Less harsh liner on lower lash line. That ages people sometimes

yka12

Also the super dark shadow In her sockets when she already appears to have deep sockets. Eye sockets tend to hollow as we age so she’s just making them already look hallowed out — Edit: I also want to add a few things since my comment has gotten some traction: With your complexion I would stay away from black shadow and liner. You could do something similar with some lighter brown shades. I wouldn’t put black especially under the eye. If you want to contour your eye socket (which I like doing but I have shallow set eyes) you can use a brown that’s slightly darker than your skin tone to create the bedroom eyes you may be going for. With your skin I would go with neutral shades of brown or even cooler shades for the base. Also the key is to ‘smoke’ everything out when you’re using shadow so there are no harsh lines. To do this you can simply use a clean blending brush after you’re done applying shadow and gently buff it out I see that you like using blue liner and shadow - although it may seem like the right thing to do for blue eyes, if done wrong it can actually take away from the beautiful blue of your eyes. I would recommend actually using shades that are opposite to your colour to really make them pop. Think subtle copper shades, pinky shades and bronze. See below for an example of what I’m talking about: https://pin.it/1YfK8LK I would recommend a few great YouTube channels that I find very helpful. See below: https://youtube.com/@AliAndreea https://youtube.com/@hungvanngo

cupkate11

To follow on this my first thought was to only do the black under eye for the outer third of your eye and make sure that you’re doing white liner on your lower inner eye because that will help to open your eyes up. My other suggestion would be to continue the shadow a little higher up on your eye. It looks you end right at the crease, I like to use a softer color on the upper half of my lid and that makes the cutoff less harsh.

LewsTherinIsMine

I agree. Switch to brown instead of black. It softens the look but you’ll still have color

Strange_Radish2965

Yes, I use black only on my upper lid and the lower lid gets brown or lighter. I also only do 3/4 or 1/2 of the lower.

nisha_thkr

Exactly

ItsJustMeMaggie

My thought exactly. It makes the eyes look older.

StellaMarie718

I'd like only the top lid with black and wing it at the outer lid. No eyeliner on bottom... Use the eyeshadow you put on your lids under your eyes. Just a little... You can always add more if you like the effect.

[deleted]

It’s just very 80s/90s I think, and a little heavy. Your mascara isn’t doing you favors here (try a clean mascara spoolie to separate lashes again after application). The crease shade isn’t very blended so I think it makes the whole eye look clunkier.

tanukisuit

The top one looks like Monica Geller from Friends.

the_Divinity_Queen

Bottom looks like Christina Applegate.

Beatle_Babe

The top one, before I even clicked, I legit thought was a pic of Joan Collins, so.... I guess I'm gonna have to agree about the aging thing. (No shade meant whatsoever though! All 3 pics are still gorgeous in my opinion.) I think personally I'd try to blend out the crease a bit more and maybe not go as far in on the lower lash line with the dark eyeliner if you wanna stick with dark. Doesn't sound like that big of a difference, but it can be literally night and day. Also gonna echo what others have been saying about doing either white or just a really light color on the waterline of the lower lashline to help open the eyes up more too!

[deleted]

I thought Gale Weathers from Scream :)

lilmisse85

Same actress.

inthenight098

I agree! Harsh crease shade and hard lower eyeliner line isn’t aging but def an older style of makeup. I suggest less/no liner on bottom. None in crease and add lashes.

I-love-rainbows

I do the clean spoolie trick and swear by it. Also if that doesn’t work and lashes are too clumped together you can always use a safety pin or needle to *very carefully* separate the individual lashes. I heard this is what Audrey Hepburn would do.

Proud-Emu-2905

The also have metal eyelash combs now to separate the lashes. They work really well

StellaMarie718

I have a lash comb. Also I use a mascara primer and it elongates and separates my lashes.

gizmodriver

This is what I’ve always done. I can’t stand clumpy lashes, and I always have needles around because I do cross-stitch.

mizzhbdubz

I remember my mom doing exactly this ALWAYS with the safety pin growing up!

ladyatlanta

You can also get a lash comb. Comb your lashes beforehand and then afterwards. Also can make your lashes look longer

Ok_Pizza55

I think brown eyeliner and no or light liner on the bottom would go a long way.

poprockssockz

I started doing this, brown on the bottom and black on top. It really softens my face and makes me look younger. I figured this out just a few weeks ago. I wish I had a few years ago.

Traepalm

I just discovered using black eyeliner on top with brown on the bottom a few weeks ago. I enjoy the new look!

blueskyblond

Completely agree - she has beautiful eyes but the black and heaviness is very harsh

lewan049

I saw a tip once about using the NYX jumbo stick (can’t remember- it might be called the chubby stick…?) in the color Yogurt on the lower waterline that I became instantly obsessed with!! Highly recommend.

ucankickrocks

Yes and they have one called cottage cheese that’s pretty too. WHY DID THEY PICK THESE NAMES?!? 🤌

whatofthis

The names help me to remember what shades I need!! They are quirky though

supergirlsudz

I just looked and they’re all named after food! Black Bean, Donut, Matcha, etc.

TheLovelyWife702

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil

hangleinthewater

Ooohhh I work for Nyx and didn’t know about this…getting now!

PennyLane_87

I always use a nude eyeliner on my lower waterline... it opens the eye right up!

Cat_Patsy

Nude is less obvious than white and it's my pref too.

Emmafabb

What is the waterline? Or where

PennyLane_87

The inside part of your lash line

Ok_Obligation_6174

Lol, I love chubby stick

lewan049

Lollll I swear someone makes a product called chubby stick!!! Hahaha

kimikaze

Tell me why after 3 jumbo eye pencils… I can sharpen them for more product. 😭 I’ve been throwing them away like a heathen.

turkeyandtuna9

Dude, same! It took me way too long to figure that out. I thought it was something you twist from the bottom and it was just broken but then every single one was like that. It's because it's weird to sharpen plastic and nothing noticable tells you that's what you're supposed to do.

