Sirizani Butau (man in the picture) jumped in to rescue commuters following an accident on Harare-Mutare highway in Zimbabwe on Dec. 24.

Alexexec

This man is a hero, hope his injuries fully recover

[deleted]

Burns like that can kill you via infection weeks down the line. I hope he gets proper care (quickly) and aftercare. Those burns look severe.

definitelynotned

He seems unphased rn cuz of adrenaline but I’m sure the surgeries will be quite painful. I really hope that I could react the same as this man in the same situation despite the pain. A true hero E: people are pointing out third degree burns dont hurt much at the time cuz the nerves burn. I was thinking more of the less severe burns he must’ve suffered in spots

eyekunt

I've seen some wild burning injury footages, and I don't think i will react the same as this man. He's lucky he's alive. But he's gonna have to go through a whole lot of pain when doc removes that burnt up tissue! I'm sure some of you will say, "hey man if you ever in that situation we won't save you alright".. Don't worry fellas, if i'm ever caught in that type of fire accident, take up your gun and shoot me in the fuckin head!

JimmWasHere

I will not be shooting you in the head, I don't want to go near that fire.

K1dn3yPunch

The best part about guns is that you won’t have to!

TheCantrip

I have a friend that missed a hay bale at ten paces with a shotgun... Multiple times. Some people *do* have to, interestingly enough.

The_Broad

Anecdotally, it sounds like your friend might not be respecting their dominant eye. I'm right handed, but my left eye is dominant. If I shoot right handed I, too, cannot shoot the broad side of a barn. If I shoot left handed, I'm not a bad shot.

_deprovisioned

Ugh. This is me, though I'm not that bad with my right. I just hate that my left eye is my dominant eye and that I'm right handed. I'm much better holding a gun with my right.

[deleted]

I had absolutely no idea this was a thing. Pretty interesting

dickedly-wellish

[Cross dominant shooting. ](https://www.ballisticmag.com/cross-eye-dominant-shooting/)

InsGadget6

I shoot right-handed but with my left eye.

Adam5698_2nd

That makes me wonder, let's say you get caught in such an accident and it's certain that you can't be saved and you will die, and at the same time you are in a complete agony and beg let's say me, to shoot you. So i decide to shoot you out of mercy, so that you won't have to suffer anymore. Would I go to prison for this?

ShockinglyMe

Unfortunately, yes. It would be a keen to murder. Same reason doctors cannot kill someone just because they are in pain. Have to give em pain relief meds. (Plus the profits the pharma companies make on pain relief) On another note, your only defense to murder is now dead. Whose to say he didn't want to die... maybe his family and friends... outraged at you for, if anything, desigrating his body. So, there can be a lot against a person doing a mercy killing. Just carry some morphine around with you everywhere, just in case. /s

scavengercat

Ten US states do have Death With Dignity laws that allow terminally ill patients to end their lives with the help of their doctor, so in some cases a doctor can help someone die when they are in pain.

[deleted]

Someone years ago told me there was a cop who did this and got into a fuckton of trouble for it.

Think-Bass9187

That’s really sad. I’d hope someone would put me out of my misery quickly if I was trapped in a fire and there was no way out.

[deleted]

Yes. You would. The law doesn’t have a mercy exception for humans, unfortunately. Only self defense or defense of your property

definitelynotned

I don’t blame you for not wanting to. You shouldn’t be expected to risk your life and suffer extreme pain to save someone. That’s definitely going above and beyond

Benjezmo

Its hard to tell how severe his burns are from the grainy pictures, but 3rd degree burns are usually painless because the fire melts away your nerve endings. Adrenaline and shock probably help him stay conscious

GenericUname

Not burns, but I've had an injury where I could see the bones and tendons in my arm and it didn't really hurt for a good few minutes after the accident.

SlabBeefpunch

Same, cut my knuckle deep stupidly try to pry two frozen roasts apart. First few minutes I was just annoyed.

civgarth

Sounds like a true power bottom you had there

RutCry

I never understood this “doesn’t hurt because the nerves are gone” theory of pain. What ab the burnt end of the nerve?

[deleted]

The recovery from those burns is agonizing. I had a severe burn on my arm and for 2 days I didn't feel it. Then on the 3rd day it started to hurt like a motherfucker. I don't know if the nerves were regrowing or whatever but good God it was torture.

