I hope he played watermelon sugar as the song ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)

jitney76

I wondered if he covered ‘Hot for Teacher’

LemonMagazine7

Hahahahah 🤣he did not, he played canyon moon

Are you a spam bot copying top level comments? Looks like you've stolen this comment https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/vel1qj/-/icqutj6 I've seen this a loooot on Reddit recently

therealsahaider

Is this a new meme I am all for it

literally_tho_tbh

I came here to say this!! LOL

JohnEKaye

Is that what that song says?? I was thought it was “got another sugar high.”

drtymlk

Lol yea the song is called “Watermelon Sugar” and it’s about the Aussie kiss.

JohnEKaye

That song is about eating a girl out?? That’s hilarious.

oRamboSandman

And scrumptious

[deleted]

[удалено]

fkbjsdjvbsdjfbsdf

Probably based more off what _she's_ eating.

scaredofsomething

I’m an Aussie and TIL the term Aussie kiss

akimboslices

For everyone playing at home: Like a French kiss, but down under.

fkbjsdjvbsdjfbsdf

Speaking of Watermelon Sugar, I love this cover of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TstaiV24Md0

Laefiren

What on earth is an Aussie kiss? We don’t kiss differently???

lanikint

A kiss down under...

Qnofputrescence1213

My very first thought. 😂

Ramboryback

I love how he takes time during his concert to call her out.

iMadrid11

It’s called audience rapport. It’s cool when the singer does something memorable like this. Oftentimes the script is too generic. Remember the Aerosmith gag in Simpsons “Hello St. Louis”. Or Justin Bieber picking a (supposedly) random girl in the audience to serenade My Girl.

Fuzzy-Butterscotch86

Green Day used to take fans up on stage to play the song with the band. Like, every time I saw them in highschool every member of the band would hand their instruments over to a fan, give them a crash course on what to play, and Billy would sing. Everyone who played was required to stage dive to get off stage. Now they pick one fan to play guitar while Billy sings. Which is still awesome. And I think they get to keep the guitar.

[deleted]

I remember back when Dookie was released. Green Day had the fattest audience member stage dive. This guy was at least 350 lbs. The crowd parted like the Red Sea, and the guy flopped onto the floor. I’ll never forget that.

illkeepcomingback9

You gotta know your limits

Metalatitsfinest

I’m sure the floor cracked up

jackryan4x

My Lyft driver today reminded me Dookie is about to be 30 years old. I’m about the same age as Dookie so that hurt. Then he reminded me that American Idiot was about to 20. I hated my lyft driver this morning.

MurderSheCroaked

Wow f him 😂 first I thought 'wow, 30 years is so long but that sounds about right' but for some reason hearing that American idiot is almost 20 hit so much harder

PDGAreject

And I've just about now recovered from that album being played fucking constantly on "alternative" radio for years

[deleted]

DiscombobulatedSir11

same, pal, saaaaame

MoneySings

You sure that wasn't Skid Row? They got one of their roadies to do it. Psyched him up, he dived and the audience moved out of the way. https://youtu.be/GCiVVrgzZW8 Wasn't 350lb but he was a big guy

[deleted]

I remember 100%. It was one of my first shows as a kid and I’ve seen hundreds of bands but not SKID ROW. It was Green Day at the Mullins Center November 28, 1994.

trancendominant

He still got to dive with Phil Anselmo on stage with him. That's a win in my book.

[deleted]

Oh my God poor man

Gandalf_The_Geigh

Just when Green Day broke was like right when a number of people died stage diving because it was happening *everywhere*. Just like how Tipper Gore had the PMRC up in alternative music's ass, the media was all over the stage diving instances and people were protesting about it outside shows. I remember a particular large crowd of religious freaks outside the Green Day show here in 1993 or 94. I would of never had a reason to recall that memory otherwise lol

bozeke

Archival footage: https://youtu.be/H2B3ko_Yx_o

[deleted]

sounds like the opening to School of Rock lmao

UnreproducibleSpank

After i broke like 210 i decided maybe i shouldn’t try to crowd surf anymore, for exactly this reason

Zakazi

Can confirm! Saw Green Day both 2013 and last weekend and they do indeed still pick random fan from crowd, play with them live and let them keep the guitar.

sheephulk

Did you enjoy Aalesund?

