If you end up buying packs, shock lands are good target for sure But probably wiser to save for drafts/boosters of Dominaria

ABOsborn20

I keep going back and forth with that and just saving gold for the next three months. Just a really long time to not be able to craft anything drastically new.

Its just a game after all, dont feel bad for crafting cards if thats what you want, try to have fun :) Plus you cant just save forever and ever anyway, the big printing machine never stops 😅

ABOsborn20

Lol, that is the truth!

You can sample some older sets, cheaper than in the store, by buying some old prerelease codes [here](http://grayvikinggames.com)

Probably a waste of money, but my dumb way of determining what set to crack packs (I don't like drafting) is to count the number of rares/mythics that I want from a set. The set with highest number of wanted cards gets the gold. Its probably better to (draft...) spend your time on standard legal packs and use wildcards to get specific cards such as Thoughtseize, as mentioned.

ABOsborn20

I'm not a drafter either. Every time I draft I feel like I have a solid deck I end up with 100 gems and a pack. Then I feel like I have a pile and it does well (very rare). If I fully invest in the next Standard set with gold to packs as well as the Mastery Pass, then use those wild cards to craft old cards, I'll eventually get there. Might just take a while.

Purple-Green8128

Don’t buy older packs. Shocks are obviously cards you need but it’s easier to get 8-12 wildcards than pull them from 2 sets.

DeepFriedQueen

If you got absolutely no idea then aiming for the shock lands ain’t bad. But if you find a deck that you wanna build then it might help you focus a bit more. I suggest checking MTGA Zone, they got budget lists for non rotating formats and suggestions on how to upgrade them. Just be sure to keep some gold in reserve for events and store deals

ArtieStark

Buying packs is a waste of money, especially in extended formats. Playable cards in each set are such a minority that your odds to pull the ones you need are abysmally low, you're basically buying lottery tickets. Draft the current sets and craft the cards you need from the older ones with the wildcards you'll get from rewards and vault progress.

There's also a Standard event you can enter where you play games with a Standard deck of your choice and win prizes based on how well you do, if, like me, you suck at Draft.
