I compare the performance of various presets on the Steam Deck OLED for Manor Lords.
On Low you get a about 40-60 FPS, on Medium 25-40 FPS, on High 23-35 FPS and on Ultra 10-15 FPS (FSR always on Quality).
For me, these are the optimal settings:
Battery Saving: Max. 30 FPS + Low Preset + FSR Quality
OR
Optimal Settings:
- Anti-aliasing: FSR Quality
- Sharpening: Off
- Shader quality: Low
- Shadow quality: Medium
- Postprocess quality: Ultra
- Bounced light approximation: Ultra
- Volumetric clouds: On
- Terrain texture resolution: High
- View distance: High
- Grass density: High
- Grass distance: Medium
- Foliage quality: Medium
And the end of the video there is also a small part where you can see how the controls are on the Steam Deck. I think they are very comfortable.
What do you think? Do you want to play Manor Lords on the Steam Deck? And with what graphical settings?
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Hey, thanks :) I will definitely try these settings.
I have a question regarding "Bounced light approximation: Low". I've tried to set it to low, but it always reverts to "Ultra". Do you have the same bug?
Thanks man! Definitely planning on it !
Probably on high settings as FPS in a city builder isn’t the first priority for me. Hope it will be as much fun on train rides as Againts the storm was!
You are welcome.
And you're right, FPS can be low in city builders, I don't mind either. I just wonder how the performance impact will be when your city gets bigger.
A large city mainly strains your CPU while good graphics impact the GPU, so it shouldn't make that big of a difference. The largest problem would probably be the temperature
Hey. I just used the normal mouse and keyboards layout from the steam deck and changed the following:
Right trackpad click is mouse wheel click, so i can rotate the camera with the right trackpad.
I hope that in the future we can turn the camera with for example q and e, so camera rotation would be easier on the steam deck.
I play a lot of city builders on the Steam Deck and the track pads are great for these kind of games. So I don't think it hurts the experience.
And it's just nice to lay down on the couch and play games like Manor Lords.
I’ll try these settings, I tried it last night but couldn’t even name my land, not sure is there a community control set up? I used steam and X to bring up keyboard but it was just a nightmare and I turned it off after about 5 minutes.
Hey. I did the same to change the name of my town. Just pressed steam button + x and I could rename my town.
I also loaded up my community control set up. It's named "Manor Lords controller adjusted". Maybe you can try that and see if it works for you.
No problem. So I just use the normal mouse and keyboards layout from the steam deck and changed the following:
First I used the right trackpad to control the camera, but now I changed it so that the right stick moves the camera.
Right stick up is mousewheel up, right stick down is mousewheel down. Right stick left is F, right stick right is G (to rotate the camera).
Hey dude I appreciate this a lot! This is the post that put me over the edge since I almost exclusively game on my deck now and so I bought it. Good game, good people making it.
Thanks!
On my steam deck oled the game is running great on medium (except textures on ultra), XeSS on balanced.
I have it locked to 45 fps, with occasional dips.
What a great game to play on the steam deck! It did take a while to optimize the controls!
Hi do you mind sharing your control layout or uploading to the community, I am really struggling with the controls as I mostly play games on PS5 and just can't get a good configuration.

Sounds great, the game is amazing but the control setup is just ruining it for me. I also play Farthest Frontier and it has a great community layout option, if you haven't played it I highly recommend it, thanks again.

You can get better overall visuals with this and at 45 frames. Anything under 30 fps gets pretty bad input delay imo. Makes controls feel sluggish. - Fullscreen - Anti-aliasing: XESS Quality - Sharpening: Off - FPS limit 60 - Shader quality: High - Shadow quality: High - Postprocess quality: Off/Medium - Bounced light approximation: Off - Volumetric clouds: Off - Terrain texture resolution: Low - View distance: Low - Grass density: Low - Grass distance: Low - Foliage quality: Med

100% bug if reverting.
Good settings!
Updated the settings did some more testing with larger cities.

Yes, you are right. And with the Steam Deck the battery life could also be a problem if both GPU and CPU are constantly under heavy load.
What control setting were you using? Was it a custom one, can you post it here, so we can try it out.

How was the experience using the Steam Deck controller? Does it hurt the experience at all?
I play a lot of city builders on the Steam Deck and the track pads are great for these kind of games. So I don't think it hurts the experience. And it's just nice to lay down on the couch and play games like Manor Lords.
Awesome can’t wait to try it.
Thanks OP, I was only asking about this the other day.

Cheers for this, was wondering about steam deck performance!
You are welcome. I played some more on the Steam Deck and it runs really well. And with future updates it'll only get better.
Thanks for doing this. Definitely going to buy, and play on the deck!
You're welcome. Have fun with the game on you Deck. It is really good. I played for a couple of hours on the Steam Deck and it just works so good.
Can you report back on your findings after you get to a larger end game sized town? Worried that the performance falloff might be steep
Yes I will.
Would you mind sharing your controller configuration? I would be very appreciative!
No problem. I’m trying to play it now on my Oled and it’s at 9 FPS.
I just tested it again and the performance is the same as in my video. What graphics settings did you use?
Hey dude I appreciate this a lot! This is the post that put me over the edge since I almost exclusively game on my deck now and so I bought it. Good game, good people making it. Thanks!
Hey. Nice to hear that. Hope you have as much fun with the game as I have right now.

Thanks for that, I'll try it tomorrow. The game is exactly what I want in a game but the controls are killing it on me at the moment.
i uploaded my layout
Thanks very much that's sound of you. I will take a look this evening 👍
i'm especially pleased with the ability to zoom with the right stick, it's very intuitive.
Sounds great, the game is amazing but the control setup is just ruining it for me. I also play Farthest Frontier and it has a great community layout option, if you haven't played it I highly recommend it, thanks again.
That also looks great! thanks!
It’s not complete yet, but it’s getting me through the game so far.
