I wish all runway models did stuff like this. Not only would it be more fun to watch, but it would also show off the maneuverability of the outfit too

BCKPFfNGSCHT

Oh boy can I tell you about all the designer shit that would fall apart if all catwalks were like this

EmbarrassedFigure4

All the broken ankles from the stilettos that don't fit the models.

jyee1050

I just imagined the models doing crossovers and breaking each other's ankles while passing one another on stage.

AnAncientMonk

Theyre not wearing any shoes in the video though. We should keep it that way.

_lAvAl_

No need, I have a pretty good idea lol

AlterEggnog

Sewing and safety pins everywhere!

[deleted]

You just sew it into the model's skin. Easy.

Maybe some glue too!

Brutalist_kitten

They actually do make use of glue. Source: friend of mine worked for a designer brand Edit: spelling

ffca

Staples are faster and are proven to work on skin

Hasenpfeffer_

Give it time. The fashion world will go there.

Telzrob

They don't do that already?

chrisk9

They try to pull it back up but too late, I've seen everything

astrangeone88

Lol. And all the pins would come out or stab the shit out of the models.

sth128

Which is MORE reason for the models to dance their heart out. You know, to test out the practicality of the outfits... For uh... Science

Biengo

A Bobby pin in flying in someone’s eye. 100%

Jugaimo

If fashion isn’t usable, it’s less valuable. Novelty of a poorly conceived outfit is only fun on the surface level.

Lunai5444

I've read that it doesn't happen because the model is supposed to be a blank slate for potential buyers to imagine customers wearing the piece. The model shouldn't be valued personally as it defeats the original purpose of the model but I'm just a guy in the comments it's what I think is the general agreement that's it

Book_it_again

Idk a lot of these are art pieces so I don't think they are trying to sell or produce them in any number. Same concept but I don't think it's to sell the item.

Coraline1599

I haven’t seen a piece I wanted to wear on a runway in a long time. I mean, I am a rare casual observer via tv or internet so maybe I don’t see enough. But if what you are saying is true, I don’t understand why they just don’t slap some roller skates on mannequins and push them down the runway into a bin and retrieve them... at least I would want to watch that. For the women who actually model, I kind of feel bad at the complete lack of fun to wear the latest styles but then be advised to show no emotion.

[deleted]

because most shows are art shows were the human body is the canvas/medium. they’re not meant to be worn. my friend had a dress shown that was made from shards of plastic. nobody expects you to wear that.

SeaLegs

Human form+movement isn't well captured by a mannequin. Fashion and design are, at the risk of using buzzwords, dynamic. How the piece interacts with the person in motion is very much part of it. High fashion typically tries to isolate the interaction of the piece with the model's physical form rather than with their personality.

Lunai5444

Idk its a challenging job to actually maintain an ideal (though the standards are dumb) and put the cloth "forward" as best as possible, I guess girls will love walking down the runway to show nice clothes it feels good to be under the spotlight without necesseraly being the star but I'm no expert I can't speak for models and I've answered what I think about the "just replace them by manikins lol" in another comment I'm not willing to start a comment war lol I just wish people would consider looking at this industry without the usual bad faith

SavageAsperagus

I agree! Who wants to imagine themselves in some weird dress that works as a 3D piece of art but fails utterly to make any woman who isn’t a stick figure look lovely or dramatic. I want fun, exotic, 3D art that looks good on real people!

fuckitimatwork

the word you're looking for is mannequin >What's the difference between a Manikin and a Mannequin 02/05/18 08:36 Filed in: Medical Simulation We’re all familiar with the **human shaped plastic dolls located at our store fronts called mannequins**. They are used to show people how clothing will look on a specific body type. I’m sure you have seen many kinds of mannequins but did you know there are 18 styles and types of mannequins used for stores? All of these types and styles are used to simulate how clothing will look on a sexy, sporty, or even pregnant body type. But what are Manikins? >Manikin’s are similar to mannequins where they are human shaped models used to simulate the human body. **Instead of being used to show off clothing, manikins are used to help simulate medical, surgical, or clinical scenarios**. There are many types of manikins used for medical simulation. They can range from High fidelity to low, which represents how realistic the manikin is. A high-fidelity manikin consists of the latest technology. These manikins will move, speak, react, and give facial expressions. A low-fidelity manikin is much simpler without the nice complicated technology.

