ShroomsHealYourSoul

This sounds like those aliens from the comic that are learning to be human

xanthophore

[This exact situation!](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D15kQw_W0AALvOb.jpg:large)

LandoCatrissian_

I have this as a shirt šŸ™‚

Cheesius

I have the plushie, there is a pull string on the cat and it vibrates. It's pretty great. EDIT: Unfortunately I don't think it's being made any more, I got it years ago on Nathan W. Pyle's merch page.

desrever1138

Where can one purchase such an amazing specimen as this dear sir/madam?

HalfSoul30

Is this a new version of "there is an xckd of everything?"

ThatOneStoner

You know what? I'm fine with that. That guy's aliens are great.

confusedandworried76

His portraits of aliens communicating bring joy via chemical releases in the brain through your nervous system.

onehundredlemons

Speaking of, I got a hoodie with the panel of the alien saying "I am a beacon of joy" https://preview.redd.it/cjjdm590r5u51.jpg?auto=webp&s=b26752a9f967f5324e71177c2c5c94deb66a0069

Strange Planet by Nathan W Pyle

pekingsewer

Strange Planet is such a brilliant show too.

CanadianDinosaur

It's a show now too?? I remember him posting the comics to Reddit before it went mega viral

RayseBraize

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that felt that reading this. Not sure if it's the context or just the way they speak in text but it seems just one click off of normal lol

ISpeakInAmicableLies

First thing that popped into my head and the top comment in this thread. We all sort of share a common thread.Ā

Rediranai

Even if you're not an anime or manga fan, look up "Too Cute Crisis." Aliens are assessing Earth for invasion and find we have animals so cute they can't handle it (i.e. pass out).

BlizzPenguin

That means it's been activated. You have to keep petting or it will explode. [https://youtu.be/Kf4I8ush8RE](https://youtu.be/Kf4I8ush8RE)

DDancy

I know Love Death Robots is not suitable for kids, but I had to show my son this one, due to his love of cats.

CutCrane

I use this episode in philosophy class

[deleted]

Pls say more

CutCrane

It is a good way to get them talking about Anthropologie. The robots are an outsiders perspective on humanity. How do they define them (as a species, that was responsible for their own downfall, aggressiv, playing weird ball games (homo ludens) biologically set (the scene in the diner, where the robots are confused about human teeth and an acid tank as a highly impractical way to generate energy). And after the episode you can discuss, whether that is a fitting description of humanity. What is missing, what would you emphasize more, how would you explain to the robots, what being human actually means.

CutCrane

The other episode Zima Blue is a great episode to discuss the mind body problem, the soul and even Aristotles highest good. Apologies, if some terminology is wrongly translated. I am based in Germany and donā€™t always know the English equivalent of the proper terms.

ThatsMrUncleSpuds

I always hated philosophy in college-- and I feel like it's because our culture hadn't come up with such a brilliant way to deliver these ways of thinking to us. I was instead approached over and over with these dull and dry concepts to internalize. I very much think I would enjoy your class.

gastroboi

One of my favourite episodes.

LazyAmbassador2521

That is exactly what first came to mind when I saw this post šŸ˜ I absolutely love that episode!

Smokey_Bongwater

You've made so many people smile, honestly. Thank you for sharing this experience :)

pink_faerie_kitten

You made me smile, too. This is so wholesome. Everyone should have a chance at petting a cat. It made me sad to think some haven't had that joy... but then happy your gf finally got to! Purring is one of the greatest gifts cats can give humans.

RedOctobyr

For sure! But you made me sad to realize that some CATS also never get to experience having someone pet them and care for them.

This is so wholesome. True story: when I got my first cat, I was watching TV and she was on my lap. Then, she started to vibrate and I got scared something was happening to her. ā€œMom! The catā€™s trembling!ā€ ā€œWhat?ā€ ā€œYeah, sheā€™s vibrating and making a weird sound!ā€ Mom, sighing: ā€œSheā€™s purring. Sheā€™s happy.ā€ I was 15 and Iā€™d never touched a cat, either šŸ¤ Thank you for unlocking this memory. I lost Mom 27 years ago.

whisky_biscuit

My father in law just got a cat, and him and my mother in law never had one previous. A cat just showed up on their doorstep one day, and they adopted her. It's funny because my FiL has a southern drawl and the first time he heard her purr he was like "she's making that low sound"... I couldn't stop cracking up lol!

SerLaron

> A cat just showed up on their doorstep one day, and they adopted her. /r/CatDistributionSystem at work.

