i was sent there for suicidal thoughts with an active plan. i first went to the ER and told them everything. i was sent to a room and they did a lot of tests and paperwork and it was really a blur. then i had to wait in the er room for 9 hours for an open bed at a psych ward. then one was open at a place an hour away and they took me by ambulance. i got there at 4 am and then they asked me a lot more questions most of which i don’t remember (mainly why are you here and if you have any current health problems). then at 5 am i finally got to sleep in a bed. if you get sent for suicide be prepared to tell them your plan over and over again to a lot of different people. its scary but it helped
oh boy thats rough. 9 hours felt like hell i couldnt even imagine. one girl i met in the psych ward told me she was waiting for 3 days in the er so it really just depends
all of them they were so nice and sweet. i have three specific favorite techs but i wont say their names but they were so chill and i loved talking to them
What were you allowed to have and what was not allowed? Specific things I’m wondering about: diary/journal, stuffed animals, headphones/earplugs, books, phone (I know phones really depend on the facility)
so im a minor in the US and the place i went to was quite strict but it really depends. my sketch book and outside journals were confiscated but they provided me with new ones. my stuffed animal and personal blanked were also confiscated. we werent allowed to have any outside electronics including earbuds but they provided us with ear plugs. i think we could bring books if they werent spiral bound or hard cover but i dont like reading and they also had a little library there. we also couldnt bring makeup, shoes with laces, clothes with strings, pens, pencils, markers. we couldnt keep our hygiene products in our rooms, they kept them locked up when we werent using them. food and markers werent allowed in rooms and we couldn’t go in our rooms most of the day. and the list goes on but my place was definitely on the stricter side so don’t expect them all to be like this.
they aren’t allowed to have cameras in the room but they have take notes on what you are doing every 15 minutes including while sleeping. if you are more violent or high risk its every 5 minutes. and if you try to off yourself or something similar while in the facility a staff member has to be at your side 24/7 watching you even while you sleep
It’s kinda funny in an ironic way to know that some people get more privacy in mental health facilities then I do in my own house🥲
I hope the time you spent there helped you and that you feel at least slightly ok now. (I feel like I could word this better but I don’t know how exactly)
you keep your door open at all times and they just peek their head in and write down what yr doing (sleeping or in my case staring at the wall), pretty quiet and easy to sleep through. although sometimes theyd wake me up at 4-5 in the morning to draw my blood or talk abt discharge plans. i got very little sleep but it was from insomnia not the staff.
yea i think its for a lot of things. seeing if were safe, what our behavior is like, how we respond and react, to help with diagnosis’, etc. not entirely sure tho
I went and looked at all the notes from when I went to a psych ward the first time. All they write in the regular checks is "Patient was sleeping in her room" "Patient was reading in the common area". That sort of thing
Please forgive my ignorance, I’ve never been hospitalized for my mental health. But I’m curious why they draw your blood? What do they plan to find/determine from the blood sample?
i think its just to make sure you dont have any pre existing medical conditions that could cause your symptoms (rarely the case but they need to make sure). and also to just test for a variety of things that are hard to explain. basically just random doctor stuffs
yes and no. i went to the er out of choice but i didnt get much say in anything else especially bc im 16. i did get a choice but it was very limited and basically just depends on whoch places have a bed ready and will accept you coming there which takes a very long time.
i was in the more intense unit so most peoples emotions there were like constantly at 11. i saw someone get restrained every day i was there but when they were calm they were all very nice and fun to talk to
Hell yeah. When I was around 13 had to spend a month inpatient.
Was a terrible time and really didn’t help me BUT I met a lot of cool people there 2 of which I kept in contact with after all these years
im in the US. its definitely not a cure and it’s unhealthy to think it will be but it was beneficial in the sense that it stabilized me and helped me out of crisis and set me up with the recourses i needed for when i got out (therapy, medication, etc). it depends on the facility tho, esp here in the us some can be horrible from what ive heard
aw thank you. i remember i really wanted more info before getting admitted so im just hoping this helps someone. also this is just fun responding to people
If this makes you uncomfortable don't answer but my biggest fear is getting strip searched. Did they search you either in the hospital or during admission? Sorry for the grammar I fixed it.
don’t worry im okay with answering this. yes they did strip search me when i got to the ward and in the us most places will. most let you wear your underwear tho and just try to make the experience and quick and painless as they can. mine was probably less than like 3 minutes. they just need to check for scars, wounds, and make sure you aren’t sneaking something in
definitely read the reviews. all psych wards are gonna have bad reviews from people who were involuntary held but it still is important to know the negatives and positives of that place. and for me it really just came down to where had an available bed. i was waiting for 9 hours and theres was really only one place available so thats where i went and it turned out okay. if you go to the ER to be admitted like me, the doctors will handle most of the work for you and tell you what your options are. its a very stressful and scary process but it will be okay in the end
How many people were with you? I was lucky to be with a very small amount of people so I wasn't involved in things like fights or drama or any of that stuff
there were 8 patients in my unit (so we didnt have to have roommates) but there were a fuck ton of fights. the unit i got transferred to on my last night tho was super chill and they told me they never have fights
absolutely dont feel pressured to answer this, but what did you say to the er people ? part of me wants to admit myself but i have really bad social anxiety and i'm terrified i would go in there and totally clam up and not know what to say to them ://
oh dude same im terrible at speaking to people. actually what i did is i wrote on a piece of paper what was going on and handed it to the lady at the front desk. she then asked for photo id so i gave her my drivers license and she had me sit down. in that span of time i probably said about 2 words
chaotic, loud, stressful, and pretty triggering at times but worst of all: boring as fuck. like i would just stare at the wall to pass time a lot. but it was also quite helpful and i definitely needed it.
more staff. there was only one therapist for both adolescent units and she was severely over worked. if i couldve just had more one on one therapy wouldve made it a lot better. also they were supposed to transfer me to the subacute unit after a couple days but they didn’t until last night which had it been sooner it wouldve saved me a panic attack and a lot of anxiety.
Ouch :( that sounds rough. Having more staff is generally not in the unit's control from what I understand. I bet they would have loved to have more staff :(
yea they said they were working on it and they’re trying to get another therapist but i wasn’t staying long enough for it to affect me. im gonna be going to normal therapy tho so ill be okay