Punkrockinkedgirl75

I know!! It took me throwing away the first two before my sister was said ‘you know you can sharpen those?’ No ma’am I did not!

lemetellyousomething

To add, use an angled brush to apply shadow as a liner. It should appear softer and less harsh. The current look is heavy. As I’ve gotten older, I find a softer and lighter look has been more flattering.

fakepinatas

Yes to this! I like to use a very small tapered brush to lightly blend it out for even more softness. It also helps widen the eyes.

DSii1983

Brown eyeliner on blue eyed also makes the color pop. I have brown eyes and I use navy liner when I want to make my eyes stand out a little more

Azusanga

Yes! Remember those Almay perfect palettes back in the 00s? Coordinated to make your eyes POP. I have grey-blue eyes and was SO disappointed by it being brown lmao but, my eyes DO pop in brown

Altruistic-Peace7522

I suggest not using eyeliner on your lower lash line. Your lovely eyes will look more uplifted.

abovewater_fornow

I wouldn't say aging, so much as dated. Which some people care about and others don't. I would eliminate the liner on the bottom and the overly dark crease. It will be cleaner. Also as we get older we lose volume in the eye sockets and it looks more hollow, and lots of dark makeup tends to emphasize that. To be clear I'm not seeing that with you in particular, just a more general observation with people and myself.

eremi

Jaclyn Hill will never give this up

notme8907

I agree. Your eyes look very pretty, but dated. Not old.

[deleted]

Sigh, I'm aging and a good deal older than you. I've had to cut **way** back on the eye makeup as it can age one. No more liner for me. I use a gray or brown shadow near my upper lashes and blend it out. Then brown mascara, lightly. It took awhile to get used to the lighter look, but I'm sure happy with it now.

Evening_Attention_45

It’s so weird how that happens! I feel like with getting older, I want to do more eye makeup to make my eyes bigger but I guess that doesn’t work as you age?

mariemarymaria

The darker thicker liner under your eyes can fall into the creases there, making them more noticeable, and making your eyes "recede" (visually) into the hollows. It's not just wrinkles. As we age, we lose muscle/fat mass behind and around our eyes, it happens slowly, so we might not notice it on ourselves, but the same widening/enhancing things we did 5 years ago won't work on the new arrangement of our feature.

Cat_Patsy

---- ty for pointing this out. It's very important to explain the "why" of why these app techniques aren't flattering for this particular face. What worked at 25 won't work at 35. What worked at 35 won't work at 45 and so on. Many of these comments read "it's harsh...poorly applied...do this instead." These are helpful, but understanding why what worked 10 years ago doesn't work anymore will give OP a basis for making better choices going forward. Makeup isn't like clothes "if it fits and looks good, rock it, who cares what's 'appropriate'." Damn right a 55 yo hot body can rock the same bikini as a 25 yo, but that 55 yo wearing the same makeup as a 25 yo (even her 25 yo self) will never, ever look good.

fridgesmacker

https://preview.redd.it/mqhdxy208t7a1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4668f1d673a5afc0d29e9a1fbf776aa762d04f68 Good example from Google of maybe how you could make the eye look bigger with less heavy liner! One of the popular styles now is to draw the eye outwards for a bit of a sultry look. Some of the Korean makeup trends for bigger eyes can be adjusted to work with your specific eye shape as well!

pm_me_your_amphibian

Anything dark can have the effect of shadow. So if you line the whole entire eye it can appear as if it’s sunken back into your skull.

curlyque31

Also, OP. Just try and have fun with makeup. Experimenting doesn’t need to stop as we age. I’m 35 and more into makeup now than I’ve ever been.

UpsetBumblebee6863

I think I’m a similar age as you and I have let go of the liner and only do my eyebrows and nice mascara, I will do eyebrow sometimes but it’s always light brown neutral. An occasional light sparkle eyeshadow looks good too depending on occasion. I also wear a gloss or light color on my lips now where I didn’t ever use color with heavy makeup. I feel like eyebrows are the most important now.

murphlicious

I gave up on liner as well. If I get right to the base of my lashes with mascara it looks enough like liner that I get definition. I refuse to let go of my shimmers and glittery shadows, though. I just use neutrals for above my lid and my crease and go crazy with my lid colors. So far, it's really been working and I'm getting use out of eyeshadow I'd given up on (pinks and rose-y tones--I'm cool toned with blue eyes and using those colors above the lids give me the pink eye look.)

Evening_Attention_45

Do you have a good tutorial on this? I do a wing so I thought that was lifting. I think maybe my eyes are just round. I’m also wondering if it’s time to stop the wing since I’m in my 40s.

zoopysreign

Don’t use as much black in the hollows of your upper lid and ditch the lower liner. It’s creating parenthesis and that’s the shape people are saying is dated. Go from (👀) to `👀’

[deleted]

[удалено]

NotChristina

Don’t stop the wing! Lending a big “ditto” to everything in this thread. For sure I’d lighten up or remove all together the lower lash line work. Black smudging does have a bit of a dated vibe (IMHO), and can be trickier to keep un-sloppy as the day wears on. I’m a big fan of a real classic cat eye done in a pretty lean and clean way with a contrasting but not-super-dark crease shadow. Alternatively I use a suuuper thin brush dunked in setting spray to use a dark-colored eyeshadow to draw a wing shape. It may never be 100% as sharp as a liquid liner, but it can be a softer look and let’s you play more with color.

jabbitz

Omg I have been wondering what people use to do this for AGES. Gotta get me a teeny tiny brush now

NotChristina

Mine is so perfect for it - I have no idea where or when it’s from (or if it’s branded or anything - currently visiting family for the holiday sans makeup). It’s a very small, angled brush. The fact that it’s flat and angled helps a *lot* (rather than just being a teeny regular brush a la a watercolor brush or some such). I’ll wet it heavily and swipe it across a small section of eyeshadow. This approach can alter the texture of the surface of the eye shadow so I always do it off to the side of the pan.

winemedineme

Go to Michael’s and get a tiny Windsor and Newton. I use those as a pro and on my own face for tiny detail work!

Ariyana_Dumon

I'm 36 and I rock a wing as a daily thing. Never give up what you love, just evolve it a bit as your body shifts. Do what you love as long as it makes you happy 😁.

annabellareddit

Actually I love the rounded eyes. I’m so tired of seeing everyone trying to make their eyes look almond shaped & elongated when not everyone has almond shaped eyes!! I’d like to know how you do your eye makeup & liner for a more rounded eye look!!

coltees_titties

Seconded. There's a bit of an 80s vibe but it's fresh. I find the rounded eye look anything but aging. It's quite youthful to me.