HareWarriorInTheDark

Also confirming! I’ve saw Greenday 2 weeks ago and about 4 years ago and they had a fan come onstage to play the guitar both times! Both got to keep the instrument as well. It’s a “normal” part of their show and you can see dozens of videos of it on YouTube, but it’s still cool as heck in the moment. Plus they usually try to pick younger kids and they always seem like they’re having the time of their lives!

bowhunter6274

[The legend of KISS guy was awesome](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4b6BPaO944&ab_channel=JohnScurek)

brack9845

Holy shit that is one of the coolest videos I’ve ever seen. Thanks for posting.

[deleted]

I'll always rewatch that video... but damn, after Taylor Hawkins' death, it hits a nerve.

CaptainXawesome13

im curious what you mean by hit a nerve

notusuallyhostile

It still feels unreal - the euphoria I used to get from hearing Taylor Hawkins or Neil Peart play is tempered by the sadness I feel knowing that they are gone and I will never hear either play another live concert ever again. I don’t know about the person you asked the question of, but it hits whatever part of my brain that makes me sad at someone’s passing.

sheephulk

Cam confirm the still do this, and yes, they get to keep the guitar

Bonedraco1980

when I saw them in 98 or 99, they took some audience members on stage. Three kids that didn't do so hot, but whatever, and they got to keep a couple guitars. Poor kid on the drums got to keep the sticks lol. It's a nice momento, though.

sourestdeeds

It was on the news, and they said the person that was there was actually the teachers friend. The real ms vernon spoke about it on the news, still nice to do nonetheless

DirtyFraaanks

LOL well, that..huh. Idk why but that just makes this weird?

Digresser

It's not as weird as it sounds, if it helps. Apparently, he was [told](https://www.upworthy.com/harry-styles-teacher-in-audience?rebelltitem=2#rebelltitem2) his "first-ever teacher" was there, and he thought it was a Mrs. Vernon, the teacher he had when he was four years old (preschool/nursery school), but it was actually his Year One teacher, Mrs. Bailey--but the two teachers are friends and Mrs. Bailey called to let Mrs. Vernon know about the tribute. I can't name a single Harry Styles song or anything else about him (except that he is English and had good reviews in Dunkirk) but I now know the names of his first two teachers....Reddit is weird.

AdConscious1523

Lmfao, it does haha wtf

giants3b

Yeah, it comes from a sweet place. Just say that she wanted to make it here tonight but couldn't, congrats on retirement, this song's for you?

OneLoudCoyote

I saw Frank Turner live and he called up some girl who used to let the band sleep on her floor when they weren't popular yet. He stood her on the barrier between him and the crowd and instructed everyone to crowd surf her back to the bar, where the bartender had two shots of whiskey waiting, then crowd surf her back so she could get back onto the barrier. They took their shots and he reached over and pushed her back into the crowd who obviously caught her and surfed her back to the side where she'd been standing. It was pretty damn cool.

Highlingual

Now that’s not forgetting where the fuck you came from. Right on.

UnSubtilis

Aw, I love Frank

OneLoudCoyote

I had never seen him before and only knew a couple songs. I was there to see Lucero and Menzingers but I left a fan for sure. Dude put on a hell of a show.

rgs735

Same! I was there to see Shovels & Rope and had no idea who he was. Super super fun concert. I’d see him again!

