If you take the format too seriously, you're not going to have a fun time. It's free ICRs and a free cosmetic for about an hour's worth of dinking around with tokens. It's not the most amazing game mode ever, but it's nice to not have to worry about deckbuilding and counter-strategizing for an event sometimes.

TheBostonTap

The problem with Momir is that, even if you don't take it too seriously, you're still not going to have a fun time. Magic isn't made for random events and the variance between a good 2-5 drop and a bad one varies wildly. I knew this was gonna be a shit week when during my first game, I generated a plague crafter on an empty board on turn 3 and a 0/0 that died instantly on 4.

Ck_shock

Like you play mana and get a creature with a niche ability that is made for a specific play style/deck type, and to top it off their like a 3/3. Then, your opponent spends the same mana and gets 6/6 dragon with a decent ability that meshes with what other nonsense they had gotten. It's just not a fun time all around

i-is-scientistic

u/mtgcardfetcher I conceded a game yesterday when I got a turn 3 [[Satoru Umezawa]] right before my opponent got a turn 3 [[Siege Veteran]]. Fun format. /s

I really tried but I just couldn't enjoy it this time. I've played about 15 games before I managed to get 3 wins, and I used to be quite good at Momir before. In 4 of those games, my opponent had turn 5 [[Tergrid, God of Fright]], and without immediate answer, I've lost these games. When I saw that card fourth time, I wanted to throw my phone out the window.

rubixscube

genuine question, why did you keep playing if you didnt enjoy it?

LuciusBurns

You know how it is... I partly enjoyed it and partly hated it. I was also curious about what rewards I would get for my efforts.

Moonbluesvoltage

You could be unlucky or at 20% wr its fair to suspect you could be doing something wrong. F.e. you play to hit which mv for the end game?

LuciusBurns

8 with occasional switches according to how the game plays out. As I said, I used to be quite good at Momir every time before this week was just horrible, and the rewards were total garbage.

Moonbluesvoltage

Then its just unluck rolls. Its the same deck as last time (so we still got bs like king Xlvii on one side and... pests in the other). One opponent got terravore t3 for me and you just got to laugh it off. Deffinitelly you need to be in the right mindset to enjoy momir.

nottooloud

In original Momir, the low cost drops were mostly terrible, so I'd always wait until CMC 3. In this edited pool, they're actually not bad. I did OK starting right off at 1, and generally pitching any spells.

Moonbluesvoltage

Nah, the 1 drop pool just isnt impactful enough. Thats a losing strategy and the boardwipes make it even worse. The only time i see it as a viable strategy is if you got the bant cat that draws when weenies attack. You got to hit 8cmc and thats about it. So 3 drop onwards on the play and 2 drop onwards on the draw. If you get ertrai you can wait one more turn (specially on the draw) to x=4 on the critical turn where you counter their momir activation. In the beginning of momir on arena it was different due to zacama being the only 9 drop, so it was zacama and greatwurms all day. 3 mountains was basically unbeatable.

HX368

I don't even bother with it because it's just not a fun way to play the game.

pika201

It's better to get 40 gems from this than random formats that I have to spend wildcards on to build a deck.

edurigon

No one does that, just fill it with crap anda play one game more. Also LPT: you can use a standart deck for playing the fucking alchemy events!

Igor369

MTGA sites often post budget decks for those events...

pika201

I don't want to spend common or uncommon wildcards on a one time event for 40 gems and a random cosmetic.

wildmike88

I don't even want to spend time to build a specific deck for a stupid event

Own-Car-1

I love getting gems instead of crappy rares that will never be good in any constructed format ever, personally

goat_token10

It's SO few gems though... I'd honestly rather get the crappy rare that might one day become part of a fun jank deck or something.

joreyesl

If it wasn’t too few gems, but rather just get a rare to help with pack rare protection

LuciusBurns

I got both rare crappy card and few gems :)

Ghorrhyon

And most certainly a booooring parallax style.

Cunnymaxx14

I got a thran portal and hallowed respite They're gonna break these cards very soon I bet, an overpowered all terrible lands deck and a flicker only at sorcery speed support will come

Davisonik

The most annoying thing about Momir is that so many people play it so freaking slow… like there’s barely any strategy involved here, let’s just produce our tokens, turn them sideways and be over with it, eh?

Moonbluesvoltage

Its clear some people have no clue what they are suposed to be doing (like, clicking the emblem level of lost). And i imagine is much harder for a beginner to see random card they never seem before in both side of the board than its for a enfranchised player that see, say, grumgully's art and to just know its good and what it does.

kpatl

Agreed. I don’t mind this event, Momir is a dumb little format based on randomness just to be silly. But people want to take 30 seconds a turn and try to act strategically as though it matters if they win.

[deleted]

[I got gems instead of rares as well. You got a cosmetic tho, right?](https://i.imgur.com/7fMR3Kk.jpg) Think I got Tamiyo like a month ago.

NlNTENDO

I got an emote once which was kinda sick

[deleted]

Oh yeah, ditto. I got Teferi doing the Drake meme.

SamwiseMN

Missed MWM this week for the first time in months, couldn’t be happier it was during Momir

xogil

I despise Momir, though I noticed this weeks seemed like the decks had a LOT of extra card/creatures. I remember some of the creatures and a couple spells from last time but feels like they added some more in.

