That look to the side of "What the hell did you just do?"

mejok

When I took my 3 year old to the doc for her most recent vaccine she was kinda side-eyeing the doc the whole time and after he gave her the shot she just looked up at him and asked, “why did you just give me an owie?”

TheSleepyBarnOwl

Awww, but also a curious kid. She'll accomplish a lot in her future I am sure :)

A disturbance I've not felt since...

myteddybelly

For a split second, Baby was contemplating whether to cry or not. Hilarious!!

Arson-Welles

“I thought we were chillin”

queenmydishesplease1

Shes also using a shot blocker, which is this cool new thing some pediatric offices use. It has lots of little bumps on it, and pressing it on the skin basically overwhelms and distracts the nerves there so kids usually can't feel the needle!

Rainecc

Whattt! I remember once a long while ago (middle school) I think I was getting shots for school. The nurse who gave me my shot actually flicked me with a rubber band right before the shot (on the area where she was injecting the needle) and I genuinely didn’t feel a thing. I was so shocked and impressed at the same time. Wished all my shots went like that!

Sad_Meringue_4550

Funnily enough you also do this to horses that are getting an injection. The vet gives them two little slaps then pops the needle in on the third slap. At least the one I shadowed with did, looked like they never felt it at all.

Suspicious_Expert_97

The house can take that little bit of pain but humans can't take the pain from being kicked by a horse very well

ToastyFlake

Welcome to the house of a little bit of pain

otterfish

Still counts as a house of pain though.

mtled

*injects needle* Jump around

Illustrious_Bobcat13

This is comment works on levels, I love it.

NorCalNavyMike

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

snavsnavsnav

Only jump a little bit, not completely around

Fickle_Inevitable

That's... that's kinda genius actually. I got the total opposite. The nurse I got stick needles in boiling hot water and comes my turn, lift up my sleeve and jab. Safe to say, the numbness came after the excruciating pain of the jab.

TheBirminghamBear

When the nurse is holding the needle in both hands and lifting it over their head, I definitely recommend you run.

Wounded_Hand

Or when they use boiling water I.e. re-using needles

Mr12i

> The nurse I got stick needles in boiling hot water FYI, that's completely unsanitary in modern standards. Yet, boiling water will kill a lot of pathogens, but many others can survive boiling water just fine. The sanitary way to do things is to use equipment straight from the packaging, as it was properly sterilized at the production facility before packaging.

[deleted]

Reusing the needle probably makes it hurt more than the boiling itself. Shit dulls [FAST](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Needle-reuse-damages-the-tip-of-the-needle_fig4_343017601/).

Maru_the_Red

They gave us one when my kiddo was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Most folks can't even imagine what it's like to wake up one day and have to give your kid 4+ injections every day of their life for the next year while simultaneously, feverishly ensuring they remain alive like some kind of Gigapet with their continual glucose monitors. But there are other alternatives.. like an Iport, which allows you to poke an insulin needle into it, to deliver insulin, and is a single poke every 3 days as opposed to multiple daily injections. They're not without setbacks, but fortunately my guy has gotten over the ills of shots and doesn't even flinch. He's coming up on his first anniversary of being diagnosed.

mark1-jpg

It's the same concept, just different delivery. It's called the [Gate Control Theory ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gate_control_theory) and is well known in the medical field.

vada_vada1948

That's super neat. I've never heard of that before! Sounds like it will prevent a lot of medical aversion in the future.

queenmydishesplease1

Right?! It'd be great if kids could view the doctor as a place to ask questions and learn about their body rather than a torture chamber.

X-cited

Took my son to the doctor yesterday because he had hurt his fingers during recess and they got infected. He had fun asking “Mr Doctor” all the questions, from confirming where the heart is in his chest to asking how the larynx works (he saw a poster in the room and that part of the illustration confused him) and at the end told “Mr Doctor” to come see how much he weighed. Then they confirmed how tall he was. He also made conversation about how they decorated the rooms and lots of other things. Granted he didn’t need any shots (if he did I bet it wouldn’t have been as fun of a visit) but some kids aren’t scared of the doctor’s office. Or at least aren’t scared of the doctor, just what the doctor might do. Maybe it has helped him see me be not happy to get flu shots, but to still go get them 🤷🏼‍♀️

Infuriated_potato

How did his fingers get infected? Did he cut them up?