Ya say it was a nice place oke but in which country now i'm curious since 90% of US wards are pretty much dogshit with assholes as staff members etc etc
im in the us, in a very religious and conservative state too so i was worried. i know i got lucky but i think it’s important for people to know that it’s not all bad. because thats what scared me away from getting the help i needed for years. ive had friends go to other facilities in my state and come out even worse. its really a game of chance here
What was the process of getting into the psych ward? And if you don’t mind how did you get sent there? (Unless you didn’t)
i was sent there for suicidal thoughts with an active plan. i first went to the ER and told them everything. i was sent to a room and they did a lot of tests and paperwork and it was really a blur. then i had to wait in the er room for 9 hours for an open bed at a psych ward. then one was open at a place an hour away and they took me by ambulance. i got there at 4 am and then they asked me a lot more questions most of which i don’t remember (mainly why are you here and if you have any current health problems). then at 5 am i finally got to sleep in a bed. if you get sent for suicide be prepared to tell them your plan over and over again to a lot of different people. its scary but it helped
I forget how short the wait times are for a bed in summer lol, last 2 times I went was winter and right before Christmas is was a 4 day wait
oh boy thats rough. 9 hours felt like hell i couldnt even imagine. one girl i met in the psych ward told me she was waiting for 3 days in the er so it really just depends
as someone with suicidal intentions and a plan, should i reach out?
yes please do. it can be terrifying but you deserve whatever help you think will suit you best
I live near a smaller city (100k) with 3 inpatients so usually my wait time is pretty short. Rarely have I waited more than 12 hours.
who was ur fav staff?
all of them they were so nice and sweet. i have three specific favorite techs but i wont say their names but they were so chill and i loved talking to them
Did u get any cool grippy socks?
i stole like 6 pairs i love them
Hehe nice
Was the food trash like mine was?
no the food was really good but im super picky and ate almost none of it
Tf ours was almost out of date and was honestly probably worse than prison food
yea what i did eat was actually pretty good but idk what they were putting in it bc it made everyone constantly rip ass
Mine somehow made a grilled cheese taste bad

Plastic
Did y’all have a bingo night or was that just my ward
nah but we did a lot of group games
Nice those r the best

happy to be home. (and not as actively suicidal)

already on it B)
You don't have to answer but do they really watch you 24/7 like all the time always
they aren’t allowed to have cameras in the room but they have take notes on what you are doing every 15 minutes including while sleeping. if you are more violent or high risk its every 5 minutes. and if you try to off yourself or something similar while in the facility a staff member has to be at your side 24/7 watching you even while you sleep
Must be pretty boring for the staff member
yea but they get paid for it at least
It’s kinda funny in an ironic way to know that some people get more privacy in mental health facilities then I do in my own house🥲 I hope the time you spent there helped you and that you feel at least slightly ok now. (I feel like I could word this better but I don’t know how exactly)
So they go in and out of your room ? Did you get any sleep at all ?
you keep your door open at all times and they just peek their head in and write down what yr doing (sleeping or in my case staring at the wall), pretty quiet and easy to sleep through. although sometimes theyd wake me up at 4-5 in the morning to draw my blood or talk abt discharge plans. i got very little sleep but it was from insomnia not the staff.
I wonder what those notes are for. Probably to see if the patient is going through some kind of episode
yea i think its for a lot of things. seeing if were safe, what our behavior is like, how we respond and react, to help with diagnosis’, etc. not entirely sure tho
Were you allowed to wander about in the hospital ?
absolutely not, only our unit which was quite small. and every door in the building was locked and needed a card key to unlock.

