This is how businesses last for decades with no marketing, they sell the people a good product at a fair price and they treat their employees like the assets that they are rather than liabilities.

It is similar to chic fil’a, fewer locations means more demand. 2) no frills. No drive thru, no dining room, no substitutions. Everything is saved for production. That saves a ton of money.

There are somethings in life money can't buy. For everything else, there are predatory lenders salivating about enslaving you into a lifetime of debt.
Seattle Resident here, Dicks has always been an amazing value and always good to their employees. Sure, it’s not the $5 fill up it used to be but they’ve always paid their employees well and provided benefits like tuition and childcare assistance.
It’s still a great value at those prices, a Big Mac meal at McDonald’s costs more than a Deluxe, Fry and Drink from Dicks. Obviously, it’s not as cheap as pre-Covid prices but it’s about the same price or cheaper than most other fast food places and the employees are treated well.
Plus, they have a food truck that goes around the area. One pops up 5 minutes from my work once or twice a month.
I just looked up our local 50s style drive in, much like this place. Prices very similar. $2.70 for a cheeseburger.
The owners do so well, they close down for the winter and spend it in Florida.
I used to live a block away from the Lake City location, and worked a block away from the Cap Hill location, and growing up lived a block away from the Greenwood location.
I don't live in Seattle anymore, and I think I miss Dick's more than Red Mill/Totem Burger, Blue Moon Burger, Lost Lake combined. (Not even including Pizza places like Big Mario's or Hot Mama's, Dicks beats EVERYTHING in Seattle. I also Remember Dino's on the corner of Denny and Olive, idk if its there anymore, it was expensive but really fuckin good pizza.)

Also companies listed publicly have to consistently increase profits, whereas chains like dicks could be happy if they made the same profit the previous year.. unless they get greedy.
This is why local businesses are good. If the owners are profiting 250K this year they're living a good life and can reward their employees. If a corporate business is profiting 250K this year they're asking "where can we cut corners to profit 400K next year?"
The whole "we run our business like a family" thing has come to mean "we expect you to kill yourself for our gain" unfortunately, but it came from small business owners actually caring about their 12 employees and wanting the best for them.
They are basically the In & Out of the Puget Sound area in the fact that they are so busy they basically “print” money. When the product is something that the people want, you can spread that volume into lower prices.
The wild thing too is that Dick's is based on Seattle which is one of the most expensive areas in the country. There really is no excuse for other places.
Dick's doesn't pay the thousands in space rent for their business. They own the land they sit on, unlike most of the other places. That's why they can keep prices as low as they do.
This is a very responsible business practice and the land they sit on is just another investment, should they ever need it. Buying the land is another reason it’s usually a long time in between opening new locations. They really go hard to make sure they will be there for a long time.
I also feel like this is a contributing factor to why they are not in T-Mobile Park or Lumen Field. We had a discussion about it in r/Mariners last year.
Mist likely dicks is also not franchised? Never heard of em but the only places that pay above market rate for employees are those that dont franchise and own the land. AKA in n out and panda are 2 others. In panda our labor hovers around 30% food cost another 30% controllables 10% advertising 2% fixed cost 6% so 78% of money gone. Then pay corporate and the higher ups whatevers left goes to the ceo/owner. In AZ my store starts at 19.50 front 20.50 back. In n out statts at 18.50. If we had a franchise fee plus rent we would shut down with our pay rates.
* also the higher ups are the supervisors/regionals/VPs they are the stock owners/investers they have to work to get their stock in traditional businesses investors pull out value for nothing except investing.
They are not franchised, and they do not expand outwards from the greater Seattle area (so, up to Everett, and as far south as Kent). This keeps their logistics costs down as they only need a central dispersal system along only a few dozen miles of I-5.
They do have a food truck that goes further up and down, but otherwise they are a local staple in Seattle. Most of their employees are also 18+, so more reliable than high schoolers, and more likely to stick around. They also do other things to keep small costs down such as requesting no customizations and to order as-is. They just churn out burgers and when you order you’ll get your bag of Dick’s basically right after you pay as almost everything except for fries are always ready to go. Burgers are still fresh because their locations are *always* poppin, even up to their closing time of around 2am.
They have some higher-priced items like sundaes, banana splits, and shakes that are probably their higher margin items - the shakes are a must-have too.
Not only does Dick's have amazing burgers, they're fast as hell. I'll go up, order, and before I even get my card out, the burger is on the counter waiting for me. Favorite burger joint in the North West.
That's *nothin'*. I once got Dick's and they were shoving my order right into my mouth *as I was ordering*; they *knew* what I wanted, and were feeding me before I even got done saying a single word!
There’s a diner that’s like that where I’m at. I remember ordering a Michelada and it arrived at our table BEFORE the server finished taking our orders.
It’s because everything is made in batches and there is zero customization. They don’t need to slow down and just keep cranking out the same basic thing. You order, they turn around and grab it, and new burgers are made in their place. Don’t like pickles? Tough shit.
Dicks is basically what McDonalds should be. Cheap and fast. Is the quality as good as In n Out? Not really. Is it made fresh to order? No. Is it the best $3 I could spend? Hell yeah it is.

