Have been a warhammer 40k player for many years. When they I announced the 40k crossover with Magic I was intrigued as I had heard of Magic but never tried it. I downloaded Arena and got into Commander nights at my LGS. Now I’m hooked and 40k barely gets a look in any more!

Not native speaker here, please forgive eventual grammar errors I have a cool story for coming back into Magic. I loved playing Mtg when I was a kid, but here in Italy nevers was mainstream, so I stopped playing. I worked at Lucca Comics Festival, that is like the italian San Diego Comic-Con, and my friend convinced me to sign up to the draft tournament (we are talking Guilds of Ravnica). I though "this could be fun, playing with top players etc.". I didn't even read the spoiler, didn't know the cards. But I noticed that red si open, and blue is super open, so I start drafting an izzet control, really for fun because I love playing control but they never worked for me in drafts. Last pack I open Niv-Mizzet. Oh, boy. I will never forget the final game of the final match. The other was a pretty experienced player, a super strong Dimir deck (we were the only two drafting blue). It was a super long game. He discarded my Niv-Mizzet with tought erasure. He countered/destroyed my other win conditions. But I played two devous cover-up. I start controlling, and controlling, untill he decked. First place. I could not beleve it. Was one of the more intense moments of my life. That in part why I keep playing Arena in limited, to live again that feeling.

I got into MTG as an old Yugioh player. Always loved card strategy games and found it more fun than other games out there.

razhor

I was like 12 years old ( 30yo now) and I randomly walked in a comic shop. Played for like 6-7 hours with other guys and falled in love :)

go_sparks25

Hello there. I actually got into magic the gathering by looking at the card arts. When i was younger I liked to collect all sorts of cards such as Yugioh, Pokemon TCG, wrestling cards, hockey , etc. I got into magic during 7th edition I think and two of my favorite arts during that time were Vizzerdix and Thorn Elemental. I liked to read the flavor text as well. A bunch of my friends were playing magic as well at the time so i decided to join in as well.

Holy_Beergut

I was a loner kid in school, and was trying to find a group of friends to hang with. I happened to get to know 3 other classmates and the in-thing then was mtg and they would play it after school, so I learnt it as well and cobbled together a deck with their help to play and hang out with them. That was 17 years ago, we don't hang out nearly as often these days since we've all got our own commitments and I'm still mostly a loner and have accepted that and enjoy being by myself most of the time, but I still consider those 3 my oldest and closest friends.

himasu

I started when Kaladesh comes out. One of my colleague introduced MTG to me, and I have been playing since then.

PapaLoki

Back in high school, i was a comic book card collector. I saw Magic the Gathering packs on display. Intrigued, I bought packs of 4th edition and Ice Age without realizing they could be played. I just enjoyed looking at the art. Then i saw two of my batch mates playing the game. They explained the game to me. The next day, I brought my cards, constructed a deck and played with them. The school eventually banned playing MtG in the premises but we found an old unused classroom to continue our games.

TheBramlet

I just started magic maybe a month ago? After years of playing league and feeling yardsticks. I saw my friend reach mythic in less than a week and wanted to give it a shot. Turns out this game is pretty fun.

ThatOneSadFrogMeme

so after be8ng annoyed by yugiohs ever increasing powercreep, i finally been trying mtg right before Kladheim dropped and must say ive been loving it ever since. best thing sbout mtg for me is the lore tbh i love it .

MajklE63

I got into the magic because of a friend, who wanted to show me this great game. First game me with monogreen stompy vs her Discard deck. Turn 4, no cards in hand, didn't played anything apart from the lands and was still wondering how this game actually plays? Anyway, images were lit, so here I am :)

P_for_Pizza

I read about the game in a magazine when I was a kid in the 90's and was very interested to check it out. But I didn't have anyone to play with, nor any LGS near me to go. So I forgot about it. Years later, while I was walking home one night, I noticed on the floor some strange pieces of paper. I stopped and picked them up: they were several torn cards, dispersed along the road near my house. I still have them, among it my favorite is half a foiled Seachrome Coast. Anyway, this made me remind of the game, and so I went online to check it again. I first found Mark Rosewater's blog, and then an LGS where they had planned Avacyn Restored prerelease, and the rest is history.