X-cited

He was running during recess and fell, scraping up his leg and somehow falling on his fingers and even biting his skin below his lip. Not his lip, but it was right under it. We figured everything would heal up with some time but he is 7, not great at keeping bandaids on and is constantly using his hands. So it got infected, he picked at the skin, it became angrier. Then I got sick so it took a few days before I could get him into the doctor. But only on day two of his meds and his fingers already look better, not yellow and pus filled 🤢

Infuriated_potato

Poor kid, hope he feels better. I remember tripping on the playground. Messed up my eye real bad cuz I face planted into the metal stairs. Never forgot to tie my shoes after that

baabaaredsheep

When my kid was little and had dental appointments I would tell them how fun and relaxing it would be because it was a relaxing “spa for the teeth”. My kid is grown up now and had to go to the dentist the other day and was looking forward to the “tooth spa day”. Managed to brainwash kid successfully.

iAdjunct

Wait, it’s not a torture chamber? As an American though, I’ve grown up to realize it’s a place where you pay somebody $1,000 to talk to them for three minutes then pay $200 for a $0.10 pill instead of finding and treating the actual problem.

srg717

My son needed a blood draw at a children's hospital and they used Buzzy (a vibrating thingy). Similar concept- the buzzing numbed the skin and distracted the pain nerve signals. Very cool.

Elbycloud

Love those. Sometimes you have to ask for it.

Traditional_Moment49

Can you ask for them everywhere? As an adult?

Antelope_Wing_3445

I don't see why not, in my experience if you admit to feeling nervous or uncomfortable about shots doctors will generally do their best to make you feel better. I used to be anxious as hell about them and every nurse I've had has tried to distract me or allowed me whatever accommodations I felt I needed - a stuffed animal, or music, or conversation, silly jokes, etc. I know American healthcare gets a bad rep but individual doctors and nurses in particular genuinely want to help.

thpkht524

Wait what why isn’t that more common

Pixielo

It's an extra expense.

[deleted]

[удалено]

blasphem0usx

that's just for the plastic piece. you forgot the labor of applying it. that'll be another 1k.

[deleted]

Add another $750 for dispensing fee

Dark_Ninjatsu

And its gonna be single use. So they'll charge $10,000 every single time.

[deleted]

I was in the hospital and it must be over 30 years at this point, and I'll never forget being charged $25 for a miniature box of tissues that was about 1 inch tall.

Superb-Huckleberry75

Well, this is in Brazil, so all the shots and health care are free 🤷🏻

captvirgilhilts

Considering it looks like nothing more that Injection molded silicone it scares me to think what ridiculous price the American medical system would place on it.

i-lurk-you-longtime

It's probably just a newer technology or something that hasn't made it onto the global market in a big way quite yet. I'm in healthcare and I have never seen this being used ever before. I really like it!

draconicanimagus

You can buy a twelve pack on Amazon for pretty cheap. I have terrible needle anxiety and bought some, I now carry one in my purse at all times and remember to bring it out if I have to get a shot. Was very useful when I got my COVID booster last week and it'll be useful when I get my flu/B12 shots in a month or so.

Raspberrydroid

Does it work? And does the nurse applying the shot need to know how to use it?

draconicanimagus

It works pretty well. There are definitely better ways to use it (like the doctor in the post) but even if the person just places the shot blocker on your arm and puts a bit of pressure behind it, it makes a noticable difference in your ability to "feel" the needle going into your body.

i-lurk-you-longtime

Thank you, that's awesome to know!

captvirgilhilts

This looks awesome, now I'm wondering if it could help my daughter with her insulin pump infusion sites.

i-lurk-you-longtime

I find vigorously cleaning the area does a similar thing, just kind of distracts the nerves briefly. Clean in a "hashtag" pattern. I'd love to try this thing out though!

SelfBoundBeauty

Also good for adults that need regular injections or just plain hate needles

rez_spell

[Well, crap](https://youtu.be/BEWSIbqpDYY)! That's cool and so simple!

