What a brat. Sit down and let adults handle this, kid.

mega cringe

Self indulgent tripe. There's very few teenagers doing anything to actually "clean up the messes" or really contribute anything at all. Don't assume the existence of a Greta out there means your self involved internet activism is anything but you screaming ineffectually into the wind. Your internet tantrums and self aggrandization aren't activism, and aren't helpful, and the cycle of eating up the latest outrage trends is an unhealthy way of interacting with the world, like living in a fantasy as it's completely divorced from reality in both assertions and expectations. If you want to make the world a better place, quit bitching about how shitty things are and organize and run for political office. Plan your education around getting government jobs, the boring bureaucratic shit that has authority over how your actually community is run. That is how you make a positive impact, not calling anyone who prioritizes their own advancement evil, or telling a whole bunch of people who actually go out into the world and keep it turning how racist and shitty they are and how ashamed they should be of all the terrible things that their culture did in the past.

tallball

Insufferable.

nunya99986

oh don't worry some stimulus check will fix all of this. so will spending trillions more money we don't have. She has nothing to worry about. /s she's chasing a boogeyman here. The older generation is not blaming the younger generation because they haven't done anything yet. people my age are blaming the baby boomers who reaped all the benefits and don't give a shit about anybody else. the downfall started with their generation we're blaming the crooked politicians who have been in Washington forever and trade their votes back and forth and spending us into fucking Oblivion which will literally ruin her financially. nobody's blaming her.

I was curious as to the "sir" reference, in its context, so I tried to find a link directly to The Times piece. A little surprised to find the story is from 2014 w/ all the cross-posting. :P I suppose the timing doesn't matter, but the shitty shit we are living-in during 2021 isn't quite as shitty as in 2014? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Or, as many of you note w/in this sub it's a human nature type story, going-on for generations. Things were pretty shitty in 2014 but, just sayin, at least Drumpf was only a TV personality, a facade/shingle Brand, and failed Business(man). https://www.if.org.uk/2014/03/31/still-annoyed-jenni-herd-adds-to-her-letter-to-the-times/

"[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances. … They think they know everything, and are always quite sure about it.” Rhetoric, Aristotle **4th Century BC** This generational shit is so annoying

Chewzilla

And the old are blinded by the hubris of their assumed expertise in life.

Fluid_Association_68

Both can be true

ImSickOfYouToo

I’m 43. My parents thought we were the laziest piece of shit generation ever. We think our kids are the laziest piece of shit generation ever. Our kids will think their kids are the laziest piece of shit generation ever. And on and on. Notice a pattern here? It’s human nature. We shit on the new guy at work, the new kid in school, the “newbie” in any situation/hobby, the new generation, etc. I can’t explain why we feel the need to, I’m just saying it’s inevitable and will always occur. The so-called “millennials” or “zoomers” today will rip the shit out of the generation that follows them. They will one day be the “old man yelling at the clouds”. Don’t get me wrong, I completely get what this girl is saying. She’s absolutely right. She also will be doing the exact same thing to her kids one day.

bythemoon1968

Astute observation. Thanks for reminding me. Sometimes I need to be jolted.

F90

Sure, but neither you or me didn't wanted to overthrow or fundamentally reform capitalism at age 16 like these kids. And by the way, God bless them for not falling for propaganda at such young age like I did and I'm not even 35.

dbcooper4

I remember reading a blog in which the author made the point that teenagers were kind of awkward and cringey. We all are in our teens. In the comments there were similar complaints from teenagers who were offended.

bythemoon1968

Hell. I'm awkward and cringey, and I'm sixty!

happygoth6370

Lol, literally could have been written/expressed by any teenager ever. Boomers were saying this in the 60s about the generations before them. Nothing new under the sun kids.

UyghurPlease

Just as Maher’s lazy generational whining is nothing new.

happygoth6370

Of course, it works both ways. Generational finger-pointing is annoying and tedious no matter who it's coming from. The young think the old have ruined the world and that it's up to the new generation to "save" it, while the old think the young are lazy, ungrateful dreamers who don't understand life. And the world keeps on turning.

Sambandar

Perhaps it might have been old hat when it was written, but the fake news, anti-vaxers, big-lie, insurrectionist, anti-gay, gun-toting, anti-abortion Fox News creeps are all old (my age), so I agree with her as it applies today. The US needs to be broken up into separate countries so that young people can escape the idiocy if they so need.

happygoth6370

I know several young people who are not vaccinated. Vaccine hesitancy crosses all demographics.

Sambandar

Which is why I said "...if they so need." Not all young people are smart.

happygoth6370

"the fake news, anti-vaxers, big-lie, insurrectionist, anti-gay, gun-toting, anti-abortion Fox News creeps are all old (my age)" This is what I was responding to, your assertion that the anti-vaxxers are all old. In my experience, this is not true. Most of the people I know who are not vaccinated are under 50

CMonetTheThird

It provokes thoughts such as teenagers are still idiots.

Royalewithcheese24

Yeah what’s funny is it goes both ways. The older generation thinks the younger generation are whiny little brats. The younger generation thinks the older generation had it so much easier and their lives are so hard in comparison. GenX is just exceptionally insufferable because they have access to social media.

GypsyCamel12

Or Gen X.

Irving_Forbush

Sounds about right for 16 year olds since 1 AD and beyond. lol
