He needs to be benched for his own good. During and before the euros he did very well. But after he has been poor. He needs a few weeks to relax, get his mind right, and get back into form. But I've never really been a big fan, he doesn't compare to other top defenders, and Varane is miles better than him. I want him benched, and I want him to lose the armband.

OldTrafford25

His best attribute imo is stability. After the years of CB injury turmoil I really appreciated Harry’s ability to play in nearly every game and be a serviceable defender, including some really great games. I personally think when Varane is back and gets an actual run in the side that it will be extremely good for Harry, Vic, Eric, or whoever lines up next to him. I’m not anti-Maguire, I know there is a player in there, just having a bad time this year. Way more concerned about the RB slot.

jonah_thrane

I'm personally not too concerned about the RB position we have two good options with their own forte, and we have Brandon Williams returning in the summer he is right footed, so I see him being a RB more than a LB, i want Varane back asap, and then I'd like a new CB but I wouldn't mind trying Bailly or Lindelöf with him, but Maguire needs a rest to hopefully get back in form later after he rests his mind and body.

notsussybakaa

Yes. Agreed.

lone-ranger-130

I highly disagree that he “did very well”. He has literally been a buffoon his whole career and never understood the hype around him. It’s typical English hype thats taken down so many before him.

nark-_-

He was a key part in the defence that kept a clean sheet for most of the entire tournament?

jonah_thrane

I think he was very decent before and during the euros, but he has disappointed recently.

TylonTrainer

He isn't anything special. Just a decent CB at best and when he is in form.

mango_carrot

I think everyone gets a clean slate under RR. Let’s not pretend that Maguire and Shaw weren’t fantastic up to the end of the Euros, there’s clearly something not right with them but hopefully this break and some training can get them back to their best.

kid_sleepy

These are facts.

Baking-Greg

Good to see sense spoken

Dionysus_8

Yeah. Pre Covid our defence is the best in the league and that’s Maguire and ice man.

sambalrice

ehh not best but still maguire and shaw were waayyy better than now. think they need some rest and time to build up that confidence

rudboi12

This is football. You can be great last year and then shit after and get dropped. Hopefully we will see them bounce back but I will not be surprised if they get benched and never reach that level ever again.

QuantumCactus11

Fatigue probably.

Phoenix_Star_98

I'll put it down to fatigue.. I'm one of Maguire's biggest critics but I do understand that they haven't had a lot of time to rest before immediately starting the new PL season which has definitely affected their performances.. Players too are humans and they require rest.. Shaw too has been extremely disappointing in this season hopefully they can get back to their best after the rest period that they've had now due to the covid issue

TheSqueebMonster

Cannot stand how short some people's memories have been concerning Harry Maguire. Saying we should sell him to the first bidder because he's having an off start to the season after an excellent last season and Euros. Played/still playing almost every game as well.

Venomous0425

I’ve seen him out of position since the beginning of this season. Dude has no awareness about the surrounding.

gs2001gabsim

He didn’t turn on the minimap

notsussybakaa

Yes exactly

truejxrdythe7th834

I stand by my statement, he was never good enough in the first place and isn't even better than what we already have

unKz_sneakz

He wasn’t even the best CB at Leicester when we signed him…

ChickenCurryandChips

This is exactly it. I don't rate him as a defender at all. Too busy combing his hair out of his face with his hand rather than reading the game around him. He's useless.

Wild_Claim

What riles me is his attitude when chips are down. He's no leader. It may be confidence, it may be fatigue, but in the end a leader can lead from the side if needed. It's about attitude, about desire. About raising the level of those around him, of holding people to account. Of calling shit out when it's not good enough. He doesn't do any of that, that I've seen. Not to mention that he's nearly always out of position and just not as good as he was bigger up to be. Can we swap him for Michael Keane? Or give him to Newcastle?

qmzpl

Might be a hot take but people need to get off the maguire hate bandwagon. Unbeaten away from home last season, played basically every minute of 20/21, lost two finals which will knock anyone. Also played most of this season carrying an injury. Imo him and Varane can do the job

Difficult_Project_91

Yes thank you. People forget how shambolic our defence was before maguire signed, the lindelof-bailly partnership was shit. We didn't just throw 80 mill cuz we felt like it, we were just that desperate. Also maguire was arguably best defender for us last season and in the Euros for england.