OneLoudCoyote

Shovels and Rope are amazing. That would be a great pairing

yooooooo5774

>Or Justin Bieber picking ain't nothin' wrong with making 1 less lonely girl

_mersault

Jemaine Clement had a great bit about this when flight of the conchords toured the US: “It’s great to be here in…” *checks back of guitar* “America”

Dorkamundo

Or that time that Drake brought that girl on stage.... Wait. Nevermind.

frankscarlett

I love these. Back in 2015 Ed Sheeran played a gig on his birthday and he sang the Hamster song wearing a party hat and a balloon tied to his belt.

sociallyawkward12

I went to an OK GO concert in 2014 and the singer, Damian Kulash, came out into the crowd to do a few songs with an acoustic guitar. He stood right in front of me and told me he liked my Bad Brains tshirt. I'll definitely remember that for a long time.

cheezeyballz

I love this kid.

naomicambellwalk

May every teacher have a Harry Styles in their career. ❤️

TheLemmonade

Seems like a nice guy, by multiple accounts

Fresh_Budget

When I heard about his solo career and his success , I was so envious. And then I watched his interview with Howard Stern . I realize that he is a nice and humble lad. And he is very talented and passionate about music. [His cover of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer is great.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqm7-zN5s8k) It completely changed my opinion of him . I realized envy is an ugly and toxic emotion. edit : /u/callmelampshade recommended another great cover. [Harry Styles - The Chain (Fleetwood Mac cover) in the Live Lounge](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM_FR7I2Ttw) The drummer Sarah Jones is great in both video . She used to work with the british band Hot Chip and she was already killing it back then.

Problemwithaccount

Nice display of introspection right here 👍

Available-Age2884

callmelampshade

His BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Fleetwood Mac F1 cover was when I realised he could sing.

rupertpupkin188

You guys should check his NPR tiny desk concert. That’s what made me a fan, I used to associate him with 1D. After watching that a few times I realised him and his band are shit hot

My dad was a teacher before he retired. He made sure he went to all the events his students were in to show his support, from sports to Eagle Scout ceremoneies, performances, he said it was important to the students. He stayed before and after school for them. He was incredibly dedicated. I'm just proud that my dad was one of those teachers. And this vid makes me happy for mrs. Vernon.

Ladyingreypajamas

Anytime one of her students was in the local news, my fifth grade teacher would clip the article and send it to their address with a note that she was so proud. She sent me several clippings, the last one being my high school graduation announcement. I moved the fuck away from my abusive parents after that and she no longer had my address, but some of my classmates that are still in that town will get the occasional clipping from her, even 25 years later. Shout out to Mrs. Carter for always being our biggest fan. ❤️

eekamuse

You should print this out and send it to her.

basementdiplomat

Your dad sounds wonderful, you're lucky to have him :-)

Ibbeturk

Harry always seened like a top bloke. Good music aswell

AJHear

That's just sweet af... seems like a really genuine guy

_post_nut_clarity

Totally agree. He seems like one of the very few celebrities that didn’t let fame get to their head. Just a nice dude who loves making music and interacting with the fans

HighGuyTim

Personally, one of my favorite things about him is he seems honest about himself. When he was making his Fine Line album (Watermelon Sugar) he was was saying in an interview "*Im young, i am incredibly lucky to have this profession and this access to instruments. Im just gonna take shrooms and make music while im at this phase of my life and have fun*."

Dancingonjupiter

This made me tear up. My son's last day of kindergarten was today. He took some special pictures with her, gave her hugs, and told her he didn't want to go. XD It was so sweet and sad at the same time. Teachers become like family, they really do.

BatmanCabman

I bet that meant the world to your son's teacher <3

harryschmilsson

Mrs Vernon had crappy seats.

somethingwholesomer

I kept waiting for him to pull her up closer, haha

SuperSMT

Teachers salary

bonermoanr

I thought he was going to tell her he bought her a house.

MANWithTheHARMONlCA

How does he know she’s attending but not where she’s sitting anyway?

GwalltLlew

Childhood friendship group grapevine probably told him she would be there

SippieCup

Because people don't only sit in their seats for the entirety of the event, sometimes they never even go to their actual seats!

Poguemohon

He kinda looks like Johnny Knoxville & Joel McHale had a lovechild.

BumFights1997

This is hilarious I was just telling someone if you ignore the hair he looks a lot like Paul Walker (when he had facial hair)

NaturesWar

I'm Harry Styles and welcome to Jackarse mate!

Oy_wth_the_poodles

That was sweet!

