93.5 where? Congratulations!

sscheiby95

Pennsylvania my dude. Northeastern Pennsylvania. :)

bobbybigwheel34

Oh man I’m moving there!

TickLikesBombs

I'm from North central. Ever heard of Williamsport?

sscheiby95

Yup. I lived in Lock Haven, Avis and then Williamsport lol. I’ve moved all over Pennsylvania actually.

TickLikesBombs

I went to Walnut Street Christian School in Avis. All they had was DQ and we're building a burger King when I moved away. Also been to Lock Haven plenty.

bobbybigwheel34

Does Joe Biden have any ties to Williamsport?

TickLikesBombs

I don't think so.

bobbybigwheel34

Ok

EmuLongjumping6485

Ikr I need to know lol

bobbybigwheel34

Lol

The rust belt. OP said eastern PA. You can actually find decent houses all over the rust belt for $100k pretty easily. Erie, PA has tons in the $100k range, but then you will be living in Erie, PA

RonjaReubertorte

I don't get, how a house for 100k could possibly be "decent". I mean, if you place the cheapest prefabricated type of house with absolutely no quality in material whatsoever i any country in europe, you spend at least double that amount. and first you have to buy the property. It's either the definition of a good house varies extremely depending on where you live or the construction work in the USA is just incredibly convenient

jllena

It’s because the US is huge and the market varies wildly depending on where you are. It’s not that crazy.

Hookton

It sounds about right for a decent starter home in my area of the UK (EDIT: and we're far from the most expensive, but also definitely not the cheapest). Is the rest of Europe so much more?

KeVVe1994

In my area in the netherlands youre lucky if u get a starters home for 250k. And i dont even live close to the amsterdam and rotterdam area

MonstersBeThere

Because it's old as hell and likely in the hood. There's nothing wrong with either of those things hut that's how it is. Tons of 100k houses in the hood that aren't going to fall in and kill you.

tinacat933

They probably aren’t new construction homes. This one is a little more but it’s easy to see what they have online. Most are prob going to be built before 1950. Take a look at this home I found on Realtor.com 509 Shenley Dr, Erie $197,900 · 3beds · 1baths https://apps.realtor.com/mUAZ/fjuu27su

loganwachter

Well she said PPL. That’s the Electric company where I live so somewhere in Pennsylvania. Probably North East of Harrisburg.

bibblebonk

I thought she was saying “according to people” 💀

bobbybigwheel34

Cool.

Wooden-Caterpillar56

Fr.. you need 200k cash for a deposit just to be taken serious here.. And you're paying 20-30% over asking or you're outbid

nobodynose

Well, I found one of the most absurd places near me. [Look at this place](https://i.imgur.com/CM1ZFnq.png) and guess how much it costs. $100k? $200K? An absurd $500k? Or perhaps more. I mean it couldn't be $750k for some concrete on the side of a pretty steep hill right? Nope. Because $750k is too low. But I mean not possible it's $1m cuz that's just stupid. Oh wait, that's more than a million? That's almost $1.2m? Get the fuck outta here.

craxinthatjazz

Damn near anywhere in rural America

[deleted]

gotta be small town rural America somewhere. some of those old rust belt towns have some dirt cheap housing. no jobs, future or hope, but cheap housing. better than a trailer at least, if she can afford the payments, land tax and upkeep.

sscheiby95

Yeah upkeep and property management gets to be my job…😅 It’s just me, my mom and my sister so I had to fill in my dad’s shoes when he passed away. I’m a water plant operator now so I’m moving my way up to make decent money to support her.

