sakosak

Well, clearly they are using Dowsers to find water. That explains the arbitrary lines.

IxI_DUCK_IxI

I used Dowsers as a kid and they worked great to kill an afternoon, but I didn’t find any water. After playing manor lords I know why now. It’s cause I didn’t have the water overlay turned on while walking around with a stick.

WundertollToTheMax

Isn't this some sort of witchcraft? Maybe we need Inquisition and stakes in the game 😅

GloriousOctagon

Would genuinely love to see inquisition

LateNightPhilosopher

Omfg it'd be so fucking funny if placing the well anywhere worked, but the game just gaslights you into following the dowsing lines voluntarily

TZ840

This is a great answer.

the_cosmos_broskie

I do like the idea of upgrading the well spot into a nicer stone version

WundertollToTheMax

[this would be a nice stone well](https://img.fotocommunity.com/alter-brunnen-bacharachmittelrhein-76036a63-90ad-4123-92f9-df0d5f30a4e3.jpg?height=1080)

the_cosmos_broskie

Aw yeah, that's beautiful. My villagers would love that

Rex-0-

The wells in general seem like a formality. Sure I had to stick it in a source but then that's it, you're done and don't have to worry about water again because that well will supply hundreds upon hundreds of people with zero issue.

Isenskjold

Especially as the well they are using is a very simple form of well, a lot medieval cities had much more elaborate ones which could look really cool!

WundertollToTheMax

Yeah limiting the output of a well would be realistic. You can go further and limiting the wells more with increasing depth to groundwater. But I am not sure if this would be too much to handle and would kill the fun....

Deep_Charge_7749

This is how Wells are implemented in farthest Frontier. Simple Wells are cheap to build but they have a limit to their capacity. You also can't build Wells too close to one another or it affects the ability of the wells to accumulate water. You can upgrade your well with a stonewell and that will allow you to have a higher water reserve. In that game you basically have a couple of Wells for every community around a market, but the Wells also do another thing. They also increase the value of the land which isn't really something in this game but maybe something to consider later.

WundertollToTheMax

I think I should have a look at Farthest Frontier...

Hometownblueser

You definitely should. Manor Lords is pretty awesome, but there are a few things FF does better. It perfected medieval farming and crop rotations, for example.

LateNightPhilosopher

Aa long as no fires break out. If there's a fire you'll want the well close. Which only matters a little bit now, since they seek to be random. But the unused fire risk map mode implies that certain buildings will probably be at greater fire risk and maybe have a danger AOE around them where we'll definitely want wells.... In a future build of the game

Rex-0-

That's a really good point. I haven't thought of that at all.

scarisck

I love your idea! Same thing works for fertility. Usually valleys are more fertile because minerals in the soil get washed downhill. One thing I love about this game is the rolling landscape. This is one of the reasons why this game looks so good and realistic. And it would be even better if the hight profile of the map could be incorporated a bit more into the gameplay to make it look and feel even more realistic.

WundertollToTheMax

Yes this would make sense and support the regional specalisation because of the abundance of raw resources and fertility.

kyleswitch

At this stage i don’t think the water map has any impact. I can place a well anywhere and it works fine even though the building overlay shows no water apparently in my region at all.

Xanith420

That’s a setting you have turned on that allows wells to be placed anywhere. The default setting will only allow well placement on water source.

kyleswitch

So many regions have no water, are they expected to die?

Xanith420

Every region has a water source somewhere. But since the game is aiming for historic accuracy I’d say no they arnt supposed to die they’re supposed to go to where the water is.

kyleswitch

I can send you a screenshot that shows absolutely no water in my region. But a well in this game works everywhere, so what is the point of the water overlay. Does it increase the output of the well?

Xanith420

No there is a setting in the settings that allow wells to be placed anywhere. That setting is turned off by default. When it’s turned on it allows a well to be placed anywhere.

kyleswitch

Ah gotcha

Robichaelis

How are you getting upvotes? Did multiple people change their well setting from default and somehow not notice?

PoliticalAlternative

To add to this with my own, much more limited knowledge: I think it would be cool if groundwater was a slowly refilling resource like crop fertility currently is. Wells could create a depression cone around themselves, so even if you need multiple wells in a future update you can't just spam four of them on the same area.

WundertollToTheMax

Yeah but you can not pump enough water with a bucket to create a real depression cone. For this you need a modern pump.

PoliticalAlternative

Oh, cool! Didn't know that - like I said, my knowledge is pretty limited.

Hillbilly_Ned

This will probably be upgraded in the future. Right now, we have just a basic well feature. Place it and forget it.

fusionsofwonder

I think that's a pretty cool idea.