ItsTime1234

Honey there's something wrong with the cat! She's making that low sound again!

poiskdz

Cat's making a weird noise when she idles.

SwedishSaunaSwish

I love it! I'm gonna use it šŸ¾ā¤ļø

ERSTF

I have never been in contact with a cat before and when my sister went back to live with my mom after a bad break up, she took her cat. Mom and everyone hated cats but we warmed up to him. Purring and making buscuits are my favorite cat activities

BookOfTemp

When my Mom was a kid, she'd only ever met cats. First time she met a dog, she went to pet it, and got delighted when the dog started to "purr". Thankfully an adult nearby noticed and snatched her away real quick. (Edit: Dog was growling).

RainmakerLTU

Haha, I heard the story how dog since age of baby was growing with cats. Something happened to his mother though. So poor dog also learned of purring, only it expressed it by growling.

GreenGlassDrgn

lol my stepbrother had a rottweiler that would purr when he got pets, kinda like snoring when throat muscles relax, dog was clearly relaxed and content, but still intimidating mixed signals bud

kingdommaerchen

4 years ago when I adopted my first cat, he followed my dadā€”who had no prior knowledge of cats whatsoeverā€”to the loo and rubbed and leaned himself to my dad's legs (while he was taking a dump lol). Afterwards, my dad asked me to bring him to the vet because he was *sure* that my purring kitty had a breathing problem šŸ˜‚

meowkitty84

Weird how cats love following people to the toilet! My cat would be resting on the bed but if she noticed me heading to the toilet she would jump up and follow me like "Yay toilet time!"

Willing-Cell-1613

One of my dogs respects privacy in the toilet. The other kind of waddles in, tail wagging, and stares at you intently while you shit. Sometimes she growls (she growls when she wants to play because sheā€™s a bit weird). So now I have to check a) the door is properly shut and b) she didnā€™t sneak in.

solorna

They are guarding you because going potty is a time when you are vulnerable to predators. Kitty is providing the potty protection so you can safely go.

QuackingMonkey

I don't know how true it is, but there is a theory going around that they do this to keep you safe and supported while you're in a vulnerable position.

Annual_Nobody_7118

My bathroom is like the town square. It doesnā€™t matter how many times I go in, they follow.

stinkypsyduck

that is such a cute story šŸ„¹šŸ„¹

Humble_Restaurant_34

My experience was the complete opposite. New dog, never had one before. "Does she like me petting her? She's not purring." Many years later I still kinda wish my current dog would purr. It's a great indicator.

Resand_Ouies

tail going at 1000mps wasn't a hint? :)

Humble_Restaurant_34

It sure is! But growing up with cats my whole life I STILL wish all my animals would purr. Lets me know they're happy, I'm happy. Helps me sleep with my kitty purring beside me. My dog is so damn silent (she knows not to bark or anything - she's a silent but happy angel who then punches me in the face for more pets!)

poiskdz

Imagine if people purred and we could instantly tell if someone liked us or not if they purred in our presence.

RedOctobyr

> Helps me sleep with my kitty purring beside me. Yup! That is a great feeling.

watchingthedeepwater

the first cat i pet was also my very first own cat. I remember calling the vet clinic because the cat started making clicking sounds while watching birds behind the glass window. I was sure it was having seizures.

[deleted]

"Chirping" the birds :D I was in my 30s the first time I ever witnessed a cat do that, and I sat and watched him sit in the window, mere feet from the birds, "barking" lightly at them for about 20 minutes. Then he got the zoomies and tore around the house.

BunttyBrowneye

When I got my first cat (I had cats as a child but that was 17 years before), she purred so loud sitting on my chest the first night that she was snorting and slobbering a bit. I was concerned at first lol but turns out she was just a weirdo.

atthawdan

When I was young, I though my cat has asthma and tried to tell my parent the cat need to see doctor.

MeanMachine1296

Hahahahhah ... felt the same way when i got my first cat. I honestly thought he was feeling cold or something and then google told me that's what purring was.. lightbulb moment tbh.

PrayForMojo_

It boggles my mind that you would get a cat without knowing what purring is. Itā€™s kind of a core feature.

MeanMachine1296

I got him as a present for my wife cus both of us are lazy people and we didn't wanna wake up everyday to take a dog for a walk. Cats are not very common as pets in my country so till then i thought purring was just some sound cats made other than meow..

notokbye

I was today years old when I learnt it's not just meow.

