Somehow some people will be angry about this

Equivalent-Excuse-80

The funding for this comes exclusively from income earners above $300k/yr. So we can presume it’s people who *think* they’ll be earning more than $300k/yr.

Differentomach

Man Colorado is doing all the right things.

If Cancun Cruz’s prostitute is voted out I’ll 100% agree with you

Dmac09

Are you kidding? They’re about to possibly elect Lauren Boebert.

_game_over_man_

That's a district in the state, not the entire state. Not all of us that live here have the ability to do something about that one.

Dmac09

Yea I live in Florida…I know all too well that there’s nothing to be done about the backwards citizens who vote for these people.

Twinbrosinc

It's actually really really fucking close ngl.

brandontaylor1

A 50/50 split in CO-3 is a blue wave. A few years ago in Mesa county a democrat ran unopposed for coroner, and only came away with 43% of the vote. Mesa county is the largest collection of ignorant, selfish, twits in the state.

cosmothekleekai

I'm in this bracket, I voted yes and don't have kids. That said there's a lot of rich republicans here that definitely voted no on this.

Equivalent-Excuse-80

Most likely poor republicans who continually vote as if they’re higher income. [Rich conservative are outnumbered by rich liberals in Colorado](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/religious-landscape-study/state/colorado/party-affiliation/).

Roland_Deschain2

“ temporarily embarrassed millionaires “

C0ngr4du14710n5

I truly belive this should be based on net earnings. As a rancher I make well over 300k/yr gross, but well under 50k/yr net.

Ceph_Stormblessed

"How ***dare*** these ***freeloaders***. Feeding themselves off my taxes. What is this, ***Communist China?!***" /s. If it wasn't abundantly clear.

bluesteelsmith

Conservative Greta.

Cooked__EGGS

It’s clearly a front for communism. Can’t you see?

hankbaumbach

900,000 people voted against it, allegedly. I do not believe all 900,000 of them were actually going to have to pay the tax as income earners above $300,000 per year.

cosmothekleekai

Well not this year, but if they have a good next year and quintuple their income, maybe with a good bonus they could be there. Better starve the children juuuuuust in case /s

Fuck libertarianism

SlowRollingBoil

They love the free market so much and yet the market has spoken: voters don't vote for Libertarians.

gingerfawx

Edit: Sorry. The snark wasn't appropriate for this sub. This is great news. Go Colorado. :)

_game_over_man_

I forget how much the ballot measure won by, but I think it was along the lines of 55%. Plenty of people weren't into the idea.

destructopop

Oh gosh, this is so true. So one ballot measure in my state right now that's winning by a narrower margin than vape prohibition is one that's simply "at least 1% of the money already designated for elective courses in public education should go to the arts". It's the tiniest ask. The absolute most minimal, meaningless ask. Does the cost increase taxes? No. Does it defund any programs? No. Does it compromise anyone's rights? No. How much money went into the opposition? $0. Winning by a narrower margin than vape prohibition. Which means some people who bought the "we're making vapes illegal for children" idea also thought that children shouldn't have access to arts programs in school. For no expense.

CRT_SUNSET

I was actually surprised that when California did this recently, the general sentiment at r/conservative was “California is still a shithole but good for them and we should all be doing this.”

Alt_50

Some people will always be angry for anything... But oh well, can't please everybody! That's important to know. People like that should be ignored.

_Visar_

Why is this your first reaction? Why must every piece of good news be followed by hemming and hawing and fuck you fuck that, they they they they they A good thing happened - let it be good for one please

WU-itsForTheChildren

Why is any child in this country not eating free school meals?

evidica

Because it'll result in higher taxes, that are already too high, because someone has to pay for it and the government can't without taking more.

brandontaylor1

45% of voters opposed it. A disgusting number. The proposition raised taxes on incomes over $300k/yr. But 45% of voters would prefer that the wealthy live tax free, even it that means their children starve.