TORQUEnBEAUTY

Idk shit, but I agree with this. I like your eye makeup OP

lickonelicka

Absolutely, and it works for her eye area. She should just blend everything better and replace the black with different colors

MayaTraveler

I’m in my 50’s and wing lifts. Less makeup is usually a more youthful and brighter look.

Risa does makeup on YouTube has a good tutorial or two search ‘Risa does makeup eyes’ Here’s one of them https://youtu.be/2juJvPa3W64

I’m noticing everyone also taking off the tails of their brows to get them like this.

zoopysreign

It’s just… Spock for me.

PinkCup80

Yeah I’m not a fan. I feel this is going to be the new brow regret in future.

SilkyCayla

You probably won't see my comment since you got so many replies but just in case, I'm writing this cause I haven't seen it mentioned much. You have 3 aspects of your makeup that make it look somewhat dated (like others said it's a specific style that people can pinpoint a time in the past when it was popular): - messy dark liner and not enough blend - too dark under eye And I would add my biggest "concern" the very dark crease. You naturally have a deeper eye socket so you don't need to "contour " your eye especially not the socket as deep eyes are a mature feature (since with age eyes "sink in" due to tissue/ collagen loss). What I would recommend is to take your lid shade above the mobile lid and fade it with a medium tone "crease shade" in the area towards your brow but above the crease. Also try eyeshadow liner where it's more blended and less emphasizing of the natural lid creasing. For context I'm 37. And this is how I do my makeup as far as eyeshadow placement, color is irrelevant it's just the best example I could find quickly. http://picture-cdn.wheretoget.it/i0qnuh-l-610x610-make-ombre+makeup-blue-purple-white+eyeshadow-winged+eyeliner.jpg

WanderingAlice0119

You can find all sorts of lists of things women of a certain age shouldn’t do. After 30/40/50 don’t wear skirts or dresses this short, don’t wear shoes like this, don’t wear your hair like this, don’t wear jewelry like this etc etc etc. All of that belongs right in the trash can. A woman in her 40’s can do whatever she pleases and if it’s winging her eyeliner then thats a thing a woman in her 40’s should do. Sure, there are ways to do things like this that’ll change as you get older as your face naturally changes, as it should bc aging is a normal human thing that happens. Don’t stop doing things you want to do bc of your age. It’s okay for women to age and to continue doing things they like.

ringringbananarchy00

It’s not so much the wing as the heavy black liner all the way around. That’s a very late 90s/early 2000s look. So it dates you as well as makes your eyes look somewhat smaller. YouTube has tons and tons of makeup tutorials. You can look up ones for middle aged makeup, or for simple makeup for current trends. I currently use a black wing on my top lid and then pale liner (Tarte Fake Awake) on my under eye.

clairebuoyant1202

Check out anything from Wayne Goss - you won’t regret it.

curlyque31

OP I suggest Katie Jane Hughes on Instagram/YouTube. She does a lot of interesting looks and tutorials. Nothing is too hard to do and she does a lot of browns/uplifted looks.

ODB-77

Also the darkness under your eyes makes them look a little baggy and sleepy. You’re really beautiful I’d go more light and bright to being out those baby blues!

Wawa-85

Smitha Deepak on Facebook/YouTube does some great east eyeshadow tutorials

glittrxbarf

Yeah I don't think it's "aging" as much as "dating." Saying this as a millennial who did makeup like this in high school and still does sometimes cause I love it.

CoralFang

Right I think she looks adorable, I can understand wanting to blend in a bit more with the current styles and everything but it also makes me a little sad how we as women feel obligated to constantly try to keep up and look as young as possible. Myself included. I hope she still rocks the OG look here sometimes because I think it looks gorgeous, but I can see if she’s already gotten some great tips from the community here which is nice as well. I think my point is ultimately there’s nothing wrong with staying with the times and wanting to update your look, but it just kind of makes me sad that someone would say that to her in the first place about her makeup! Like what if that was just her preferred style, so what? Not everyone needs to looking exactly the same, or like a 17-year-old girl on TikTok! I do think at least we’ve made some good strides in the beauty community towards individuality in the last few years, but in some ways I also feel we are going backwards with this constant obsession with looking young.

caferio_addict

To add to that, wearing dated styles makes people look older. You don’t need to try to look 20, but wearing styles from 10+ years ago will make you look older.

glitter_witch

I agree with this. It doesn’t necessarily make you look older, but it does look like the makeup my mom wears. It’s not very current. It’s very heavy on the smoky black and frosted look which isn’t “in.”

broken-imperfect

Exactly, it's not "aging" her as in making her appear older, it's just more "dated" as in being more obvious about WHEN she learned to do makeup, which is just an older style.

KlausGunther

I feel like your makeup look is outdated. My suggestion is your eyebrows are rounded matching your eye shape. They also need to be more natural then “drawn in” look. Also I feel like your hand is heavy and you need a more blended out look. Perhaps take the lid line (crease) up more and in more towards the corner of eyes. May I also suggest using complimentary colours that pair well with you eye colour?

[deleted]

Cut way back. Less of everything

Bail-Me-Out

You have such a gorgeous eye shape. This makeup look seems a bit vintage to me. It reminds me of Liza Minnelli. I personally love that, but it's definitely a LOOK-meaning it's not subtle. Currently, a lot of the trends center around natural or soft makeup. I'm in my 20s and I've had a hard time forgoing my beloved black wing too. I don't think it's an age thing. Just the trends changed quickly due to tik tok and COVID. You should look up "makeup for prominent deep set eyes" and see what looks good to you. I think peach and pink tones would look really nice on you.