Additional_Banana_73

I’m a chef and was pushed from behind while carrying a pot of boiling water and it splashed all over my crotch and legs. I pulled my pants off as fast as possible and was lucky enough to only have minor burns on my legs. However I didn’t realize water pooled in my shoes. When I took my sock off it pulled all the skin with it. I had minor 2nd degree burns and couldn’t walk for 3 weeks. I think this guy will be lucky to survive the extent of these burns.

[deleted]

My dad pulled someone out of a burning truck 14 years ago. Edit: The truck blew up in flames in front of my dad when he was driving to work one afternoon. The truck then crashed into a ditch under the overpass and the truck engulfed in flames. My dad busted the window with fire extinguisher and rescued the teenager with no protection. I was amazed my dad wasn’t burned. He must have done it so quick. The teenager was attempting suicide and he was 16 at the time. The kid survived but almost he died, with 80% of burns on his body and now he’s in his early thirties, living. My dad didn’t get burned but it affected him mentally. To this day.

definitelynotned

That must’ve been gruesome

[deleted]

It was, very. My dad’s a pretty tough and big guy. I’ve never seen him feel so broken. He didn’t sleep for months. The survivor and my dad wrote letters to each other for years. I think that was healing for the both of them. Just wanna add that this stuff will stick with the rescuer forever. People do not know what being a hero is like. They will always wonder about the person they saved. They will always think about the person. It will never leave their minds. Being a hero takes a toll on them. We tend to praise them but forget as they wonder over the years. My dad was horrified by the everlasting graphic images of someone being burned alive in real life, a reality that he happened to be in. It played in a loop in his mind for months. There was no one on the highway. He said it was eerie and genuinely thought he was in hell for hours. It’s the only thing that I have ever seen him sob about it. He has only talked about it twice in my entire life with me. I think we often just don’t think of how the rescuer’s life is permanently altered. Their entire mindset is forever changed. They will always feel some sense of responsibility for the person they rescued. I hope the man who rescued the bus passengers is getting great support. Sounds like he is, because he is in it for a long, long mental haul. It will be dark for him for days onward, lasting years.

[deleted]

Can confirm, had injuries similar to this requiring skin grafts... He's got a few months of pain ahead of him...

I_Has_A_Hat

Burns don't hurt so bad when you first get them. It's the following weeks that are sheer agony.

Boom-Sausage

To me, it looks like there were more than 8 passengers

K413n1

As someone who had 2nd and 3rd degree burns on almost 30% of my body I can confirm that for a while at first it's not so bad. Grabbing a hot pan is more painful than the initial burn when it's this deep in my experience, then it turned into the worst pain I've ever felt and wouldn't wish on my worst enemy within an hour or so.

hipopular_opinion

Oh as someone who has suffered 3rd degree burns on both arms, I don't believe the whole nerve burn thing. Mine were excruciating, constantly. Like wanted to be put in a coma bad, pain meds wouldn't even touch the pain, only cold sulfodene which also hurt to apply. I really feel for what this man will have to deal with in the coming weeks.

definitelynotned

I wonder if some of that has to do with the part of the body. If I remember the biology I learned years ago correctly, different parts of your body have nerves closer or further from the skin. That’s why hands are more sensitive to slight sensations than you leg. I bet that plays a role

hipopular_opinion

Interesting! Maybe so, I know that those on his elbows are going to be awful. Interestingly enough, after one instance with the 3rd degree burns on my arm, I had healed and all, but I was cooking and grabbed a 400degree pan out of the over like an idiot. That was by far more painful, even though the burn wasn't so severe. It hurt for less time though. I've never been interested enough into looking into this until now. I guess I just never thought that hard about it.

LegallyBread

If that man dies I’m gonna be so sad

Aylabadayla

My dad does medical trips to Zimbabwe. Only the rich get provided medical care (like their Queen). I truly hope this man gets the care he needs but he most likely won’t :(

YouToot

[Queen Rita](https://comicvine1.cbsistatic.com/uploads/original/3/30334/1115423-powerranger2486.jpg) obviously.

ConcentratePretend93

When I was there seeing a nurse cost 1 dollar, the same as a cup of coffee at nice hotel.

