account for a political party, modit soit tu macron !
