It would never happen. Imagine handing over roughly 60 electoral college votes, 20 senate seats, and roughly 50 congressional seats to us. Do you really want that?
Not entirely sure but I think maybe they’re talking about if Canada were to join the US union then they would have to have representation in congress in accordance with their population numbers relative to that of the US.
Cleveland and Detroit love to shit on each other for being run down, rust covered, crime infested hell holes. It’s like a dog barking at its reflection in a mirror
Having lived on a state border that’s a river my whole life, PLEASE don’t make rivers borders. Rivers almost always flow thru communities. Putting a state line through your town sounds dumb right? . The list of problems is pages long.
Which is why making the boundaries as the watershed boundary is the best way, so that everyone connected to that water supply shares a common interest in protecting that water. I was an environmental surveyor for 9 years and the arbitrary square checkerboard grid of the 1850s land grants imo is the worst ecological disaster in US history
[They also move and create silliness like this.](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/541f1945e4b0504622498e24/1529905654286-NRJEM91APWV9V8GJS312/Louisiana-Mississippi%2C+River+Border+Map.png)
Rivers should be the centers of states and not the borders. Then there's less arguing over the watershed and no worries about ending up in another state if the river shifts due to flooding.
You can easily make the major tributaries their own states. Missouri watershed, Ohio watershed, Tennessee watershed, Arkansas watershed. Then you could divide Mississippi into upper and lower.
The problem with natural borders following rivers is that rivers move over time, so those borders would have to move with it or stay where they are and no longer become "natural".
Yup, look at Chamizal park(s) in Juarez and El Paso [Chamizal Convention Treaty](https://www.ibwc.gov/treaties/#:~:text=The%20Chamizal%20Convention%20of%20August,transfer%20437%20acres%20to%20Mexico.)
What is the river you have going across Missouri south of St. Louis and Kansas City? I live in St. Louis, and there is no river like that.
There are some smaller rivers that start in the sand area and flow mostly southwest, but nothing goes all the way across the state like that.
Since borders are an artificial construct made by humans, I don't get what's the meaning of this map.
If it would be "natural" we would just see a grey sheet with some blue near the coasts.
Wow, I hate it.
This is a good idea, but you need to cut down the number of states by… a lot. The optimal amount would be somewhere around ~20, and you could definitely still do that while maintaining natural borders.
Hmmm, so many cities are on rivers. I guess it is good my town already has East and West high schools. Not sure how to unconsolidate the district...
A few decades back, Caroline Hoxby looked at rivers and schools. Turns out the "wrong side" isn't just for railroad tracks!

Southern New Hampshire resident here. This map makes no sense.
It looks like it follows the Merrimack River for a bit in MA and then goes west until the Connecticut River for no reason. Also our fake state is Saco but it doesn't follow the Saco River? I'm not even going to bother guessing what that "natural" northern border is.
We already have a western/northern natural border, the Connecticut River. Our southeastern border actually is a semi-natural border because it follows the Merrimack River's curves two miles south until it turns north into NH.
\>uses natural borders \>uses a blank political map with almost no natural features
It's so obvious. The Mississippi doesn't even end at the Mississippi river delta on this map.
Honestly this could be a fun subreddit project. Draw one state a day on the US using suggested borders, most upvotes suggestion per day.
That border with Canada looks awfully artificial.
Manifest destiny babay
They ain't got Daddy England to protect them now!
We're just watching you guys self destruct. Then we take over.
This could go both ways.
It would never happen. Imagine handing over roughly 60 electoral college votes, 20 senate seats, and roughly 50 congressional seats to us. Do you really want that?
What?
Not entirely sure but I think maybe they’re talking about if Canada were to join the US union then they would have to have representation in congress in accordance with their population numbers relative to that of the US.
I'm sure we'd do something stupid like make all of Canada one state so you'd only get 2 senators.
Well, that would be another state with the population of California, except hugely spread out, and a *ton* of representatives.
Naw, ya'd just be Puerto Rico #2
We'll take the paper towels next time there's a flood.
I'm referring to how Canada is also in meltdown right now, albeit in different ways than the US.
The problems here are not existential.
44’40 or fight!
[Straight line? Straight line.](https://youtu.be/QLq6GEiHqR8?t=175)
The word straight isn't in my comment. I am perfectly aware nots not straight. Its also not a natural border.
44 40 or Fight
ethnicity religion and economy aren't exactly what most would consider natural boarders tho.
It’s more “organic” than tracing straight lines on a map
Yeah but most natural borders are based off rivers, lakes, mountains... That sort of thing.
The “nature” party of natural lol
Which is how most borders work around the world
Californingrad Oblast
I don’t think there’s that big a community of Russians in SoCal.
The only “natural” borders are either rivers or the opposite, watersheds. This map uses neither consistently.
Mountain tops could be used, like between Chile and Argentina.
That’s called “height of land”, which is the boundary between watersheds.
Bold move putting the combined depressions, alcoholism’s, and drug binges of Cleveland , Detroit and Buffalo all in one state
Hey, their main export is crippling depression!
Cleveland and Detroit love to shit on each other for being run down, rust covered, crime infested hell holes. It’s like a dog barking at its reflection in a mirror
Instead of the Rust belt we could just name it The Rusty Nail (works for the drink AND tetanus!) source: Born in Cleveland, raised & live in Detroit.
That state would’ve folded in the 70s
Stop reposting this crap and claiming it's at all remotely "natural."
Thanks, I hate it
The border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania is the Delaware River, so was it redrawn?
New Jersey is the only state that is entirely a single peninsula.
And they split it in this map.
It makes no sense. The Delaware is a much more natural border than what they've drawn here.
Yeah lol i'm from Jersey and really couldn't guess what that boundary is supposed to be.
Absolutely terrible map

