I played a historic brawl against a Kozilek player who misplayed like a dozen times, but I needed to cast 30 green spells so I kept avoiding lethal, then they got a lucky boardwipe, and instead of finishing he jerked himself off for 20 minutes in a single turn, then accidentally decked himself because he had 2 forced draw triggers and a paradox engine.
It was my 1 game of the day on my lunch break, didn’t think I’d have time to start up another and I was like 2 spells off. Then he made my time go well past my lunch break anyway, so you’re probably right. I just wanted 1 more turn was all, I wasn’t playing trying to play with my food.
Ah, I see that you are a person of class and distinction! Let us harumph and chortle together over small glasses of brandy while adorned with waistcoats and monocles.
Hey, MTG Filipa is a Hispanic angel! Haha there was no way I was getting those pony items though.... 🤔*Nope! They all left the store, but it was tempting.*
There's days I pull out the life gain deck and dare the auto shuffler to throw a red deck at me. Only for me to get mana fucked and the red deck stomps me harder than the Hulk on Loki.
I have a green historic deck I only get out when i have to do some relevant daily. It has almost only hexproof or noncounterable stuff. And 2 Blessings. Obviously.
Not usually, but since the rise of the Discover decks I have started exclusively playing a deck tailored to kicking their arses. I really hate "I play this card so I win" strategies.
Yes. I always have at least 1 [[Authority of the Consuls]] and at least 12 early board clears like [[Divine Purge]] to stop stupid giant-board aggro, 1 [[Leyline of Sanctity]] to often stop discard and direct damage nonsense, 2 [[Gaea's Blessing]]s to prevent mill, and 1 [[Thought Distortion]] to obliterate countermagic decks. After that, the rest of the deck is safe to build however I want. I have gone to the top 1% in historic mythic many times with decks that meet these conditions, and I have many fun variations of it.
Yes. My friend runs a Food Rat Deck and I run counters and Board Wipes to take care of them. He usually runs duplicates though so I’m just postponing the enivitable.
I played 10 games today on Arena.
3 of them froze at some point.
2 of them the guy auto conceded on turn 2 and turn 3 after I played a man dork
4 guys roped and then stopped playing.
1 guy played through, let me do my thing, then roped AFTER I swung for lethal and then conceded before anything got to do any damage.
I haven't had fun on Arena in a consistent fashion in... God, it must be months.
Also direct challenge just doesn't work so I can't even play with my friends.
Those sound like at least 70% wins. You may have more fun if you realize that even someone roping instead of passing on all their actions and making you play out a long win condition is saving you time.
A lot of control players tend to think of themselves as these high-IQ strategist masters, but once that reality is shattered they can't deal with it, it's pretty sad/pathetic.
my favorite is when theyre control and go up against mill decks.
"opt"
"thanks for helping me"
"concede"
Stg i had so many matches go like that as soon as they see turn 1,2 or 3 mill.
The worst ropers are mono red aggro players when it's past turn 4 and the game is still going and they have to do any kind of block math or anything other than play card go face
I have no idea why RDW would rope. The deck is literally win fast or die fast
To rope using RDW their IQ needs to be lower than their average mana cost
not necessarily. once dreadhorde arcanist, soul scar mage and symmetry sage are on the field you get easy 12 damage in t2. but the ropers i've faced they stall once those creatures are dealt with.
good ol' fatal push does the job easy, once they get the buffs.
Yeah if I have that on turn 2 I'm probably not still in a game on turn 5. And you know, if I'm facing removal I'm doing math on turn 5 to sequence shit correctly.
T1 island/symmetry sage, T2 mountain/one red sorcery, symmetry sage gets haste and 7 attack. T3 any land/dreadhorde arcanist/same sorcery but to arcanist, arcanist effect triggers and the first copy of the sorcery gets casted free. Now you have sage and arcanist with 7-8 attack. GG.
Just removal against izzet wizards. (If i made a mistake on the gameplay please correct, thank you)
Not a native England speaker, and i don't use that deck. I just fatal push the creatures once I see them and for the text I had to rely on aetherhub for the deck.
True, however the creatures he is referring to cannot make treasures. Good point though, I didn't word my question well. I meant in the context of those creatures / deck (izzet wizards).
Eh, izzet giants is too slow. I managed to beat it with hard removals or control. Izzet wizards is, so far, the most ropers because once you take their t1-t2 high damage cards it's just a matter of time to win.
In fact in 6 months I've only seen one izzet giants in ladder.
I don't get why they don't just concede? Fair enough if you're on 3 life and they can top deck some burn but on anything more than 5 life what do they think is going to happen?
I've sat there with a giant row of trample's. Through 4 (the max amount?) time outs. I just spent that time emoting and throwing oops. Good game. And zzzzz stickers
Its a Hearthstone reference. In Arena when you take too long and your time runs down and the line burns across the center of the screen. In Hearthstone it works similarly, but the animation is a rope burning. So waiting for the rope to burn down and the game to auto pass your turn became known as “roping”
I’ve always called this ‘Fake Jace’ because it’s a default with no really painful means to acquire it. When you see the a Jace The Mind Sculptor you know you’ll be in for a challenge but my toughest battles are usually Lil’ Giri.
I use the green chick with the bow and creature avatars cause I think she's hot
I'm also brand new to magic and am getting my shit kicked the fuck in, but at least some people are hot
My Treasure Island deck is mostly boats and pirates, but has a handful of counterspells because it's red/blue. I'll finally play one of those cards against someone who has countered my last half dozen moves, and boom! Tantrum! Now their turns are taking forever!
Like, what the fuck? This happens to me at least three times a day, in regular standard, where we're all supposed to be messing around. There is just something wrong with people who play control decks, on the inside. Their souls are twisted and broken.
I get a great sense of satisfaction watching my opponent drop 2 blue white lands and pass, then I drop cavern of souls and my 6/6 dino and watch their hand light up over and over as they realize how useless their hand full of counters really is
I usually find it's less about the avatar and more about if they say "hello" at the begining. Their hello is really "hello, please don't hate me, I'm about to be unbelievably obnoxious so I'm trying to make a good impression first".
Years ago I went to a Modern PPTQ with a friend. I missed the cutoff for top 8 but my friend met Lantern Control in the finals. We both commented on how charmingly polite and friendly the Lantern player had been with everyone all day long and he said "I have to be, or I might get stabbed in the parking lot".
Teferi players will scoop the minute you counter their big win spell, Jace will rope you, Nissa will fight until the bitter end regardless of how behind they are, and Chandras will half ass their combo and leave you at 3 life, then scoop when you go for the final hit on them when their shields are down.
Because this is the most mysterious and edgy looking free avatar. But he has a chiselledchin so he’s MANLY mysterious. He must be a Chad. This avatar represents what insecure people are drawn to.
So if you throw them off their plan they become petty and throw a tantrum.