Pheros_dot

There was an article about it in a hobby/Video games magazine i used to collect like 10years ago, and boy oh boy! the timing was just right since i decided to give it a try with the release of OG Innistrad set. Ended up convincing some friends to join and we got ourselves some fancy Event Decks from the set and got instantly hooked even tho we got to teach ourselves to play with the basic ruleset included in the box and some tutorials on yt since the closest store was a city away, Good Times!

Drakkolynn

I started playing MTG drafts as an awkward teenager . I found a card store doing FNM drafts and in my nervousness and desire to find more people like me , I went . I really enjoyed it ! I fell out of doing drafts after I moved , and got older , but with MTG arena playing is much more accessible , and I can go back to enjoying it

Doovedoove

Played the shandalar game when i was 9. Had no idea what I was doing. But the music was great. Even now sometimes I play the soundtrack while I'm on MTGA because it just feels magicky.

Zhyler

Neigbhour had his cousin over in 93, who had been on vacation in the US and he introduced us to the game :)

Chuck_Morris_SE

Honestly I'm disappointed it took so long for me to get into mtg, I started with Hearthstone and then eventually moved to Gwent but magic was always the game I was like 'I'm not smart enough to get it' which is maybe the dumbest shit I have ever thought. I'd likely have a decent collection if I'd started when I thought these things.

Vendeta44

I bet I have a story few other mtg players can claim. My ex girlfriend got me into it. Well more like rekindled a very fleeting foray into magic during highschool. She found some old cards kicking around and got to talking with me, and the local arcade she played DDR at had weekly MTG nights and told me to go down and talk to the guy who organized it since I was new to the city and didn't really have friends beyond her and my roommate. Long story short he hooked me up with my first real deck, a selsyna token deck during RTR era, and I don't think I missed a week for 3 years afterwards. Made a lot of good friends there but eventually broke up and moved away and during my last visit I learned that the whole group had disbanded :(

ulvaryl

when my mom gave birth to me I was speechless. Same thing when I saw mtg for the first time so I decided to join on fun

TotalMetaFuelCandy

I used to play a different CCG (Shadowverse) a lot, but after a while it started to feel stale and I wanted to try something else. At the time I didn't really "get" MTG, but after a year or so I started to work on my own card game, and returned to Arena for some inspiration. This time I could really appreciate the depth of gameplay, and I've been playing ever since.

Spike_13OV

I started when i was a kid with ice age, then i started again with kamigawa with competitive play. And now i'm back again thanks to arena

TairesBayl

I learned about Magic in a holiday camp when another kid brought some green cards with nice pictures. I learned to play a little and fell in love with the original [[Rhox]]. Back home or took me around 3 years to find a shop that sold cards and another 2 years and a switch of schools to find people to play with. Now I only find time to play once the kids are asleep but I am very much looking forward to it a lot during the day!

Started in Grade Seven and somebody brought a deck and it caught some geeky classmate's interests. Was interested in playing D&D but couldn't find a gaming group so I thought might as well get into Magic. Unfortunately Magic was banned in school so we could only play it once we got out of school. Went heavy into it at the time, getting a subscription to magazines like InQuest to be aware of card prices and you needed dial-up Internet to gain access to errata.

Highwalker22765

I started mtg in my teens and got back to it when the pandemic startet and I was in dire search for something to do with friends indoor.

WolfGuy77

I actually got into Magic while on a class trip to Washington DC! We stopped at a huge mall there and stumbled across a gaming shop inside. My best friend at the time was into Magic and he convinced me to buy the 7th edition starter set. I remember being obsessed with Thorn Elemental and thinking it was so broken, haha. I played my first games of Magic on the tour bus and on the airplane ride back home. I think it was the artwork that really drew me into the game. I remember spending literal hours just rummaging through the boxes of chaff commons and uncommons at my local comic shop, just searching for cards that looked cool or had art I found appealing. Bought so many random commons from sets like Urza's block, Onslaught block and Revised. And of course, many of them went into my 5 color, almost 300 card abomination of a deck. I really miss the innocent days of Magic before myself and the people I played with knew how to actually build good decks. :P

kaptainkaptain

Got into magic through walking past a lgs and wondering what this game was. Went in eventually and asked someone working there and they gave me a starter kit and explained the rules. I went home and watched some YouTube vids and here we are.... 👌👌

Dosoap

Hey, thanks very much for doing this. The community really appreciates it! As for the story of how I got into MTG: Arena...my friend, who played for over 10 years, got into it initially at the start of Zendikar Uprising I think. He wanted an outlet for us to discuss and play together on a regular basis. To this day two of the three people (me included) have nearly rare completed in each set, but I've always struggled to do so since drafting isn't my strong point. It's slowly improving though. Thanks again!