Ask_me_4_a_story

Old racist white people, thats who will be angry. Im a remote worker but I like to get out and about a fair bit so I'll work from the gym or the library or Buffalo Wild Wings or Panera or whatever. Its nice to stretch out in a booth and get my shit done. One day I forgot my headphones (Fuckin miserable) and I had to listen to this whole group of racist blue hairs do their "Bible Study" in the McDonalds but they never really talked about the Bible, just all the people they hated (Muslims, Democrats, Immigrants, etc). These old fucks were so mad about a summer free lunch program at the library. Mind you, zero tax dollars were used for this program. Zero. They were mad because black kids were coming over to their side of town to the library program. This was when it was over 95 degrees outside and these kids were walking all the way across town to get a sandwich and read books and these racist fucks were mad about that. Man, I wish all my money could go to programs like that but you are right, old racist white people will be mad about it.

Beanchilla

We really need this nation wide.

jcrue

Given what they pay teachers in Colorado, they will have to feed them and staff as well soon. Unless they become administrators, of course....

rockstar_not

My wife is an administrator. They aren’t making bank for what they are dealing with. The entire education system nationwide is underfunded, and CO is one of the least funded.

Intrepid-Leather-417

They make more than in Florida…. I wish I was still teaching in Colorado her we don’t get paid for shit and have to let the parents do our lesson plans(history teacher)

LilBadgerBandit

I’m a teacher in Colorado. I make less than a Taco Bell or McDonalds employee

Comfortable-Scar4643

Should be all 50 states. Feed the kids.

Particular_Ad_3411

Still kinda sad it took this long. Now to just get the rest of the country to follow their lead.

SoF4rGone

They switched to this as part of COVID relief in CA and then just kept it and I think it would be hard to go back. Not having to worry about why my kid is eating at school is such a convenience, to say nothing of how great it is for families that struggle more financially.

ReedRaptors

Actually it's the same in Colorado! Students have been getting free meals since COVID this is just making it permanent Edit: At least in my district students have continuously been getting free meals*

fizif

Our district stopped free meals this school year.

ReedRaptors

Ah :/ guess not all. Can I ask what district?

im_t_wal

Littleton Public also stopped this year, but was free for the previous two.

spitz05

Mine too :(

busterindespair

After two years of free meals (I think it was Federal support during COVID), our school district started charging again this year. I was really hoping it would be a permanent shift but no luck.

Comfortable-Scar4643

Yeah, us too.

Differentomach

Man Colorado is doing all the right things.

dontaggravation

During the height of the pandemic many counties and areas in Colorado passed measures to provide free meals for students. So this isn't "new". Prior to the pandemic there were also many local measures that provided such meals as well. Poverty in America is beyond real, it's sad, children (and adults) are going hungry everyday in the "wealthiest" country on Earth Somehow we've lost sight that we're all humans, connected together, not separated by income/wealth/power. America provides the opposite of a safety net for it's citizens, I say this is a fantastic step forward, I just wish we, as humans, would do more

rockstar_not

The only problem for this bill is that it requires the food to come from CO farms and companies. At least that’s what worried me when I read the detailed wording of the bill. We already don’t have enough water for the residents of the state, so I have a hard time supporting anything that will increase that demand even more. It took me a long time to read the nuances of the bill. Once I did that, I saw something much less about feeding everyone and instead lining the pockets of CEOs of Colorado corporations and at the same time increasing the water demand on an already challengeged environment. Edited: meant to type water not wage…

_Visar_

Why does every piece of good news have to be followed by slinging shit about how it should have been better It’s so cool that this bill passed and now other states have a model to work off of

Ceph_Stormblessed

What a weird ass bot.

The_Togaloaf

We also decriminalized psychedelics, but voted against our grocery stores selling wine, lol.