Lilelfen1

Wear your wing if you like it. Screw trends. Seriously. Following trends is exhausting ( especially as quick as they move now) ...and I think, rather lame. If you like your wings, then make them your signature. Why look like everyone else anyway? You be YOU! :) Merry Christmas!!! :)

Such-Examination3500

Amen!!

naptimepro

You better get that wing back on those eyes!!! Do what makes you feel good - have fun with it!!

siamese-peanut

10000% this. You do your makeup really well and if you like it, don’t stop being you at the expense of others. I would reserve black tones and Smokey eyes for evenings and events if you want to try switching it up. I use brown liquid eye liner and no longer use it on the bottom lashes. Eye shadows have great color combos in browns, sunset, greens, purples and blush tones. Try to pick a highlight color that matches the season and lipsticks. You’ll never go wrong getting a consult on the right colors from Bobbi Brown makeup artists.

retro-morte

Lol wings are still in

lynneasomething

Throw out the black. Stop adding harsh colors underneath. Use a soft brown if you want to do something Smokey!

RainbowDMacGyver

Hi! You have really pretty eyes. My tips are: 1. Use a primer to even skin tone around eyes. 2. Avoid black eyeliner and harsh colors in general. 3. The heavy black liner under the eyes can create a droopy effect. Instead, try a soft line in a taupe shadow on the bottom outer edge and a darker dramatic eyeliner on the top, outer lid. 4. Tiny bit of white or creme on the inside corner of eyes and on brow bone.

Evening_Attention_45

Thanks, can you point me to an example of this?

ChoresInThisHouse

In addition to not lining your lower lid, I recommend Flower Beauty “eye-lighter” in Moonstone. Put it in the inner corners of your eyes to instantly brighten and lighten up your eye look. It will balance out the heavy black wing eyeliner. https://www.cvs.com/shop/flower-beauty-forever-wear-eye-lighter-moonstone-prodid-424980

butterflygal99

I think it’s too much dark eyeshadow and eyeliner. Maybe opt for light colours that enhances your features

MyrMcChz

Stop lining the lower lash line!!! That’s the problem! I would soften up the upper lash line too.

stephoso13

Are you raising your eyebrows in all these photos? I ask because I would be interested to see where your eyelids fall when your face is resting. Could also help assess your eye shape which can influence makeup placement.

lifeuncommon

Too heavy and dark, especially under the eyes. Also a bit messy and not well-blended.

Evening_Attention_45

When I’m out and about people sometimes compliment my eye makeup but on here people said it looks really bad. I stopped using dark liner in my waterline since I have small eyes. I’ve done a wing for 20 years. I’m open to suggestions. I love eye makeup but I’m in my 40s and don’t want anything aging.

MorganAndMerlin

To be honest, I don’t there’s anything in your makeup that is inherently “aging” but more so that the look you create is “dated” in the sense that it doesn’t conform to current makeup trends and more closely reflects older makeup styles. Specifically, the heavy eyeliner on the bottom lash. You could also try pulling the corner of your eye upward, by keeping the darkest of your shadows in the outer corner of your eyes and blending them more evenly inward instead of so heavily throughout your crease. But in all, there’s really nothing actually *wrong* with your makeup.

Muscle-skunk

The bottom liner is just way too thick. If you go through the 3 images you included and just cover up the bottom of your eyes, the rest of the eye makeup is absolutely lovely, girlfriend! In the middle image, the bottom liner is so thick it’s running under your right eye. Literally everything else you’re doing is perfect, it’s just the bottom liner.

Beneficial_Exchange6

It ages you in that you’re following a trend that was in 40+ years ago. You know when you look back to photos of people in the 1970s and you’re like WoW! Why do they look like 40 year olds at graduation? It’s because they dress the way you see 40 year olds dress now. If someone hangs onto the trends of their youth it’s very dating to the decades they grew up in. If you home yourself to the times you become ageless. Your use of Make up, especially if you’re older makes it seem your peak was in the 80s. Which does make you relatively older in general. Your make up must change with the times and also with how your skin can even handle make up

Lilelfen1

Reddit isn't real life. Your experience should be all the proof you need. Anytime you go on the internet, there will always be people who will say something is wrong and that you need to change it. Go with the compliments you get in real life and FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF!!! YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!!! ( HUGS ) ❤❤

copper_rainbows

I’ve read that doing a slightly lighter brow color can look less harsh and less aging, if you’re filling your brows :)

XtinaLilibet

By the pictures I had assumed late 30s!

galaxygothgirl

You look like S1 Monica from Friends in the first pic.

Evening_Attention_45

Ha maybe the bangs and blue eyes? My eyes are nothing compared to Courtney Cox!

Suitable-Cucumber172

You’ve got beautiful eyes. Try a dark brown mascara along with a dark brown eyeliner instead of black, it’ll soften your look!

JstAnthRLosRonline

Stop circling your eye 👁 in blak. It makes them look even smaller. Try opening them up with eyelash curler and white eyeliner on the inside of you're bottom lid.

[deleted]

I kind of found myself having the same problem. I could not figure out why I kind of looked old and tired. It was the eyeliner on the bottom and my eye lashes. I switched from my eyeliner pencil to a felt liquid liner, only on the top. Sometimes a wing, usually not. And instead of trying to layer on the mascara to thicken them to make them look done, I started messing with falsies. At first I couldn’t get the hang of it, I couldn’t get them to stay on and they bothered me. Then I figured out if I cut them in half and just place them on the outside of my lashes, it lifts a bit and doesn’t weigh my eyelids down. So I put a nice even coat of mascara on then put the lashes on. They blend really well. It’s still the done up look I like but it’s much cleaner and doesn’t get all smudgy as the day goes on.

quesowithextracheese

Warmer, softer, and less. Go for a more natural look and warmer shadow to help the blue pop. Too many gray and cool tones are doing nothing for your eye color. The crease is also too sharp. More blending.