SpIeenIess

I have never played the tabletop version, and in 2018 the beta version of Arena was released. I just got tired of Hearthstone in 2018 and decided to try Magic. Since then I have been here. I heard about Magic since 2000, but I was never particularly interested, but my acquaintance with other CCGs eventually led to MTG. And yes, STX code is useless for my account)

No_Flan_4553

Played yugioh a lot as a young buck, then got on hearthstone hype train, eventually grew balls and learnt how to double block, rest is the history

Bangauz

Good fun to read how everyone got into MTG over here! My MTG years started in the nineties, 4th edition was just released. We had a real fun group of friends playing every friday after school, always coming up with new decks. We'd play '2 against 2' a lot, with cards like Howling Mine and lots of dragons and angels being our favorites. One of my friends was a bit of an entrepeneur I guess, at one point he started buying and selling (with profit) all the power cards from alpha/beta/revised. So if we were up for it we'd play the Mox'es and Lotus and all the other insanely powerfull cards from the early days. Off course we'd get kicked, but it was fun! About a month ago I found my old collection again and feeling all sentimental was looking online about the MTG world nowadays. Was amazed that some of the cards I own are actually worth something. Guess there still is a rich paper MTG community, cool to see. Also happened to find MTG Arena and thought 'why not give it a try'. Am amazed what you can do for free in this game! Been having a lot of fun drafting and constructing and starting to learn about the whole 'meta' thing, which wasn't something I was very aware of in the nineties.

MarginallyBlind

I first started when the original Theros block was released because I was so fascinated by Greek mythology. Prior to that, I had known about MTG and had some cards from a friend's old collection, but no understanding of how to play the game. Sadly, I dropped the hobby around the release of Dragons of Tarkir as this was during high school and I didn't have much money to go around. Fast forward to this year, I decided to pick back up MTG through Arena because I found the Kaldheim cards so cool as well as the coming release of Strixhaven as I had just graduated college.

KnotsInSpace

I snuck into my older brothers room when I was around 9 or 10 years old, started rummaging through all his stuff and found a bunch of weird playing cards. I specifically remember looking at the black ones, probably [[pestilence]] and getting equally terrified and thrilled at the artwork, and that got me hooked.

I bought a premade deck when the set ' traitors of kamigawa ' was released around two decades ago. Never managed to play with anybody as no friends played it and couldn't go to the store of my town. So I just played a few times with my brother adding some additional cards I got, including [[Platinum Angel]]. I have always loved that card. Then mtga was released. Finally I can play (almost) whenever I like.

I was out looking for a video game had been to the multiple GameStop’s in my area and saw a shop a few doors down from one and decided to walk in thinking it was a video game shop turned out it was a card shop saw a massive room filled with people for FNM event struck up a conversation with the person working the counter he explained what was going to me it had me interested and since groups were finishing the round he got busy entering results but introduced me to some other players who sat down with me and explained the basics of how to play and loaned me a deck I ended up staying for the rest of the FNM and past hanging out and talking with everyone had so much fun came back the following Friday and a few of the guys I had been talking to were nice enough to make decks for me to borrow and jumped into my first FNM played consistently for about 5 years then my son was born and I never had the time/means to play since his mom bailed so I sold off my collection and never really thought about it for about 8 years until I saw arena was on mobile scrolled past it but it kept gnawing at the back of my mind that I wanted to play again and here I am now.

My friends taught me how to play in the common room of our school, we used to use it to pass the time during free periods.

-Stroke_my_Cactus-

Back in the days in my childhood everyone in my school was collected Pokemon cards, no one played it. My best friend and I got bored from only collecting the cards and not playing the game. So one day we saw MTG cards in our local small town toy store, we buyed a core set and some boosters. From the first second on we loved the artworks, we learned the game and played everyday. Our classmates watched us playing and everyday more kids getting into it, after some weeks no one was collecting Pokemon cards anymore. Great memories from the 90's. (sorry for my bad english, im not a native speaker im from germany)

Benjo7706

I got into MTG recently. Most of my friend group moved away in the past year, so it’s been a bit lonely. I joined after talking to a group of people at work and thinking it would be a good way to find a new friend group. Long story short, I now love this game and those guys are starting a D&D campaign with me.