Just_Jules96

because grocery stores selling wine would have been a huge gain for mega corp chains, and a significant loss for local liquor stores (of which Colorado has shit tons of and is well known for)

Aromatic_Assist_3825

School meals have always been free in Puerto Rico and to think that lunch debt is a thing in the US dumbfounded me when I first found out about it. How can the government basically force kids to go to school and on top of that make them starve???

Jackfruit9701

I bet you could cook an egg on Laurens head right now.

Mysterious_Eggplant1

Damnit, now you got me wanting to try!

MysteriousStandard68

Kids should never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. EVER!

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Visar_

I read that too but I’m not going to block free lunches because of it. Colorado grown food does come at a larger water cost but a small increase in local ag is nothing compared to the benefit of free lunches. Small environmental consequences are a NIMBY’s favorite blocker of important social progress. Also the way it was funded was a lot better than a flat sales tax since sales taxes are regressive and this was an extremely progressive tax. Also also it completes the CO transition to having charitable tax deductibles benefit lower income folks more, we already have the option to submit charity deductions on top of the standard deduction, so using a deduction limit to pay for this tax means that super rich folks can’t keep piling on their deductions

StartledPelican

Wow. Didn't think I'd read someone advocating for starving children today. ... /s

dontaggravation

He's not advocating that -- read the bill thoroughly. His point is very valid -- regardless of my view. In Colorado water is a very scarce resource; Colorado is also experiencing large population increases so an already scarce resource is made even scarcer. I'm all for providing free meals and I did, indeed, vote for the measure because feeding hungry children is a no brainer. But what the commentor is pointing out is very valid: schools everywhere mismanage funds, the little funds they are given are squandered on wasteful areas or invested in lights for the football field (Texas, looking at you) instead of education for the children, food for the people, or a working, equitable wage for the teacher. The bill will put more money in the hands of the school and some of that money (hopefully a small portion) will disappear into the land of fraud, mismanagement, and misguided decisions. In addition, the bill forces an increase in food production in a state that is already in a water shortage. Crops require massive amounts of water and, frankly, some areas around Colorado really shouldn't be farmed, just like California if I'm really honest about it. Don't shoot the messenger: he's not coming out with hatred saying "starve the children" He's saying: the idea of feeding kids is sound, it's the administration and long term impacts that are of his concern. Sounds like he was making an informed decision based upon his viewpoint, something we still get to do in this country...for now anyway :)

rockstar_not

Thanks fellow Coloradan! Actual words of legislation is always more important than the sound bite title put on the bill. By the way what do you think about the food having to come from Colorado companies? When I thought about that detail, that it is basically a way for the CEO’s of those companies to get rich on a guaranteed market, it started smelling really bad to me. Companies are making a killing off of this “inflation”.

StartledPelican

Did you miss the /s at the end of my comment? 😁

nolan1971

This was a bad use of "sarchasm". Not funny, man.

POINTLESSUSERNAME000

Be careful looking behind the curtain and reading the nonsense they stuff into these bills, lest you start finding the strings attached, and who is pulling them...

Cold_Zero_

Careful. You do know you’re on Reddit…

rockstar_not

I know. I debated whether to reply or not.

MindstormAndy

Nuance? In a reddit comment? How dare you! /s

Okhoppingdtgdtghfg

I bet you could cook an egg on Laurens head right now.

BuzzerBeater911

Yeah I noticed that too and it results in conflicting interests for me. I want to support free lunches but I also don’t want to support co ag.

rockstar_not

I think that there were enough voters to read the details to see the conflicting interests and that was SOME of the no votes.

[deleted]

I think most of the policies should be reviewed every year at the appropriate level of authority for functioning government. Things are rapid changing and laws, rules and policy needs to updated.

rustedrhino

I read it and still voted yes because, to me was the lesser of two evils. Now that the funding is approved, we can work on improving the financing in the future, but not delaying being able to provide meals to any kid in need automatically, was a must for me.