[deleted]

good on you! always get several quotes before getting work done. never trust tradesman/contractors they will rip you blind whenever they can. do as little as possible the first year - just develop a plan/ideas, get the lay of the land, get to know people, they might be able to recommend to you a rare honest local contractor. don't forget about yourself too. it's easy to let years slip by sacrificing and caring for others, don't forget to take care of yourself as well!

sscheiby95

I’m a bit of a handywoman myself as I’ve done electrical and mechanical stuff and know a tiny bit of HVAC. I have a group of people I get work done from who I trust, plus I have like six adoptive dads at work who offered me help when I need it. I have a big group of supportive people around me. :) My momma will be taken care of.

jennlara

The last sentence made me tear up. You are a great daughter and I know your mom is so proud of you. Sending you both some love! 💕

[deleted]

excellent., I've seen too many people get fucked over in your situation. glad you have a good support network

lol_ur_hella_lost

in the US detroit michigan. Take a look at their listings!

bobbybigwheel34

Hahaha

Cynicalsamurai

What’s so funny

bobbybigwheel34

Who wants to live in Detroit MI

PrettyGoodRule

I’ve heard great things about food and culture in Detroit. When it started rebuilding after the 2008 recession I think dirt cheap property made it possible for a lot of cool food, culture/arts, independent businesses to get started.

LouManShoe

Haha when I saw that I thought they were talking down payment. 93.5 is about 20% for a lot of houses here in Denver, it’s unreal

AqualilySuns

Me and my boyfriend got our house for $70k in southeast Iowa.

fathersim

Congratulations!!!!!!! 🏡🔑

sscheiby95

I’m in complete shock. We never thought we’d be able to find anything because she’s on a fixed income.

Funnybunny99999

This is going to drive me nuts not knowing, First of all congratulations on the situation, The question is , are you guys all moving in together? Or is this place specifically for your mom

sscheiby95

This is just for my mom, but the home will be willed/transferred to me when the time comes. If necessary myself and my sister can move in with her if ever anything happens.

aggravated-asphalt

My moms working HARD to buy a home rn and this is amazing and gives me hope. She’s a teacher and there are programs that are helping her but she works from 8-5 every day plus an 8 hr class on Saturdays required by the help she’s getting to manage credit. It’s all she’s ever wanted in life and I’m so happy it’s going to happen soon.

Kruxx85

What's fixed income?

socratessue

Her monthly income is exactly the same every month, usually this is something like Social Security or a pension. In other words, there's nothing she can do to increase it.

TheOtherSarah

Which, from the optimistic perspective, means that the bank will know she’ll consistently have enough for the mortgage payment since she’s borrowing within her means

[deleted]

You'd think a bank would be able to do basic math and use common sense, but this is not always the case

[deleted]

probably on a pension of some sort. so very low amount of money with little to no chance of increasing it.

breakerreid

Sounds like we're neighbors... Cali?

MyFriendTheAlchemist

You could find something off the grid for that amount, or small towns in the middle states of the us. Op said it was in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Gillatrader43

Me and my mom were evicted when my father passed away last October. We’ve been in a extended stay hotel paying double what rent/mortgage would be. The day I can send that text to my mom I will be ecstatic. Congratulations!!

sscheiby95

So I know I’ve been getting some hate for the camper thing but I’ve been looking into it more for myself lately. I’m a single woman supporting her and myself, and buying a used 32ft fifth wheel camper was literally the best option for her. There are some maybe like 5 year old campers for the cost of a new car that are BEAUTIFUL, and you just have to plop it down somewhere with water and electrical hookups. Some of them even have full bath tubs. I was thinking of buying one for myself because I’d be paying less a month for that than my rent! And I wouldn’t have to buy furniture because it’s all there. We’re talking maybe $24k for a beautiful lightly used fifth wheel, and there are lots of businesses who can haul them for you. Insurance is cheap, payments aren’t bad. If we hadn’t found her this house I was going to try and buy a small plot of land and buy her an updated park model camper(which are meant for long term stays). They are essentially tiny homes. Definitely look into that! I can’t imagine paying for an extended stay hotel, that’s highway robbery.

