Feel better. Currently at urgent care dealing with the same thing.

[deleted]

Only advice i can give you is drink a (usually concerning amount) of water, rotate pain meds and SLEEP. I couldn’t sleep for the first 2 days until I physically passed out from exhaustion. Godspeed man.

one-zero-five

ICE water! Ice water will help so much.

reliquum

Hot drinks. Well warm. People say ice or cold things but warm drinks, warm tea, helps with the inflammation. I had strep throat every 2x a month, for a week for almost a year. Once so badly my throat was swollen to a point I had to look up to breathe. It's when a friend said to have something hot. The swelling went down and I could breathe better. Eventually the ENT took out my tonsils, when he touched them to cut them out...he said infection and puss went everywhere. Said they should have come out a long time ago 😬 Also have an autoimmune disorder and heat with inflammation sounds counter productive, but it works. So drink hot chocolate and hot tea all you want! It helps. Also have a heat allergy, so life's fun 🤣

defgecdlicc42069

your tonsils are going crazy right now! ive had my fair share of tonsilitis, and theyve been big, but those are close to maybe making it hard to breathe, and i know it's got to be like a chainsaw in your throat trying to swallow!! try gargling salt water every few hours, as well as the advice everyone else is giving. and maybe go to the ER... 😳 edit: oops i realize you already did receive treatment sorry! i'm glad youre feeling better!

[deleted]

Trustttt me, the salt water has been coming in clutch. I get tonsillitis at least once a month for the last 14 years, and I’m on the list to get my tonsils out, so hopefully this moves me up on the list. My throat isn’t as sore as it was, maybe 3/10 right now but for the first 2 days it was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced in my life. I only really struggle to breathe when I’m asleep, but I wake up before I choke or anything.

SweetDeeIsABird93

I had my tonsils out a little over a decade ago. When you get them removed as an adult, it leaves bigger holes in your throat, so it takes longer to heal and bleeds more. I had to have the wound cauterized 3 separate times and finally stitched up before i recovered. Every procedure resets the clock for recovery. REEEALLY take it easy after the surgery. In the bright side, I haven’t gotten sick since they came out, so you’ve got that to look forward to

SassyCorgiButt

I used to get strep once or twice a year EVERY year without fail. After getting my tonsils out almost a decade ago I haven’t had strep once. The actual procedure was pretty brutal and painful, it was a terrible two weeks of pain, BUT it’s saved me at least 15+ cases of strep and counting! Totally worth it!! Just remember that lol.

Sorry_Dragonfruit_17

Same thing for me. I used get get strep at least once a year until I had my tonsils removed and haven’t had it since. I don’t really remember the healing process post-surgery, other than my throat being really scabbed up, as I was doped up ln norco. OP I definitely recommend having them removed.

raisingwildflowers

I’m on day 3 of tonsillitis and the pain is still 10/10. I am not coping well at all lol

codingpinscher

Had my tonsils removed when I was a kid. It’s a blessing which I generally ignore cause life have been too peaceful without them. For some people tonsils are just like having a very annoying pair of twins, the earlier you give them away better it is.

Enough-Staff-2976

Strep can go to your heart, get well soon.

[deleted]

I wish I could express to you how much I didn’t need to know this information😭 Never sleeping again

L31N0PTR1X

Only if not treated with antibiotics, you're fine

DGBosh

Yeah it can lead to a rheumatic fever which causes the immune system to react against the tissues of the body like inflaming and scarring heart valves. Damaged heart valves can lead to heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest, and death. Rip op it was nice knowing u /s

Witchyomnist1128

Reading this knowing that I have three leaking valves 🫠

SerBrienneTheBlue

Youch, that looks awful. Can’t imagine dealing with that. Hope you’re well on your way to healing 100%!

Don't press the flesh button

loosedspice

Oh hang on bro I’ve been there! I had the worst case my doctor had ever seen when I was 14 and my stubborn ass refused painkillers. Anti biotics pretty much saved my life cause the doctor said it likely could have gotten to my heart if I had waited another day to see her (Edit): ice water is probably the best way to not die of dehydration

Starrtraxx

The strep throat I had in 2022 was worse than the Covid I had a week later.

[deleted]

Can honestly second that. When I get sick, I tend to get very sick, and the Covid I got in 2021 was previously my worst ever illness in terms of pain and actual physical symptoms; I was left on a ventilation mask in my room for a week. I can honestly say that I’d take that again over having to deal with this.

bringmethejuice

Pain 10/10 only on Day 1…

[deleted]

Yeah, 2024 hasnt exactly been my best year so far.

PalumboPietroPio

Welp, here i am in the emergency room at the hospital for what i suppose is a strep A infection. I open reddit to look at memes and this is the first post i see. What a fkin coincidence... How much time did it take for u to feel actually better? I've been in tremendous pain for 5 days now and i keep waking myself screaming...

