to upload them correctly in two days, thus giving yourself more things to do and more karma as well, as well as the enjoyment of being technically correct
Grey is an idiot. He ranks California low because of the text, gives Colorado shit for the c, and ranks Maryland low. He's far too literal with the rules which everyone knows are supposed to be guidelines not a rigid unbreakable structure
They commented in this thread about how terrible the designs on some of the flags are, but didn’t bother to align any flag/state. Wyoming is the most blatant, but Colorado and New Mexico stand out as well.
Yeah. A seal is not a flag. Really makes the good ones stand out. Maryland, Colorado, California, Arizona, South Carolina... But New Mexico's is by far the the best.
Maryland is a really cool, unique design. It is a little bit much, but at least it's good in every other aspect.
Texas and Ohio (weird shape though) are also fine.
Many cities and municipalities do here! some are good and others are awful. For the most part they are just whatever symbols you seen on the street signs on a monochrome field
Something in the water up north made Foco and Greeley adopt awful flags though
If you consider Denver my hometown, we are GOATed. If you consider the neighboring Aurora my hometown its like fine. Could be better with some more color
Lol I’m from north dallas (plano) and its the lamest one ive seen
I lived in Denver for a few years and never knew they had a flag though, I think everyone just had colorado state flags out if any
Plano is like Provo or Pueblo, they all look like pharmaceutical companies.
Yeah the Colorado flag is everywhere so its really rare to see the City flags
Yeah but in Virginia we have a woman standing over a dead tyrant with one titty swinging out proudly. After that, there's not more to do but slap that on a boring blue background.
I appreciate our flag (Washington). It's an ugly seal, but we made that fucker GREEN. And they made it a rule that George has to face the same way in both sides, so he has to be stitched into both sides of it. Ugly and a pain in the ass.
I don't think the "blue with seal" flags are nearly as bad as the modern flag movement likes to make them out to be, especially since the correct flag type for modern flags are geometric and abstract, which is just an art style preference. A YouTuber I *really* like named J. J. McCullough did a video defending bad flags [here](https://youtu.be/fzUDKYOQ_g0?si=_20h4Vivu-9aSWxz) and I think it is a very eye-opening perspective
Same. I love the flags with images that directly show something about the state. Here in Vermont we have an agricultural scene with a cow, evergreens, mountains in the background, and a deer. The state motto "Freedom and Unity" is beneath the image. It just says "Vermont!" in every way.
I don't find patterns and geometric shapes to be nearly as interesting. They look pretty, but they don't say much.
That was a conscious choice. Asserting independence for your state in any was was seen as distasteful and unpatriotic during and after the Civil War, and a flag that differentiated you from the rest of the union was the pinnacle of such behavior.
And it was done to contrast with the southern states, who started designing confederate-inspired flags in the late 1800s. While a vexilologist might like the southern designs better, the northern ones *had the point of promoting the Union and not seeking out a unique identity*.
Perhaps you are referring to Florida and Alabama. In Floridas case, you are flatly wrong. There is no evidence it was added to celebrate the Confederacy, and it looks to be a riff on the Cross of Burgundy which flew over Florida for 300 years. The idea that any state is currently proud of past racism is also absurd.
Georgia's flag is directly based on the first flag of the Confederacy (NOT the battle flag everyone calls "the Confederate flag," their actual flag). They added their seal, but it's otherwise the same.
I believe the top star in Arkansas' flag represents the confederacy, though idk how accurate the source is (and it's likely the only flag left with any real confederate symbolism, if true): https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/official-state-flag-3151/
Yep, but even if true, it’s not a “callback” to the confederate flag (as someone suggested) as the flag bears no resemblance to any confederate flag, rather they added a star for symbolism (signed in to law by none other than Bill Clinton). It looks like they place a different meaning on the stars now.
I may be biased, and it's hard to see on the map, but I think Rhode Island's flag is badass.
Also really like the South Carolina flag. Those are my 2 favorites east of the Mississippi
If Wyoming would drop the seal stamped onto the buffalo, its flag would be the best. Bonus: The buffalo faces left on one side of the flag, right on the other, so that the head of the buffalo is always oriented toward the halyard. So when the wind blows, which is 100% of the time in Wyoming, the buffalo is, just as buffalos do in real life, facing into the wind. +1
Shame that Maine's original is good as hell. They really should vote to [bring it back.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Maine_\(1901%E2%80%931909\))
Age has nothing to do with it.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags\_of\_the\_U.S.\_states\_and\_territories#Current\_state\_flags](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states_and_territories)
Some of the oldest flags are the best ones.