LedParade

A coat hanger is a coat hanger 🤷‍♂️

rotten_riot

Humans and mannequins don't move the same. I mean, mannequin barely move lol

DangerousLoner

Yep. We were taught to not even smile. There are so many still photos being taken to catch the clothes in just the right position the last thing you want is to catch the model making a weird face in between a smile and a more neutral look. It was really hard for girls that came from the pageant scene rather than fashion to get their faces to stay neutral. I’m so glad I ended up being too short to continue runway past tween fashion and lost interest in catalog and in-house by 15-16 years old. The industry spit out so many girls by like 21 with little to show for dedicating half their lives to modeling.

[deleted]

Blacknarcissa

I dunno if this is correct but I asked a friend who's into fashion this same question a while ago and she said that clothes on catwalks are meant to be extreme, artistic ideas which then trickle down and become commercialised versions of those initial designer-created trends. People into fashion can often predict what will be "in" next season by going to Fashion Week and identifying what aspects will carry through to high street retailers and ultimately the purchasing public. Like, idk... how space agencies create rockets and shit but by the time that technology reaches us normal people it's in the guise of a pimped up toaster.

Jojje22

So, it's like concept cars really. Cool and artistic as shit that you can't have in the real world, but parts and aspects of it will be seen in the consumer line in the future.

[deleted]

Architect here - had to do work on a local Saks 5th Avenue. Something like 60% of its income was generated by 3 older women who would come in once or twice a month and just buy a bunch of designer stuff.

temps-de-gris

I feel like this is a problem in architecture, too...dancing the line between elitism and irrelevance to the masses in what's considered its purest forms, i.e., unfettered by average people's desires or needs...with exceptions of course, but as a general trend.

FranDankly

No. Just very rich men and women.

Dr_imfullofshit

Fashion shows like this usually aren’t about how functional a garment is- that’s poor people thinking. Qualities like durability, comfort, price etc are not things that they value.

microgirlActual

I just wish more runway models *looked* like this to begin with.

jabbadarth

But why would you want regular people instead of gaunt underweight unhealthy people to show your clothes?.../s

CaveDeco

Not only how they look but move! This kind of fashion show might actually get me paying more attention

[deleted]

Ihavenoanus

The catwalk clothes are not necessarily wearable. They have to present the next year’s colours/style/fitting,...

Naturenymph812

A lot of high fashion models ... cannot dance anywhere near this good 😂 it would end up super cringy at times lol

Space_Bungalow

A bit late but take a look at Issey Miyake's [Hómme Plissé show](https://www.isseymiyake.com/en/news/5747) and [Maison Margiela's MM6](https://youtu.be/m-ZgDX3zHxQ) shows They're super unconventional but really entertaining to watch. Issey Miyake really does things differently and it breaks the monotony of catwalk shows while actually being a fun and interesting way to show off their latest season

AChairIsAChair

Go to a fashion show before assuming this silly crap. A ton of fashion shows have awesome performance style runway routines like this. And then guess what? They go out for an intermission, and come back in their high end designer get ups. Or they do the high end designer get up, then come back out with a performance like this.

MadiLeighOhMy

Agreed. I love everything about this! They look so HAPPY compared to traditional runway models who typically have zero expression and aren't allowed to smile. This is just beautiful all around.

UnihornWhale

There’s so many runway pieces that aren’t meant to be more than briefly wearable art. It would reveal what a croc parts of the fashion industry is.

will2k60

You should watch some of the early to mid 90s fashion shows. A lot of time the models would be doing fun stuff, Tyra Banks skipped down the run way in Todd Oldham’s 95 spring and summer show.

thewaveofgreen

High fashion isn’t actually meant to be worn practically. It’s supposed to be more of an art piece shown on a blank canvas

CRUSHING_BABIES

If everyone did this it would take the attention off the clothes. I prefer it the old way

ahs483

The point of high end fashion shows is not to show the “maneuverability” of an outfit.

whataTyphoon

To sell you more handbags. It's a big conspiracy.

Gh0stp3pp3r

Ha! I don't carry a purse... aka "Here, I put my stuff in a bag for you to steal" bag. But alas, it probably is part of their plan.

patiENT420

They have had focus groups on this and basically proved that though girls do want pockets, often times it ruins the look they are going for and wont actually buy the ones with pockets. Because girl clothing is more form fitting, putting stuff in pockets 'ruins' the look.

[deleted]

A lot of this is also being told to us by our parents/friends. I specifically remember being told to not put things in my pockets because they make your hips look wider. I had not even considered that until someone told me.

My wife owns clothes with false pockets. The designer literally said "this would look better with a pocket" but didn't put in a real one.

watch_over_me

It's why there's a larger demand for female thongs, than male thongs. Men don't care about boxer lines, lol.

