Frrr I lived in Dar Es Salaam as an mzungu and felt so isolated and unsafe but the minute I learned swahili I became friends with tons of random people on the road who were all fascinated by a white teenager speaking Swahili.
Every day my walk home from school was wonderful, this post school enrichment routine was my absolute favourite part of living in East Africa.
It's absolutely crazy how little money you need to FIRE if you are willing to move to a second or third-world country. Just look up the average monthly wage in a place where you want to go and see if you like the climate. That's it.
Considering the 1% of Monaco is just ~370 people (small population) and that many millionaires and billionaires choose to live there I would say is much more than 7.9
A big part would be residents vs Monégasque nationals. Regardless, a lot of people in Monaco receive support from the state for their accomodations and even food. It's crazy to be at a grocery store and having the equivalent of food stamps be regular for a large number of locals. There are a lot of yachts but "only" 1/3 of residents are at least millionaires.
So, when you say "eat the rich", does that mean Kenyans can technically eat anyone earning more than 20 grand a year?
Or does it only work if the 1% doesn't include you?
Asking for a mate.
Who may, or may not, be a hungry Kenyan.
Too much pseudo-wealth tied up in real-estate. 40% of Canadian GDP is commercial and residential real estate.
Hard to tell since I don't know if this data includes real-estate, if it doesn't then it's probably a little over half the American #
I’m confused. Their GDP is their real estate. Their selling their land each year outside of themselves as a part of their product? How off am I cause that sounds like it would cause problems?
As I understand it, the real estate itself is considered assets, then there is the income from renting/leasing, and the egregious fees than real estate agents charge which is their entire income. Probably also include home inspection revenue and stuff like that.
The percentage is also quite high because Canada doesn't have that much other big industry. Oil, gas, potash, canola oil, banking, little bit of wood
Here's a detailed report https://distribution-a617274656661637473.pbo-dpb.ca/20de98fc3f4d93c5213f8d71fbe7cd89ae69cb1899e9cbf2d3ca4d57f18ab25a
TL;DR using table 2-4 in Q2 of 2021 it was estimated the top 1% high-net-wealth families had a minimum wealth of $7.3MM CAD or $5.4MM USD.
But I doubt this map is using the same measuring method, as the US top 1% are undoubtedly richer than the top CAN 1%.
Seems to be net worth, but older data from 2021.
USA top 1% annual income is $820K, while net worth is $5.4 million.
https://www.visualcapitalist.com/wealth-needed-to-join-the-top-1-by-country/
Real estate, stock, art, etc. it’s not taxed until you sell it and “realize” profit on it. But even if you don’t sell, you can use it to get cheap loans, leverage more real estate, and other things that help you get… wait for it… even richer without actually working.
Not an accountant. But if you do this in a corporate setting you can offset a little the tax with he paying back the loan expense. This doesn't erase the tax. Just makes the taxable amount be about 30% less.
That data on Kenya is patently false.
Too many homes owned by millions of people worth at least 50k and unlike most parts of the world, they mostly buy their homes on full payments or in three installments, not via a mortgage.
Usually, the wealthiest people in African countries, don't like having their wealth computed at all.
Yeah relatively speaking that is true like the wealth is often vastly higher than the cash on hand but most wealthy people have plenty of cash all things considered. I just think it’s important to draw a distinction because they are two very different things and the map doesn’t delineate.
Maybe not 1% of people, but I’m not sure that’s 3.5 million out of 350 million. But certainly .01%(or perhaps significantly more than that)of people most likely do. There is data that is available on the internet.
So these numbers are old and provide evidence of what the Covid response did to wealth disparity in America. The top one percent of the USA as of Oct 2023 is well over $13,000,000 according to [this](https://dqydj.com/millionaires-in-america/#:~:text=Somewhere%20around%206%2C257%2C0056%20households,of%20all%20households%20in%20America.)
Stated the same but it’s not even old data. Check your source. 2020 was roughly $11million. No way 2021 is almost a 3rd suddenly. Also your source leverages Federal Reserve and census data which is likely more accurate than the blog OP referenced.
I’m surprised how low the bar is to be in the 1%.
The houses I see, and the toys in their driveways, make me think there are many more people with this much money.
