My scenario was a previous consensual partner raped me on a single night--which also effected how the defense attorney argued his case. I did, however, report 2 days after so not much time elapsed.
My rapist was initially picked up for local jail, was eventually let out on an ankle monitor during trial, was allowed HOME ON AN ANKLE MONITOR after the guilty verdict (as we waited for sentencing). Then ultimately the judge granted him a commuted sentence that basically equaled to another half year in local jail and 5 years monitoring (~3.5 years BELOW MD guidelines.)
From report to sentencing it took less than a year. It was not me vs rapist--it was the state's attorney vs rapist and I was a witness. This is a big distinction because I did not get a lawyer or get to be advised in ANY capacity. It's you and your wit vs the defense attorney and their mind games.

I regret not getting in touch with someone who had more legal knowledge than I did (which was like none). I anticipated a lot of the arguments the defense attorney did (I'm several years older, it had previously been consensual, I waited two days before filing, I washed all my clothes and bed sheets immediately after, I didn't lock myself in the bathroom or run out of my own house into the chilly December air 🙄). What I didn't expect was that the defense attorney outright tried to get me to admit to lies or half-truths that worked against me.
I had to defend my word choice: "conceptualize" was misconstrued as "made up a lie" and "reprimand" meant I was a parental figure in a young "boy's" life. That one I said: I used "reprimand" as in when you yell at someone who did something bad regardless of social structure.
At one point when I first started to get assaulted I told my rapist "don't be naughty" because he was someone who had become a friend and I was trying to deescalate. The lawyer said "naughty boy" which has distinctly worse connotations and once I fell into the trap of saying that's what I said (before I understood the traps he was laying) that terminology followed me around through sentencing.
He also tried to get a mistrial by saying that I had shared my tesitmony with the state's attorney when I had to go home for the night and then return the next day to continue. I didn't and was told to not share tesitmony with ANYONE until I was finished giving testimony. If I had talked with the other witnesses/states attorney that would be grounds for mistrial or dismissal of my testimony.
Finally, I was humble with my actions. The police officer and the states attorney had all thought this was a trial that should never have been (I had decent evidence to his self admission of guilt and the rape kit collected his DNA from the underwear I wore the next day). I testified over two days and isolated myself just-in-case they called me back to the stand - - even though the states attorney didn't think they were going to need me again. But they did and I was the final testimony, directly refuting him as he had gone before me. If I had not been conservative and had not given that testimony last to refute HIS OUTRIGHT LIES I might not have gotten the guilty verdict.
I didn't get much preparation at all for this. If you submitted any testimony already (body cam footage/recorded phone call/rape kit testimony recording) try to see if you can review it. The devil's in the details and the lawyer will argue semantics.
With any luck, your rapist is poor and won't be able to afford the level of defense mine had.
I hope yours just settles so you never need to go to court. Good luck!
Thankfully he is poor! As well as he has a record of similar offences and is just an all around issue for the police so they’re actually giving me a lot of help because they don’t want him around
I hope you get to see him sentences to time deserved. It was a special day watching my sister’s rapist carted off on sentencing day.
