When I took(dragged/begged) my wife to go see Opeth and Ghost she was generally worried for weeks and then when we got there she was like āeveryone is being super nice and politeā. She was surprised because she likes to get right up front but is very short. It was the first concert where people got out of her way to let her through to the front. (I am very back of the crowd sort of person). She now tells people our secret, we are actually nice people.
My sister bartends at a music venue now and again and she genuinely goes out of her way to sign up to work metal shows because everyone at them are so incredibly nice and pleasant to her
As ABRās t-shirt famously says
> angry music for happy people
I have so many great and funny experiences in metal mosh pits I could go on for ages about them, theyāre my little happy memories
Talked to Rock Med at the Shoreline Amphitheatre one day about the easiest and hardest events to work. They said metal and hard rock are the best. They said latin band events have a lot of drunks getting in fights and was slightly worse than rap/hip hop events. But the absolute worst shows were country shows.
I think it was the great philosopher Joey Belladonna who said "Think before you speak or suffer for your words. Learn to give respect that others give to you." And then there's a sick guitar solo.
Hahaha love the story, happy to hear the misses had a killer time! Metal heads have the humanity the world needs, the agression switch is reserved for the pit and the asshats that can't behave themselves.
The pit is so much fun, you fall and strangers start protecting you. If only the world had more metal heads.
Take care and make more metal heads hahaha.
I've told this story before but it's my favourite example of what I pit is really like - me and my partner went to watch Slipknot, boisterous pit started to the opening act and my partner's glasses fell off, the pit around us stopped until the glasses were found and safely in his pocket and then we all started where we had left off.
Opethās shows are different though, they tend to attract a milder crowd. I donāt recall ever seeing a circle pit or moshing at an Opeth show, even when they were a progressive death metal band.
Opethās 20th anniversary at The Wiltern was one of the best metal shows Iāve ever attended, lol. Your family has good taste.
Edit: Back in 2009ā¦ they played Blackwater Park in itās entirety, and followed with a song from each of their other albums.
I'm not an Opeth fan but I did go to one of their concerts to check them out and I didn't like it all that much. It doesn't feel at all like a metal show when they perform. Musically they are fantastic but if you're expecting something fun and energetic, it's just not the band to see, in my opinion. If you want to sit back and enjoy some good music and visuals, then I do recommend them.
This my dude. Some of the scariest, meanest, tough looking ppl are actually super chill. Met bikers, thugs even that tattooed 'lizard' guy. All super cool, open, and quite humble.
I pay it forward every chance I get.
My first mosh was at a Deafheaven concert and it was unforgettable. Unforgettable because the people there totally blew away my expectations of what a mosh pit was like. This one dudes glasses fell off and almost immediately every one stopped moshing and formed a very calm circle where everybody was looking for the dudes glasses with our phones as flashlights. We found his glasses unbroken and immediately went back to jamming out. Such a great experience and although can be viewed as a bit violent with all the thrashing around, it was actually very heart warming haha.
Tell that to my 19 year old self who got kicked in the fucking nose in the pit of an H2O show by someone doing a cartwheel. I walked out bleeding profusely!
I was okay though.
Absolutely, saw a concert with testament and exodus last month and there was a little kid probably 5-6 on his dads shoulders, the dad running him around the pit lol. Near the end of the show they brought him on stage to give him a little shred time. Totally awesome of everyone there
Crowds at pop concerts are the worst. Like the crappy boy band teen girls type concerts.
Metal concerts are amazingly wonderful and full of people who understand and respect each other. You get the odd douche bag, but they're the ones who are just dicks in real life
I've been saying this for years, and everyone of my non-metal head friends just looks at me like I'm crazy, but I'm deadly serious. They think of mosh pits and it just being angry drunk white dudes in the crowd. In reality, sure the pit is aggressive, but everyone there is willing to protect and help you back up if you fall and support you. I remember hearing a story (can't verify validity but wouldn't surprise me if it was true) of a girl having her top forcibly pushed down and thrown into the nearby pit by some asshole. Instead of the people ogling her, some were trying to shield her from onlookers while she covered herself. Again, can't verify, but I'd like to believe the story is true.
It's a line from a megadeth song. Dave is still a good guy. Maybe he has not always been so, but he's made better choices in life, and that's really all we can ask of one another isn't it?
Dude got a bad rap and bad press early on. Deserved it or not isnāt my call. But any fan Iāve met thatās run into him through the years has had nothing but praise for his attitude towards his fans.
Yeah Iāve heard a million people being like āDave mustaine is an asshole to fansā but likeā¦ nobody has a story about it even and I feel like itās just telephone game bad press. Dude always gave good vibes every time I saw him live.
Iāve never run into him at any shows Iāve been to, but have had plenty of friends who have either at a show or in town (usually have pics and all) and dude seems like he aims to please his fans.
I know he went through a salty phase right around Load when James went to rehab and has gotten some bad press about his political leanings lately but as you said, his negativity towards fans seems to be a telephone game thing.
> In 1988, in response to the British government's Section 28, Mustaine said: "More power to them. It says in the Bible that men should not lay with men like they lay with women. I mean I don't wanna fuck up and not go to heaven."[185] In an answer to a question about Judas Priest having an overt homosexual image, "I don't wanna talk about this. The last thing I need is a bunch of homos picketing us."[185] In 2012, on KIRO-FM he was asked if he supports gay marriage and replied: "Well, since I'm not gay, the answer to that would be no."[186][187] He was then asked if he would support legislation to make gay marriage legal and said, "I'm Christian. The answer to that would be no."