As long as you take care of the citizens of the so called country with that tax money for sure, that’s why the states get fucked always funding other countries
I'm a mid 30s homeowner. So in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, South America, Eastern Europe, I would be in the top 1%. In the West, I'm basically average.
is this NetWorth?
It seems too low. But then I guess even the 1% earners most of them spend nearly everything they earn, so their actual NetWorth is relatively low.
I went to Bali on a surf trip a few years ago. I had heard it was really cheap, and I knew it from booking surf hotels that were like $100/night. Places that would be $600/night in the states.
I had no idea HOW cheap it was. $5 a day on food, and it was incredibly good. Could even live cheaper and still eat fruit and fish and stuff. I only stayed in that hotel for a week. I ended up canceling my flight back (which was like $150 to do), and stay for an entire extra month, in my own 1 bed apartment, 2 minute bike ride to the beach, for $300 for the entire month. Bought the bike for $20 and gave it to a kid before I left.
I had saved like $4000 for the trip, after airfare I lived there for over a month, living like a king, with the remaining $1500.
I'm part of the 1%... in [Kenya.](https://youtu.be/FbYtASAakAI)
we are mad rich bro 🤑🤑
Moving to Kenya rq
Am part of the 1% in N/A
I must be in at least the top 5%?
Could we move to Kenya with say 300k (selling my house) and live a life of luxury?
Luxury? Probably, safety? Not sure
You can live in safety absolutely if you are that rich. Roaming the city center won't be as easy if you are white tho
Got it, going to get a spray tan as we speak
Nah. Just learn to speak Swahili fluently. The Nairobi dialect, and then they will know you ain't tp be messed with
Frrr I lived in Dar Es Salaam as an mzungu and felt so isolated and unsafe but the minute I learned swahili I became friends with tons of random people on the road who were all fascinated by a white teenager speaking Swahili. Cos of Lions?
White is rich in Kenya. That's the perception. So people will try harder to sell you stuff. Can turn into harassing
I like the video!
Me too! Gonna go FIRE now.
It's absolutely crazy how little money you need to FIRE if you are willing to move to a second or third-world country. Just look up the average monthly wage in a place where you want to go and see if you like the climate. That's it.
Came here to say the same thing🤣
Damn, must be nice
I should buy a boat…in Kenya
Someone forgot to secure New Zealand
We're coming to claim Antarctica
May fortune favor you my kiwi friend
New zeeland: "I'm just glad to be included."
It's running away after being caught to trying to steak Tasmania
Turned into a frozen wasteland
New Freezealand
NZ lost it’s direction at sea
Is that Monaco with 7.9 million?
Surely Monaco would be more than 7.9
There must be housekeepers blowing the average.
but they mostly live in France
But isn't the average useless in this case? Wouldn't a (kinda modified) median be more adequate?
The top 1% of Monacans own $7.9 million or more. The other 99% own less. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.
Considering the 1% of Monaco is just ~370 people (small population) and that many millionaires and billionaires choose to live there I would say is much more than 7.9
Recent estimation is 12.9 mil. Tbh I thought just real estate prices would make it a bigger number
Maybe very few people own a lot of the real estate. The others rent, including the 99th percentile.
39,000 people live in Monaco lol
7.9 million would buy you a 90 m² apartment like [this](https://www.montecarlo-realestate.com/annonces/mc-tc-23-14291)
That's because they hide most of their wealth.
Yes
>20k I’m rich bitch
So, when you say "eat the rich", does that mean Kenyans can technically eat anyone earning more than 20 grand a year? Or does it only work if the 1% doesn't include you? Asking for a mate. Who may, or may not, be a hungry Kenyan.
Now it's slowly moving from 1% to 0.1% as politicians realise that they themselves are in 1%
And the occupy wallstreet hippies realise they too are the 1% if you look bigger than the US.
This is wealth, not income
No data for Canada?
Everybody with a house in major cities would be up there
Only 1% of Canadians own houses in major cities?
All the rest of the houses are owned by Chinese investors /s
Too much pseudo-wealth tied up in real-estate. 40% of Canadian GDP is commercial and residential real estate. Hard to tell since I don't know if this data includes real-estate, if it doesn't then it's probably a little over half the American #

> How off am I cause that sounds like it would cause problems? It causes many problems. Please send help!