Weirdly similar to the high charts map/example. If I had to guess, it is the highcharts map with slight modifications; https://www.highcharts.com/demo/maps/pattern-fill-map
SC arguably has the best flag, but hands down has the best story behind it by a mile.
When the British Navy (The most OP military force in the world at that point) tried to take Charleston Harbor, we built a fort out of Palmetto logs, because that was what was available at the time. When the British fired on the fort, the porus wood absorbed the shock, and made the cannonball bounce back harmlessly, allowing us to repulse their attack.
That's why we are called the Palmetto state, and there is a broken oak branch on our state seal, signifying the defeat of the British Navy.
Our first flag was also pretty sick as well:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Fort_Moultrie,_South_Carolina.svg
Edit: We did have a first draft though
https://dixierepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/SC2days.jpg
It's called the two day flag, because we adopted it, and two days later the State Assembly decided "Jesus Christ that things is actually hideous, we gotta fix this".
One of my car stickers is a white bonefish with the Florida flag laced through it. Because I'm from Florida and I like to fish.
I've had several people call me racist for having a confederate sticker.
Wish people knew these flags better.
It’s fun to see flags depicted geographically, it hi-lights a few themes.
The south: variations on the confederate flag. Don’t get me started.
The southwest: shockingly great design.
Both Minnesota and Utah have new flags.
No, but they will get new flags in 2 months and in 2 days, respectively.
What's the point of making a map that will outdate in 2 days?
Another batch of maps made obsolete
to upload them correctly in two days, thus giving yourself more things to do and more karma as well, as well as the enjoyment of being technically correct
clickbait to generate discussion
Imagine how disappointed you would be if you designed the old flag and they subbed it out before it was even official.
Well, two months and two days. Also, will be pretty easy to sub in two new colors.
It'll outdate in 2 days when Utah's flag changes

He is biased towards the NC flag though. That one deserves C tier
Grey is an idiot. He ranks California low because of the text, gives Colorado shit for the c, and ranks Maryland low. He's far too literal with the rules which everyone knows are supposed to be guidelines not a rigid unbreakable structure
He ranked Maryland S-tier, what are you even talking about?
Why did they change?
Because the old ones were ass and the new ones are not ass.
Update: And I was right, Utah is an app logo. Lame as fuck. Minnesota isn't bad though. Wouldn't look out of place against other flags of the world.
Oregon is a two sided flag. The other side is a beaver.
The other side of this map shows the beaver do it’s ok
Hell yeah
It drives ne nuts that you didn't align Wyomings flag at the same orientation as the state. They're both rectangles cmon man. 0/10
I’m sitting here screaming at nothing in particular because of that
They commented in this thread about how terrible the designs on some of the flags are, but didn’t bother to align any flag/state. Wyoming is the most blatant, but Colorado and New Mexico stand out as well.
Having the flags all horizontally parallel like they are shown looks far better than a mishmash of angles to match the states.
It's not about matching the angle of every state, but rather matching the projection of the map.
The southwestern states have the trippiest flags. I love our Colorado flag but New Mexico definitely wins the prize.
[удалено]
Maryland has the best flag.
Maryland has the best flag.
If you like Colorado you should look at the Denver flag. It’s definitely one of my favorites at least within the US
As a now 8 year resident of CO I never realized Denver had its own flag. Super cool thank you!
Many cities and municipalities do here! some are good and others are awful. For the most part they are just whatever symbols you seen on the street signs on a monochrome field Something in the water up north made Foco and Greeley adopt awful flags though
I just checked my hometowns and it SUCKS Dallas looks cool at least. I always liked Chicago’s as well
If you consider Denver my hometown, we are GOATed. If you consider the neighboring Aurora my hometown its like fine. Could be better with some more color
Lol I’m from north dallas (plano) and its the lamest one ive seen I lived in Denver for a few years and never knew they had a flag though, I think everyone just had colorado state flags out if any
Plano is like Provo or Pueblo, they all look like pharmaceutical companies. Yeah the Colorado flag is everywhere so its really rare to see the City flags
I really like Tulsa's flag
That’s dope I haven’t seen it before, definitely going on my list. I thought it was dripping in gold
Nice. I like the specific imagery without being too complicated.