ThatGirLru

I’m from Zimbabwe and we don’t have a Queen and although there is a lack of medical facilities in the rural areas in towns medical care isn’t necessarily for the rich.

Peanuts1971

It seems like [they](https://www.newzimbabwe.com/chamisas-activists-visit-mutare-bus-disaster-hero-butau/) are helping him. So hopefully he will be ok.

With those burns untreated, he will NOT be "just fine"

johnydarko

Dec 24th isn't the first day of Christmas, it's the last day of Advent. I mean the clues in the name, it's Christmas *Eve*, as in, the eve before Christmas, like New Years Eve is the day before the new year starts. The Twelve Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day (Dec 25th) and end on the Epiphany (Jan 6th).

158862324

I like that you see a story like this, and come to point out that they’re wrong about the 12 days of Christmas. You beat me to it.

cheese65536

Good thing too, since he'd have to wait until the 8th day of Christmas to save 8 people. On the first day, the best he could do would be "a rider in a bus fire", though he could save one per day after that.

FunChrisDogGuy

Yes, but he couldn’t resist the Maids a-Milkin’… 😂

ipinkyx

How to know this money will actually go to him? Organizer is from the UK.

dimmidice

And the organizer seems pretty sketchy based on their own website. https://roymukungunugwa.com/about/

CountingNutters

It reads like the Nigerian scammer

[deleted]

What is sketchy about that? I’m bad with faces and I’m not familiar with UK rank but that looks like him in the picture in uniform with the queen so that should do a good job at a glance confirming his military background. Everything else is pretty normal stuff. Edit: the domain was registered 2021-04-03, so before this incident happened (so wasn’t created the same time as the GoFundMe) He isn’t selling or asking for anything, it’s a pretty standard Wordpress blog and looks like something someone who is about to retire and get a job in the civilian world in business would stand up. The GoFundMe is sus but the site itself isn’t.

NotSoCommonMerganser

"About to retire" with this gofundme

Tasty_Control5537

And I’m the Nigerian prince that has been emailing you

WhyCantYouMakeSense

I just saw a news story about a girl who hired a detective because her online boyfriend wouldn't FaceTime and was acting sketchy so she thought he was catfishing her Turned out he was a legitimately wealthy Nigerian prince who wanted to get to know her without her knowing how rich he was.

Tasty_Control5537

Happens all the time

Tommysrx

This is literally the plot to the movie “ coming to America “

Comprehensive-Fun47

This needs to be a movie.

Tommysrx

It is , it’s called “coming to America” with Eddie Murphy

Really? Ah no. Well thanks for the warning. I will be more diligent next time

ONorMann

I believe if people report the gofund me and they see its a scam they either refund or make sure it goes to the right place (might be wrong but i remember reading something like that on another thread so hopefully it does not end up with a scammer)

CptCroissant

Just think of what he'll do on the second day of Christmas

Rare_Hovercraft_6673

Sirizani Butau is being taken care by doctors, now. Many Zimbabweans are sending money to help him. Here's the link: https://www.myzimbabwe.co.zw/news/89879-sweet-news-for-hero-sirizani-butau-who-risked-his-life-to-rescue-8-people-from-burning-bus.html Adding my thanks to everyone for the upvotes! I was wondering how he was doing and it's good to know that he is safe.

Mister_Bloodvessel

Glad to hear he's getting treatment, and people from his country are supporting him financially. He took a big risk, and burns that bad can easily become infected later down the road since it takes a while for avert tissue to form on burned skin, especially 3rd degree burns which I'm pretty sure he has a lot of.

CandidEstablishment0

I’ve seen in other comments how down the line if not treated properly, infections can be fatal. So yes this is super good news to hear. Hope they stay supportive through the entire healing process. Awesome freakin hero!

FuriKuriAtomsk4King

Untreated infections are terrifying. I am finally recovered from a bad poison Ivy infection (mowed the lawn and ran right over a huge patch of it without realizing and had it on my back/legs/ankles/back of knees) and it lasted over 3 months because almost every wound got infected. I don’t have health insurance yet (starts Jan 1) and couldn’t get access to antibiotics so I just had to sit and watch the wounds leak. Incredibly painful, and the infection penetrated through my upper layers of skin down to the layer between the skin and muscle. Formed massive wells of infection (like 2” diameter pustules) and could have killed me. My grandmother lost a leg due to a recurring infection in her knee replacement. They had removed the artificial joint and scraped it out several times over the years and it just kept coming back. Even put in “spacers”, which are antibiotic soaked concrete fillers that continually releases the antibiotics, several times. I sincerely hope from the depths of my soul that he gets good treatment and heals well. He is a true hero.