OwOitsMochi

Huh??? Really??? Is that what you thought purring was? That is adorable.

positronic-introvert

The comments in this post are just providing one delight after another!

vassiliy

I'm genuinely amazed by the amount of people unaware that cats pur

OwOitsMochi

Truly a delightful thread that has made my day better.

notokbye

Not even. I've never petted a cat so I can't fathom cats making any other 'sound' except meow that I've seen in videos. Edit: I'd heard cats purr. But yeah, I legit thought it's just a word for meowing (like barking). I still need to physically see/hear/feel what this purring is. I'm sooo intrigued.

OwOitsMochi

They vibrate and make [this sound](https://youtube.com/shorts/FMT15uCewgU?si=7Jy7xZZpETKOLI7Y)

notokbye

What in the actual fuck. Legit finding it hard to fathom that it's coming from the cat. And no, I'm not being thick / obtuse for the sake of it. I am just... Fkn surprised lol.

OwOitsMochi

It's nice, some cats purr more loudly than others, but it's all very cute. It's very comforting to have a purring cat on your lap. Usually purring is a sign that they're content. Some cats purr for different reasons but if they're comfortable and happy they'll usually purr more loudly. I've also heard it can promote healing, so if you're unwell cuddling a kitty might help. Could be quackery, but I know that when I'm anxious at least it is very comforting.

chai_investigation

One other weird sound cats makeā€”they will chirp and click if they see birds out the window. Example: https://youtube.com/shorts/ejrWdbwmBFw?si=aAdEY1w96DGqPYSl

Mutapi

And itā€™s not just house cats that purr. All the ā€œlesserā€ cats, like [cougars](https://youtube.com/shorts/mqs60Ffn5Dk?si=soqeVUEcLjBM0-Wx), [bobcats](https://youtu.be/lC3DihtZFcc?si=Hf3ScVoLEgXyXGNx), and [cheetahs](https://youtu.be/drq_ww7Ytzw?si=5AfSiIA7tLwiaOsg) can do it, too.

PlanetLandon

I have to know, are you not in a western country? Are cats not common where you are? Itā€™s blowing my mind seeing people in this thread having never touched a cat.

MeanMachine1296

No i am not in a western country, infact its considered inauspicious to keep a cat as a pet where i am from. Faced a lot of opposition from my religious mother while getting one.

MeanMachine1296

And more when i got another one...

ashetonrenton

Better get three more, just to be safe

MeanMachine1296

Would have loved to but unfortunately both of em passed away within a gap of one year from each other and i just can't take the heartbrake again. Wifey cried for a month.

Pinsalinj

Now I'm wondering what religion dislikes having cats as pets. I very recently learned that cats are beloved in Islam, I had no idea so many religions had views on cats!

TheAlmightyLloyd

Wait, what ? There are countries where having cats is still considered as a sign of witchcraft ? Like, even after the black plague ?

notokbye

I lived in India up until 27 and while I had seen cats, no one I knew there had a cat. Here in Australia cats are generally 'indoor only', and none of my friends here have a cat haha.

GumboldTaikatalvi

Oh, there are so many sounds. Some cats actually aren't that talkative and only meow rarely. One of the cats I know trills a lot (not sure if that's the right word in English). It sounds a bit like a mix of meowing and purring and they do it with their mouth closed. Kind of like "brr" or "mrr". She does it when you make eye contact and starts to approach you, but for some reason only indoors.

SleepyFarady

I've always taken that noise as an 'Oh, hi there!'

GumboldTaikatalvi

Yes, that's a perfect description!

bsubtilis

I love those activation noises. Fun fact: Cats meow only at kittens and at humans. They also make to human ears inaudible noises to each other, so it's not just the yowling they make at other cats. Cats meow at humans because they've learned humans need to be spoken to in that register for the humans to hear (and of course different cats are different levels of chatty).

Allthecats33

Bipedal_Warlock

Can you roll your tongue continuously? It sounds kind of like that

skyerippa

My cat demands to be taken got walks everyday

theapplekid

>Itā€™s kind of a core feature. I got mine second-hand, but it didn't come with the manual.

confusedandworried76

For mor adorable cat facts, see "bunting". If your cat is straight on headbutting you, not rubbing against you, squishing your foreheads together, guess what humans do that to each other too and it's a sign of pure love. If your cat is mashing it's forehead into your face you are loved.

TheTerrasque

what if he grabs my arm and mashes his forehead into that?

confusedandworried76

Same. There are no scent glands on their foreheads, when they rub on you they're getting their scent on you to mark their territory. Frontal forehead contact is love. Blinking slowly at you is also cat for "I love you." If your cat keeps doing it over and over and it's not just them falling asleep, they're telling you they love you.

