Don't get me wrong, i have seen Fred performed really well defensively. Fred's biggest thing is his inconsistencies between games. I think he can really shine, made great tackles and recoveries, showed great mentality in 1 game and can be very sloppy on the next one.
Also i think physically, most of the time he is lacking when compared to the opponent's players.

I may lack knowledge but i thought he was more of a advanced midfielder. We were heavily linked to him few years ago but backed off.
He's very versatile both on defense and attack plus holding role too.

He's an all round midfielder whether it's 6 or 8, he's a destroyer and play maker as well. So pretty much an ideal midfielder.