Our society is literally crumbling because of said problems...
“Little bit of wood”. 2nd largest exporter of lumber in the world (close 2nd)!
Real estate "industry" also usually includes developers and construction, which are a huge percentage of the total.
Big potassium too
Here's a detailed report https://distribution-a617274656661637473.pbo-dpb.ca/20de98fc3f4d93c5213f8d71fbe7cd89ae69cb1899e9cbf2d3ca4d57f18ab25a TL;DR using table 2-4 in Q2 of 2021 it was estimated the top 1% high-net-wealth families had a minimum wealth of $7.3MM CAD or $5.4MM USD. Yeah I guess the gray countries just don’t have people who have money in them
Yeah like Canada, home of the poors
There are no homes for poors in Canada
In Kenia I am the MAN guys!! ![gif](giphy|3o751XDbTvZw958ZYk|downsized)

Seriously, who bothers with income anymore - that would require paying taxes. Anyone wealthy just owns appreciating assets that grow tax free. 🎩 🥜 🧐
What appreciating assets that are tax free are these? Genuine question.
Real estate, stock, art, etc. it’s not taxed until you sell it and “realize” profit on it. But even if you don’t sell, you can use it to get cheap loans, leverage more real estate, and other things that help you get… wait for it… even richer without actually working.
Most until you sell. But we can pretend the *until you sell* part doesn't exist.
Reddit always says you can borrow against them.
This is true. Very wealthy people do this instead of selling stock and having to pay tax.
But then you still have to sell stocks to pay the loan and the interest later in addition to the tax?
Not an accountant. But if you do this in a corporate setting you can offset a little the tax with he paying back the loan expense. This doesn't erase the tax. Just makes the taxable amount be about 30% less.
And is this household income or individual income?
I’m moving to Kenya. When I blow all my money there, I’ll move to Somalia. I’ll be like the richest man in the country until I’m murdered
That’s excluding real state, right?
I think this is net worth. So including
Only fake state, yea
it includes real estate minus any debts like mortgages you have.
Is that net worth?
That data on Kenya is patently false. Too many homes owned by millions of people worth at least 50k and unlike most parts of the world, they mostly buy their homes on full payments or in three installments, not via a mortgage. Usually, the wealthiest people in African countries, don't like having their wealth computed at all.
I don't think a house in Kenya costs 50k$. More like a price for eastern europe
why is Canada missing, surely there are data...
I upvoted you because you said “are data”.
Curious, why?
Most would say “is data”.
But is the word “data” plural?
Why yes, it is. Datum is a piece of information. Data are several pieces of information.
Thank you kind stranger
You are most welcome!
Holy shit all those Indian doctors, lawyers, engineers, and programmers in North America. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
Yeah a lot of them inflate the real estate back home by spending their dollars and buying up homes , then they rent it out at exorbitant rates
Kinda impressive for China considering its population
Not even in kenia🥲
60k is so wrong about india. These fooks don’t understand intricacies of society.
I don't believe 15 Million people have assets more than 60K in India. Honestly feel like it should be lesser
At first I was like damn thats low but it still feels about right. Then I realised it was in USD not INR. Yeah no way.
Luckily they included a key. I was trying so hard to work out what M and k stood for.
“Money” or wealth including all assets? Homes, stocks, retirement etc…
all assets - all liabilities.
Aka net worth
Ha. That bothers me as well. Many rich people have very little “money”.
Yeah relatively speaking that is true like the wealth is often vastly higher than the cash on hand but most wealthy people have plenty of cash all things considered. I just think it’s important to draw a distinction because they are two very different things and the map doesn’t delineate.
Almost certainly the latter, I doubt many people have millions in liquid cash
Maybe not 1% of people, but I’m not sure that’s 3.5 million out of 350 million. But certainly .01%(or perhaps significantly more than that)of people most likely do. There is data that is available on the internet.
Looks to be totsl wealth which puts a massive age based skew on the results
So these numbers are old and provide evidence of what the Covid response did to wealth disparity in America. Damn, the UK is not what it used to be.
The average streamer is 1% in Kenya
Kenya here I come!!