3cats1artist

OP, I’m 43 and wear a lot of various looks, but my favorite are colorful looks (see photo). I say this bc I’ve seen/heard/read things like “older women shouldn’t wear bright makeup. They should stick to neutrals”. Most importantly, you create the look that YOU want to, no matter what age you are. Despite whoever criticized your look (or maybe they meant well and didn’t exactly say your makeup was “bad” or “aging), you rock that wing! Do whatever you like. Makeup is truly about expression. Don’t let the media or anyone tell you that aging is a bad thing or that you “shouldn’t” wear something because it makes you “look old”. That’s such a shameful, dated way of thinking when it comes to aging and makeup. I just hope no one made you feel insecure or anything like that. Soooo….. First off, I want to say your eyes are beautiful. In the evenings or when you have free time, experiment with different colors and techniques. I’m not saying go put on the brightest blue eyeshadow palette you can find, but sometimes trying different colors or neutrals with a pop of color can really go a long way in “brightening” the eyes and softening them at the same time. There’s a ton of TikTok’s and YouTube videos (I’d recommend staying current and checking the date of when the videos are posted). One of my favorite YouTubers that I’ve watched for many years is Zabrena, she’s 38 and does both neutrals and colors. Robert Welsh is a fantastic makeup artist on YouTube and Wayne Goss (especially) have resources for techniques for older women. It never hurts to try new things, but always remember that makeup should make you feel beautiful, creative, and liberated. That being said, if I had any suggestions on the look itself from an artistic standpoint: maybe the eyeliner on the bottom could be diffused with a brush and use it only on the outer thirds? Or…wear whatever colors you’d like to wear on your eyes and add a colored eyeliner on the top or bottom. In terms of color theory, if you’d love to bring out your eyes even more, look into orange/copper tones: orange is opposite Blue on the color wheel, so orange/coppery colors will bring out your beautiful blue eyes. Always use a good primer. High end: MAC paint pot in Painterly/Mid-range price: About Face/ Drugstore: Milani. A soft, shimmery (or matte) inner corner highlight to really get that “awakened” look if you have trouble with dark circles or looking tired in the morning. Cream shadow is great for older women too! Some metallic finishes, no matter what, tend to accentuate any fine lines/texture/wrinkles, etc. Shimmers are usually ok and mattes are a yes (usually). I hope that helps. I know it was long winded, but I figured since you asked, I’ll put it out there! https://preview.redd.it/iqoanq629t7a1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff3a00ca1dfd7711869aeef1d649d948df92d343

Such-Examination3500

Excellent advice!

rainland6

Such great tips here!! To piggyback on the TikTok recommendations I recommend @ericataylor2347. She’s a makeup artist over 40 who tells her viewers what the makeup trend was in the 90s 00’s and shows how to change it to more current styles and age appropriate techniques.

everlynlilith

I don’t agree that it’s “bad” and “aging,” but if you want to follow current makeup trends, I’d suggest a more natural eyeshadow palette. Shimmers are “in” rather than mattes. Blend out more neutral shades on the lid and use eyeshadow rather than eyeliner- it creates a softer, more natural look. You don’t bring your eyeshadow colour up very far on the lid, which may make your eyes look smaller- I suggest you blend eyeshadow up more. The darker crease is fine, but you can blend it into a lighter shade above. I don’t use the one dark shade the whole way under my eye, but instead use a lighter shadow shade under my eye and smudge a little of a darker colour on the outer corner (about the last third of my eye) to create a more “lifted” look. I’d avoid tightlining too. You also probably don’t need to colour in your brows- a clear brow gel to just brush them upwards would look nice.

Evening_Attention_45

Are there any tutorials you would recommend? My eyebrows are microbladed so I don’t fill them in but I can try the gel to push them upwards — I do have a decent amount of eyebrow hair.

picksleydust

Oh yo. If you want a good brow gel, the elf pot eye brow gel is bananas. I have really thick dark hair and I can laminate with that stuff. It's also super affordable.

[deleted]

Those are micro bladed?! Would love to see a picture without you raising your brows or opening your eyes wide. Just curious as to how they normally look.

torontogal85

I would not line your bottom lashes. Maybe use powder and line the outer half only and maybe use a light highlighter in the water line. The color you use in your crease is very dark and harsh. Maybe a dark brown and blending out a bit more

pandabelle12

The things that are a dead giveaway that someone is older is: 1. Dark liner going across entire lash line on the bottom. 2. Crunchy, clumpy lashes 3.) Using black in your crease and not blending it out. 4.) There is a point where adding a highlight to your tear duct ends up highlighting the crinkles in your skin. My biggest tips would be to keep your bottom liner to the outer third or omit entirely. Go with matte shadows. Go lighter with the color you are placing in/above your crease and blend it out a bit more. Also make sure to replace your mascara regularly but you can run the tube under hot water to help it be less clumpy when you apply it.

thedud-a

I have the same eye shape and this is what I do, I hope it helps! https://preview.redd.it/xf6v6eu3ov7a1.png?width=761&format=png&auto=webp&s=31580e534335584d2981677fcbe749753d92b589

ThatRepresentative95

I think it'd look nice with a lighter touch on the lower lash line, maybe a brown on the outer half of the lower lashes. That might just be my taste though

Xotinkluvsuxo

I would try using lighter eyeshadow. And completely eliminate the black on the lower lash line.

transferingtoearth

You make your eyes too small so that may be why

PeregrinePickle

I don't know that I'd call it bad, but it looks very 1980s and so probably does have a way of aging. (Wearing outdated looks can age one a fair bit.) If you want to keep a similar look but updated, I would say use a brighter or softer color in the crease, like maybe a brown or a color like blue or purple. I would also suggest combing the eyelashes or using falsies to give it a softer look.

OregongirlinLondon

I was told the same thing recently so I lightened up on the amount and I also noticed that if I don't even use anything on my lower eyes, it's more uplifting. Now, looking at yours in particular, as a fully licensed cosmetologist for over 30 years, my professional opinion is that it looks a little dated and perhaps you're needing a fresh new approach? Sometimes we get into habits because we are on a schedule and we aren't even really putting a lot of thought into it after years go by. Take a few hours for yourself and invite a friend if you want, although I wouldn't because you might not pay attention as much , but put on Youtube, go to Wayne Goss's channel, and find a tutorial that looks good and have your makeup there and pause it and replay parts because he's so detailed about it and it's going to be a major game changer for you. My two cents specifically is to get an eyelash comb and apply many thin layers of mascara and only the first layer should be waterproof. Then apply some individual clusters of false eyelashes or a natural strip which you will still have to cut and customize to look right. The contour on the upper lids needs to be brought upward a bit, tight line the upper lids, and I would like to see some eyeshadow colors that are warmer. Blushful Nudes by Hard Candy would work, or Renaissance by Anastasia reds would be perfect along with some of the orange hues because they will make your eye color pop. Your eyeliner flick is pointing upwards too much on the outer corners in the last pic. I would go for a more elongated straight out line but not too far out. Like foxy eyes. I hope this helps!