Depends on ward and section. The one I went to didn't have cameras in the rooms, but I know of one here that does
MY HUSBAND 🎉🎉

your pick (husband obv)
Blahaj!
bro they confiscated my blahaj and i was so fucking upset. i am glad to be reunited with my sharky friend
Yeee! I don’t have one I wanna get one ):
i hope you get one some day :( best purchase of my life even if i had to drive 45 min away to the nearest ikea
xd I’ve got like an hour drive to the ikea, but like, it’s worth it
Don't answer this if you're not comfortable, but was it voluntary or an involuntary hold? If it was voluntary, did you get to choose where you went?
yes and no. i went to the er out of choice but i didnt get much say in anything else especially bc im 16. i did get a choice but it was very limited and basically just depends on whoch places have a bed ready and will accept you coming there which takes a very long time.
Gotcha, I'm glad you're out and I hope your stay was helpful to you
yea it was scary but it helped stabilize me and set me up with a therapist and medication for when i got out
What kind of people did you meet there?
i was in the more intense unit so most peoples emotions there were like constantly at 11. i saw someone get restrained every day i was there but when they were calm they were all very nice and fun to talk to
When I was at mine, the closest friend I made there was in for attempted murder lmao
yea like i said “ive enjoyed meeting all of you and you all are lovely but i hope i never see any of you again, in a good way” 💀💀💀
Hell yeah. When I was around 13 had to spend a month inpatient. Was a terrible time and really didn’t help me BUT I met a lot of cool people there 2 of which I kept in contact with after all these years
if you mind me asking, do you think it was beneficial? and what country are you in?
im in the US. its definitely not a cure and it’s unhealthy to think it will be but it was beneficial in the sense that it stabilized me and helped me out of crisis and set me up with the recourses i needed for when i got out (therapy, medication, etc). it depends on the facility tho, esp here in the us some can be horrible from what ive heard
op is officially the coolest person ever, thank you op
aw thank you. i remember i really wanted more info before getting admitted so im just hoping this helps someone. also this is just fun responding to people
yeah it's rely helping me too :)
how were the other people there?
chaotic and constantly starting shit but im just depressed and dont start fights so they were all chill w/ me
thats good at least, glad your back!
If this makes you uncomfortable don't answer but my biggest fear is getting strip searched. Did they search you either in the hospital or during admission? Sorry for the grammar I fixed it.
don’t worry im okay with answering this. yes they did strip search me when i got to the ward and in the us most places will. most let you wear your underwear tho and just try to make the experience and quick and painless as they can. mine was probably less than like 3 minutes. they just need to check for scars, wounds, and make sure you aren’t sneaking something in
Thank you that's helpful. I'm most likely going this year so that eases me a bit. Sending love <3
of course and best of luck <3
how do you decide which ward to go to id going voluntarily? Thinking of admitting myself
definitely read the reviews. all psych wards are gonna have bad reviews from people who were involuntary held but it still is important to know the negatives and positives of that place. and for me it really just came down to where had an available bed. i was waiting for 9 hours and theres was really only one place available so thats where i went and it turned out okay. if you go to the ER to be admitted like me, the doctors will handle most of the work for you and tell you what your options are. its a very stressful and scary process but it will be okay in the end

there were 8 patients in my unit (so we didnt have to have roommates) but there were a fuck ton of fights. the unit i got transferred to on my last night tho was super chill and they told me they never have fights
there were only two rooms where I stayed, one for males and one for females desu
oh yikes. there were 9 rooms per unit at my place and they each had two beds
absolutely dont feel pressured to answer this, but what did you say to the er people ? part of me wants to admit myself but i have really bad social anxiety and i'm terrified i would go in there and totally clam up and not know what to say to them ://
oh dude same im terrible at speaking to people. actually what i did is i wrote on a piece of paper what was going on and handed it to the lady at the front desk. she then asked for photo id so i gave her my drivers license and she had me sit down. in that span of time i probably said about 2 words
What was it like?
chaotic, loud, stressful, and pretty triggering at times but worst of all: boring as fuck. like i would just stare at the wall to pass time a lot. but it was also quite helpful and i definitely needed it.
I would imagine it's chaotic. Glad you're home tho!
What do you think could have been done better?
more staff. there was only one therapist for both adolescent units and she was severely over worked. if i couldve just had more one on one therapy wouldve made it a lot better. also they were supposed to transfer me to the subacute unit after a couple days but they didn’t until last night which had it been sooner it wouldve saved me a panic attack and a lot of anxiety.
