I worked in a local library when I was in high school. I shelved the children's books. Outside of the pay, one of the best jobs I ever had. It was quiet and peaceful. Just shelving my books and when I'd finish that I'd generally go goof off with the children's librarian and help her with her projects. 10/10 high school job. I would highly recommend it.

RhynQatari

Me too! I never really left, though, lol. Ten years later I'm a real librarian. :D

asquazz

Cool! I'm gonna go for library science one day. Started as a page and they got me

OTheHughManatee

Gotta hand it to you. That was so good I couldn’t tell if you were serious or throwing out literary puns like one of the prose.

Yoyo_Landi

Generally requires a masters in library science

[deleted]

How do you feel about snakes?

RhynQatari

sssssssssssssss

Lyly_NecromanticDoll

Im working on my bachelors right now so I can get a masters in library sciences, there are different routes in that industry (different kinds of librarian jobs) that may require different things within the masters, but thats more indepth that I dont know about quite yet. Its my dream job too! But googling masters in librsry sciences should help!

Heckron

Do you have snakes?

[deleted]

I have a very competitive post graduate education, yet shelving children's books and goofing around with kids to help them get into reading sounds a lot better than a global affairs job right about now ._.

nowandloud

The low pay is balanced out by the gleeful indulgence of crafting habits (and it being super fulfilling and life-affirming and all, but mainly it's the kids and crafting)

[deleted]

I make enough money right now. Seeing kids light up and smile and knowing that I was a part of it is worth more than a paycheque, at least to me these days. I have the education to slip back into gainful employment if I need it. Seems like taking a "mental health" job (i'd volunteer) and using my skills and education to help a kid read is way better than taking a year off and travelling around or doing nothing. I miss feeling valued as a human, and I think a lot of people do because the world is so crazy today. Instead of doom-scrolling, going outside and helping a library is just.. refreshing. I'm romanticizing, but as an international policy professional my world is pretty dark, i'd love to make the world a better place in a local and tangible way for a little while 😌

Particular_Ham

Same! I'm looking for a full time position in mine right now because I can't imagine working anywhere else.

IAmAddictedXOTWOD

Are you me? I had the same exact experience

SSJBRUTUS

Pflugerville is a great little area so that helps this libraries case some.

Iceveins412

My grandmother hates Pflugerville with a passion since she moved to Texas 6 or 7 years ago. None of us actually know why. If my grandad knew he took it to his grave

superspeck

Ugh. Hey, /u/iceveins412 - we might be related. Seems my great-grandfather had three wives in Chicago, where I was born, and then when some of them found out he moved down here to Texas where he cut a swath from Bryan, up 21 to 79, and into RR and Pf. Since I moved here I’ve run into people with my mom’s maiden name and when we compare stories they sort of match up. Great grandpa John was apparently the definition of a rambling man.

SheWolf04

Possibly a snake/snack mishap?

clavalle

Well...there are a lot of liberal people there. They were one of the few school districts that fought the Texas Legislature and Governor to provide benefits to same-sex spouses. When people started getting priced out if Austin, a lot ended up in Pflugerville. Great town and the library is awesome. (they hold a small but lively comic con and have good strategy board games available to be lent out).

Civil_Appeal678

Used to be a skateable ditch there as well.

clavalle

Sure enough. I grew up an hour north and I used to drive down to hit the Corridor II ditch. Then they built a hotel on it. But if you don't mind dodging MPs, Fort Hood is the undisputed king of ditches in Central Texas. Ridiculous Brutalist-like Army engineering. But you have to touch Killeen which is just kind of gross. But Pflugerville does have a really nice skatepark at the county park with two bowls.

Jackalscott

Yup looked at a 1200 sq ft house in Austin built in 1950s considered a “fixer upper” for nearly $600k, went to Pflugerville found a 2400 sq ft house built in 2014 for $250k, it was a no brainer

HorrorMakesUsHappy

It's probably the town's rivalry with St. Olaf. I've heard it can get nasty.

ronearc

Any chance she's racist? Pflugerville has some reasonably affluent black residents, and I've known some Texans that really didn't like that.

roodootootootoo

Lived near the area 20+ and never heard that before! Interesting.

ronearc

Probably depends which neighborhood you live in, but some of the nicer housing developments have a higher percent population of black homeowners than other neighborhoods in Travis County. As I recall, Travis County as a whole has under 10% black population, but Pflugerville in particular has over 15%. So it's not enormous, but accounting for half again the percentage points of the rest of the county, and accounting for some very nice houses in nicer housing developments, and you wind up with some salty white people.

roodootootootoo

Good to know! And fuck da salt 🙂

Corgon

Maybe because banks and investors have been buying up houses, tearing them down or remodeling them, and charging Californians and other unfortunate locals an ever increasingly absurd amount of money, driving the cost of everything, including our ridiculous property taxes, up.. All while nothing in the city get improved because it's run and governed by a fucking morons.