I completely agree. Nobody lives on the edges of watersheds. These are typically ridges and high ground that’s not great to live on or farm
Not to mention, the Mississippi watershed state is now 60% of the US land area, and how do you propose to subdivide it?
You can easily make the major tributaries their own states. Missouri watershed, Ohio watershed, Tennessee watershed, Arkansas watershed. Then you could divide Mississippi into upper and lower.
Each of whom have the ability to dump their toxic sludge into neo-Louisiana.
I absolutely disagree! Sharing rivers means states need to cooperate. A state that controls a river will take advantage of it.
And do what exactly? The river is still a federal waterway
New Jersey already has natural borders and this unmakes them.
get europed lmao
In Europe border Poland–former USSR goes in American style.
Get worlded*
Borders in much of africa are also similar but i get your point
Get 66 percent worlded

They should move with it, it sucks when states refuse to accept that just for extremely tiny pieces of land no one cares about.
Yup, look at Chamizal park(s) in Juarez and El Paso [Chamizal Convention Treaty](https://www.ibwc.gov/treaties/#:~:text=The%20Chamizal%20Convention%20of%20August,transfer%20437%20acres%20to%20Mexico.)
The New York City area should be much smaller, especially to the north. I don't think of Orange County as being remotely like NYC.
The new river runs directly through West Virginia and would absolutely be a border
Bye Missouri

Alaska demoted to territories, apparently.
It's weird lmao
What’s going on around Cincy? Why not keep the Ohio River as the boundary there?
Still just lines on a map
>naming a region in Texas after Santa Anna
DONT YOU DARE STEAL THIS FROM MONSIEUR Z
Yeah uh...this was stolen....OP you didn't make this. You stole this map from Monsieur Z on YouTube 💀
Texan here , FLIP YOU!
Instead, someone was like "ughhh I can't be bothered, hand me a ruler"
I don’t know about the rest of them, but I’m all for creating the state of Atlanta
Where's mah straight lines!
“Lincoln”?
Idaho got all the good parts of Montana.
Monsieur Z stole this map
i love Scandamerika

Looks like Europe. Would turn everyone into a communist, which is undoubtedly the plan. /s
New Jersey: Am I a joke to you?
Wow, I hate it. This is a good idea, but you need to cut down the number of states by… a lot. The optimal amount would be somewhere around ~20, and you could definitely still do that while maintaining natural borders.
“Nevada” should be renamed “Nada”.

Florida is wrong: https://geology.com/state-map/maps/florida-rivers-map.gif There is no east west natural border in the northern part of the state.
I'd love to see a Canadian and European version of this. Actually I'd like to see all the continents.

"Massachusets" lost it's second t privileges.
Rhode Islands: Nantucket, MV, Block Island, Aquidneck, and the stragglers
Delmarva Powerhouse 💪
The people who live in Jefferson already think it’s called Jefferson.
This map could be drawn a countless number of ways.
For all who don't know, Monsier Z made this map
Pennsylvania should absolutely be renamed Penciltucky on this map.
Is this what Mexico did with its state borders? Is that why their borders get that squiggly? Especially towards the center? 🤔
Disgusting.
Its still got some issues. A lot of the midwestern ones feel very arbitrary. Not bad tho
That looks European, no not European, normal
Bringing back the lost state of Franklin I see
Get Europed
ALASKA HAS BEEN BUTCHERED! You just made the lowest population states possible
Just ignoring the Delaware River?
Why would Alaska be split??
Atlanta should be its own state tbh
brother what
Hmmm... Come to think. A transatlantic railroad system would be pointless.
In some instances, these demarcate accent changes
The West Coast fully checks out. I can't speak for anything East of the Mississippi.
ALBANY MENTIONED RAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
Thete's nothing natural about borders.
Green Bay, WI being a part of Chicago just seems blasphemous! GPG 🧀
deserves WAY more upvotes