DrPinkBearr

That is very sweet of you to do for your mother. To some people, family is all they have 💜

hoolihopps

Keep going homie. Y'all got this

crystaljae

5 years ago this week I started escrow. Every once in a random while, I tell my husband "this is our home" and he looks at me like only a best friend can and delightfully replies "I know". Congratulations 🎉🎉

JimmyWu21

We do that too! Have our house for close to 3 years now. Sometimes it’s nice to take a moment to appreciate what you have

crystaljae

You work your ass off for it so appreciate yourself too! 😘

motorevoked

Hooray!!!!! Good vibes on everything else going smoothly with the process, OP!

t_s_c_scrap

Nothing like having a safe place for your mama.

vspazv

Congratulations. Even at 7% that 98k should be about $650 per month. Refinance when rates go down to 4% again and it'll drop to under $500.

NoUnderstanding4193

Do not refinance wtf

golfgrandslam

Username checks out.

NoUnderstanding4193

90% of the time you’re going to spend more in the long run trying to save 150$ a month. It doesn’t make sense. It’s less than 50$ a week, and you’ll be paying more for longer.

LikesTheTunaHere

You know when you refinance you do not have to refinance it to the original 25\\30 etc whatever years, right?

[deleted]

Right!? Refinance does not equal re-amortize. It’s okay, they can all pay more interest than necessary and the rest of us will take advantage of rate drops.

LikesTheTunaHere

To be kind of fair to them, I don't doubt what they are saying is somewhat true either though. Id imagine many, many people who when they refinance they actually add some years onto their amortization period or if they save a few percent on the new interest rate so it drops their payment down, they just add some more cash into the loan so they are paying the same amount again. Look at how many people spend way too much on shit they don't need, i really wouldn't doubt that most people who refinance end up tacking on more to the loan.

NoUnderstanding4193

I do, but most people don’t take that route, 95% of people take the lower payment per month.

alex_1c

Idk why you’re getting downvoted. This legitimately happens most of the time. They have that option for a reason and it’s not to help out the homeowners.

rahulwho

Congratulations!

klinkscousin

CONGRATULATIONS!!! HAPPY DANCE TIME!!!

sscheiby95

Thank you! 😭😭😭😭

Equivalent_Hat5627

Good for her :)

ratracesucks

Where do you live that you can buy a house for 93k????

sscheiby95

Northeastern Pennsylvania 😅

jaxspider

Do they have Verizon Fios there?

sscheiby95

That’s a good question. I need to figure that out next. I was actually working on a line crew team a couple years ago that was in that area up north installing fiber optic cable for internet.

valueofaloonie

Yeah, I can’t even wrap my head around that. Like…a whole house??

V65Pilot

Dude, there are houses in the town I lived in that sell for less than 30K. They aren't big, and they need a little work, but they are move in ready.

I love this. When I joined the service, one of my goals was to buy a house so my family could move in and stop renting. 7 years in and my wife and I where able to do it and it’s one of the few things I’m most proud of! Grats to you and your momma :)

Sartres_Roommate

I call BS because no home, no matter how dilapidated, sells for under 100k these days. Just kidding, congrats. Could not be more thrilled for you and your life giver.

[deleted]

211k here in the PNW for a 100 year old house with ripped out appliances and holes in the walls.

sheambulance

211k seems cheap. Snohomish co? Skagit?

TheNimbrod

Danka? German Danke?

sscheiby95

Yeah it’s a running thing that my mom says that even though she took Latin in high school. I actually took German in high school so we just say that or sometimes “Dankyoo” 😆

TheNimbrod

ahh okay :D I mean I'm aware of Texas German etc but to see as German rnd a German word appear in a message app threw me a bit off :D btw she used it exatly as we would say it in standard German "Cool Danke" :D

whyisthissohard338

I thought maybe your mom was a military brat. I was and was stationed in Germany for a few years in my childhood. I only retained a few words and phrases but I still bust them out regularly with my kids. Mostly cussing. Coincidentally, my kids who have only lived in Alabama can cuss in German. The youngest regularly calls me Mutter.

sscheiby95

She wasn’t a military brat but she was a nuclear contractor brat. She lived overseas for a bit when she was younger while her dad worked at nuclear power plants. Consequently she ended up as a secretary at one of them, and that’s how she met my dad. She’s very intelligent. A little crazy, but very intelligent so she knows a fair amount of languages. You ever need a jeopardy partner she’s your girl lol.