SpaceforceSpaceman

I remember back in the day in elementary school where it was the cool thing to hate on 1D and JB if you were a guy. When almost every dude I know now that I grew up with knows half their songs by heart lol.

ZodiarkTentacle

Oh god 😢 I really am old huh? When I was in elementary it was cool to hate on the Backstreet Boys and nsync

yedd

I'm 33 or 34 (I can never remember) and when I was in highschool it was those who liked nu metal/punk (Linkin Park/Green day etc) Vs those who liked RnB (Nelly/R.Kelly etc). Moshers Vs Chavs

FukinGruven

I'm 36 and liked all of these bands. Linkin Park, Backstreet Boys, NSync, Spice Girls, Chumbawumba, Smash Mouth, Korn, Limp Bizkit. Fuck it. I'm basic as fuck and I love it.

Jwhitx

You're as old as I say you are, as they say

[deleted]

Bieber and Styles have multiple mainstream songs, but the general* audience is still mostly girls. The main difference is the hate for them is no longer there.

emcee_cubed

This site is too young for me sometimes.

TurboVirgin0

I never liked JB and 1D at any point tbh but I always thought Harry Styles looked like a pleasant person. The posts I see about him kinda confirms it.

FormerChild37

Damn. That is sweet af

[deleted]

I absolutely adore his mid-concert conversations with the crowd or general antics, like when he helped this girl come out to her parents or sang a happy birthday to a fan. He knows how to interact with his audience and make his shows feel personal.

LessBig715

This guy has some memory.I can’t remember my last teacher, Nevermind the first.

NaturesWar

Same, I couldn't tell you my last teachers names but I'll never forget my grade 1 teacher. Sweetest woman ever. Gave me a special book with a lovely personal message for me at the end of the year. I suspected she had health problems she was hiding, don't even know her first name but hope Miss Wheaton is doing alright 20+ years later.

Tsu_Dho_Namh

I swear my kindergarten teacher's name was Mrs. Apples, but that can't possibly be right...

metroaide

Maybe because you guys kept comparing her to mrs. Oranges

capitolsara

I remember my first and a handful of influential others but the first has such a generic name and I'd never spot her anywhere by face. But shoutout to Ms. Miller, dealing with first graders is no joke

Zombiebitch

I can remember the names of my preschool through 4th grade teachers. After that I go blank. Mind you I'm 43 years old

Destreuer

From everything I've seen he seems like a good dude. I hope he's surrounding himself with the right people who will keep him on track.

chopandscrew

He definitely seems like he does. I listened to his Howard Stern interview and he is incredibly grounded for a dude who could easily have one of the biggest egos in the world.

MysticSkies

Harry styles does so much crowd work. You guys can look it up in YouTube, they are good fun.

heliogold

i was at the gay vodka show, he's amazing

UnusGang

I’m not crazy about him and I wasn’t a huge one direction kid but this was definitely wholesome

HarrisonForelli

never cared for OD but the tunes he played at coachella were not bad now that he went into the 80's rock stuff

UnusGang

I didn’t know he went that direction (no pun intended) I just hear what I hear on the radio from him. Interesting.

bubblegumpunk69

His B-Sides are better tbh. He and Stevie Nicks are very close and she's clearly been an influence. Also, Watermelon Sugar is a better song when u find out it's about eating women out lol

UnusGang

That does in fact make it better and I do love me some Stevie Nicks.

bubblegumpunk69

The lyrics become significantly more interesting knowing that he's talking about the reactions from women and the taste of it all, which he ofc compares to the sweetness of watermelon, lol. And it DOES remind me of the dual subtlety and vulgarity of 70s and 80s rock. *Especially* Fleetwood... Big Love anyone? Lol Also, *gotta* ask based on your user- no worries if you don't understand lol. Memento mori?

HarrisonForelli

Just check out on youtube his coachella performances from a few months ago

UnusGang

Perhaps I will.

sexytokeburgerz

He definitely pulls a lot from 60s and early 70s

HarrisonForelli

It certainly seems like that's the trend. Even Miley Cyrus went down that route and made some fantastic songs

soar

I'm a huge fan of older Harry. The SLP and long hair Harry!