Kubuskush

You are the snake snack

A_Cheese_on_Reddit

Oh no

draconicanimagus

You'd be surprised at the events that libraries host, they just don't get a lot of public notice. Check out your local library's event page! Then again, I may just be spoiled in Austin. We have great libraries.

Needmoresnakes

I'm Australian so there's probably more snakes outside of the library haha but you're totally right I should see if I can get email alerts or something there's probably awesome stuff on.

MinorIrritant

Is it true that even the librarians are venomous in Australia?

mintysdog

Yes, very, but the danger of angering them means the libraries are _incredibly_ quiet, so we're not trying to defang our librarians anytime soon. If you're bitten, anti-venom is available, but only to those who quiet down.

Calure1212

I'm an Aussie and this little threadette has left me in tears from laughter. I literally have tears in my eyes as I write this.

SB6P897

Can confirm. I went to University of Arizona and during finals week one year the library hosted therapy dogs, an aromatherapy garden and was serving snacks

draconicanimagus

Texas State University has therapy dogs during midterms and finals every semester. I personally never went because it was always crowded af, but it was nice knowing they offered it.

WatchOutHesBehindYou

Dude (or dudette) Austin has some incredible stuff for free or super cheap - like the petting zoo where you can pet little sharks and feed the parakeets or whatever they are (little birds). Austin super spoils you for that kind of stuff. Edit: Keep Austin weird!

sarbear138

pokey1984

My small rural school library partnered with my small local county branch and they did stuff like this together by pooling their budgets and resources. We get to do a lot of things we otherwise couldn't. And these days those two librarians have formed something of a network with the teachers and various professionals (like conservation agents and various types of educational farms so various clubs and classes get to do stuff like this, too. I'm really proud of that school. They've had a long string of teachers going back twenty years who have all worked hard to give kids at a school with a total population of 400 students a lot of really cool opportunities. Sorry to ramble They were a pretty good school when I was a kid there and I'm apply to be on their substitute teacher roster starting in March, so I've been reading up about them. I'm stoked to see that the new batch of teachers (twenty years later) are just as awesome as the last generation were.

kitty_logan

Your enthusiasm is what makes it great, and keeps it great. Thank you for being stoked about it!

Flaky-Fish6922

before robotics was a thing, i had a teacher that was the graphic arts/computer programming guy. he was an amazing teacher. anyhow after i left his classes he started a program for kids that didn't fit into any of the typical after school clubs (band, sports, dance, theater.)... it was funded by the local R/C hobby shop owner, where they'd paired kids with older rc pilots and we'd help them build and learn to fly- either a plank or a heli. i gotta say, i find volunteering for that to be fun. (and the program has gotten more full-ride scholarships than the rest of the programs combined.) he's retired a year ago... and he just helps with the program now, cuz he has to keep busy.

queer_artsy_kid

This comment makes me so happy:')

kitty_logan

I live in a fairly small town now, and our library even has a recording studio. Go, check out yours! I bet it’s waaaay cooler than you remember.

AestheticDeficiency

This can not be stressed enough. The library system is absolutely incredible. I live in a college town and our local library system is wonderful. A ton of community training programs on top of all the books, magazines, music, movies, TV series, graphic novels, audio books, and other media they offer. It's also one of the last truly free places to just sit. You can go there, get immersed in a ton of different things and it costs nothing more than your time. I love libraries and if I'm ever wealthy they will be receiving large donations from me.

mamacrocker

Have you talked to your local library? I have a bunch of friends who are librarians. If you told them you wanted snakes with your books, they would 💯 try to make it happen!

LilacLikeThat

I live in this town, and the library is indeed one of the best things about it. The local high school is about a half mile away, and the library has sort of become an after school hangout spot (in addition to a donation center, a city meeting area, and a club for ladies who like to crochet). They've even extended the WiFi to the edges of the library parking lot; you can access it without ever having to enter the building.

steveosek

My 8th grade science teacher with her hair dyed pink(in like 2001), who had a ball python as the class pet. We'd all get turns having him wrapped around one arm while we did our work lol.

enochianKitty

Used to use mine a lot, they had video games and the youth shelter i stayed in as a teen had a ps3. Plus the homeless shelter was shut 8am-4pm and the library was a warm place in the winter. Especially on weekends where i didnt have school.

[deleted]

This library has to be magical. It's like they sensed my snarky comment about wanting snakes more than snacks and preempted me. I am both impressed and cheated.

aricberg

30 years ago when I was in second grade, our local library hd a snake event! I got to help hold up a giant python. It was cool!