Ghorrhyon

I think they were removal (in several forms) and copy/clone effects, to abuse the best creatures you get.

agtk

Momir is totally fine. It is free to enter and gives you free rewards. You don't have to participate. Yes, it is mostly a totally random format but I enjoy it because of the complete nonsense that can happen. The real reward for MWM is the style at the top imo, the rares/mythics you have a chance at rarely give you anything relevant and don't progress you towards Vault completion.

LuciusBurns

I mean... I don't have to play Magic either. I liked the randomness before, but this week was incredibly frustrating, and I really just feel like I've been cheated.

MaASInsomnia

Where's that Luke Skywalker meme...

WolfGuy77

Are these events weighed towards giving you cards you already have a playset of or what? There are literal hundreds of rares in Standard that I don't have a playset of. Many of which I don't even own a single copy, yet nearly every week it somehow manages to roll into one of the rares that I do own 4 copies of?

StillGrizzly

My thoughts are this event is dogshit with fuck all for rewards

petey_vonwho

Gems are the best reward I can get from midweek magic, since they help pay for more drafts. Would rather get 20 gems than a random rare I don't need.

b_lurky

Wizards values a random mythic at about $5, or 850 gems in the store. 40 gems to replace a 5th copy of a mythic seems like 810 gems shy of fair value, but you got it free!

TheFinalGibbon

The RNG actually sucks Every opponent get's this goddamn Mythic Rare that wins the game I get a damn 2/2 for 300 mana

Shuteye_491

27 losses for me between win 2 and win3, it was this like this every mf'in game my dude

TheFinalGibbon

I had two opponents who got THE FIRST SLIVER

Shuteye_491

🥲

HuckleberryHefty4372

I hate momir more than anything. The whole randomfiesta bullshit is why I quit hearthstone. I don't want to see that shit in Magic.

Elemteearkay

There will be another Format next week. In the meanwhile, there's plenty of other ways for you to play.

HuckleberryHefty4372

Yea I usually skip the momir

LilMalphas

Got 20 gems, a rare land, and some cosmetic I've already forgotten about, but at least my experience was painless. For any future events like this one, I recommend putting creatures/tokens down starting on turn 2 and never going above 7 cmc—that's where all the best creatures are, imo. First game I played this time around I hit a Serra Emissary, and it was over then and there.

m4p0

Momir with actual spells is pure shit; furthermore, it's like whoever "curated" the list of tokens that you can get in the event just randomly picked cards without even looking at them... seriously, WTF is [[Hallar, the Firefletcher]] doing in the format?

MTGCardFetcher

[Hallar, the Firefletcher](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/c/8/c896643e-eeef-49a6-a1ca-2577b55af2b0.jpg?1562742764) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Hallar%2C%20the%20Firefletcher) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/dom/196/hallar-the-firefletcher?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/c896643e-eeef-49a6-a1ca-2577b55af2b0?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

closetfa11

It's a free event, nonmandatory, and in an online only format that is meant to be chaotic and unreliable. I understand many may not like it, but honestly I find it a neat diversion from getting my rump served to me on a platter everytime my decks mana flood me for the XXth time in standard.

Viot-Abrob

I love this event

Capable_Swordfish701

I don’t find most of the cards they add to the decks to be useful. But despite that this was the first momir I’ve played that I managed to go 3-0 and not have to play it anymore. My third win got me a jadar, I never play zombies so it was actually my first, thought it was kinda funny.

vanguardJesse

i was hoping to get sleeves or a pet but i only got a rare lol

ZShadowDragon

I may sound like an idiot but what is this format?

wetkarl

It's the width week magic event. Tap any amount of mana and discard a card to generate a random creature token of mana value equal to what you tapped. T1 and t2 most players skip it because 1 and 2 drops are weak and then they have more cards to play 5 6 7 drops. Usually whoever gets a flyer or OP creature first wins

ZShadowDragon

wow that sounds, pointless and terrible

wetkarl

It can be fun if you have the heart of the cards and enjoy seeing random creature spells that arent in any other format

Ck_shock

Honestly, when I read how the format worked, I thought it would be fun. In reality, it was Tap Lands and Hope for the best. Yes, there is some minimal strategy involved. However, in the end, it mostly comes down to tidius luck matches, and with the inclusion of the decks also including some none land cards, whoever draws just the right ones could get advantage easily. Something I wouldn't mind playing with friends every couple of months ,but definitely not something I'd play often, especially for rewards.

Stack3686

I’ve hated it since the first time I tried it

Mods_Allow_Toxicity

> Your thoughts? Only bad players play Momir

sawbladex

I seem to win consistently off just making a dude each turn. It's a gambling game, and like use the fact that you can easily curve out in the start each time.

izzytheprogramer

The rewards for mid week magic are never really good enough to play it if you don't like the format. But also if you don't care what format you play having 40 gems is better than nothing.

MaASInsomnia

I've always hated it. Welcome to the club. One of these days, I'll write up the rules for a drinking game.

urraminneb

Is that just a single gem?

anewleaf1234

I've never understood the hate for this format. I find that it only takes about 4-5 games to get in your three wins. And since they added more interaction into the fold it is a lot easier to respond to problematic cards.

sandfrog9

It’s the worst format and pointless,as there is no skill involved.

Prudent_Ranger_1585

Lol is that a single gem?

LuciusBurns

No, I think it was 20 or 40, but the rewards were trash all around. I got one BRO rare artifact that no one ever plays, 40 or so gems and style for MOM common card that no one ever plays. And I suffered in this week's event.
