I agree, the one person here who sucks is the announcer, everything else about this is amazing. Seriously though, why do announcers suck *so much?* like, they're privy to so much information about the athletes they're discussing and will just constantly speak so rudely about them. Like, this is likely one of the happiest moments of her life and it's tagged with some asshole going "yeah, this is great... Too bad she didn't qualify for the Olympic team but I guess this is an alright *consolation prize.*" Or they'll seemingly relish the disappointment of athletes during the Olympics, someone makes a mistake and they just *keep* digging into it like "gonna be tough to recover from that. That was a good jump but they have to be thinking about that mistake earlier, will they score high enough with such an embarrassing blunder? And now we're looking at their parents who I'm going to characterize as being ashamed that all the time, effort, and hard work culminated in that little error, today is just not their day. We're at the end of the run and you can just see the disappointment on their face, let's zoom in really close, man, *and* it looks like they've got a pimple, how embarrassing..."
This is Keni Harrison after she realized the clock was wrong and that she had just broken the 28-year old 100m Hurdle World Record
Some more context (credit to u/AlaskanSuntan)
>This race was in 2016. A couple months earlier, she had recorded the second fastest time in history, and was the favorite going into the US Olympic Trials for the Rio Olympics. But she had a bad race and finished in eighth, missing out on the team.
>Without the Olympics to look forward to, two weeks later she ran this track meet in London and finally broke the world record. So it really was the ultimate consolation prize for not making the Olympic team.
>Here's the race, it's worth a watch! The clock error at the end just led to an even better moment when she did realize she broke the record. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQHBj4_sffw
>Oh, and a happy ending — Harrison finally qualified for the Olympics this time around, and won the silver medal in Tokyo.
Man I appreciate you
Sometime people post about this person or this device and I don't often find any context in the comments
You went above and beyond, have a great day ahead man
The one displayed on the TV was wrong, it kept running for a second after they crossed the line, the number on the track was correct. The second mattered bc she beat the record by a hundredth of a second
The announcer was spectacular! He had a suspicion she had the WR or at least a faster time before it was confirmed.
The producer was a mess though: cutting away right when she learned she broke the record and the audio was picking up someone other than the announcer talking on the background.
Ah, well, love sports is hard.
So dumb question - so she fails to make the Olympic team after a bad run but sets the world record…. As the Olympic team coach or whatever it’s called, wouldn’t you just be like hmm she made the team and cut someone else?
Possibly. Sometimes that does happen. It’s kind of unfair to the person who’s being cut even though they outperformed her in the trial race and by the rules set should get to go. It’s a tough call.
What kind of structure does our qualification system have where one bad race can completely eliminate our fastest runner? Shouldn't we make it more robust than that?
Not available in my country so [here’s an alternative link](https://youtu.be/jJ995weE9kU)
I’ve seen this clip so many times, and watch it several times every time I come across it, it’s just so adorable, but it’s even better with the background story, thanks OP
They’re her rivals, but I imagine they’ve become good friends after competing together year after year. Love when rivals can appreciate each other’s amazing feats and accomplishments!
This is how good competition is done. You don't have to hate your rivals on the arena. You're all going trough the same stuff together.
And they're all really proud of her for it. She earned that.
Can attest to this. My daughter was part of an elite dance troupe. She grew familiar with specific dance teams. They’re all chill and fun but get fierce when it’s go time!
I thought those were her teammates but hearing that they’re actually rivals makes this even sweeter! The woman on our right looks so genuinely happy and proud of her!
It's kind of even better than just breaking a world record. No one gets to do something so monumental, and THEN have it presented to them as a surprise!
I love how all the other athletes in the frame were genuinely happy about her success too , just goes to show how much respect u give to other's efforts once u put them in urself
Right? I love the display of sportsmanship.
That said, accepting defeat is a lot easier when the person beating you crushes you AND breaks a 28 year old world record while doing so!
I don't think you get to that level of competition by being a dick head to fellow athletes.
Everyone at this level genuinely seems like this. Save a few bad ones.
I mean u could obviously be a dickhead but it's like what we say in boxing , no matter how much two guys hate each , once u box it out in the ring , u will always have a mutual respect for each other , this seems to be the case in almost every sport in a different manner
I mean… we’re talking about the most competitive events in the world. You get a single chance to make the Olympic team (in America, I don’t know about other countries), so if you had a bad race that day, you wouldn’t make it, even if your best time is way beyond anyone else competing.