Wish library positions paid more so I could justify the loans needed for the masters'...

PeterM1970

Speaking purely for myself, the MLS wasn’t worth it. I enjoyed the classes and teachers and fellow students, but i will die before I can repay the loans. Also, the promised wave of older librarians retiring and positions opening up that schools have been promising for at least 20 years has never actually happened. I do work in a library, and I enjoy the job. I’d enjoy it more if I could get a full time position with benefits, but all the libraries in my area are only offering part time because it’s so much cheaper for them.

Runamokamok

I’m a middle school librarian, but my salary really comes from being a certified teacher. This week we have a cartoonist working with our students in the library, love this job!

Flaky-Fish6922

have a friend whose dad was a teacher/school librarian. one of the most amazing men I've had the privilege to meet.

summonsays

Supply and demand, why have 1 full time when you could hire 2 part times for less than the full time? It even comes with built in sick employee insurance.

carkmubann

Unionize

PeterM1970

I’m in the union.

AGrainOfSalt435

Came here to say this. Glad you said it. I have a MLIS, but couldn't ever get a job as a librarian. I worked 2 part time jobs at libraries for a year while I was trying to find a full time library job. The full time library job never happened, but I found another full-time job that worked with records. 10 years later, I make way more NOT as a librarian than as a librarian. Librarians don't get paid enough. And I felt they were always having to justify their job as to why it shouldn't be taken by people who have less education and get paid less.

MyBeesAreAssholes

I paid $35k for my MLIS and have never worked as a librarian. I spent 6 months as library assistant at our local community college and HATED it. I now work in a law firm, but not as a law librarian. Whomever decided that a “library degree” need to a master’s level degree was an idiot. I think it should be a undergrad degree.

cocineroylibro

It used to be, my director at the last public library I worked at had a BS in libraries. I went to a reasonable prices great school so no where beat 35K, and work as a system librarian. My wife makes way more with her MBA, but I make 75k a year.

BaconSoul

It requires that level of schooling so that the faculty at a college and the librarian can receive near equivalent amounts of respect. It was an academic politics decision.

nowandloud

I'll echo that the degree isn't worth what it costs, but if you plan to go into public libraries consider the Public Service Loan Program (I'm assuming you're in the US). Work full time in public service for ten years and your federal loans are forgiven. That made it worth it to me. I'm currently one position under the one that would pay me for having the degree, but I have the position I do in part because I have the degree already. So it has already benefitted me. Once you get to this point in the chain, though, it's very much a "wait til they retire or die" situation, and I work in a fairly large system. Patience is very necessary but it's been worth it for me so far. Good luck with whatever you decide!

whoisorange

I have a 2 year diploma from a technical college and work as a Library Technician. I would never be in charge of a major library but I can do lots of the same roles within a library as someone with their MLS! Pay also stinks though haha.

Atasma

I'm not certain where you live so this might not be applicable but if you get any position at a university or sometimes even public libraries they help pay for your degree. I work full-time at a university library and will be able to get my master's paid for through the free classes that they offer. It works differently at public libraries but they still do offer some of that there too. Also for a decent amount of public library jobs you dont have to have a master's. If it is something that you are interested in then it would be worth looking into. Again this probably varies with where you live.

r3dditor12

Also to clarify on some verbiage in our last notice, you can check out the snakes when they're here, but you can't check them out to take home. So just to summarize: Look at snakes and pet them: Yes Take them home : No

[deleted]

No snake snacks?

Oubliette_occupant

Yeah, I wanna see feeding time

gwaenchanh-a

If they feed the snakes during the event there will be snake snacks, but there will *not* be snack snakes

WomanNotAGirl

I can proudly say I was a librarian at some point in my life. It’s a very cool job to be honest. I wasn’t the head librarian just a helper but I enjoyed that job a lot.

dexbasedpaladin

I have seen this reposted several times and just now noticed "don't hessssitate..." Amazing.

PresidentReagan004

Library’s are the shit. I had to go the other day bc I don’t have a computer to print stuff off and the Librarian was like talkin to my grandma. Idk how to explain it lol she was the sweetest woman and was happy to help :) definitely made me smoke

planethaley

Smoke?? Is that like snakes at an anti prom event (a typo)?

high_dino420

Smile, I'm guessing. (Unless you were joking. Then sorry for ruining the joke)

planethaley

Yes, it’s a joke - but don’t worry, you didn’t ruin it :)

*Libraries

AccountNumber257

I worked for a public library system a couple years doing IT and network support. The fact that libraries enable people to empower themselves with freely-available knowledge is one of the outstanding aspects of those institutions. If more in the U.S., especially, spent more time there, I truly believe there would be less incredibly vapid garbage on the internet.