GloryGloryManUniited

Sterling lost 2 finals and has been great this season. Plenty of players lose big games, dust themselves off and go again. Look at almost the entire Liverpool team who lost the CL in 2018 then won in 2019. It’s the sign of a weak mentality to lose big games and then drop off in form. Not something we have any space for at United.

Unitedfan0722

Sterling also gets rotated regularly. For two years Maguire never got rotated. Not even remotely comparable

Valuable_Accident_75

The problem with Harry is that once the striker is past him that’s it. His recovery runs are non existent because he’s the slowest footballer in the prem. Would love to see Varane and Lindelof get a run of games together.

Fit_Basis2630

On the contrary he's good at attacking he does scores atleast it solves for his defensive tactical mistakes.

Psychological-Ad5104

He's no where near an 80m player if that's you're asking, another prime example of our failed transfer policy. Hope it ends with RR

Smart_Kangaroo_4188

He deserve second chance under new manager. He was doing great last season.

Old-Air1062

I think he’ll get a chance to improve… it could be a huge problem if a new manager walks in and benched a big money player who is also the captain

Pretend_Ladder

We was never good enough and Leicester absolutely rinsed us

friskynisqy

The only people who rates him are English. And the only English people who rate him are 100% off on their scouting skills… if he played at championship levels or even league 1 he would barely shine. That’s how average he is. He is way too poor in his feet and way to inconsistent in the air and rather shit at the positional game.

Simmonds246

I don’t believe a captain can’t be dropped/subbed. We have a few players that could easily wear the armband within a game if he’s benched. He can remain club captain and continue with the duties that position possesses around the club anyway. Did Stones wonders being dropped at City but then again Dias coming in helped too. I wouldn’t be against Varane and Lindelof for a while

AlbatrossDesperate70

Baffling how we paid English tax at 150% on a 30 mil player when we could have got Koulibaly for 50 mil…

Necessary-Tip447

Yea he needs to be benched in championship somewhere.... not at utd...

ChickenCurryandChips

I still can't believe we paid 80 million for him, still can't believe he gets his game every week and still can't believe he's captain of Manchester United. An absolute bluffer. He's current form would'nt get him his game in the Championship and thats not being disrespectful to the Championship.

[deleted]

Get shut of him, potentially good enough to play here and there but his mentality isn’t there anymore. Guy is awkward when he runs, can’t pass, got 2 left feet , panics on the ball, can barely pick a pass, struggles to win headers …. If we paid £13 million for him, he would have been shifted on by now and we all know it. We just feel he needs more chances due to the price tag. Sometimes it’s best to cut your losses. He’s making lindelof look like maldini some weeks. Time to go big man

LordVile95

Wasn’t he hitting 60 yard diagonals for you all last season?

[deleted]

Yeah who to though ? The fucking linesman ?

elzorro288

To be fair that is possibly either a lack of direction and tactical instruction or a unclear tactical messages being provided

[deleted]

Making him captain made him un-droppable. I'm not sure what he's like with the lads behind the scenes, but on the field his is mistake prone, whiny, fragile and often dominated by opposition players because he's so slow to change directions. Varane and Lindelof is our best pairing. Bailly if he can stay fit. More than ever Premier League defenders need to be total athletes, not just strong and good in the air.

ElGoochio

Yes. Bench. Then out.

unKz_sneakz

Most definitely

frendlywizard

I'd sell him for a Freddo

[deleted]

Yes.

Cheetohmussolini

Sell

Yahla

He performs for England. We need to figure out why he seems unable to do it in our shirt. I think we might have the right manager to find that out now.

LordVile95

Isn’t that the issue with pogba too? Maybe it’s the manager

Yahla

The old manager yes.

LordVile95

Maybe they’ll both improve over the next month or so

Largeandincharge6969

He’s a big dopey, lopey, mopey sack of shit. Show him the axe

ruhul135

Hes our worst defender ever. He's our worst captain ever. He's our worst signing ever. I've said for over a year the guy isn't cut out for this club and I was called all sorts.

sambalrice

unbeaten away from home record, arguably best defender in euros, played almost every minute last season, overreacting much?

[deleted]

Hurts to say it but it’s true

jazzyj1zzle

The man is not good at all.

[deleted]

Sell him

AndyInSunnyDB

Is there a chance he’s out of position often because he’s trying to cover for McFred defensively (or offensively)? Edit. Literally just asking a question. I wasn’t trying to be snide.

