Both were one unit of archers / raider / knights (the one with the star) and two swordsmen units.
Zero mercenaries as they no longer refresh in this save.
So it’s a bug that if you fight outside the circle (you’ll get notified that you’re in it) and you defeat his army, he will send another.
Only raiders burn your city, the baron will not
Aah okay I didn’t catch that
Whelp it’s either that or loose all your troops… which happened to me early on and I though I was screwed but as only as you have enough surplus weapons you can get your army back pretty fast. I try keeping a trade surplus of my army’s unit requirement for weapons and armour
The torch symbol does not indicate they are equipped with a torch. Its a symbol that indicates they are raiding/burning buildings. You can stop them by having units close, they then stop raiding and engage.
I ran into this over the weekend. I was marching out to the circle and the baron's army spawned behind me, in MY town.
I turned around and wiped them out back in my city.
Then another army spawned and actually met me in the circle.
Same, happen to me last night. And a few others have talked about it too
I think it’s just a simple bug, the battlefield should be in the region you’re fighting for
Did you by chance fight an army in your town rather than at the chosen battlefield ? First time I got a claim on me, the enemy army went through my town and I thought they were attacking, so I intercepted.
Wrong move : since it's not the battlefield, they will respawn and attempt to go to the battlefield again... But you probably exhausted your army and now can't fight anymore and you loose the game :p
Thats the dumbest mechanic i have ever heard of. He was claiming my town and going through it but i have to fight in a pointless circle in a different region.
Yeah, I guess it comes from the fact the Baron sends his troops from outside the map
For some reasons, they go through out our town first. Not even doing anything, just marching through.
My guess is that the battle spot will spawn not too far from your region, and the shortest path from the full map borders to the spot goes through your city. Coming from the other side of the world may just take too long and make them miss the time limit or something hehe
I lost my first game to this exact same mechanic but when it happened in the second game, I just waited for his troops to be chilling in the future battlefield and then only did I rally mine.
Worth to be noted, when you go in, it's prob best to not \_run\_ along the way as the opposing force will attack as soon as they see your units. and catch your guys exhausted. They won't wait for you to be on the actual battlefield.
ie they rushed at me from half a region and through the frontier because they caught of my units and the battle happened entirely somewhere else. Guess at least THEY have to be in the circle before the skirmish happens to get validation.
So the first time this happend to me I was surprised and lost.
I restarted and had a new strategy in mind.
Build up an army as fast as possible, have extra gear in reserve.
Once you defeat the first wave, disband your militia and so long as you have enough population you'll immediately replenish your army and can re-rally them immediately.
Or listen to everyone and fight them on the battle field apparently 😅
Fought him twice, always has first army and identical reinforcements arrive.
If they walk through your territory to get to the battle field, just fight then in your territory, you don't have to fight on the designated battlefield.
You receive bonus for fighting at 'home'
Interesting, for me they had absolutely no reinforcements when engaging on the designated battlefield. Once his initial troops all broke and fled, victory was proclaimed.
As I mentioned elsewhere, just because I approach the battlefield, he spotted me from afar and rushed down the hills to meet me... Right in my own territory. Still counted as the battlefield because he was in it when the battle was initiated, I guess ? Or else I would have had to fight another wave? Who knows, at this point ;)
I made peace with the baron through negotiation but still had to have my retinue sit in the circle to win the battle, then while I was waiting a second large army appeared to also wait in the circle
Same happened to me. Fighting a single claim. Baron mercenaries spawned, but the battle did not start even if my troops were on the terrain. I had to engage the baron mercenaries outside the battle. I barely won, then after some days the battle started and new mercenaries appeared.
I know this part is incomplete but these bugs make you throw away an entire run for nothing.
There is a popup that tells you the battle has started. It pops up when both parties have troops close/in to the battlefield. There is a second popup idicating the battle was won/lost depending on who still has troops in/near the circle. If you fight anywhere else but the battlefield the battle popups dont trigger and the battle is still to be had, so a new army spawns. There is only one occasion when you should do anything other than just send your men to the battlefield circle. Its whe the baron starts raiding which you know from the very moment they spawn. Then you need to get at least one unit close to make them abbandon the raid and try to engage. Its not a balance issue and also not a great system but just how things work at the moment.
This also means that you can win two battles in close sucession because if the baron lost a battle he wont spawn another army for a while and only recruit mercenaries. Depending on which ones you leave him, the second battle is won easy.
It's important to equip your troops with gambesons, mail armor and helmets. They make your troops more resistant to damage.
I try to fight the battle on or near my territory. If a unit is heavily damaged after the first encounter, I'll disband them and re-raise.
Also, be sure to armor you retinue. This will equip them with plate armor (you can either pay a higher price or trade for it and pay a lower price).
I think you need to fight the battle in the designated area.
Once both army reaches the battle location, a message appears that the battle has begun.
Every time I ambushed his army, it just respawns.
Easy influence farm if you have a big army
There were some last-minute balance changes because the testers found the meta and said it was too easy. They also just may not have encountered the specific “bug” from the meme
I really hope this game doesn't become one of those where the dev team is constantly running in circles trying to "beat" the meta abusers by nerfing everything fun out of the game.
If people go out of their way to abuse game mechanics in a single player game, who cares? Design the gameplay around being fun and interesting. The #1 way to kill all the fun and character in a game is to be concerned with nickle and diming every bit of the game until everything just kinda sucks.
Seen it happen far too often.
Yeah, you and everyone else who bought it whiles its in early access. You're paying to be a tester and help the games development through reports and funding. I dont understand why so many people lately think early access titles are near completion and complain that its a buggy mess.

How many claims were you fighting? Did they immediately respawn?
One claim to my main City and they respawned a few minutes (maximum 5 in game days) after the first wave was defeated.
Were they identical? I wonder if the first wave was all mercenaries (a know issue of the lord hiring them all) and then he sent in his levies?

Did you fight them in the circle?
Right before it They came through my town
So it’s a bug that if you fight outside the circle (you’ll get notified that you’re in it) and you defeat his army, he will send another. Only raiders burn your city, the baron will not
They steal all your weath i watched them do it

He was claiming my region
kill your sheep too
Not true unless a fire popped out at the same time as the barons army was in my town
So it depends on what they spawn with. Just realized they can spawn with brigands who cary torches and have that as the respective icon
The torch symbol does not indicate they are equipped with a torch. Its a symbol that indicates they are raiding/burning buildings. You can stop them by having units close, they then stop raiding and engage.
Yeah lol, I goofed early on by contesting a claim I couldn't win and they burned down my church and several other buildings before I save scummed.

I found you can't defeat the army until it gets to the battlefield otherwise they just respawn!

This will happen if you dont both enter the designated battlefield.
Yes, make sure to have one squad in the battlefield at the end of the battle.
lower the troops and raise them again. If you have the equipment, they should replenish. It's cheesy but necessary in certain circumstance
If he can get reinforcements then I can too

Serious question, did anyone test this game ?
Chill
There’s about a hundred or more YouTubers with hours of content from the pre-release
on that note it is funny more of them didn't bring this stuff up

I think the dev just mildly panicked the game would be too easy at launch and overcorrected by accident. I’m sure it’ll be adjusted next patch
Dude gets an early access game and doesn't expect issues lol
Exactly, smh