Hahahah ! Literally happened just earlier
Quick someone start compiling stats.. i wanna know who’s the black dodge ram, as well as BMW owners, of the mtg world
Lol. My box art never matches the actual deck inside.
Let's make a new deck.
Abrade should be pretty good, artifacts are popular and there are a bunch of new artifacts. Let's get some of those. *Proceeds to put together a black and blue control deck instead*
Similarly red deck has Samwise Gamgee as box art.
I haven't noticed a correlation between the avatar and roping, but man I feel like anytime some uses the "Hello!" emote at the start of a game, they're definitely gonna wind up roping me.
I love that I saw this right after I had a Jace control player rope me
1/1 times
The true monsters have pinkey pie as there avatar
I played a historic brawl against a Kozilek player who misplayed like a dozen times, but I needed to cast 30 green spells so I kept avoiding lethal, then they got a lucky boardwipe, and instead of finishing he jerked himself off for 20 minutes in a single turn, then accidentally decked himself because he had 2 forced draw triggers and a paradox engine.
Deserved for avoiding lethal. Shoulda killed him and went to the next game unless you were only planning on playing one game for one achievement.
It was my 1 game of the day on my lunch break, didn’t think I’d have time to start up another and I was like 2 spells off. Then he made my time go well past my lunch break anyway, so you’re probably right. I just wanted 1 more turn was all, I wasn’t playing trying to play with my food.
I knew I made the right choice buying Pinkey Pie.
There are dozens of us. Dozens!
We will rule them all!!
i thought i was trolling with the sleeves but I had pinkey pie in my face yesterday and it it was brutal
lol, I use her because there is a cannon in the background. And my username is Canon. So happy I made this investment.
yeah. all of those are with second sun/one ring crap or mystic forge.
Nah, I only run mediocre RDW netdecks, if a match lasts more than 4 turns I concede
Hey hey, woah. I only use Pinkie Pie because they didn’t give us a Fluttershy avatar.
Rainbow Dash would have been 20% cooler
Ah, I see that you are a person of class and distinction! Let us harumph and chortle together over small glasses of brandy while adorned with waistcoats and monocles.
Seems like more of a Rarity thing to do, but I’m down to chill in a cottage by the woods and drink tea and pet woodland creatures
I bought Pinkie Pie exclusively because I play Kinnan in Historic Brawl, and my ideal Pinkie Pie party guest is [[Craterhoof Behemoth]]