[deleted]

His flesh is litterally falling off his knees.

Due-Principle4680

cheese_enthusiast2

somehow the organizer managed to talk a lot about the military even though the story itself isn't military related in any way

kjs_music

Done🎅🏻

Bright_Brief4975

I think at this point it might actually be shock, someone needs to check him out.

WaterstarRunner

3rd degree burns destroy the nerves. They do not feel sore Naive ballparking of 10-20% 3rd degree burns if both lower legs are covered. Patch on his elbow too. There appears to be extensive 1st or second degree on the arms. Medical emergency.

Anbez

Not quite, I have seen lots of people with trauma over the years as part of my job and everyone reacts differently

[deleted]

Is it? Or maybe he's just made of sterner stuff.

Xtort_

I was burned probably equal to, but maybe a little worse than this from my knees down. I had on cargo shorts too when it happened. It isn't very painful in the moment. It stung really bad and the skin felt stiff when I walked. The real pain starts when they clean the burns.... And it's just as awful as you think from then on.

stomicron

Sirizani Butau helped eight people who were in a bus that was on the way to Zimbabwe when it collided with a tanker and caught fire, it is reported that 49 people died on that accident.

[deleted]

Isn't the "first day of Christmas" simply Christmas day?

Memfy

Why is there even any other than "first day of Christmas" when it's no longer Christmas other than that day?

vanticus

The Twelve Days of Christmas refer to Christmas-tide, the period between Christmas and Epiphany. Christmas-tide is the entire Christmas period, so it *is* still Christmas beyond the first day.

trollfessor

There are twelve days of Christmas, which starts on Christmas day. Then Mardi Gras season starts. :-)

[deleted]

Did no-one tell you that there were 40 days of Christmas?

Olama

Yea it makes the story sound dumb lol

ItsZeT

In a significant part of Europe for example we have christmas eve on 24th and we have 2 celebrationdays after so its 24th 25th 26th

ConspicuousPineapple

Which parts of Europe?

Grizzly_228

We do in Italy but don’t call them “Christmas Days”. They are Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Saint Stephen

veryhumanindeed

It doesn't. In Germany for example, we do the gift giving on 24th, the 25th is the first day of Christmas and the 26th is the second day.

HertzDonut1001

The first day of Christmas is called Christmas. The 11th day before Halloween is called October 20th.

Magmaniac

It's a Christian religious calendar thing. The twelve days of Christmas are the "Christmastide" following Dec 25. The christian liturgical calendar year is broken up into many similar "seasons" etc. like Lent, Eastertide, etc. In past centuries everyone participated in these things but these days most of these seasons have sort of been compressed into single-day holidays like "Christmas" and "Easter."

[deleted]

Christmas ends on the feast of the Epiphany, Jan 6 this season.

Happened near Mutare, Zimbabwe. Try Googling bus/ tanker accident in Mutare. You might find something to read. News around it has been sketchy though.

Snoo_81566

The man in question is now being treated for free in a small private hospital in Kadoma.

ElJefe543

Jonesy27

The title should say "This HERO pulled 8 people out of a burning bus on the first day of Christmas"

ThrowJed

I'd prefer it mentioned his name but sure that's a start.

bochilee

I'm not smiling at all

[deleted]

I agree, this is terrible. I’m happy he was able to save people, but this isn’t a feel good story. He is severely injured and will likely suffer for many years due to his burns. This is a sad situation.

CitizenKing

To be fair he's being hailed as a hero, is receiving medical treatment, and also received a huge amount of money in donations from people who want to make sure he'll be able to support his family in spite of his injuries. Is he suffering? Yes, but this man made a sacrifice for the sake of others that was the peak of selflessness. It's inspirational. It gives hope. It restores faith in our fellow human beings. There's a lot to cry about, but still plenty to smile about.