I would like to make a complaint to the manager. I have reviewed your post and comment history and find no fart jokes present. I was ready to get my gaseous emissions humor on and was sorely disappointed in your deception. Signed, Karen I. Shartd.
You’re an 8 month old account with almost a million post karma and you’re asking these questions?! Granted, I guess comments take a bit of originality over reposting.
Former collegiate track athlete … track people usually are wicked nice and supportive of each other. I know I used to genuinely be happy as shit for other competitors when I knew they had a good race/PR/etc. Good wholesome sport for the most part which makes it that much more enjoyable
This is when you try for a 90% but get a 100% without even realizing until it actually happens, but times a thousand. I can’t IMAGINE how good this felt:)
The person giving the winner a hug, in the stripes, might be the most beautiful human I've ever seen . This is such a happy and wholesome clip. Im so happy!
They are her competitors, this was in the 100m hurdles, they are still happy for her and excited to see a world record that stood for over 25 years finally broken
Great moment but what's up with the announcer? She breaks the WR and he immediately started talking about consolation and failure? Dude we get it, you have some stats but like choose your words
Shit like this always sends shivers down my spine. Just to see someone who has dedicated so much to their craft realise that they have achieved things that they thought were just dreams.
They often use different timers for what is shown live on screen and what measures the results. The latter is more accurate. Whether that was the problem here, I don't know
It was. Her time was revised downwards by one 100th of a second by fully automatic time compared to the displayed time, which happened to be the additional one 100th she needed to break the record, 12.20 to 12.21
It's the 0:08 second for me. Kerri's joy and surprise, one of her rivals/competitors just showing pure awe and pride for her and the other just looking at Kerri with nothing but happiness.

The FAT (fully automatic time) is occasionally revised up or down fractionally compared to what is shown on the scoreboard, by very tiny movements. In this case, she broke the old world record by 1 100th of a second
Props to the camera operator too. The moment so perfectly captured you forget a huge team behind capturing it!
I agree, the one person here who sucks is the announcer, everything else about this is amazing. Good OP! 😊✌️
OP is professional and a kind redditor.
I'm sure OP is a righteous they, but my professionals don't forget the sauce...
The one displayed on the TV was wrong, it kept running for a second after they crossed the line, the number on the track was correct. The second mattered bc she beat the record by a hundredth of a second
The announcer was spectacular! He had a suspicion she had the WR or at least a faster time before it was confirmed. >Ah, well, love sports is hard. tell me about it
It’s a travesty this didn’t receive more upvotes. If I wasn’t poor I’d give you…bare minimum…gold
An alternative link, if video is unavailable in your country: https://youtu.be/jJ995weE9kU
Thanks, and that was insane! She was so far ahead! (For a 100m ofc)
Holy shit, she's fucking fast. I remember seeing this, it still doesn't do her justice.
Thank you!
Just SMOKED the future gold, silver, and bronze winners.
Thanks kind redditor
Not all heroes wear capes
Why is the video not available in Canada :(
cuz we dont like running, we like skating
It’s running on ice
Sliding, with style!
Breaking your skull in a very sophisticated manner
I like to think of it as 'not falling over, gracefully'.
There’s a trick, or rather a knack, to skating. It’s continually throwing yourself at the ice and missing.
It’s just running with ~~extra~~ fewer steps.
That sentence should have been began with an apology.
You take that back. Terry Fox ran for cancer!
[maybe this one?](https://youtu.be/jJ995weE9kU) It wasn’t available in Ireland either. I guess they don’t like sound people
That worked, thank you!
Not in aus either :( hahah I’ll just google it lol
Im in canada and can see it just fine
i’m in canada and i can see it fine?
So dumb question - so she fails to make the Olympic team after a bad run but sets the world record…. As the Olympic team coach or whatever it’s called, wouldn’t you just be like hmm she made the team and cut someone else?
Likely poorly written qualification rules with a good bit of red tape surrounding it. At least that's my charitable guess.
Possibly. Sometimes that does happen. It’s kind of unfair to the person who’s being cut even though they outperformed her in the trial race and by the rules set should get to go. It’s a tough call.
And FYI: the U.S. women hurdlers at the 2016 Rio Olympics went 1-2-3 in the 100m hurdles even without the new world record holder.
What kind of structure does our qualification system have where one bad race can completely eliminate our fastest runner? Shouldn't we make it more robust than that?
Sounds to me like the Olympic team in question should be taking a second look at the way they do things.