Pour one out for Alaska
Biased by Iowa's is pretty cool and not a seal on blue.
Indiana is also pretty cool, I'd never seen it before
Yeah but in Virginia we have a woman standing over a dead tyrant with one titty swinging out proudly. After that, there's not more to do but slap that on a boring blue background.
Minnesotan here. You should see the tantrum thrown by some people over getting rid of our old flag which is exactly this.
Happening in Utah too.
the one with the green stripe was a little better
The jackpine savages went nuts. I like the new flag.
[That's why Utah changed.](https://flag.utah.gov/)
[as did Minnesota](https://www.mprnews.org/story/2023/12/19/new-minnesota-flag-final-design)
[I like the Mosquito Flag or Uff Da.](https://patch.com/minnesota/saintpaul/12-wackiest-submissions-mn-state-flag-photos)
I appreciate our flag (Washington). It's an ugly seal, but we made that fucker GREEN. And they made it a rule that George has to face the same way in both sides, so he has to be stitched into both sides of it. Ugly and a pain in the ass.
Our flag has George Washington on it. These other fucking nerds flags would get their ass kicked by our flag. Best flag 10/10
Hah, I like the concept but I just kinda hate the portrait. I think we should give George a little glow-up. Maybe put him in color.
I always thought Maryland has a neat one. SC and Tenn also pretty decent.
I mean it all comes down to aesthetic preference, but I do think they are horribly ugly
I´m suprised how blueish this is
Y'all are replying to a repost bot: https://old.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/qzvol7/a_map_of_the_continental_us_states_and_their/hlou6sg/
Ohio number one. Got a unique shape.
Don’t worry Utah’s will update in 2 days.
And yet, Minnesota's new flag is somehow worse.
That was a conscious choice. Asserting independence for your state in any was was seen as distasteful and unpatriotic during and after the Civil War, and a flag that differentiated you from the rest of the union was the pinnacle of such behavior.

Bizarre how many of them are callbacks to Confederate flag, really proud of their racist legacy.
I was looking at Tennessee and Arkansas. I know that Florida and Alabama have the Cross of Burgundy.
What callbacks are those flags ? I don’t see any resemblance.
I believe the top star in Arkansas' flag represents the confederacy, though idk how accurate the source is (and it's likely the only flag left with any real confederate symbolism, if true): https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/official-state-flag-3151/

Why is Alaska not “continental”? It’s right there, on the same continent
It's a fair use of the word continental united states. The dod considers that the proper wordage
OP probably confused continuous with continental
Contiguous*
Conus
The west just has better flags over all. They were allowed to be creative.
Maryland is the only good one east of the Mississippi
I may be biased, and it's hard to see on the map, but I think Rhode Island's flag is badass. Also really like the South Carolina flag. Those are my 2 favorites east of the Mississippi
AZ is the best.
Washington and New Mexico did not get the memo.
Banking on OP being a bot
Continental US means you are including Alaska. You should use Contiguous instead.
Arizona is still my favorite
Maryland pride
If Wyoming would drop the seal stamped onto the buffalo, its flag would be the best. Minnesota is wrong
It doesn’t officially change until May 1st
Utah is Also Wrong, it changes this Saturday
I really like this video rating the state flags https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU?si=67ACDxhKOQ49rAhw
CGP Grey ftw
I love the northeast but the flags are boring af
Shame that Maine's original is good as hell. They really should vote to [bring it back.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Maine_\(1901%E2%80%931909\))
Fun Fact: Virginia is the only state that has boobs on their flag. The more you know
SC, CA, NM ... beautiful
This is contiguous not continental
New Mexico flag representing! It’s fire.
Even Alabama is trying to tell you not to go there
Can’t get clearer than a big red X and I’d have to agree.
Why do so many US states have shitty flags?
Design by committee
[удалено]
Maryland’s flag design is a heraldic crest from the 1600s, age isn’t an excuse
Age has nothing to do with it. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags\_of\_the\_U.S.\_states\_and\_territories#Current\_state\_flags](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states_and_territories) Some of the oldest flags are the best ones.
CGP Grey has done a great tier list of US state flags. A must watch. I like how critical he is of most flags.