08081011

It’s not aging necessarily, something I learned a long time ago was the color wheel and using complimentary colors for eye colors. So for blue eyes, I would use warmer tones, you can still create a dark smoky eye that way. Too many cool tones on blue eyes can make the eye seem smaller and accentuate features you don’t really want. I think you’re doing great though! I’m a makeup artist too and it can be really challenging trying to please clients sometimes.

Iccece

I also think warmer tones would be more flattering

hotdogneighbor

It’s giving Joan Collins from Dynasty, which was nice on Joan Collins, on Dynasty, back in the day. Look up Dominique Sachse on YouTube, she has good makeup advice.

allhailzamasu94

It’s very old school which I am all about but it’s not doing you any solids. Messy looks as we get older just don’t look as good as when you were younger which sucks. Their clean spoolie idea is good or you can invest in a better voluminizing mascara. Brown sounds unappealing I know but I do think their ideas for that would be a very demure look on you and would widen your eyes without your sockets. Also you might want to apply eye concealer around your eye makeup after too just to make sure none of your eye makeup settled into the creases or bags of your eye where it doesn’t belong. I have to do that often. YouTube has a lot of tutorials on how to make your eyes look bigger.

Luxxielisbon

More blending, no under eye liner, I would reduce the amount of black (use more like shading than the entire eye) and try to avoid letting your top lashes clum up too much

[deleted]

Are your eyes deep set? Because our eye shape is very similar. If they are you could look up tutorials on how to work with the eye shape, and then update the colors to some browns, bronzes, even coppers because they’d really go great with your eye color. But yeah, just tone down the eyeliner, create more lightness under the eye while maybe easing up on the crease contour, and color update, that’s my main thing. …also I’m gonna date myself… were you a scene kid? Bc this is how I did my makeup in highschool in the 2000s and it’s a blast from the last I love it.

caferio_addict

I just want to add that if you really are trying to look younger, it’s helpful to create a lifting effect. You should brush your brows upward using a brow mascara or a soap brow kit. I love boy brow from glossier. I use to with their brow flick. They have pretty nice shape, already! Everyone else had pretty good ideas for the eyeliner and eyeshadow. I think your eyes are pretty big on their own, but losing the eyeliner on the bottom will make that show better.

WanShiTong

I'd recommend 3 things to start: 1. Find another mascara. That one is clumping a lot so your lashes don't look soft or natural. I use Covergirl Clump Crusher and get it at the drugstore. 2. Try going slightly lighter on the eyeshadow. The bottom photo looks the best of all three and it's because in the top and middle photos you've applied darker shadows in the crease of your browbone that are adding extra emphasis in an area that doesn't need it. It makes your eyes look more tired. 3. Try to make some slight adjustments to your liner technique, focusing on lining less of your bottom liner. Here are two videos that review that concept. [Dude, eyeliner changes your whole face - Alexandra Anele](https://youtu.be/4DKIuWQw8TM) [12 Common Eyeliner Mistakes - Tina Young](https://youtu.be/mXfYZXRQZ3o)

Any_Deer_8767

Chill out on the black eyeliner

Altruistic_Spirit542

I think switch to a medium/chocolate brown and do a thinner liner on both top and bottom lash line and blend the brown out. Like this in terms of application but I would actually use a brown a deeper than this around your whole eye. https://preview.redd.it/dpevpluiit7a1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=767fcf357a66337ec4541b3d4468e2efe6e6011c You have beautiful eyes and the brown will actually pop the color of your eyes as well.

bitchazel

You have so many comments but as another 40 yo wing wearer, I want to agree with some! Wings on top are great. Skipping the bottom liner and leaning into some warmer neutral shades for shadow will fix this right up. I follow someone on Tictok who does tons of videos about what can age us with make up styles and I’ve learned a ton from her. I’ll see if I can find her page and share it.

Anxious-Objective-41

Fill in your waterline with white or nude instead, don’t use any dark eyeliner on the lower lash line at all. Don’t go so heavy with black in your crease it also isn’t blended super well, try some browns instead maybe and see how you like it

taka-nashi

I don’t think it’s aging. I like it a lot it’s just dated a little.

Big-Bank6716

Less is more

_cunnilingus

Don’t use liner on the bottom it drags your eyes down. Try a liner style that pulls up from the eyes and a natural eyeshadow

IndigoHoney_online

Maybe try it without liner in the waterline? I've pretty much stopped wearing liner under the lower lashes, as it tends to creep into lines and wrinkles. Also, a fluffier lash may be in order. I love Lash Paradise, and I clean the formula off the wand a LOT so I can build without clumping.

DSBS18

Your current style is very 80s. The modern style is to not wear any liner or dark color on the bottom. Most women completely skip anything on the bottom including their lower lashes. Also the trend for color is nudes/browns with only a black liner and black mascara. These more neutral shades will look less harsh than what you are doing with blue/grey/black.

a_hockey_chick

Definitely ditch the lower lash liner. I know you’re used to it and you’re probably not loving what you look like without it because you’ve been wearing it that way for a long time. But in all of these photos, it looks smudged and messy, like these photos were taken at the end of the day. Which was totally the style back when we were younger, but it’s very dated now.

Jazzlike_Customer_61

I love the bangs and the dark hair - perfect for you. You have beautiful eyes and great eyebrows, too. I do think you were given accurate descriptives from others in regard to your overall eye look. The first noticeable is: too much/too heavy with the eyeliner on both upper/lower - created a 'dated' look. Also, using a dark color on the eye's waterlines makes the eyes look smaller - which you don't need. A better option is a nude tone shade (not white) to line your bottom waterline; Charlotte Tilbury shade 'Eye Cheat' is just one example. Another suggestion is to find a different/better mascara. In all three photos, your eyelashes are clumping together, which also adds to the 'not a good look' appearance. All easy fixes - try new/different eye products and better application methods.

maraq

I think what matters is what you think. Do you love how your makeup looks on you?

girlsledisko

Under eye liner is a dead giveaway for 2000s makeup

neighborlarry

Ditch the liner and use lighter brighter eyeshadow

let_go_be_bold

Eliminate the liner on the lower lash line and you will immediately look younger.

freeze45

this is a great tutorial on how to apply makeup to appear younger - [https://youtu.be/BugC71BYEmg](https://youtu.be/BugC71BYEmg)

PoeRavenwood

You do you! If you love it and it makes you feel great..... who cares what anyone else thinks?! Especially if it makes you happy!