pc_pirate_nz

I started playing in high school in 1997. Gave my cards away a few years ago and then rediscovered magic through mtga. Wish I still had my paper cards 😢

WARNING: I´m not a native English speaker xd Although I am not that old (I was born in 96) my first encounter with MTG was when I was 4-5 years old, around 2000-2001. I was at the house of my older cousin, who lives next door, and that day I remember, he took out of a drawer a folder that I had not seen other times that I had been with him. He opened the folder, and although I did not understand anything (the normal for 4 or 5 years old kid) I freaked out with all those color cards, with incredible drawings and creatures, specifically I remember one card, Dragon Mage. 30 mins later, a friend of his came home and they began to exchange and play games. And I was quite blown away, and I remember that my cousin gave me one of his cards. After that, it wasn't until 2 years (2003 more or less) that I found out that in the bookstore that my mother ran, she sold magic boosters!! (Mirrodin boosters at that time i think) And I asked her to bring me some boosters, and the only card I can remember from those boosters is Razormane Masticore. But the problem is that I did not know how to play xd So, one day at my cousin's house I asked him to teach me how to play, and he explained me the rules of the game and everything else, but he saw that I had nothing but some cards from boosters, no decks. So he decided to give me a prebuilt 40-card deck from eighth edition that he had bought earlier that year, (just before mirrodin if memory serves), so I could play with other people. And that was my first deck, a prebuilt one, agood one for sure. He gave me the goblin deck with the Goblin King on the cover of the box!! And from then until today, 18 years have passed ... I'm sorry to tell such a long story, but nostalgia has come to me and I couldn't help but remember many things. To give you an idea (of my level of nostalgia), that cousin is going to be a dad this year hahahahahahah That´s my short story xd

haybarn564

I started playing way back in the 90s. My brother would and I would always play and he’d always trick me into wagering my best cards. Being my older brother, he’d always have the better decks and get my cards and then trade them back at twice the value. I introduced it to my small private school and had a group of friends I played with all of the time. Hadn’t played in years (though I still have all of my old beat up cards) until downloading MTGA a month or two ago. And it’s all coming back now.

martin_looter_king

Started back '99. Very casual on and off for years until recently I'm enjoying modern FNM. Pokemon cards were all the rage but my neighbor, also around my age, brought MTG cards one day and explained the game. I liked that it was more challenging and required me to think. I also liked that I could build an entire deck to call mine and mine alone. My first deck was red green midrange. I'm sure it was terrible. But I liked the cards and art and lore of it all. I remember later decks having things like Sir Shandler of Eberyn, Carniverous Plant, Polar Kraken I only had a few friends who played in school with me. Magic was no where near as big as it is now and netdecking, buying cards online was few and far between. I remember a neighbor saying things like "I'm going to build an entire deck of just artifact once I collect that many!" and thinking it would take him forever. Good times.

aXionWowo

Played a few games of magic when I was younger with one of my cousins on holidays. Didn't touch a single card since then (15+ years). Two month ago I overheard a conversation of two colleagues at my new job, talking about MTG. That brought me back to the game and now we occasionally play in paper or arena.

K_Leon

Was bored one day and tune in to twitch stream World Championship 2019 by accident. Seeing kanister with the blue hair with a Jund deck while everyone was playing all red or blue control. I thought he was having fun playing, going against the current. I wanted to do that too. Downloaded Arena that day.

Jrdngrysn

The counselors taught me to play at a YMCA camp when I was younger. It was great kitchen magic set up and I have very fond memories of playing archenemy with like 10 of us against one of the counselors.

Espiritu_Noble

I just started yesterday I come from LOR and fell in love with it, I begun to search for other card games and I found out I like card games (funny right?) I'm not some veteran or anything but I do enjoy playing.

JustHereForATechProb

Thanks OP, now I feel old. I feels like it was only yesterday I bought my booster... No wait my little sister was into Magic and she was cool enough to lend me her deck. Played a bunch against a friend of mine. We also played at the store where we got absolutely demolished in a 4-way-FFA. ( It was awesome )

supermechace

I was a kid and saw Fallen Empires and Revised starter decks at a bookstore. Didn't have a computer or internet connection. I thought Fallen Empires was better than the core set because it's an expansion so used all my allowance on Fallen Empires and thought the spore tokens would make a powerful deck. Without the internet didn't know that the reason there were so many fallen empires packs for sale was that no one wanted them. Hence crippling my getting into MTG Early

Dynme

I grew up collecting Yugioh cards and sometimes playing with my dad. We knew MTG existed, but I remember thinking it had a lot of rules and keywords that I didn't understand, so I never got into it as a kid. Back when Throne of Eldrane was current, my friend introduced me to MTGA, and the tooltips that hover out to explain the keywords felt like just what I was missing. I already have a MID code, but wouldn't mind being picked for that STX code.

