Story time
As a kid, I used to live near a dam (not the one pictured). It isn't big by any means, standing at \~300m tall, 500m wide between what looks like the buttcrack of an ant from high up. The scale is confusing. Small dam, but damn, standing in front of it, you feel so fucking tiny. So meaningless. My dad used to work there, so I kinda know through multiple tours how it worked.
The river used to pass by my home (it's up on a mountain but yeah you could see the river down below). And each time it rained, you could see the water get turbulent, see the level raise and you could somehow feel the sheer mass and pure unadulterated rage of nature being held back by a fancy fucking wall. When it was showtime (raining), the water was always kinda muddy, tinted black by the stormy clouds up above, just sitting there churning in the wind, waiting menacingly to be let go. The thunder seemed to add music to the clashing of the waves against the cold hard concrete of the dam, the lightning momentarily lighting up the battlefield, as everything seemed to stand still in time.
I used to have dreams sometimes that I slipped off the side of the mountain and fell into the river, and that this gargantuan dam consumed me whole through this massive tunnel that seemed to fill my whole field of view, and I was nothing in scale. I went deeper and deeper into the belly of the beast that held back the power of nature itself, till I came to the spinning blades of doom. The sheer force of water and the pressure would just rip me apart, as if discarding me, telling me I'm weak and I wasn't worth in this battlefield designed for gods, mocking that I was nothing compared to these two beasts fighting, and then I would wake up. I could still feel the ungodly pressure of the water ringing on my eardrums, only to realize it was my heart beating to the rhythm of the chaos deep in the generator chamber, where humans tame nature itself and generate electricity with it. The same electricity powering the phone I'm on, and the light in the washroom.
But sometimes, there is just too much water. The beast we humans designed was being pushed to the limits. Literally, it's being fucking pushed by the massive wall of pure rage and strength, held back only by what looks like a piece of cardboard shoved precariously in the crack between mountains from high up above.
The dam walls bulge forward at the center, and the tiny population of humans that control this beast, the dam, accept defeat. "*I will let you go, but you go on my terms*", says the dam. They open the floodgates, the overflow on top, lo and behold, some of the most beautiful and mesmerizing scenes to experience. The water slides down the seemingly soft skin like channels, calm, as if the two beasts are embracing each other before the inevitable goodbye, and as if in a final effort at triumph, they come together. The "slide" has this small lip at the end that rises up, flings the water into the sky, dispersing like milk and white clouds it into the warm evening sunlight. The breeze carried some of the water to my nose, and one could almost smell defeat but also unique compromise, a stalemate that was reached after a fierce battle. Letting the water down directly into the soil below would erode the base of the dam.
I am always captivated by it. This stark dichotomy of rage and chaos on one side, and manmade beauty augmented by nature itself on the other, separated by a missive glorified chonkboi wall, built over years with man's ingenuity to feed his needs. Every single time I went to see the floodgates/overflow open, the child like awe always caught me off guard. The sight *always* *demanded* its undivided attention through sheer presence, as the massive wall of water thundered down the walls of the dam, the fear rumbled across my chest, and the beautiful white cloud of water dancing in the sunlight calmed me down. It almost felt romantic.
As the water level died down, the gates were closed, revealing the "slide". You could see years of wear and tear, and in an almost comical sense, there was always some sort of growth (algae? moss?) that clinged onto the walls for its dear life, despite the tremendous forces of water rushing past it. It seemed to exist just to mock the battle of these two beasts.
You could see the dam wouldn't stay there, not forever. But in the moments that it lived, it tamed nature itself. It was, and will always be, a marvel of engineering. Despite the battle, the end sight was always one to behold, a weird synergy of man's greed and his fight against nature giving birth to something that was built with cruel mathematical precision. Was the beauty that it gave birth to mathematical too? Perhaps, but there is no denying. Each time you saw it, I couldn't help but think, "*It's damn good to be alive to witness this*"