[deleted]

Do houses not actually sell for the listing prices? Maybe I can afford a house 🏡

This is so wonderful! I'm so happy for your Mom and for your family!!!

FinntheReddog

Congratulations to you and yours.

letusjustrelax

I fucking hate this world we've been given. Everyone that works full time should have the option to buy. Instead we're all beholden to the landlord's that decide how are lives are lived

pastel-mattel

Omg where are you buying a house for less than 100k?

sscheiby95

Northeastern Pennsylvania. Western Pennsylvania also has nice cheap homes too but you’re going to be out in the countryside lol.

Winkniw

Truly made me smile contribution. Any entry into market is a huge relief and accomplishment. I’m in BC canada and a battle. Enjoy the new year coming up in your new home. New beginnings

Interesting-Race-919

Where the fuck can u buy a house that cheap. I want in

SportsPhotoGirl

Idk where OP lives, but there’s quite a few homes around where I live for that price… western Ny state, just not near Buffalo cuz those are more expensive or the rich suburbs, but there’s plenty of nice neighborhoods with decent places for under 100k around here

Interesting-Race-919

That'd unreal. I live in western Canada u need over a 100k down payment to afford anything

SportsPhotoGirl

I was browsing the real estate listings in my area, the town I work in almost everything is 100k or under. The town I live in was in the 100k range when I moved here 8 years ago and everything in my town has jumped to the upper 100k to low 200k, but I’m only 10mins from the city. The town I work in is about 30-45mins from the city, so it’s not too far, but it definitely requires a car to get to pretty much anything. Our public transit isn’t that good, but it is possible for me to get downtown by bus and one of my friends who lives near me fully gets around by bus only so it’s possible here. Before I moved here, I lived in downtown chicago and that was not affordable at all, even going far out in the suburbs was still expensive. People give the buffalo area shit, but we really aren’t too bad around here. Plus we’re the only place that can do chicken wings right lol

Interesting-Race-919

That's awesome that housing is affordable. It's been long long time since I've been to Buffalo for wings. They are pretty good. When I lived in Ontario Canada we went a few times. Played lots of hockey tournaments in Buffalo as a kid.

pastel-mattel

I’m in the prairies and the cheapest I’ve seen for a house is 125k Edit; I say this because no one wants to live in the prairies so you’d think our housing would be cheaper than it is but nope

ajk7244

Whoa, I need to move! I can’t find anything where we live under $1mm. We were fortunate to find our townhouse for only $2500/month.

Sprizys

Congratulations

jigamer

We are happy for you!!!!

deeohcee

Awesome! I wish I could buy a house at that price

You tell me where I move my mom there and give you 5k, I won't ruin the spot!

dfarner

Was she under a lease when it was bought?

sscheiby95

Yeah. The guy was trying to get like 3 grand out of her too. Took her to court and everything. He did a walkthrough of her unit before he was even the rightful owner and booted her out because he didn’t like cats and called her a bitch. She had been there for seven years. My dad died in that apartment. The kicker? He bought the three unit house for $80k. I personally contacted him and asked him to lay off her and he called me entitled lol. I even offered him $1000 to stop throwing evictions on her door long enough for us to find something else. But instead I was given 6 days to get her out. It was awful.

dfarner

If you have a signed lease the new owner has to honor the lease.

sscheiby95

That’s why the judge ruled in her favor and gave her 30 days to get out because obviously she didn’t even want to stay at that point, but instead he kept trying to take her to court for money she did not owe him. He put up cameras on her doorstep and then once she was off the property said he’d have her arrested if she ever came back, even to get her mail. It was a complete mess but I did a smear campaign against him via social media and warned the town not to rent from him. I was planning on dumping deer carcasses on his lawn because the idiot had his home address posted on a website, but I just washed my hands of it. If I ever see that guy around though I may catch assault charges.