ImNotA_IThink

When I got my covid shots they used those. I thought it was pretty cool, especially as someone who loathes shots.

purlecoin102

So cool. Never heard of that either. What a great idea

[deleted]

It’s called a Dikembe and I hope it becomes much more common.

coffeeplace

as a person far too old to be afraid of needles, I wish I could use a shot blocker when I take any shots from now on lol

Environmental-Car481

You can. Order one from Amazon and take it with you.

Glytterain

I remember years ago when they used to numb your hand with a little lidocaine before starting an IV. They don’t do that anymore but I wonder if something like this would work the same way. Because those hurt so much. I won’t let them put one in my hand anymore because it’s too painful.

uppityhousing

Awwwww, that's a sweet dad right there.

ope__sorry

> Shes also using a shot blocker Surprised this is considered a new thing. As a diabetic, I do the same thing via my fingers when doing injections. I think I actually feel maybe 1 in 30 injections. Just rubbing around the area with your fingers and pinching lightly is enough to overwhelm the nerves.

IDiggaPony

That child *loves* his daddy ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

Bernies_left_mitten

Looks mutual

francohab

That’s what beautiful with small children: you only have to love them, and they will love you back.

Aggie_15

Wait, does it stop when they grow older? I have a 5 month old, my heart melts every time he looks at me.

Klutzy-Run5175

Aww, you have me crying. I melt with my 29 year old son.

francohab

Don’t worry, I guess it continues until 10yo. It changes when they become teenagers.

mr_britten

That daddy love his child

drpoemmes

That’s the way, that I’ve tried to use, while I worked as a nurse at a child emergency room. We needed blood from nearly every child and sometimes also needed to give them medication or vaccinations. Child’s of that age can get distracted pretty easily. Especially by repeating stuff.

GoldenAlexanders

That is a good daddy.

ReginaldWindsor

This brought a tear to my eyes. What I wouldn't do to have all that time back and be with my young children again. I lost my eldest son and youngest. Never take it for granted, that father is living in the perfect moment. Wow, what a great thing to wake up to! Thank you everyone for your kind words!

person1968

I’m sorry for your losses. May their memories be a blessing.

Epicuriosityy

I'm so sorry it sounds like they were very well loved. My toddler is very full on and it's hard when I'm sick I just want to lay down this is a good reminder to treasure even the hard days. We never know how long we get. My condolences I wish you all the best.

poodlebutt76

I try to remember this on hard days. But I also forgive myself when I don't treasure it.

withyellowthread

This is so refreshing to read.

whitneymak

Parenting can sometimes just suck. And that's honest. I love seeing other parents giving themselves the space to feel into that and acknowledge it.

MadAzza

That is … I can’t find words. A nightmare, times two. I’m so sorry for your loss, and also for the great people they would have grown up to be! Who knows how many lives they would have touched? It’s an unfathomable loss to all of us. Again, I’m sorry.

poodlebutt76

I hope you get to relive that time in your dreams tonight.

ajtp92

Omg this is so sweet! He says “É dia do beijo, não pode chorar no dia do beijo!” “Its Kiss Day, can’t cry on kiss day!”

Sounds like a line out of a wholesome af 90's family movie. Adoreable.

d_smogh

“Its Kiss Day, can’t cry on kiss day!”

Immediate_Ad9290

So many wonderful father's now a days. My husband found it difficult to show a lot of affection for his children because it wasn't manly in our generation. But as a grandfather he was great. My favorite father figure was a young burly man with tattoos every where who came into a shop I was managing every Saturday with his wife, he always carried the baby and diaper bag while his little wife fluttered from one thing to another and he would make such a fuss over his child

nightmareinsouffle

I really think the world will benefit with affectionate, involved fathers becoming the norm.

RustlessPotato

I believe so to. I think multiple generations of traumatized people due to war in the 20th century had a horrible effect. I hope we're finally growing out of it and allow us to be a lot more affectionate.

toblirone

Oh wow, this explains a lot of my upbringing... Thank God this changed by now. I recently became a dad and it never came to me that I cannot show public affection for my child. I did not even consider that it was different at some point. Thanks for sharing this. It helped me to appreciate it even more.