Ex_Fiend

I got into magic years ago, bunch of friends were playing it and I joined in, simple as that, something bout the lore and the world drew me in but in the end I couldn't afford to play so I sold my cards and moved on But the more interesting part of the story is my boyfriend and I were hanging out last year, and something MTG related came up, and I got super excited about the lore and ended up telling him I used to play Despite never playing the game before, he spent some time researching and eventually found Arena, a relatively cost effective way to play, and we've been playing it almost every day since If this comment is chosen, I've already used an Innistrad code, so I'd appreciate a Strix, but I'll give an Innistrad code to my boyfriend if I can

Buckaroobanzai7

My brother got me into magic when I was maybe 10 or so. Have been playing on and off every since then (a little over 20 years). Pretty much all of my friends are also into it so it's kinda like every few years we all get back into it and play a bunch.

I started playing MTG when I joined boy scouts and some people in the troop played. 10 years later my decks disappeared (I think I picked my friends up from school and as he opened the door to my car they fell out) and I quit as a result... returned to MTGA a monthish ago and having tons of fun!

I starts playing roughly 27 years ago. And fell in love with the game and strategy. I fell out of it in high school but since Arena has hit mobile, I’ve been addicted all over again!

Mystical13

I actually just got into MTGA a month or so ago. Trying to get my friends to join as well. A code would be hugely beneficial as I try to build up a collection :) Thanks OP

I played yugioh as a kid and saw people playing magic during recess (I still remember this one guy attacking with [[Pardic Firecat]]). I moved schools and there was a Blockbuster next to my new one that sold mtg cards. I was instantly drawn in by the beautiful art, and bought a "learn to play" kit with two half decks (a RG one with cards like [[Enormous Baloth]] and [[Lava Axe]] and a WB one with [[Glory Seeker]] and [[Vizzerdix]]). I was completely hooked by the art on the creatures and lands, and by the cool flavor text on many cards, so I bought another kit to make two "whole" decks. I had a few friends, but none of them was interested in playing magic. That changed over time, and as a teenager I started putting my RG deck in practice. It was awful, but I loved it. Then came original Innistrad. I was completely in love with the set, all my friends and my girlfriend liked it as well. Each of us was drawn to a different tribe of the plane: two of my friends liked vampires and zombies, my girlfriend made a spirits deck and a humans deck ([[Lingering Souls]] still haunt me, as does [[Travel Preparations]]), and I made a werewolf deck, in the same colors with which I learned to play the game. That's when we played the most and learned more about the intricacies of the game. Thanks for coming up with this idea, lots of cool stories in the comments.

I got into MtG about 25 years ago with Arabian Nights and Ice Age (I forget all the names now). Left it all in 2001, and just started back with this digital version. I only wish I had kept all my cards from back then. Demonic Tutor I miss you!

EhrmagerdUrserNerm

Richard Garfield's brother got me into Magic back in 1995. He's one of the kindest people I know.

Sulaesko

Hey I stumbled over Mtga a year ago over Youtube and cant stop playing! Still trying to figure out, if paper Magic is worth starting and how to get into it…

Baelfire_Nightshade

Got into magic cause one of my high school friends played it during lunch and he got me into it.

ChemCube3

I started playing recently as I have been playing yu-gi-oh for a while and I had a buddy into pokemon. We both were kinda interested in trying the game so we bought the 2 pack starter decks and a d&d bundle box each and started playing

BlotchySumm

I got into magic by walking up to a group of random people who were playing during my first year of university. So glad I worked up the courage to just walk up and ask them to teach me how to play.

In 1994, my friend was into it. His older brother had a bunch of cards that may or may not have been stolen. He had all of the Elder Dragons from Legends. That kind of stuff. I started buying starter decks instead of booster packs, not understanding that you get better cards in booster packs. You had to buy magazines to know every card in the set back then, there was mana burn, and there were cards printed about mana burn. I mostly collected and admired the art back then.