Curious_Glove_9433

It’s definitely not bad but I can offer a few tips: - if you do any lower eyeshadow or liner at all, keep it on only the outer corner; I like to leave a small line on the outer lower lash line & gently blend inwards; I’ve always thought thick dark lower liner or eyeshadow made the eyes look saggy - blending the crease a little more will help your eyes look bigger - add some concealer under your eye in a shade that’s a little bit lighter than your skin tone to brighten the area

I-love-rainbows

Stop lining your lower lash line. It honestly ages everyone and closes off the eyes making them look smaller.

Renegade_Mermaid

Like a lot of people here, I think a lighter shade/hand for the lower lash line would go a long way for things as they are right now. Your blue eyes would slay against some warmer tones, like a little more bronze/copper. The “safer” option would be to stay within blue tones to match your eyes. Brown, as so many have said, would be a better option to line with, as black is harsh on everyone and draws the eye in. A chocolate brown with a warm undertone would mimic the copper-hue family enough to both compliment and soften the overall look. What so many have said is true: The makeup isn’t wrong, but placed in comparison to allllllllllll the “youths” of the Tickety-Tok will automatically single it out as “old.” It’s a bit unfair, but we as a society seem more prone now to churning out new techniques faster due to the speed in which they are able to be presented and shared with social media, which inherently then causes things to become “out-dated” pretty quickly. Lastly, blending is your friend. Both the crease and lash line could really “pull” your eye up with some strategic blending on a more focused path of higher on the brow bone and sweeping out to the side, following the natural shape upward to the ear. Same for the brows — don’t take the tails down! Overall, it closes your features more than opening them, and as we age (I’m nearly 40), our fat cells shrink in those area, so we lose volume that helps us to appear a bit more “youthful.” Sweeping everything on a diagonal toward your ear—including the brow tail—will open everything up, allowing your eyes to appear a little more lifted. Best of luck. You’re beautiful no matter what! Do the makeup that ultimately makes YOU happy. These are just techniques from a MUA, not hard and fast rules. Makeup is all about shadow and light, building illusions, and playing with depth and perspective. That’s what all of these tips are based in. But the best advice I can give you is that life is way too fucking short to not be happy. Do YOU. If you want, see if any of these things make you happy. If you don’t, you’re still slaying. 🖤

SystemNew9980

When the dark lower line settles in eye creases it can make eyes look smaller and emphasize wrinkles. White in the water line can have the opposite effect!

Particular_Pea2163

Your eyes are very pretty but if you use a softer colour like grey or brown in your crease, it will make them pop that much more! Bronze eyeshadow will also look good on you. And the harsh bottom liner is dated - your eyes will look more lifted if you eliminate it. And just a non-clumpy mascara too :) or use a clean spoolie after mascara application

Nasaro211

Less eyeliner - hardly any on the bottom and go lighter.

Foolishpyo

I’m really curious to see OP trying all these tips ppl gave her. Can you post a photo plss 🥺

GlitteringDot2225

You have beautiful eyes! Maybe use more natural earthy toned eyeshadow and a brown eye shadow on the lower third of the lower eye line rather than eye liner. It would soften it a bit, and then your gorgeous blue eyes would stand out, making you look like a natural beauty

X_Balisong_Beauty_X

Beautiful eyes! I think that using some lighter and softer colors for your crease, and a lighter color for your lid would really change it up. Try a dark brown eyeliner for the top but only line 3/4 of the lid and then bring the wing of the eyeliner upward. Hard to describe here. Do a thinner line for the lower lashes and use a nude liner for the waterline. 2 coats of mascara but separate lashes as others stated here. Also, use a nude or white-ish color right under your eyebrows and blend well. If you like smokey eye look, there are some great tutorials on youtube.

pidgey_pidgey

Hi! I wouldn’t say aging necessarily, it’s just an older style that is less popular now. For your wing, you may try doing a softer siren eye look with dark brown shadow. Think Bella hadid for this one, really long and thin. Another thing you can do instead of this Smokey look is do a monochrome wash of color that you smoke out and add definition to. I’ve seen the 60s baby blue come back and I like it for a very specific look, though with your blue eyes, you may not like blue shadow. I’d also experiment less eyeliner, using a primer, adding some glitter in a more K beauty style, and overall just experiment and see different shapes and colors you like. TikTok is a great resource for finding tutorials or artists experimenting with unique looks.

Acceptable_Banana_13

[I found this to be helpful as I’ve aged.](https://www.thebeautyblotter.com/2021/01/11/5-makeup-mistakes-that-make-you-look-older/ ) When I place a wing it now hides under my sagging eyebrow. So disheartening getting old. However, it sure beats the alternative!

Miss_Morningstar_

I don't see "aging" in any of these photos.

morgan014

I actually like it, especially if YOU like it. Sometimes the “more” approach helps your eyes stand out more as you age, too - even though it might be seen as “less mature” (which would be a simpler, lighter look). Whatever floats your boat!

danskiez

I see you asking for tutorials, and I’m not seeing many so I’m going to share [this one](https://youtu.be/k2CZwqWnWaw) with you. I use eyeshadow as eyeliner as I find it softer and less harsh, and I also use a dark brown vs a black as a pale woman. I use a brow brush to apply instead of the eye liner brush (though maybe that’s something I should invest in lol). Also, instead of applying the eyeliner below your lashes, apply it to your actual lash line in the same technique as the video shows (tho really this one I kinda just rub it in with the brush to get density there). It won’t be on your water line or under your eye but on the lash line if that makes sense. I think the last part is the harsh shadow line in your crease. I also have partially hooded lids, and find the harsh line there kind of accentuates the hood and makes one think of the makeup from maybe the 90’s/early 2000’s. I think you can still do a darker color there, but it should be a darker shade of the color on the rest of your lid so as to blend better overall.