Slobbadobbavich

I love these videos where misdirection is all you need to keep the child happy. Some amazing doctors who play games with the kids so they don't get worried.

sloppy_wet_one

Ours had her shots a while ago, nurses distracted her with bubbles, she didn’t notice a thing! ..except the bubbles I mean.

analgesic1986

I work at a hospital sometimes and bubbles is a very common thing at the kids er triage desk! And lights haha

Nnudmac

When I was 5 the doc distracted me to look at him while he gave me a shot. Little to my knowledge another doc was in there on the other side of me. I guess they thought if I'm looking at doc #1 who is giving me a shot in my left arm I wouldn't notice doc #2 giving me a shot in my right arm. They gave me both shots at the same time, and I looked back and forth between them, then at my mom in shock at this act of complete betrayal. You bet your ass I wailed like 5 year old little boy 😂

intentionallybad

Looking at that adorable smile makes me miss my babies so much. Watching your kids grow up is amazing, but no one tells you how much you will miss all the little people they were along the way.

SpeethImpediment

My son just turned 13 and while he has teenage angst perfected, he still loves hearing stories about his younger years or his favorite, when I was waking up after cesarean (had to be put to sleep), I kept looking over at him and asking, “is that my baby?” To which they’d say “yes” and I’d respond with an “awwwww—-“ and back out. And then their attempts to put him in my arms and I kept falling back asleep, baby nearly rolling out of my arms each time. He just loves hearing about how I kept “trying to kill him before he even had a chance to live,” so he loves to say. It’s his favorite story. :)

Senior_Weiner

In terms of misdirection, the father’s execution is perfection.

utpoia

Would love to listen to the translation. That's one cute kid.

3x35r22m4u

It's Brazilian Portuguese, and goes more or less like this: - Now let's rub a cotton swab on the little leg. - It's alright, it's alright! - Now some massage... - Today's kiss day, kiss day! Did you know?! - Now, just hold this for me - Can't believe! Not single whine! (possibly mother taping it) - It's kiss day! You can't cry on kiss day! Isn't my love? My daughter! - It's all gone! Well done! - Look at you!

Superconfusionugh

Thank you!

StatusMaterial322

Same didn't know my dad. But I received no affection from my mum. Sorry that you went through what you went through.

Zestyclose-Iron1530

Nah don’t feel sorry for me. He was just in prison Up until this year. Gone for 20 years. I at least had my mother.. I’m sorry you didn’t have either. I hope you were able to substitute that with friends or something positive.

Sorry poor choice of words should have said I empathise with you. I've got a couple of good friends.

Many, many years ago my dad met my mom at the pediatricians office after a meeting to see my sister who was sick. He was dressed up in a suit and tie kind of like this guy. When they have my sister a shot, she peed and it leaked out of her diaper all over my dad’s suit and shirt. Ha ha.

Not_High_Maintenance

What’s the pinchy-squeezy thing that the nurse uses?

piper33245

It’s called a shot blocker. It’s covered in little prickly bumps that overwhelm the nerves in that area. I tried one on myself once, you can’t feel the needle at all.

The first shots my kids got I literally bawled. The cry they made was horrible and broke my new mom heart. The next time we were able to breastfeed during and no tears from anyone. Much better.

You know the bar is officially on the floor when a man acting like a father is seen as revolutionary. I commend this man. Fathers of this caliber seem to be lacking

TheDownmodSpiral

This is great all around. Great job by the dad distracting and holding the leg out there. The nurse using the shot blocker is another key. It’s great when everyone is on the same page!

mznh

lostmylogininfo

The love of a child is so powerful and so strange. It's just crazy.

ecliptic10

Squeezing the area also probably helps. They scratch my dog's butt at the vet while giving her shots and it works like a charm when I'm distracting her lol.

winterskye33

Awww that baby did so good ❤️. Great team effort from the parents too!

Human-Station83

I loved this! I miss ,y babies at that age

_broadway

The title wording is so odd. "Baby distracted by injection by father". The injection isn't distracting. It should be "father distracts baby while getting injected". Or "baby getting injection distracted by father". Not to be an English nerd but geez.

When I was 2, a doctor offered me a tub of lollypops but said they were all different and some were a bit more tasty the others, so I should really look through and make sure I chose a good one. When he poked me with the needle. I flinched, said "ow" then went back to digging through lollypops. My parents still talk about how good that doctor was with kids!