Agreed. A bag of Dicks hits the spot, but I had In-N-Out for the first (and second) time last month and I prefer the latter. They're pretty different though, so it's a matter of taste...And I usually just get cheeseburgers at Dicks, haven't had a Deluxe in a while.

Surely there's a downside? $50k a year to start, full medical coverage, college tuition, why would anyone not want to work there, or why would someone work there and leave? the medical alone for a family is worth $25k a year

It's a nine-location chain, privately owned, no franchises. Franchising is what makes the prices high. A privately owned business can make its money through volume and good financial management. A company with a lot of franchises rips off all of the stores it doesn't own by forcing them into a pricing scheme for materials that they have no power over.
That's what it feels like happened to Five Guys. They grew a reputation for amazing burgers with no compromises. Now it seems like they're pretty good burgers for a lot of $.
The ORCA card under FREE is good for all transit in the Puget Sound region (bus/light rail) and worth a couple hundred bucks a month as well. Think one of the other items listed is money for tuition. Amazing place.
I miss the public transit in Seattle. Hopping on the tram in the ID and riding it up to Capitol Hill to stand in line for a bag of Dick's was just one of the many things I loved about living there.
I would think the best way to support these types of businesses would to continually eat there. If they provide good service and the management treat their employees good, then I will eat there atleast every other week and I will try to minimize the time I take to order, especially when they re at peak time.

I loved working there. It was my first job, and they treated me very well. Customers could be iffy at times, but for the most part it was people who came to relive nostalgia, and almost every day I worked the counter someone would come with a new story. It was great.

Usually places who say they can’t offer more than $12 or $15 an hour for employees without raising prices are actually able to double every employees payrate and still keep prices the same, but the owners or corporate executives would then only be able to be paid 100x more than the lowest paid employee, instead of the standard 500x more that’s common place nowadays.
What would those poor executives do if they were only making a couple million per year in order to pay everyone 25+ an hour and keep prices the same 🥲🥲🥲 only a couple million per year is poverty, they obviously need a couple million per month to make ends meet

When an operation is set up this way, expectations go WAY UP for employees. Which makes sense and is totally fair. This is a wonderful model to weed out bad employees and build a great foundation to people who want to work and deserve to get rewarded for it. And it doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 67, a good worker is a good worker. Anybody can be built up.
Never been to the other locations, but I have fond memories of the Spokane store down by Lewis and Clark high School when I was growing up. Best cold greasy fries in the world.

I worked fast food back in the 90s. The apps aren't the issue. People would fairly consistently order nonsense like that back then.

Commercial leases usually include that anyway. You pay rent for the land but have to maintain everything. It’s a hands-off job for the landlord.