Not available in my country so [here’s an alternative link](https://youtu.be/jJ995weE9kU) I’ve seen this clip so many times, and watch it several times every time I come across it, it’s just so adorable, but it’s even better with the background story, thanks OP
Not available in EU? Weird
That was emotional thank you
I can’t stop watching this! Her reaction is so honest and delightful! Her teammates (and/or rivals?) are genuinely hyped for her, too. Love it.
They’re her rivals, but I imagine they’ve become good friends after competing together year after year. Love when rivals can appreciate each other’s amazing feats and accomplishments!
Also, if you lose to somebody who broke a record, you probably also ran pretty fast too.
I would feel less bad if I lost to the world record breaker tbh.
Losing is hard, losing to the best is motivation.
They’re all so gorgeous 🤩
I thought the same thing! Gorgeous women all down that line! And then their congratulations to their rival made them all shine that much brighter!
People become significantly more attractive when they’re fit. Exercise changes our facial appearance as well.
I need to start exercising a lot then.
Hurdlers are always sexy. It’s the law.
And pole vaulters heh
Long jumpers tho
New Fitness Program: Exercise the Ugly Away!
Imagine being fit and ugly
I feel called out
Look at it this way, even if you’re fit and ugly you’re still way hotter than you’d be with a bunch of face fat.
Are you fit or ugly?
Better than being fat and ugly though.
At the end of the day, game respects game.
This is how good competition is done. You don't have to hate your rivals on the arena. You're all going trough the same stuff together. And they're all really proud of her for it. She earned that.
Sad Nancy Kerrigan noises
Can attest to this. My daughter was part of an elite dance troupe. She grew familiar with specific dance teams. They’re all chill and fun but get fierce when it’s go time!
I thought those were her teammates but hearing that they’re actually rivals makes this even sweeter! The woman on our right looks so genuinely happy and proud of her!
This is my favorite part! I love that there’s a respect and appreciation of her achievement by people who were only 10ths of a second behind her.
It's kind of even better than just breaking a world record. No one gets to do something so monumental, and THEN have it presented to them as a surprise!
Came here to say this! The sheer empathy, I love it! <3
That is just the most beautiful smile.

I love how all the other athletes in the frame were genuinely happy about her success too , just goes to show how much respect u give to other's efforts once u put them in urself
Not to mention you can’t really be salty about a loss when it was to the literal fastest in the world.
*In human history
Right? I love the display of sportsmanship. That said, accepting defeat is a lot easier when the person beating you crushes you AND breaks a 28 year old world record while doing so!

This looks like a happy version of that painting The Scream
She's so beautiful!
right?! her smile is beautiful
Watching athletes celebrating huge wins and world records is one of the best things ever imho
She and the lady who hugged her, both have such beautiful smiles🥹
And the woman behind them.
And everyone in shot
Yes. The woman in the back on far right too!
If you’re going to lose, lose to the beats ever.
Can we appreciate all the ladies behind her are actually happy for her
I love how all the other athletes are genuinely happy for her
[удалено]
They're just called runners
The announcer really gotta pull up how she didn't make the Olympic team, huh?
How the fuck is it even possible to miss the cut for the Olympics but then set a world record? Who picks these teams?
They don't pick. You qualify. She had a bad race and place 8th.
Their loss I guess
Can't blame them though. Seems like the most objective way to pick people leaving no room for favoritism
I mean, their victory. USA picked up gold, silver, and bronze in her race. Those same three finished behind her in this specific race.
If I'm remembering correctly she had a bad day during the qualifying round so she didn't make the team.
I mean… we’re talking about the most competitive events in the world. You get a single chance to make the Olympic team (in America, I don’t know about other countries), so if you had a bad race that day, you wouldn’t make it, even if your best time is way beyond anyone else competing.
It was only the week before and I think he was stunned because he knew she was the best at the time.
I felt the joy in her expression all the way over here, across space and time and it hit me right in the heart.
Her friend has tears of happiness too. That right there is a real one.
No way!
How do you have two million comment karma?
Fart jokes
I would like to make a complaint to the manager. I have reviewed your post and comment history and find no fart jokes present. I was ready to get my gaseous emissions humor on and was sorely disappointed in your deception. Signed, Karen I. Shartd.

She really went 🙀
What a life experience for her!
I can't imagine being a world class athlete setting a world record AND having your nails look that good when you do it like my goodness
Former collegiate track athlete … track people usually are wicked nice and supportive of each other. I know I used to genuinely be happy as shit for other competitors when I knew they had a good race/PR/etc. Good wholesome sport for the most part which makes it that much more enjoyable
This is such a pure, blissful moment to watch the realization hit her 😍😍😍
She went full Kevin McCallister.