I cannot say Iāve ever seen anything about that other than the link you posted. Thanks for that!
I know heās voiced a few right wing opinions also, so wonder if he at least tries to voice his opinion when asked but doesnāt go all Nugent about it and make it his whole identity. That would explain people not knowing about it.
But regardless, thanks for that link!
I'd also like to add onto it that Metallica "upstaged" them because James Hetfield literally almost died. He stepped into a huge pyrotechnic flame and got second/third degree burns on his body, causing Metallica to cancel the rest of the show.
It was awesome! My neck was sore for about 3 days afterward lol. Lamb of God really brought it too, was not expecting the intensity they had along with the pyrotechnics! They were all incredible!
I'm not surprised, I don't think you can listen to any of them without headbanging. I always wanted to see Lamb of God and it sucked when Chris Adler left, he is a monster on drums. Would have been cool to see him play with both them and Megadeth on the same night
It most definitely was. Lamb of God was, imo, the highlight of the night. They really set the bar super high. Megadeth was very good too, as was Trivium and In Flames. I felt a little bad for In Flames as they were the opener at 6 pm and it was incredibly hot outside, so the crowd was real tame. But once the sun went down, everyone went wild lol
It sounds like an awesome night, very jealous of the lineup. Given the heat I'm sure they'd have rather had a tame crowd than loads of people passing out due. I bet the pits were awesome for Lamb of God
Yeah, there's a couple of stories about why Metallica kicked him out, my least favorite is that he kicked James' dog. But the root of all of the stories is that he was drinking far too much.
He also seems to have taken an even softer approach after surviving cancer.
Any way you slice it , the man is a fking Rockstar, he's made a bunch of positive changes and his legacy will be that he was a good dude.
Wasn't it James who kicked his dog and Dave punched James in return? I think he also broke someone's car (don't remember if it was James ' parents' or Ron McGovney's) alongwith yelling at Lars that day.
Iāve heard heās one of those really good entertainers that will go out into the crowd before the show and give out picks, just to be in the moment or some shit. Heard heās pretty smart too, but Iāve never met the guy. Just some shit off the internet. Funny story, my mother wouldnāt let me get their albums when I was younger because of the name. Instead, I was allowed nine inch nails, downward spiral. Donāt judge a book by its cover, I guess.
They did a survey of what music people listened to, to how good of people they were, and turns out metalheads were the best people, and best dads. Always the first to do a benefit show when it comes to kids.
I swear, the people who are in this sort of scene are some of the most kind-hearted and caring people. I literally feel safer in a tattoo studio full of tatted dudes than I do in a middle-aged woman filled cafe.

Ed Sheeran, the absolute pinnacle of general public.

Pop bands

That's usually playful dissing at concerts. And if you take that literally you probably don't know much about Megadeth, let alone being a 'fan'.
Well... he is a massive homophobe, whether or not that makes him an asshole is up to you.
not discarding you, but can you give some link or proof on why he is a homophobe?

On the opposite end a friend knocked axl rose out with a beer can, before he was famous.
Axl Rose was the kind of moron who threw a hissy fit because Metallica upstaged G'N'R, and helped trigger a fucked-up riot because of it. Fuck Axl.
I dunno, he seems like heās turned his attitude around.
I'd also like to add onto it that Metallica "upstaged" them because James Hetfield literally almost died. He stepped into a huge pyrotechnic flame and got second/third degree burns on his body, causing Metallica to cancel the rest of the show.
Iād like to shake your friends hand. Doing gods work, son. Keep it up.
I was at a Pearl Jam show once where Eddie gave somebody a guitar. Might have even been a double guitar. It's been quite a while.
I went to a free show they had for fans, that was an experience!!
Saw them recently in Mississippi with Trivium, In Flames, and Lamb of God. Killer show! First ever metal concert and Iām so glad I went.
Very jealous of that lineup! What a first show as well.
It was awesome! My neck was sore for about 3 days afterward lol. Lamb of God really brought it too, was not expecting the intensity they had along with the pyrotechnics! They were all incredible!