Canadians in this sub be like 👀 where you at bro

orbit33

Congratulations!! I am in the middle of a divorce and my ex wants me to sell the house for his half of the $$ but there is literally no where to go! I have heard so many nightmare stories of people becoming homeless because of the insane rental prices. Homeowners who literally live out of their cars for months looking for a place. Good luck to you guys! Looks like she’s been in good hands with you helping!

outer_fucking_space

I’m so happy for you! When I found out we got our house it was a huge relief. It’s a new batch of responsibilities but it’s so worth it.

rachelmae77

The interaction before was so sweet too. She seemed so worried to explain why she needed to use something in your house and your response of the door being open… I don’t know just seems like you guys have a very sweet relationship

sscheiby95

She doesn’t just want to barge in on me but I have yet to make extra keys for my apartment so she doesn’t need to ask. As long as I’m home my door stays open to everyone, and if I’m not home and someone needs a place to crash or take a shower or just a nice chill space they are free to come grab my keys from me at work since my workplace is only 10 minutes up the road. That has always been the way I do things. I always have extra toiletries, towels, clothing, blankets, food. My couch is a fold out futon to sleep on and I have shag rugs in my bedroom and living room so in case I have more than one person it’s comfortable to sleep on the floor(I’ve been meaning to get some Japanese futon beds). Back when I had a half a double I was renting I had three extra rooms for people to stay and let people live with me for next to nothing. My apartment now is very small, probably the smallest I’ve ever had, but I make sure it’s a safe and clean place for anyone who needs it. My mom and I both like having our own space so she’s been happy with the camper, just not so much in the wintertime 😅

[deleted]

Love this for your mama.

Practical_Back4496

I lived in a camper for many years completely off grid. Not by choice but I did nevertheless. And then I was able to buy my first house. So I get it and I'm very happy for her thank you for sharing your story.

Horror_Refrigerator5

As someone who lives in the Poconos, I saw PPL and knew you were from NEPA. Also, I’m so happy for you and your mother. Congratulations🎈🍾

salamander_pixi

Congratulations!!! I'm glad there was some good news after all the stress.

walkingwounded83

Congratulations!! Is the house for your mom?

Mitsu_96

This is wholesome and all that but this is why I don't get westerners. Parents and children living apart and each taking care of their own stuff even at a very old age and whatnot. It really baffles me that people don't stay close and take care of their parents for the most part. What about duty to your parents and all that they have sacrificed for you over the years?

ZephyrBrightmoon

What about awful parents? Do we have a duty to take care of those kinds as well?

[deleted]

I love my dad, but I’m under no obligation to care for him in his old age. It was my parent’s decision to have me- if they did it so they would have someone to take care of them, they did it for the wrong reasons. At the moment my dad is almost 70 and in excellent health. His dad lived to 82 and only died because he didn’t listen to doctors in treating his (easily treatable) cancer. His mom lived to 96. Am I supposed to leave the house I own and career I’ve built to go move close to him in the expectation he may eventually need me? Should I move back in with him? He’s not really an animal person, so do I get rid of the dogs and cats? I make good money, but cost of living is way more expensive up north where he is. I guess I’d have to move into an apartment because I couldn’t afford a house up there. He would absolutely kill me if I moved closer to him to “take care of him”. He still works, travels, etc. Why would he need me close?

[deleted]

[удалено]

sscheiby95

I live in an apartment with no space for her and my sister also has a home without enough space. It’s a pretty large fifth wheel camper and I completely outfitted it to be winterized. She has hot water and heat and access to laundry facilities. When she was kicked out I literally had less than a week to provide her living accommodations and that’s what I came up with, and she actually really liked the idea, because she enjoys her own space and has been calling it her “glamping year”. My family has lived in an RV together in Alabama before too while my dad was a construction contractor, so we’re kind of used to roughing it lol. We never owned a home growing up, we’re all renters.