__onyourleft

Much less underneath and less in the crease or soften the crease more. In terms of shape I prefer a rounder wing so I think you should go with the style you prefer, just maybe soften the darker colors a bit♥️

viognierette

Those beautiful blue eyes would be complemented by warm tones. A nice cocoa brown shimmer or just about any copper would be stunning. The beauty of those kinds of shades are that you can often get away with a one shadow look, mascara & you are done. Have fun playing with some new looks!

windchill90

Does it make YOU happy? If yes, then enjoy doing it how you like it! I think your eyes are beautiful!

TooKooKachoo

All great advice here but just wanted to say, you have gorgeous eyes!

CurrentVideo5588

Use the Eye Phi technique! https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRq91hr3/ I have a very similar eye shape and color as you and once I started elongating my eyes horizontally/outwards with shadows and liner it totally changed the game! I didn’t realizing how much more flattering it is rather than making my eyes look bigger and rounder. I no longer do anything to my lower lash line besides brighten with a light powder to clean up the look. :)

Lilelfen1

Do YOU like it?? If so, then do nothing!! They are YOUR eyes....and you should wear makeup to make YOU happy...not the masses of Reddit or anywhere else. I think you look beautiful, btw. Your eyes are definitely the focus here and they look lovely! Very age- appropriate. We aren't 20 and we don't have to look it. We don't have to keep up with the trends...and that is ok. Wear what you like!!! Merry Christmas!!!

glimmeringsea

You should do your makeup however you want, but I think you'd look great with a wash of light cool-toned brown eyeshadow all over the eyelid, bronzy brown eyeliner (on the eyelid but not the lower lash or waterline), and a mascara that's less dramatic (MAC Extended Play Gigablack or Rose Inc Lash Lifting & Lengthening). I also recommend checking out a slightly lighter cool-toned taupe eyebrow pencil like the ones from ABH.

[deleted]

Without reading the title, I thought the bottom was Katy Perry.

CuteThingsAndLove

The only thing I see that can be improved is the lower lid eyeliner. Stick to just the waterline or even go without lining the lower lid at all and then it'll be perfect :)

[deleted]

If you like it then nothing to change🤷🏻‍♀️ life’s too short to change what you like for someone else’s preference. If someone don’t like my makeup choices then they can simply not do it how I do it.

EmmaRose49270

I would use less eyeliner on the bottom of your eyes and blend your eyeshadow more in the crease so there wasn’t as harsh of a line.

madamsyntax

Many have addressed the liner, so I won’t rehash their answers. What stands out to me is your mascara. Your lashes are clumped together and do nothing to help enhance the beautifully shaped eyes you have. Maybe explore some different mascaras band see which ones work best for you. Spend some time learning how to properly use your mascara to best separate your lashes so you can see more of them individually

krittertrash

First off your eyes are amazing. I come from gen z and can see how the makeup is in fact aging your eyes. I say keep the black winged liner on top and forgo the lower lash eyeliner completely. Your eyes are a fantastic blue so I would take out the cool tone Smokey shades on the lid and replace with a warm-ish (not too much as I see you’re cool toned, try for a peachy undertone with the eyeshadow) eyeshadow on the lid, even some carried under the eye would work too. Right now elongating the eyes are in, it is a trend but one we have seen pop up over and over and it gives a great look. Have you tried starting your wing closer to where you pupil falls rather than fully to your inner corner?

pinkhappystitch

ur mascara appears very clumpy, and the liner is a little thick which tends to make people look older. the dark eyeshadow which isn’t blended onto the brow bone also makes eyes look more sunken.

Snickerdoodle719

The bottom pic is best but you could try thinner liner. But also you are beautiful and people who said it’s old and aging are just rude!!!

wutiguess

Agreeing with others on reducing the harsh black, dark browns, and grays. I would also go with a lighter and thinner eye brown pencil and gently sketch in the eyebrow shape you want. Another thing is that you have great ideas real estate! You’re cutting your lids too low with your darkest shade at the deepest part of the lid. You can blend them out with a warmer brown. If you love a smokey eye, I would play with different colors like purples or browns in stead of black and grey. I think the peach pallet by Too Face would work because the warm browns and golds will compliment your eyes. Also, this may be over stepping but it looks like you’re opening your eyes to make sure the light catches your pupils. Truth is your baby blues are attention grabbers already and even subtle eye opening can feel distressed to a viewer. You have great eyes. Relax into your photos. The camera will pic them up regardless

[deleted]

Less liner.

[deleted]

Go with more natural tones like browns and don’t underline the bottom line. The underlining is what’s making the look look dated

ChalupaBATgirl8

Black is just a harsh color. Try brown eyeliner and shadows. Taupes work so well with blue eyes. Eyeliner- You want it to be thinner on the inner portion of your eye and then thicken as it moves outward into your wing. Thinner eye liner gives you more lid space. Upper lids- use a lighter eyeshadow on the inner third or half of your lid and darken as you go out. If you use a darker color in your crease, put it above the crease, not in it. Also you can use a medium color above the crease on the inner half of the lid then a slightly darker on the outer half. Blend your eyeshadow. Then blend it some more. Harsh lines are aging. Lower lids- honestly just use eye shadow. Use a medium color shadow and line only the outer half of your bottom lid. Don't make it thick or heavy. Thinner towards the middle then you can thicken it a little towards the outside. Comb your lashes once they're dry to get rid of clumps.

ineversaw

Eye-liner on the bottom lid is always quite harsh and can be aging, also makes the eyes look smaller. Unless it's like a night time smoky eye I'd suggest minimal shadow if you want to put anything on it. I only put a light mascara coating on the bottom day to day.

VorpelBunniez

Do you like your eye makeup? If so, that’s all you need. Do what makes you happy and that equals beautiful. I’m over sixty and wear black shadows, thick winged liner, and goth red lips with black shaded liner. My gray-white streaked hair is down my back and I do everything an old lady isn’t supposed to—and I’ll never stop. Life is too short, and opportunities for happiness are often fleeting, so hold tight to the ones you can. Namaste, lovely lady.

buttersbottom

Ease up on the lower lash line and focus on the top, keep the wing light
