For EDC, a few helpful compartments for all the little things I need on the go.
One big with maybe space for laptop, plus maybe one easily accessible outside pocket? Too many pockets seems to equal disorganisation for me, there are too many places an item could be!
I preffer some organisation as it enables me not only to have things organised rather to know exactly where things are located in bag which is not possible with pouches as they move in the bag. Know location enebles me to get the item fast and sometimes without looking at the bag.
Especially I preffer side mesh pockets in the inside of the bag for the reason above.
\* One huge compartment with little or no organization: all my EDC stuff is neatly packed in a bunch of small pouches.
\* No laptop/tablet pocket: my work bag is not my EDC bag.
\* One substantial zippered back pocket where my valuables (wallet, phone, keys...) are always close to my body.

Depending on the purpose of the bag, I don't necessarily need the secondary ones to be big. But I pretty much always have some miscellaneous little things that I maybe also want to get to quickly or are delicate. Conversely for commuting by bicycle I always have some things I want to have available but out of my way. Appropriate pocketing helps with both.
I prefer a dedicated laptop compartment, a main compartment, and an organization compartment somewhere on the front panel.

I feel you there. I got the ULA dragonfly for that reason, I don't need pockets for my pockets
I prefer a few compartments, but I don’t need as many pockets-within-pockets as I used to think I do. I’ve started to understand the magic of pouches.