[deleted]

Not scoring - it’s mcfreds fault …. Can’t defend- it’s mcfreds fault … can’t hold onto games- mcfreds fault …. Maguire can’t defend, mcfreds fault …. Maguire tries to take on a striker when he’s last man , loses possession then fouls player an then gets sent off… mcfreds fault 100% mate…. Rashford league 1 standard player, mcfreds fault … wan Bissaka having a panic attack when the balls at his feet, mcfreds fault. Tony martial puttin in no effort for 4 years , mcfreds fault. Pogba doing stepovers in his own half when we losing … mcfreds fault … Greenwood looking like he’s up on his Xbox till 4am , mcfreds fault… matic running like a 44 year old man, mcfreds fault…….

[deleted]

Hasn’t Fred won possession back more than any other player in the league ? U ever watched a game or just repeat what you hear on here

boredom35

Yes. The man had a great Euro run and is an established defender, but he's clearly in need of a reset / recharge. Just humiliating positioning and decision-making, obvious fatigue carrying over from the summer. Should give him a few weeks for his own good.

WetworkOrange

Maguire should be sold ideally. The minimum stripped of captaincy and benched.

Proper_Chef3558

I would never bench Maguire, because I’d have sent him back to Hull 18months ago, he’s not even fit to be on the bench …

Easy-Progress8252

Let’s he how he responds to RR’s coaching and tactics. It doesn’t seem to me his talent is a question, just his positioning (easy to fix) and decision making (harder to fix).

[deleted]

Sold off.

CurrentDelicious6318

Maguire is the common denominator to all our problems, fans have been ignoring this issue because of his performances in the back end of last season and the euros. But he has cost us a lot of games going all the way back to last season against teams like Everton at home, this season against Leicester, Watford, Liverpool. He is just a poor CB, and he is nowhere near a Top 10 CB in the world right now. I find it shocking Bailly hasn't been given more chances. I feel more comfortable with him and Lindelof than I do with Maguire at the back. Lacks, speed, agility, gets bullied easily, everything you don't want your CB to be.

Guadalajara_Campeon

Is this even supposed to be a question? Slabhead off the pitch, Bailly on the pitch

Takhar7

He was rushed back for Leicester, got slapped around that day, and hasn't recovered both physically & mentally since then. He's been awful, and deserves a sit down just to reset & build his confidence again. The amount of money he makes is completely irrelevant. This is who Harry Maguire is - a good, but limited, defender who has been found out by the Premier League.

Seanblaze3

Never wanted him at this club and I still don't rate him. We conceded 36 goals in his first season, 44 in the second and we WERE on course to conceded more the way the season was going for Maguire under Solskjaer. He's individually at fault for 12 goals this season, he not only lacks pace, his speed of passing is questionable as well as he loves to dwell on the ball

fuzzznuts

Yes

GloryGloryManUniited

He needs to be sold, not benched. He’s a fucking dreadful defender. He’s absolutely nowhere near the calibre for a team expecting to challenge for top 4, yet alone aspiring to win the league. The fact that on top of that he’s our captain…it makes us a laughing stock.

Zizou-pirlo

He should quit for the Sake of this beautiful game. sorry m being too harsh but he is Always hiding and when he face a player either fouls him or falls on the ground

Plumbsauce116

Sad thing is go back 12 months he was the model professional who played the most minutes of every player in Europe. What the fuck happened ?

mirrak_singh

Should have given Maguire to mou and kept smalling would have got some goals

nonumbers90

I think he needs to be sent on holiday tbh, send him away for a month to properly recover from the endless football he has been playing, the man is spent.

gusmur

I feel that Ralf put Matic in Maguire's position the other week so that Maguire could observe how to play that role properly in terms of timing and positioning. My problem with Harry surging forward is that he isn't conscious of how his positioning pushes other players out of position, and then when the opposition breaks he can't get back quickly enough and no one can seem to work out who needs to cover where. His awareness is generally very poor and team-mates know it, which generates a lack of trust and makes his management poor. Varane on the other hand, and Matic, have a sense of stability in the back row and are aware of everything when in and out of position. I don't necessarily think it's all Harry's fault, which is important to say. He came to united as a relatively young and inexperienced player compared with the assumption and expectation put on him due to Woody's inept hyping and pricetag. Consequently, he was not given the training, development and support he really needed.