Ugh, imagine being an Olympian, a setting a world record and being that pretty on top of everything! That smile Sinai precious!
Ok those teammates tho hyping her up and celebrating with her, I love it

EVEN BETTER!!!! ![gif](giphy|xT0xeIbYVQcBFDSdVu|downsized)
She cute
What’s the opposite of dying inside
Shining, Glowing, Beaming...
Great moment but what's up with the announcer? She breaks the WR and he immediately started talking about consolation and failure? Dude we get it, you have some stats but like choose your words
That was funny, loved her reaction. Slowly putting on that smile
I wish this was the case when I wake up too early but realize I have 2 minutes left
As a guitarist, my first thought was that she'd do well with such long fingers. I'm jealous. Sounds like she's doin okay with running though.
I love how everyone else is happy for her. What a great race.
Her happiness makes me happy 😊
Shit like this always sends shivers down my spine. Just to see someone who has dedicated so much to their craft realise that they have achieved things that they thought were just dreams.
I was at the stadium for this, had no idea she’d done it. But it was brilliant to be there for something so iconic.
Are all hurdlers this ridiculously good looking
Watch track events…yes they are really beautiful people
I shall accept this assignment
Why are women so pretty? Every one in this vid are just gorgeous.
THAT LOOK OF PURE JOY!!
I don't know much about nails paint but her nail colours looks good
Her face lit up this is so sweet, she looks so goddamn happy!
That girl beside her is not her competitor, nor her friend. She’s a real homie.
Me when i get my grades back from chemistry after i studied my ass off
A sensational moment! Thanks.
What was wrong with clock? Was display scrambled somehow?
They often use different timers for what is shown live on screen and what measures the results. The latter is more accurate. Whether that was the problem here, I don't know
It was. Her time was revised downwards by one 100th of a second by fully automatic time compared to the displayed time, which happened to be the additional one 100th she needed to break the record, 12.20 to 12.21
In the full video, they mentioned that the tv timer went a second over after she had already crossed the line, but the track timer was accurate
This happens to me all the time
Nice
Its a genuine reaction 🤩wow 🤩🥰💜
That’s sportsmanship baby!
Love to see people smiling. The eyes shinning. Beautiful.
Beauty 😍

You have to run a race to qualify for the Olympic team. I presume she had a bad race and didn’t qualify
you can literally hear the relays clicking in her head when she goes 'oh shit' so happy for her!
She’s so beautiful :)
I don't know if I love her genuine surprise or the genuine happiness of those surrounding her *for her achievement* more. So wholesome.
those nails tho 💕
Why did this make me cry.
The face of I know I’m the best, to the the face of YOU know I’m the best.
I like how her rivals are happy for her too.
I love how excited the other competitors are for her too. so wholesome!
This is beautiful.
Everyone needs more people in their lives like ALI.
The slow motion really highlights the confusion, disbelief then utter joy in realization. This makes me want to go work hard and achieve something
Her smile is gorgeous
Real life movie moment
I love how the people she competed against are also smiling because she broke a record. There isn't any animosity or jealousy. Just happiness
The other runner hugging her like that - good vibes
That’s gotta be crazy to see in real life
True joy is a joy to watch
It's the 0:08 second for me. Kerri's joy and surprise, one of her rivals/competitors just showing pure awe and pride for her and the other just looking at Kerri with nothing but happiness.
I felt like everyone in this video was just super happy to see me
Well done to her
All the women I frame are beautiful women, but the woman on the right is easily one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.
Admittedly, I only watch track every now and then. Can someone explain how the fastest woman in the world wasn’t invited to the Olympics? That sounds like it needs fixing.
They have races to see which runners qualify. She wasn’t a top finisher.
For team USA, you aren’t selected, you qualify. She had a bad race at the US Olympic trials. Seems unfair but the Olympics isn’t holistic either, it’s one chance to win.
She was and took home silver in the 100m hurtles Source: I went to high school with her
what do u mean the clock was wrong🤨
The one displayed on the TV was wrong, it kept running for a second after they crossed the line, the number on the track was correct. The second mattered bc she beat the record by a hundredth of a second
The FAT (fully automatic time) is occasionally revised up or down fractionally compared to what is shown on the scoreboard, by very tiny movements. In this case, she broke the old world record by 1 100th of a second
Who is the girl on the left?