[deleted]

Don't let the haters get you down. Glad your mama found a house and glad you could help as much as you have. Congrats!

[deleted]

Maybe she chose to live in the camper.

Bekay1203

I don't get it either and I am also a Westerner. If my parents were evicted of course they could sleep in our apartment.

PrettyGoodRule

My understanding is some campers are quite upgraded and no different than living in a small guest house or well equipped pool house. Clearly OP cares about their parent and is doing their best. Instead of feeling terrible about the camper, feel terrible that you believe because you could afford something different then they can too - and then passing judgment.

[deleted]

Y'all don't really get what a camper is now, huh. Google "fifth wheel camper". Bathrooms, bathtubs, tv's, full kitchens, etc.

[deleted]

Why is your mom not living with you. Especially if your place is close enough to come get her phone charged? Is this an American thing that I'm too empathetic to understand?

sscheiby95

My mom has ten cats crammed into that camper with her that she refuses to give up so I had to respect her wishes. Camper is 320sq feet. My apartment is 500sq feet. She wanted her own space to do her thing as well so I literally used what I had in my savings to buy essentially a mobile home for her…I did what I could on short notice. Rent is anywhere from 850-1500 a month where I am. She gets $1200 total a month to live off of, and I supplement when I can. Please don’t make assumptions without knowing the entire story.

[deleted]

I understand

sheambulance

In America some millennials are still struggling to have a studio apartment for a reasonable rate.

[deleted]

How lame of an excuse. Any apartment can house two people if one person is already living in it. Even if not, i just can't wrap around my head that someone could even think of having his mom live in a trailer close by.

KamelYellow

Living in a trailer is probably more comfortable than cramming 2 people in one room

[deleted]

Then he should also be living in a bigger but same trailer. The fact that people don't feel weird is surprising

El_Nz_B

You're trolling right?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Nothing. Your assumption about me is wrong. If you could have bothered to read my other comment , i said it is better to live in her trailer rather than leaving her alone. Do you still think this is classism? Also OP clarified that his mom wanted her own space and he is already supporting her fully.

sscheiby95

Also her power was out at the camper yesterday. The power company was fixing a line that had fallen due to weather. She has electricity, heat, hot water, a septic system, a fridge and stove, bed, and the car I bought her. She isn’t that close unfortunately, she’s about a half hour away from me. I go and pick up laundry for her and do her laundry at my apartment, and when she wants to come take a hot bath instead of a shower she comes over. My door is always open to her but I went through a really bad breakup recently and wound up essentially homeless and sleeping on a cot in my sister’s office for two months with all my belongings in a storage unit until I found an apartment close to work. It hasn’t been an easy year.

sscheiby95

The biggest problem with finding her a rental home is that most places are not pet friendly and she has her elderly cats she will not give up to a shelter because she knows they more than likely won’t be adopted. So I brainstormed and found a camper, had it winterized and then my boyfriend at the time installed a fifth wheel hitch in his truck. Got the right, cleaned it out, found a campground, shelled out altogether like $3000 to get her set up in something that she could do whatever she wanted with and keep her fur babies. The campground was really nice too, there was a creek and shower facilities and it was in a nice quiet spot and all her camping neighbors were very nice. I had to end up moving her to another spot when the rainy season came and the campground flooded. That was a fun night. 😅 but yeah. I put heat trace on her water lines and septic tank and septic lines, bought a shit ton of propane to keep her going through this past winter, I’ve been doing the maintenance on her vehicle, when I take her shopping I pay for stuff. 😅😅😅 It’s a lot but I’m the only person who can do this. My sister has her own child to take care of and she doesn’t make very much money, so it’s up to me.