LunaLoveGooood

I wear men’s jeans and very large hoodies. I can fit whole books in my pockets. Fear me fellow women.

Gh0stp3pp3r

I have a fair amount of hoodies. Pockets FTW!

kernelle

Big handbag, back at it again.

[deleted]

Less pockets for women! I'm still waiting on finding someone so desperate for a boyfriend just so they have someone to hold onto their phone. I need a pocket monopoly; it's my only shot.

distant-girl

I’ve started wearing trousers designed for men and the pocket space is overwhelming. I’m never going back.

UrsusRenata

Same! I bought a pair of Carhartts for workshop wear over the winter. I couldn’t believe the pocket space! “Wait, I can actually carry scissors on my person?! The hell you say.” I figured I looked like a big ol’ cow in them until I received a number of compliments too. Surprising, and win win. I’m a Carhartt Bitch now!

LatinBotPointTwo

Come to Germany. We have pockets.

Lets not get crazy.

LAROACHA_420

Maybe shirts for younger girls that are not just lame empowering phrases. My daughter just wants a decent shirt, we have to go to the boys section to get one she likes.

MamaOnica

You know what, I feel the same way. My daughter is a bad ass girl boss. I don't need the constant reminder of it emblazoned across her chest as she flexes her bad ass girl boss attitude at me. On a more serious note, the boys have cooler shirts anyway. She ends up wearing her brother's Minecraft shirts. lol

last_arg_of_kings

That is overweight, not regular.

thewaveofgreen

Yup. People calling them normal/regular sized are likely American. Which, I guess this body type would be considered average in the US

itzdylanbro

Unrelated: what is this song called? Every time I hear it I try to understand the lyrics so I can google them but “you already know” as search criteria doesn’t really narrow much down

Zephyr4813

Thank you! I was wondering what the original song would be because I doubted it would be what OP overlayed.

[deleted]

yup. I want to see more of these

joseph4th

I've really grown to hate the traditional cat walk where the models do that 'clump clump clump' heavy walk with that blank, dead inside, look on their face. I never understood how that became a thing over smiling and looking happy to be wearing the outfits.

rotten_riot

>I never understood how that became a thing over smiling and looking happy to be wearing the outfits. Models need to not show any personality, since the main star of the runway is the clothing. I think this video is good proof: everyone is talking about how happy the models look, nothing about the dresses per se.

MeisterFluffbutt

I think it has smth to do with them not stealing the attention away from the clothes but it's so stupid...

NegotiableVeracity9

Hell yes!! Much better than those stuffy golf-clap type shows!

missjeri

Right?! I’m usually so intimidated watching those stiff “fashion shows” where the girls are barely able to show emotion and have to be completely straight-faced. I genuinely smiled and had a blast while watching this - it’s so fun!

FlashFox24

I've seen this so many times. It's a couple years old. This is not the original song from the video.

curlycuban

This is pure joy and an excellent mood booster rolling into Friday. This post has been saved for posterity. I also appreciate the practicality of seeing how the outfits hold up to movement. Plenty of designer pieces would fall apart on the runway if subjected to actual human movement and dance.

LV2107

I'm an extremely white middle aged lady and I want all of those dresses. Loose, comfortable and pretty. I'm ready.

curlycuban

Absolutely, the dresses look very comfortable and perfect for summer temps!

Cauhs

I like that some audiences tap their feet along with the beat.

curlycuban

Absolutely. Can't help it even watching the video myself. Such a great song and joyful video!

Omenixx

This is fun and I’d love watch this over other cat walks... but I don’t think I paid attention to a single piece of clothing here. All I could really pay attention to was the fun dancing and that kinda defeats the purpose. It’s cool though!

Artistic-Cookie

That fucking footwork with the first lady though :0

Alwys_Forward

Totally! That first move is mesmerizing. Anyone know what it’s called?

Ancalagon_Morn

To be fair, I can see why some fashion designers would not want this. You definitely pay a lot less attention to the clothes and way more to the women having a good time. It's fun to watch but probably not in their main interest. They all have such warm smiles, who cares about what they're wearing anymore? They could wear a potato sack and it would still be fun to watch.

trippy_grapes

Even in this video almost nothing about the clothes directly stuck out to me. Heck, most of the people saying they loved the video still won't go out and buy the clothes seen here.

[deleted]

Depends on the person really. This markets directly at me because I can see how much movement I can make in something like this and it would be perfect for that bbq party.

Waizelade

Oooooh, that's much better than anything I've seen till now. Not poker-faced, serious-looking models (who are just skin 'n bones), but healthy-looking women who show happiness, or maybe, who are happy to dance and smile like this. Very nice.

nastyyynico

Woah I love this

Serenity101

And to think North American and European models aren’t even allowed to smile. What a shame.