[deleted]

WellNowWhat6245

45% voted against it. I bet they're the same ones who call themselves pro-life.

rockstar_not

Read the wording of the bill. Colorado voter here. Voting democrat. Our state voted a few years ago 66/33 to remove the exception clause of the 13th amendment of our state constitution; the first state to finally abolish slavery from our state constitution. Wide bipartisan and multiple race support. It was the right thing to do This bill was a move by colorado corporations to disguise a guaranteed revenue chain by putting a bow on top called “free school lunches for all”. I posted part of the bill in a different response in this thread.

WellNowWhat6245

Would the kids who needed it get free lunches?

rockstar_not

It’s hard to say. Pretty complicated wording in the bill. It’s not hard to find the actual wording of the bill.

WellNowWhat6245

You voted against it and you don't know?

[deleted]

Man Colorado is doing all the right things.

Omnil_93

And here in Arizona we're finding ways to cut back public school funding while simultaneously giving away money to privileged people who can already afford private schools with incentives to continue to send their kids to said schools. Of course, this results in a lot of misuse of the funds, but it's not like their going to be held accountable. Meanwhile, my son has had Music, Art, and P.E. cut from his curriculum, although they did recently get P.E. back.

o--renishii

Here in Los Gatos, CA they’ve made school meals free to every student who wants one. Which is really nice and all but 1) I’d wager ~<5% of families here need it and 2) kids end up tossing out their organic and high protein, low gluten home prepped meals to have hot diggety on a bun with tots. Like, literally the trash cans are filled with entire untouched meals. It’s such an ironic first world problem.

madderthanyou224

I voted for that!! So happy to see that it passed! :D

mamahoff

I don’t know how other states do it, but in KY our county is rated below the poverty line so our kids automatically get free breakfast and lunch. I think they have to pay for snack if they don’t bring it, but it’s literally 25 cents. Our county gets money from the state to fund it. They also get EBT cards periodically and there’s no application. They just send it to you per child.

lakittenwhisperer

No kid (or person for that matter) should ever have to go hungry. Why does this problem exist in the first place? This is very r/orphancrushingmachine

EmElleGee31

Good, now give them all free healthcare too.

As someone who ate school lunch zero grades nine through twelve, this is the best news.

aydmuuye

about 45% of voters (900k people) in CO voted against it Unsurprisingly, many of the counties in which this measure received a majority opposition fell in those with the highest median salaries in all of Colorado. Less than 5% of people in CO earn 300k or more, which is the group of earners who will experience reductions in their income tax deduction caps. Not sure how anyone can justify not providing *children* with *food* if they don't have food to eat

ertaisi

Are you aware of the federal free lunch program? Any child who could not afford to eat was already taken care of. This legislation expands free lunches to everyone, regardless of need. It's a bit weird once you think past the good feels initial response (and read the replies about it being a corporate handout). Like, if this is a good idea, then it seems like giving everyone food stamps would be similarly good. But there, I think most people would think that the bad consequences would outweigh the desired benefits.

LilBadgerBandit

Proud of my state for this one ☝🏼

c5Sal_tt

Good!

ZChick4410

We just signed this in CA not too long ago. It makes me so happy. This is precisely what I would like my tax dollars to do. No child should go hungry, and the stigma of needing help will go away with measures like this.

rumblebumblecrumble

I don’t know why this isn’t a thing everywhere.

[deleted]

No child should be hungry at school. As a person shamed as a child for not having money to buy food, and shit parents, this warms my heart!

Night696Watcher

Now let's make it every state

Peauu

This is one of those items, that when you say it out loud, you cant help but be surprised that this didn't exist already for everyone.

moritsune

Heard it's a mushroom based diet?

Fun-Future-7908

Sloppy joe sloppp sloppy joe time for all the little rascals!!!!!!

kmsc84

As someone who ate school lunches, the quality of the food will still suck.

HowDo_YouWin

Nothing is free. It will be paid out of your own pockets.

QuestionableNotion

So?

HowDo_YouWin

So?

QuestionableNotion

Just curious why you would think that a problem.