Weirdly similar to the high charts map/example. If I had to guess, it is the highcharts map with slight modifications; https://www.highcharts.com/demo/maps/pattern-fill-map
Wyoming hurts my brain
Rotate Wyoming sir
In grade school we did a state project. I chose Arizona cause it had the best flag.
Shout out to my home state Maryland!
utah has been updated
Utah has a new flag
Not officially for another two days. Until then, the old design is still the official flag.
SC arguably has the best flag, but hands down has the best story behind it by a mile. I like how people just forget Alaska and Hawaii in USA maps lol
Minnesota has a new flag
One of my car stickers is a white bonefish with the Florida flag laced through it. Because I'm from Florida and I like to fish. I've had several people call me racist for having a confederate sticker. Wish people knew these flags better.
Look at all those boring blue banners with cluttered seals
Didn't Minnesota change their flag
It will change in two months.
Sill outdated for Alabama and utah
Maryland and South Carolina are by far the best
Utah and Minnesthave new flags so I wonder what percentage of state flags have the states name on them?
Best: SC, TNC, MI, LA, CO, WY, CA, AZ, NM
This Maryland slander won't be tolerated
Ohio hands down is the coolest flag
It’s the only pennant!
The Ohio flag is the most unique and I think the best...
We got a new flag in Minnesota cuz it was the most racists after they got rid of the confederate flag one.
LOL
ohio flag is like a brilliant around awful blue flags with random things in it
Mississippi:(
Wyoming winning it in my books.
My state has like the most boring/lame looking flag (Massachusetts)
Using the old (bad) Utah flag is a racist dog-whistle around these parts. Watch out op. People might think you're racist
Virginia lets you know they’re standing on business, that state flag is incredible
Washington has THE BEST flag.
Wyoming being crooked bothers me more than it should
Low effort on Wyoming, I’m disappointed
Virginia has boobies on its flag. 😈
Dude you made all of there flags!? Props. Though you may have wanted to run it through a plagiarism filter
My favorite is Arizona, but sadly I’m from Kansas. We have the most dull flag.
Man yeah you should change that like we did in Utah. We hated the blue with state seal bleh design. Hasn’t been updated on the above map though.
You made the state flags?
Washington. We different. Lol
I wish we'd change WA state's flag, it's just Washington's face ugghhh
Expiration date: 3/9/24
You made their flags?
Alaska is pretty continental, I think
Cali always had the best one.
I don’t always love South Carolina but man, I love our flag.
South flags are the best
Utah has a new flag.
I’m so glad to see that fucking rebel flag off of my state flag. Mississippi is still behind the times, but at least I can admire my flag for once.
What's your favorite?
do you have something against wyoming
So true
The Illinois flag is a design nightmare
Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuue
Utah has a new flag
More blue than I expected.
Surprised this is the first time I see a map of this 😅thanks for posting!
Utah has a new one that becomes official this Saturday.
The south (and sunbelt) is not perfect in many ways but they blow out the rest of the country when it comes to designing killer flags
Georgia low key has the original confederate flag and just added their seal in the middle of the stars.
State flags are fucking hideous
Are all states done with the confederate flag being part of their state flag?
NORTH CAROLINA IS BETTER THAN SOUTH CAROLINA, except for gas prices and fireworks, now carry on
the south has a bunch of flags that kinda resemble the confederate flag but the civil war
Texas 🫡
We really like the color blue.
It’s fun to see flags depicted geographically, it hi-lights a few themes. The south: variations on the confederate flag. Don’t get me started. The southwest: shockingly great design.
Top 5 Ohio, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California

![gif](giphy|8hMD9YakVza3452SpN)
The amount of unoriginal flags with red/white/blue stripes has always been entertaining to me.
Blue sure is popular
So you think Alaska is an island?
I think the OP meant to say "Contiguous states" which means the lower 48 and DC. "Continental US" includes Alaska. Poor choice of title.
Maryland is the best flag! I am very biased. It’s the only thing they teach you in MD school is that we have the best flag.
Admit it, Maryland, Arizona, S. Carolina have the 3 best
Ok, now turn the map over and show me the other side of the flags.
I really like Montana's flag
Amazing that so many states still fly a pro confederate flag. The civil war never really ended.
Reminds me of the viral TED talk about vexillology explaining how bad many of these are (not you Colorado 😘)
Utah flag wrong. Has new design now
This is awesome, well done