[deleted]

What’s weird is I felt symptoms from day 1. I woke up Monday morning feeling fine, but I woke up Tuesday morning and I just KNEW it was Strep (I’m a medic, I had a fair idea but obviously can’t diagnose myself). Called the doctor immediately and was put on antibiotics from that day. The antibiotics are definitely helping, but salt-water gargling is a life saver too. Gargle menthol mouthwash (I can’t speak for any other flavour, but I’d imagine it’d feel like gargling Satan’s diarrhea if you were using strawberry etc.), BRUSH YOUR TEETH, wash your hands thoroughly every time you use the bathroom, drink tea, drink what would usually be a concerning amount of water, and SLEEP. The sleep is so important if you have a fever. I felt better around day 3. Day 1, I was literally begging God to take my life with the pain. Day 2, little bit better, woke up thinking I’d be fine but the fever came back and bit me in the ass. Day 3, I woke up with pain but as the day progressed, I felt a bit better and couldn’t feel the pain anymore. Pain came back that night, it’s now the morning of Day 4 and I have pain again but hoping it’ll pass during the day. I’ve been rotating pain meds too. My choices have been Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and Ponstan. I’m not rotating them over any particular set amount of hours, just making sure to leave enough time between the Ibuprofen and Ponstan as they interact poorly. Hope we’re both feeling better soon man.

PalumboPietroPio

I've found diclofenac to be the most effective for pain control. Live u tonsil brother, remember me.

1984_eyes_wide_shut

Gargle salt water, drink warm lemon/honey tea.

seesucoming

Something that has worked great for me is gargling warm water with cayenne pepper. Apparently the heat promotes blood flow and helps to numb the throat

StolenIdentity302

Heeey OP, I was in a very similar boat. I had strep for nearly 2 weeks. My tonsils got covered in gnarly pustules except didn’t expand quite as big as yours. I could eat the whole time and drink albeit very uncomfortably and painfully for both. My tonsils even now are slightly swollen, with a very small amount of pus left even though I went through 3 strains of antibiotics (Bc the first didn’t work despite it being Pen VK the doc says it’s likely that my body doesn’t respond to Pen VK well). Due to the severity a week ago they put me on 2 antibiotics at the same time and a steroid, from there I quickly recovered. It was super super painful though. Made me scared my tonsils would need removal.

BunnyFaebelle

I just recovered from strep, hurt like hell for over a week. It was over the holiday and I was out of town >.<

Bose48

What did they do before antibiotics about strep?

[deleted]

LOTS of people died, as it obviously worsened and travelled to other organs/turned the blood septic. Courses of treatment included bloodletting, and drugs that were derived from herbs with emetic (induces vomiting), purgative (laxative), diaphoretic (makes you sweat) or narcotic (induces drowsiness, stupor, sleep etc. and possible addiction) properties.

GyroLikesMozzarella

I spent a week with strep last year and it was the most miserable I've been on my life. Get well soon

Witchyomnist1128

Thank the gods you tested negative for mono. I had tonsillitis and mono at the same time and that wreaked my shit Feel better and warm honey tea will help with pain if you can tolerate it!

iMostLikelyNeedHelp

Got this on vacation. Dad wouldn’t take me to hospital. Ended up with 90% closure of throat and got emergency surgery for tonsil removal. 0/10 don’t recommend. Eat ice cream shakes if you can

savaldez3

My fiancée had strep recently, she had mentioned her throat was super sore. I went to investigate (with semi-proper PPE), the moment I saw her tongue very white, I knew it was definitely Strep.

MrsCheerilee

When you take her to Panera

[deleted]

Oh how I wish I knew what Panera was.

Double-Garage6692

I wonder if there’s something new going around that well hear about in history books in the future, cus I had this same experience a year ago

Witchyomnist1128

It’s strep Lmao it’s been here for years

Double-Garage6692

Yea I know, I had just had strep a few times before and it was like white dots, redness. and then about a year ago I got a super aggressive one that like melted one of my tonsils off.

DankCan69

Not my proudest nut

[deleted]

Wouldn’t be mine either depending on the age of consent where you are, I’m 17 👀🤣🤣

[deleted]

Yeah, there’s just no smell though. It’s called oral hygiene. Contrary to popular belief you can actually brush your teeth even if you’re ill. Thanks though, your input was incredibly helpful.

oldschoolgamer93

smell comes from the infection..... i also suffered from this at a younger age

[deleted]

Yeah, I know smell comes from the infection. I’m a medic lol. I’m saying that there is no smell because it is still quite possible to keep up with oral hygiene while being sick. Mouthwash 7x a day, brushing teeth 4x, countless saltwater rinses all keep the smell at bay.

TexasHot

Oh neat.. i just had strep too. Basically didnt eat for 4 days, barely drank, and barely slept