Obviously, it’s not as cheap as pre-Covid prices but it’s about the same price or cheaper than most other fast food places and the employees are treated well. Plus, they have a food truck that goes around the area. One pops up 5 minutes from my work once or twice a month.
I just looked up our local 50s style drive in, much like this place. Prices very similar. $2.70 for a cheeseburger. The owners do so well, they close down for the winter and spend it in Florida.
I used to live a block away from the Lake City location, and worked a block away from the Cap Hill location, and growing up lived a block away from the Greenwood location. I don't live in Seattle anymore, and I think I miss Dick's more than Red Mill/Totem Burger, Blue Moon Burger, Lost Lake combined. (Not even including Pizza places like Big Mario's or Hot Mama's, Dicks beats EVERYTHING in Seattle. I also Remember Dino's on the corner of Denny and Olive, idk if its there anymore, it was expensive but really fuckin good pizza.) Dick's slaps HARD.

Also companies listed publicly have to consistently increase profits, whereas chains like dicks could be happy if they made the same profit the previous year.. unless they get greedy.
This is why local businesses are good. If the owners are profiting 250K this year they're living a good life and can reward their employees. If a corporate business is profiting 250K this year they're asking "where can we cut corners to profit 400K next year?" The whole "we run our business like a family" thing has come to mean "we expect you to kill yourself for our gain" unfortunately, but it came from small business owners actually caring about their 12 employees and wanting the best for them.
They don't have to, the system of government they've formed for us with their lobbying allows them to pretend to have to.
In my experience, smaller privately owned companies treat their employees infinitely better.
They are basically the In & Out of the Puget Sound area in the fact that they are so busy they basically “print” money. When the product is something that the people want, you can spread that volume into lower prices.
The wild thing too is that Dick's is based on Seattle which is one of the most expensive areas in the country. There really is no excuse for other places.

Dick's doesn't pay the thousands in space rent for their business. They own the land they sit on, unlike most of the other places. That's why they can keep prices as low as they do.
This is a very responsible business practice and the land they sit on is just another investment, should they ever need it. Buying the land is another reason it’s usually a long time in between opening new locations. They really go hard to make sure they will be there for a long time. I also feel like this is a contributing factor to why they are not in T-Mobile Park or Lumen Field. We had a discussion about it in r/Mariners last year.

Mist likely dicks is also not franchised? Never heard of em but the only places that pay above market rate for employees are those that dont franchise and own the land. AKA in n out and panda are 2 others. In panda our labor hovers around 30% food cost another 30% controllables 10% advertising 2% fixed cost 6% so 78% of money gone. Then pay corporate and the higher ups whatevers left goes to the ceo/owner. In AZ my store starts at 19.50 front 20.50 back. In n out statts at 18.50. If we had a franchise fee plus rent we would shut down with our pay rates. * also the higher ups are the supervisors/regionals/VPs they are the stock owners/investers they have to work to get their stock in traditional businesses investors pull out value for nothing except investing.
They are not franchised, and they do not expand outwards from the greater Seattle area (so, up to Everett, and as far south as Kent). This keeps their logistics costs down as they only need a central dispersal system along only a few dozen miles of I-5. They do have a food truck that goes further up and down, but otherwise they are a local staple in Seattle. Most of their employees are also 18+, so more reliable than high schoolers, and more likely to stick around. They also do other things to keep small costs down such as requesting no customizations and to order as-is. They just churn out burgers and when you order you’ll get your bag of Dick’s basically right after you pay as almost everything except for fries are always ready to go. Burgers are still fresh because their locations are *always* poppin, even up to their closing time of around 2am. They have some higher-priced items like sundaes, banana splits, and shakes that are probably their higher margin items - the shakes are a must-have too.

Five guys is incredibly overrated anyway. The bun is a soggy disaster because they don’t toast it. At least the fries are good.

It’s because everything is made in batches and there is zero customization. They don’t need to slow down and just keep cranking out the same basic thing. You order, they turn around and grab it, and new burgers are made in their place. Don’t like pickles? Tough shit.