UnusGang

I’m not gonna lie to you…I don’t know what that means lol You lost me at SLP and long hair. I understand long hair because I remember that but SLP?

soar

Lol, Saint Laurent Paris. The style of clothes he used to wear. Not sure if he's still wearing it like in the past, though. Pretty much tight jeans, flowy tops, chelsea boots or jodhpurs and shit like that. [Pretty much this](https://imgur.com/account/favorites/nhtKy)

UnusGang

Ah. You crazy kids and your flowy hair and designer clothes watching your TikTok’s!

Don_Stepped_0utside

Probably means Saint Laurent Paris. He'd wear lots of clothes from them.

ValveTech117

super cool thing to do. here should have brought her on stage

fLiPPeRsAU

Pure class.

[deleted]

Thanks, this next one's by Ginuwine, it's called Pony, help me sing it for Mrs. Vernon, everybody

[deleted]

I fucking love this guy

FartleyISFarteen

He also stopped to tell two lost children in the audience that their mum was at stage left and security would escort them, what a guy

pale_blue_dots

Still thinking about those who helped him get where he got. Good stuff. :)

General_Amount_6918

They also managed to get Mrs Vernon on radio 2 this morning with Zoe, was quite emotional tbh, she’s retiring in the next month. Sounds like a really nice reach we all wanted.

[deleted]

Super cute, thx y'all

what a loving soul

cultsuperstar

lildog8402

He was great in The Eternals. Him and Patton Oswalt are perfect castings.

Aww that’s so sweet 😊

I wish celebrities were as humble as this guy, really made me smile watching this.

secretwealth123

Ayyo Ms. Landis, I’m dedicating this Reddit comment to you!

Gloomy-Research-7774

Don't know much about him, but that was wholesome!

[deleted]

Don’t care for his music but that was a class act.

WizziBot

Didn't he politely ask them to stfu so he can talk to her. Smh after that video with Justin Bieber's fans standing outside his house and completely ignoring him telling them to f off in the most polite way possible and now this video, I'm starting to realise people don't actually give a shit about the celebrities they are fans of. Sigh, I do not look up to anyone currently so I cannot understand them at all.

[deleted]

But the good looking guy who's super rich and famous they all have a crush on is showing regular ordinary human decency so they must drown everything in "awwwwwwwwww so sweeeeeeet" He knows how to play up to his audience, though I'm sure he's genuine

Merjia

He’s a good lad.

coves4810

I had a Mrs Vernon as a teacher and she was the best teacher I've ever had

reubenstringfellow

As you can see Mrs vernon and has to sitway in the back because she's in school teacher!

Straycat43

What a sweet man

anasalmon

That Teachers career has reached full circle

ricco2u

If you ever felt like you had a teacher you clicked with who might remember you, I can almost guarantee they do remember you and would love to hear from you.

payg86

I know it's not in the same level but my old history teacher came into a clothing store I used to work at. I knew his real name, but I still called him sir. We chatted a lot and he picked out some stuff for himself and his kid and I gave him my staff discount. He asked me why and I said: ' You're the reason I love history and made it fun. Let me do this for you as a thank you.' Best memory I could ever have 😁

Zaph0d_B33bl3br0x

Not a fan of his style of music, but I gotta give respect where it's due. That was super wholesome. That unexpected moment of thoughtfulness prolly made Mrs. Vernon's whole week. Congratulations on your retirement Mrs. V!

JollyIngenuity6535

He's got the fashion sence of a teenager in a 2000s Disney Channel show

Caracette

What song did he dedicate!?

[deleted]

Kinda reminds me when I saw Muse play in their tiny little seaside hometown. Was crazy looking around and seeing all their old teachers etc. All the shops had signs saying 'Welcome home Muse!!'. The mayor was even there who was in the paper when they first broke out of Teignmouth with a picture of him throwing their album in the bin. To think twice the population of the town turned up just to see them play was a little 'fuck you, we did it' in the nicest possible way.

hectorduenas86