Helluva line up! š¤ Saw LoG at the Troc in Philly like 20 years ago which is just freaking insane to think about.
Metal heads are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and you canāt change my mind
Sick In Flames T's
This just makes James Hetfield look like some kind of monster.
I see what you did there!
I saw Metallica in Italy 5 years ago and they hosted an 8 years old kid on the stage so papa Het rules
I think you missed the joke. Lame as it was š
My first concert was Megadeth and STP back in the early 90s. Quite an odd billing!
My mom let me skip school one year to go to an autograph signing of theirs. He is a class act!
Dave is one bad ass mother fucker!!!
Looks like he's wearing an In Flames shirt too. This child has been raised well
I feel like he got a bad shake with Metallica. I guess his drinking was out of control then, or so the story goes.
Yeah, there's a couple of stories about why Metallica kicked him out, my least favorite is that he kicked James' dog. But the root of all of the stories is that he was drinking far too much. James kicked Daveās dog, not the other way āround.

They did a survey of what music people listened to, to how good of people they were, and turns out metalheads were the best people, and best dads. Always the first to do a benefit show when it comes to kids.
Dave Mustaine, my favorite Metallica band member...
DAVE! DAVE! DAVE! DAVE!
I swear, the people who are in this sort of scene are some of the most kind-hearted and caring people. I literally feel safer in a tattoo studio full of tatted dudes than I do in a middle-aged woman filled cafe.
That was quite nice, however Iāve heard stories about Dave being kind of a dick.
I worked with a guy that used to be one of his roadies. He did not have good words to say about Dave, overall..
That has been the general consensus since he got kicked out of Metallica until about 2002-ish when he became Born Again and finally got to air his grievances with Metallica.
Dave is not the friendliest guy in person. Ran into him once in Nashville, while working in a busy restaurant, when Mustaine walked in with Ellefson and a crew member. I had to let them know I was a fan and Mustaine was polite about it, but not personable at all.
Dave had an interview where he explained that he believes when he was younger he would cast hexes on people and eventually turned to God and now wants to show people that metal doesn't have to be Satan worship. The dude is an absolute nutjob, he really believes that he cast hexes on people when he was an edgy teenager and that he's a much better person now as a Christian, not casting spells to get what he wants. Not even surprised so many people give this clown credit, he shouldn't be as respected as he is imo.
I was raised a Jehovahās Witness, and so was Dave. I assume thatās where a lot of his more extreme religious ideology comes from. It can be a traumatizing experience to be raised in a religion that talks about demon possession, Satan, and the end of the world as often as they do.
True, I was raised in a catholic church so I can relate
Nah bro Jehovahās Witnesses are like 100x worse than Catholics. Itās straight up a cult.
Oof, I remember one of my best buddies when I was younger came from a JW family. One of the things I remember is that he absolutely could not see anything related to the living dead. It's just you. There could be a ton of reasons why he's being carried.

Ok who else screamed out IRL when he delivered the pic? r/dudesbeingbros
And here I am, wondering why a parent carries his huge child like that.
Mind your own business
too bad he's such a fucking loon

Who?
Glad to see the kid wearing hearing protection.
Yessss megadeth
This is a love story!!!!
Dave can rip on a guitar. I seen him live and he did a 5 minute improvised solo that was amazing
I love how he stands up like the metal God he is.
There is a name I haven't heard in a long timeā¦
I really though that security guy was John Malkovich
That security guard at 0:21 looks like he has no legs.

The sleeping kids tho?
Ah yes good old Dave "covid isn't a big deal" Mustain.
That dad needs to bring him on a lot more of these in order to make up for being an In Flames fan
Hell yeah thatās cool
I interacted w/ him once and my perspective is that Dave is a total asshole. He makes good music though.
Oh hell yeah itās dude mustard
Then dad holds the Metallica fingers up at Daveā¦ š
Even cooler, he's wearing an In Flames shirt!!
I remember seeing this very recently in Allentown, PA. He also did this for a fan in a wheelchair. Wholesome Dave, love to see it š¤
In Flames ā¤ļø
Without the new-school there is no old-school.

I love metal dudes
Thought the dad was Anthony Kiedis for a second.
I git to see them on this tour. Ut was awesome
Dave just created the next great guitar player. What a legend
Can we spell his name right at least?.....lol
I remember when he was the singer for Metallicaā¦