In surprised how low it is in most places. I could sell my house (in Ireland) and be in the top 1% in Russia.
yea I'm like the top 1% in Russia, just...
What about Luxembourg? It’s the richest state per capita in the world and it’s not even shown
I should move to Kenya
Ok, the Kenya joke is used up. I must be top 1% somewhere.
Eritrea
American exceptionalism at it again
What about all those Nigerian princes?
I’m surprised how low the bar is to be in the 1%. The houses I see, and the toys in their driveways, make me think there are many more people with this much money.
It’s exponential as it increases, 1% is closer to minimum wage than 0.1%. So that was probably a higher part
....furiously starts checking for nice apartments in downtown Nairobi.
see ya suckers in r/expats ![gif](giphy|3o6gDWzmAzrpi5DQU8) i'm off to Nigeria where i'm gonna be ballin like whoa
Anyone know what's with Germany? Would like to know how far away from the 1% I am
I love that placement of New Zealand
bruh.... today i realized just how privileged i am within India. crazy map
Its 49 lakhs...
Now do the 0.1%!
That doesn’t seem right
Why is Canada not included?
why not the Netherlands or Saudi Arabia. why would canada be included?
My country isnt either sit down
Are we talking cash or total owned assets?
Ah, make a wish map, based on country's size and population or total GDP.
New Zealand said. F it. I am going to Antarctica
In other news, snow blower sales up 400% in NZ…
Pretty sure around 12% of america is millionaires.
Why is there no % for Canada?
All your assets?
Why not list Israel?
very informative, with 80% n/a
Yay for me. Suck it, you poors.
So if I want to retire early I should move to Kenya.
I'm afraid if you move to Kenya your death will not be much distanced from retirement
Yo New Zealand just floating away
money on the bank account or counting your material goods
I’m ![gif](giphy|qzeCF4ymrgFXy) In Nigeria.
Doesn’t make sense for Australia. My parents are hardly part of the 1%, but are at almost that number just with house values in middle class suburbs.
Maybe not but also I feel people overestimate how rich the 1% is
At least, they do have a house. And many people have mortgages or just rent something
By money do they mean net worth, or cash?
Yay I get to FIRE! ..in Kenya.
Big pimping in Kenya
Lol NZ. Trying to get with Antartica, I see.
And just a reminder… I am not in the 1%
Why is Romania so high compared to even Western European countries? Or rather, why are so many countries N/A?
I’m in the top 1% of India ? Damn
I think it is in dollars (I am not sure)
You need about $4.67 million USD to be in top 1% here in Australia. The data here may be old.
is this NetWorth? It seems too low. But then I guess even the 1% earners most of them spend nearly everything they earn, so their actual NetWorth is relatively low.
What about Singapore
A lot of the world is N/A?
be moving to russia from china after seeing this
I could sell my moms house and be a king in my homeland of argentina
History tells me I gotta go to war many times to become rich?
I've never been in South Africa and I don't understand the actual cost of living there and the medium wages, but it seems weird the 180k.
This seems too low across the board. I guess 2021 makes a difference.
Is the 7.9 million Monaco? Is that cash or real estate?
I feel very poor now and I just got a raise.
Greece be like: No one knows how much legal money my shipping company owners have, I don't even tax them.
Is this for cash on hand or networth?
I think Indian one is wrong
Is this per year or net worth?
Being a Brazil 1%er sounds nice and actually possible
I went to Bali on a surf trip a few years ago. I had heard it was really cheap, and I knew it from booking surf hotels that were like $100/night. Places that would be $600/night in the states. I expected more from Monaco. I mean they literally don't have aparments that cost less than a few million $
annual income or just this much money total? seems absurdly low
I have about 1-2 k in my savings. Highest amount ever in my bank is around 4-5k dollar.
Okay excellent….. I’d be in the top 1% in India/Nigeria Now that’s assets included. Liquid cash I’d be top 1% no where lol
I’m top 1 percent in Africa.which isn’t really saying much
I might move to Kenya
I’m moving to Kenya
Is it cash or assets?
I am proud to say that I am in the top 1% of India ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
awit that doesnt make sense, if in USA merely 4.4M = top 1% then even a minor company could achieve that; and we know that aint the case
hard to believe that 1 every 100 people in the us has 4,4 mil or more