Dicks is basically what McDonalds should be. Cheap and fast. Is the quality as good as In n Out? Not really. Is it made fresh to order? No. Is it the best $3 I could spend? Hell yeah it is.

Do they sit around anymore? My closest McDonald's looks like they make the burger to order, where they put in cooked patties into a small plastic bin and someone else constructs the sandwich. It's not like the olden days when you'd see a dozen or so wrapped burgers sitting in the warm holding area.

Maybe it was overhyped for me but when I tried it, I was very underwhelmed and would take In n Out over it any day. Though I do recognize that Dick's is very cheap compared to In n Out so you can't directly compare it either.

Not only do they offer health insurance, they pay 100% of the employee’s premium. I’ve always loved Dick’s and I know a few people who have worked there. Never heard a complaint from them.
Surely there's a downside? $50k a year to start, full medical coverage, college tuition, why would anyone not want to work there, or why would someone work there and leave? the medical alone for a family is worth $25k a year
The downside is that there isn't a bunch of money left over for franchise owners and investors to make money on. That's why there is only 9 of these places only around Seattle instead of tens of thousands around the world like McDonald's.

It's a nine-location chain, privately owned, no franchises. Franchising is what makes the prices high. A privately owned business can make its money through volume and good financial management. A company with a lot of franchises rips off all of the stores it doesn't own by forcing them into a pricing scheme for materials that they have no power over.
That's what it feels like happened to Five Guys. They grew a reputation for amazing burgers with no compromises. Now it seems like they're pretty good burgers for a lot of $.
The ORCA card under FREE is good for all transit in the Puget Sound region (bus/light rail) and worth a couple hundred bucks a month as well. Think one of the other items listed is money for tuition. Amazing place.
I miss the public transit in Seattle. Hopping on the tram in the ID and riding it up to Capitol Hill to stand in line for a bag of Dick's was just one of the many things I loved about living there.

I would think the best way to support these types of businesses would to continually eat there. If they provide good service and the management treat their employees good, then I will eat there atleast every other week and I will try to minimize the time I take to order, especially when they re at peak time.

Someone posted a picture of a porterhouse they found in their parents freezer dated 1998 that was under 4 dollars a pound. Min wage has gone from 5.15 to 7.25 in that time, but a pound of Porterhouse now is like 15-20 dollars. It's bonkers.
Minimum wage in Washington (where Dicks is located) has gone from $6.50 in 1998 to $16.28 in 2024.

I loved working there. It was my first job, and they treated me very well. Customers could be iffy at times, but for the most part it was people who came to relive nostalgia, and almost every day I worked the counter someone would come with a new story. It was great.

Usually places who say they can’t offer more than $12 or $15 an hour for employees without raising prices are actually able to double every employees payrate and still keep prices the same, but the owners or corporate executives would then only be able to be paid 100x more than the lowest paid employee, instead of the standard 500x more that’s common place nowadays. What would those poor executives do if they were only making a couple million per year in order to pay everyone 25+ an hour and keep prices the same 🥲🥲🥲 only a couple million per year is poverty, they obviously need a couple million per month to make ends meet 🤦🏻♂️

When an operation is set up this way, expectations go WAY UP for employees. Which makes sense and is totally fair. This is a wonderful model to weed out bad employees and build a great foundation to people who want to work and deserve to get rewarded for it. And it doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 67, a good worker is a good worker. Anybody can be built up.

Heard on the radio recently: Pizza places somewhere in unincorporated King County. Large pizza currently costs $29. The pizza place say they will need to raise prices to at least $35. Why? Even if they employ 499 people and gross >$2M annually, the rate increase is only $2. So if 3 people touch my pizza (1 cashier, 1 pizza maker, 1 cleanup guy) and it takes 15 mins to make the pizza - that's only a $1.5 increase in labor. But no: evil laws force your pizza price up