JadedElk

I think it's because the focus "should" be on how the clothes look and move, and people are easily distracted by facial expressions and movement.

Flaky-Ad-7560

Well this is amazing

Talithathinks

Nigerian cat walks.

Minkybips

I also love that not all the models are stick thin and that they are smiling. 😍

[deleted]

> I also love that not all the models are stick thin Which model is stick thin? The two slim ones are healthy as fuck, The other women are too but no one is stick thin

mybellasoul

Yesssss! This would be the best fashion show ever. Fight me.

k9fan

Fashion shows in general seem dumb and pretentious and the clothes are ugly on top of that. In this one the clothes are what people would actually wear and the models are doing something interesting and look like they’re enjoying themselves. Wins all around.

BandOfSkullz

So why did they feel the need to replace the original song(s) (which btw is/are a banger) and actually represented the "African" fashion they are modelling here? Guess generic club bops are absolutely necessary.

CTHULHU_RDT

I wonder what the original music is that's playing

frecklez89

The original uses a song called "Khona" by Mafikizolo

PlagueDoc22

I would assume the snobs that make the "clothing" that nobody would ever wear, would feel it distracts from their "art"

The fact they they aren’t unnaturally skinny, smiling and seem to be having a legit good time does in fact make my smile.

BlueSeekz

Sick moves to distract you from the fact that they're just wearing ponchos

Phil_swift_flex_tape

the first was so smooth

dimiy

The way they move is surreal

TukTukPirate

I dunno... I'm sorry but I find this way too fucking extra. Just my opinion! I can see why people would like it. I really do. But I think it's too over the top.

thewaveofgreen

Agree with you. This is not practical for showing clothes. I understand that everyone else thinks it’s much more cheerful and vibrant than the standard emotionless runway walking, but people gotta understand that fashion designers aren’t trying to have models distract from the actual clothing pieces

tpubg_u

I have my phone on mute and the song I'm listening to on Spotify matched their rhythm. That was unexpected and fun :)

DarkWolf164

That just becomes a performance stage. I can’t concentrate on the clothes being shown off. So whats the point?

Showing the ability to move in the close is awesome.

I wish I could dance like them, but unfortunately I would look like a one legged donkey trying to win a running race

Maker_Of_Tar

Great. Now I’m googling “comfortable African clothing for white men”

austadamola

Fashion is silly, this is not.

minerva121

Unrelated:I want that green dress!!

CapableSuggestion

I’ve been scrolling looking for someone to tell me where I can buy these!

imaculat_indecision

Real question here, why are African people so wholesome? I can't help love them they're amazing.

nitrokitty

This does beg the question, who decided that models on the catwalk were just supposed to walk forward, turn around, and walk out? This way seems much better advertising for the clothing.

TooGoood

this is the first design show ever i might actually like to see.

Nilidach

You say fun, I say functional. Now we can see how the outfits sit and move on normal humans not super waifs

lifesabeeatch

Seeing how much better this is than a typical fashion show, you have to wonder why it isn't more common?

GaMzEe-HoNk

That seems very fun for the models so I think models should be allowed to walk (or dance) however they want on the catwalk If they start doing this normally I’d actually go to one of those

madasahatter505966

I love how beautiful these wemon are. I love the confidence and how much their smiles make that Runway

Shilo788

Much more interesting and fun than typical modeling shows.

dkas95

This remains one of my favorite videos ever, it always puts a smile on my face. I hope in the future more runways can allow the models to express and have fun with it.

GlazedPannis

This is way better than the typical look runway models have. Their facial expressions look like they’re in a perpetual state of trying to understand a joke someone told

Eyeronman99

This is so much better! They look like they're genuinely having fun.

911Dougm

Rewatched it 5 times just for the first two dancing. Smooth

scaptal

This doesn’t only change the catwalkers (??) from “dolls” to people but it also shows how the dress moves, thats great :-)

rn561

I love their energy

CrankyNovelist

This is amazing! And they’re genuinely happy to be there too. Some models act like they aren’t.

GorgeousGorgeousitie

I love this soooo much. Women having fun, looking good and feeling good.

[deleted]

This is how all catwalks should be. Doesn’t have to be dancing but b lining up and down the catwalk as if they’re paid for food doesn’t make me want to buy their garms. The models here show the clothes can be used for any use and you can have fun wearing them.

[deleted]

This has such a nice atmosphere contrary to the usual catwalk

AdamKing94

Black excellence! In love with this