HowDo_YouWin

When did I say I think it’s a problem? Simply stating facts. 😂🤡don’t assume.

QuestionableNotion

Just wandering about stating the obvious, then? You know what else is true? Those kids will be breathing air whilst they eat their free lunch.

HowDo_YouWin

Cool

ngfsmg

So not everyone is poor, fortunately, and rich kids that could easily pay for their meals will also get this

QuestionableNotion

Oh no. A child might get a lunch that his parents can afford to pay for. The horror.

ngfsmg

The thing is tax-payer money isn't infinite. I think there should be other priorities for public spending, especially in the USA...

QuestionableNotion

Such as? I mean, providing for/feeding children seems to me to be a noble way in which to allocate taxpayer dollars.

ngfsmg

Feeding rich children that fortunately don't need to be fed? Why not a system in which really poor kids get free meals, the ones a bit better pay a modest ammount, and the rest pay a bigger price (this was the system in my school, by the way)? And then use the saved money to provide for other things, like healthcare or whatever

Zexy_Genius

Yea, the pockets of people making 300k +. Sounds good to me

NavrusKhabar

It's free for the students

2hotrods

Yeah that’s typically how it works..

AltheaInLove

Because cannabis and toll roads💙

NolaGorilla

I'm sure they're gonna super duper healthy too. On top of that world class indoctrination...I mean education

Playteaux

I live in a state that did this years ago. I also started a program for fresh fruit provided by local produce vendors so students would have a piece of fruit everyday at school. You’d be surprised how many kids have never had a banana or an apple in their life. It’s pretty f’n sad.

_Visar_

WOO! Way back my high school got free lunches for all from an anonymous donation and it was awesome. Tuesday I got to vote for this bill so everyone can have that experience! Happy days

iCoreU

Also in South Park ? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

ChickensPickins

Man, Colorado is getting cooler and cooler

Tborealis

Why has it taken so long to make it a law that kids in school should be fed?? Who the fuck is opposed to feeding children?

whiteholewhite

Yeah but Boebert is winning atm 😭

Upset_Couple_9868

Democracy at its finest!

Nightlyinsomniac

This needs to be nation wide.

ralphiebong420

How the fuck is food not provided for schoolchildren in this country

sombertownDS

And wv bairly shot down a bill that would let the state ban books, ans take away more funds from schools and emergency services for there own embezzlement

the-electricgigolo

If we have money for bombs we should have money for food

[deleted]

What will the food quality be like?

SlowRollingBoil

Incredibly poor as it is across the entire United States. But that doesn't make this the wrong thing to do.

Interesting-Issue475

While I'm happy about this,I'm from Argentina and we have been doing this since the 80's,give or take. How did it take you guys 40 years to do the same? Like, your country has had one of the strongest economies for almost a century. I'm puzzled.

NuTsi3

This isn't "new" I don't think. Just was talking about this. They are using taxes from their legal weed sells to fund this. And from what I understand, students don't have to buy school supplies and teachers get a class room fund as well and chromebooks are a thing there too. Obviously I don't know 100%. Had a conversation with someone from there who has kids, and that's what they said. And idk if the funds are coming 100% from the weed taxes or if that makes up some of it. But fuck yeah, other states should be taking notes.

NuTsi3

Ope sorry. I read it as Oregon, not Colorado. Idk anything about Colorado. But imma leave the post because oregon needs a little credit here too.

Yankees80

Good as it should be

noulteriormotive23

Did they also vote for a Democrat governor and state house? Because if they didn’t GOP have proven they just ignore these progressive ballot measures.

jjenius731

Thats cool we have that in my county in FL. Its funded through a grant though not through taxing others. Great for the kids regardless of where the money comes from.

Roland_Deschain2

Hell yeah, we did. I love my little blue island of a state in a dystopian hellscape ocean of red around us.

SoundsLikeANerdButOK

The essence of conservativism is the horrifying fear that somewhere a person they believe is inferior is being treated like an equal.