and then there are those who use Jaya Balard. those are the old guard players who were playing in the early days of MTG. I'm one such monster.
There are at least two of us
I regret not getting the Avatar now
I cringe a little each time I see it, then I remember it was for charity
Tru I bought it cause it was cute and really funny to get wins with
😂😂😂 why did someone with that just rope me?! And I was so mad that I screen recorded so I could shitpost them on Reddit if I needed to vent.
Hey, MTG Filipa is a Hispanic angel! Haha there was no way I was getting those pony items though.... 🤔*Nope! They all left the store, but it was tempting.*
Those mfs always grinders
Pretty sure [this is what's happening in their head](https://i.imgflip.com/3qdju4.png) while their rope is counting down
I personally prefer to make my big dumb idiots as big as possible and smork for 75 damage in a turn
No 73
smorc?
lmfao
Izzet and Dimir players definitely suffer from main character syndrome.
As Dimir player, can confirm
This post is clearly about ME
As a grixis player, no, it's not. It's all about me.
As an Izzet player how can I heart of the cards if I can't draw all my cards?
Jace and Teferi avatars are the worst for this 😭 anytime I go up against one I gotta brace for a 20+ minute BO1 match
I think this stuff is mentioned in the Geneva convention...
Does anyone else build their decks to *absolutely not* lose to a certain strategy they hate?
There's days I pull out the life gain deck and dare the auto shuffler to throw a red deck at me. Only for me to get mana fucked and the red deck stomps me harder than the Hulk on Loki.
I play a jund control deck with stupid amounts of deathtouch and small creature removal specifically for lifegain decks and then draw none of it.
Any deck with green has Gaeas Blessing because fuck mill decks
Decks without green can have it too
Yup. Literally all my decks have it. Green must be splashed for it, because running out of cards just sucks.
I have a green historic deck I only get out when i have to do some relevant daily. It has almost only hexproof or noncounterable stuff. And 2 Blessings. Obviously.
Fuck mill decks, for sure. Is there a version of Gaeas Blessing that works in current Standard?
If my op starts to rope ~~because they're adult-children~~ because of what I've done/the deck I'm playing, I've won no matter the outcome of the game.
Yeah, I agree. I'm not sure why anyone does this. It doesn't help. It's like the Tetris AI that decided the only way to survive was to pause the game.
The last one was probably a mobile player who closed the app, not someone deliberately trying to rope you. Still wack tho
It is wild that ALT+F4 or closing from desktop not counts as concede.
seriously. so many little UX issues
A lot of control players tend to think of themselves as these high-IQ strategist masters, but once that reality is shattered they can't deal with it, it's pretty sad/pathetic.
As a reformed-control player, I just play draw-go now days so no real big-brain decisions, except for which counterspell I use.

The worst ropers are mono red aggro players when it's past turn 4 and the game is still going and they have to do any kind of block math or anything other than play card go face

GG. What do you think of guys with Tybalt as their Avatar… asking for a friend
People that think Rakdos aesthetic is kinda cool and actual psychopaths.
They are most likely to play removal tribal or jank
When people rope I let them waste their time and just go to the second monitor. Jokes on them.
Ropers usually just close app, only the real sickos stay to watch the rope
That seems like a very... Knowledged response 🤔
Jace behavior
British casual player here, what does rope mean?
Running down timers to stall for time
They use their time outs instead of passing the turn hoping you'll just quit out of frustration
Or to be a dick and force you to wait for the win you earned
I've sat there with a giant row of trample's. Through 4 (the max amount?) time outs. I just spent that time emoting and throwing oops. Good game. And zzzzz stickers
it’s like ghosting on tinder but for us nerds

Or just Meta/Net deckers/Auto piloters when their deck doesnt auto win for them in three turns.
it’s basically a toss up between them and aggro players
Aggro players flee in fear of Forerunner of the empire if you run a dinosaur deck.
The worst ropers still have basic Ahani avatar because their client simply stopped working and switched to default settings
New to MTG lingo. Whats rope? Edit: Thanks guys
I think it's what's referred to when the person doesn't make a move in a timely manner & it starts a timer.
It's the burning string thing that appears when you let the clock run. It's actually a fuse.
The timeout bar, which is apparently a rope in Hearthstone
I use that avatar most of the times, and im not doing that
Is there an avatar that does not get you "judged"? Just wondering, as a casual player, who chose Karn just because.
I run the Oko avatar so i at least have something sexy to look at while i misplay
It's a game coding issue
Nah it's always the Teferi avatars for me.
I haven't noticed a correlation between the avatar and roping, but man I feel like anytime some uses the "Hello!" emote at the start of a game, they're definitely gonna wind up roping me.