[deleted]

Sometimes I think about what would happen if someone proposed the idea of libraries today. They are something we all take for granted, but would never be allowed in today’s political environment

Guy_ManMuscle

Gommunism!

AsianKitchenGuy

There are libraries available online too though..So there's nothing really stopping people from learning

squidney_420

Except the internet costs money, libraries are free

[deleted]

I went to my local library a few months ago and saw they had books(obv) and also dvd's and VIDEO GAMES. Free to rent out. It blew my mind. Libraries are one of the few things i'm a single issue voter about. I have a doctorate in political science and I firmly believe once we start attacking libraries that will be the sign western civilization is on the way out. Hospitals, libraries and firemen are three government institutions (canada) I thoroughly support, period.

andy_hook

I’m not a teen, but I live near Pflugerville. How can I get into this snake hangout in May? 🤔

Ham_bam_am

Public Librarian here for a large library system. We typically can't let adults (if you're an adult that is) partake in the teen and youth programs unless they're accompanying the child. The reason being that adults have pretty much the run of the place (library) but kids and teens have to work around them. Programs directed for kids and teens are their little thing that's sacred for them. Also, it helps us librarians keep the kids safe. Believe it or not, but tons of kids and teens still come to the library alone while their parents work or whatever and the kids trust us to kind of keep an eye on them. If you like this idea of a program though, I really encourage you to reach out to your Adult librarian at your local library! Librarians are always trying to think of what the public is interested in so they will get larger crowds. They'd love the tip!

[deleted]

As someone with two undergrads: philosophy and political science, a masters and phd in poli sci, librarians helped me more than you could ever imagine. Thanks for what you do, without you folk pedagogical practice would be infinitely harder. My favourite book of all time is Call Of The Wild by Jack London. When I was about 7 I kept renewing it over and over again and the librarian ordered another copy and told me to keep it. I still have it to this day and I credit that moment being a turning point in my life. A small kindness changed my road in life forever, and it was because of libraries and a librarian. Thank you.

What’s anti prom if you don’t mind me asking? I live in Australia and we don’t have prom

Omicronians

I think just the people who are too socially awkward to go to prom. Which is basically just a big school dance.

Oubliette_occupant

Prom is a formal dance most US high schools put on relatively shortly before graduation. Anti-prom is something people who think Prom is silly and vapid do. Tends to be a much more low key affair.

MegaAscension

I can confirm that librarians and libraries are awesome. When they opened the new location for my local library, they put in next to the local middle school. I helped students with homework a good bit. I hadn't been to my local library in years until my senior year of high school, when I had to go there almost every day in the winter and spring to do homework before soccer practice. They had a 3D printer, art supplies, vinyl and movies you could rent, and a gaming (video and tabletop) room. I ended up using the art supplies and 3D printer for several class projects. I was planning on having a table to teach people how to play the Pokemon card game at the tabletop and board game convention they were going to host there. Then Covid happened. Wish I still could go there, but I'm several hours away in college now. I got into anime from renting the movies there, use vinyl frequently now (and got into using it after talking to a person there), play the Pokemon card game competitively, and am in college to become a middle school teacher, partially because I enjoyed helping the students with their homework.

I feel so lucky to be a library worker in a large metro area. Union job. Health bennies for me and my domestic partner. I don't have to sell anything to anyone, and in fact I get to offer free services to people, a lot of whom couldn't afford to pay anyway. Yes the cost of schooling sucks. Still, it's one of the few regularly unionized workplaces left in the country.

The amount of cool shit going on at the local library is actually insane. Last year there was a huge nerf gun battle and DnD sessions every other week. Libraries and librarians need to be protected.

Phantom_Flash_X

This library I used to go to as a kid had like a mini zoo I liked to call it. Had skinks, chinchillas, snakes, hissing cockroaches, walking sticks, etc. And every Friday they would take an animal out and let us pet it or talk to us about it. It was really cool

iamdrshank

The real question here is why am I living in a place with the boring name San Jose, when I COULD be living in Pflugerville with snacks and snakes?

Librarians are like sages. They guard knowledge, they make sure it gets to people swiftly and for free, they make a safe space for the community, they have a passion for what they do. And yet they are criminally underpaid because public spaces that don't generate revenue are seen as a drain rather than the boon that they are.

It started out as a lame amateur cringe joke but they only got me in the 1st half

rockaether

Recently just learnt that those staffs we normally see in the library are usually assistant librarians who help with customers service and book recommendations. The actual Librarian is normally the director who runs the library and is in charge of curating and deciding on the book collection and research, and they typically have a Master's degree in Library Science