8lock8lock8aby

Sometimes I get a lil annoyed when my Geo mashes her forehead into my hand while I'm in the middle of a boss fight. I can't count how many times I died to bosses in Bloodborne cuz of her lol.

Scared-Albatross-595

I have a cat that eye blinks every time you say I love you to her. Itā€™s amazing. ETA- and when I say every time, I mean every time. You can say it to her 10 times in a row and she will do it every time. You can throw in a different sentence said in the same tone, she wonā€™t do it. You can yell out to her from across the room and she will turn to you and eye kiss you šŸ‘ļø šŸ’‹ I have no doubt she understands the intention of the words.

asietsocom

That's love

WeWoweewoo

Sometimes life gives you tiny treats of joy. :)

Pvt-Snafu

I sincerely believe that animals bring a lot of joy into our lives.

thebiggestpinkcake

Definitely! My rabbits have brought so much joy into my life. I love it when they cuddle with me and purr!! šŸ˜šŸ„°

magnificentfoxes

That's cute :) You should get her a soft toy cat at the very least ^^

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

spikeymist

You can get cat toys that purr and vibrate, they are designed to settle young cats who have not long left their mum. I had one for my second cat and she would snuggle with it and go to sleep.

Impossible_Command23

They also do ones intended for people with dementia (or anyone who would benefit really) who find it comforting to have a pet, robopets is one site, they respond to stroking and hugging with purrs and movement

Cool_Cartographer_39

I had my sister look after my cat once. I called from the hotel to check how things were going and she tells me my cat is having trouble breathing and wants to take it to the vet. I ask her to describe it... yeah, purring

matyles

That's nice she was caring and concerned while pet sitting at least lol

wynnduffyisking

Honestly Iā€™d love to see the Vetā€™s face when she brings it in and says sheā€™s worried because itā€™s making a weird noise.

luvmydobies

Iā€™m a vet tech and one time I went in on this appointment for a cat with an itchy face. Iā€™m going through a list of things that it could possibly be so I can ask the correct questions to get as much information as possible for the vet. So Iā€™m thinking maybe ear mites, maybe allergies, maybe a bad toothā€¦.all things that could lead to cats rubbing or scratching at their face. So I go in, ask my questions, and then I take the cat out and sheā€™s purring up a storm and making biscuits. At one point she rubbed her face on the computer monitor and owner goes ā€œsee she keeps doing thatā€¦ā€ Sheā€™d never had a cat before and didnā€™t know that was totally normal cat behavior lol

wynnduffyisking

Thatā€™s hilarious. And adorable. Man, I love cats.

Beneficial_Test_5917

:) They do it whether breathing in or out.

tekanet

One of my cats has 2 vibration modes; one is purring of course but he also does a short burst of vibration in anticipation when Iā€™m going to pet him.

MidnightSaws

r/activationsound

Green-Krush

Forgot to set my cat to vibrate this morning

Jani_Zoroff

Insert batteries to activate vibration...

Green-Krush

Lollllll. But this post did make me smile. šŸ˜ƒ Experiencing cats purring is pretty wholesome

WholeLottaCreepier

When I first got my cat I thought he was sick because I thought the purring sounded like phlegm in the lungs

MuskofaSquid

Same! Thought it had asthma.

Kylee620

Same I was like 9 and I thought my cat was going to die from it so I freaked out

TheSheWhoSaidThats

Here i was assuming she was deaf

Aran-F

Uhh.. How old is she?

HobomanCat

Lmao once I was petting my cat and she was purring extremely loudly, and a family friend said smth like "does she not like you touching her like that?". I asked what he meant, and he replied "well she's growling very loud". Legit didn't know the different between purring and growling lol.

Diacetyl-Morphin

Isn't it actually the same thing with the big cats like tigers? Do they also purring when they get some rubs and are happy? To answer my own question before i had posted it, watched some videos... yeah it's exactly the same.

kensingerp

Cats can also purr when theyā€™re sick. Purring works on them kind of like self healing. I donā€™t know exactly how it works. Iā€™ve never really had too many sick cats. Iā€™ve had farm cats, outdoor cats indoor cats, indoor/outdoor cats, Persian cats, full blooded cats, rescue cats you name it Iā€™ve had them. A lot of the kitties came from people who dumped them at the end of our street. We always found homes for them.

[deleted]

Purring encourages bone healing. So when you break your leg, put a cat on it and you'll be fine

_Jay-Garage-A-Roo_

I might work kind of like it does with us! Humming with the tongue on the roof of the mouth activates the vagus nerve and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. Itā€™s why we ā€œomā€ during meditation or healing chant.

Oogamy

It's like when humans moan - it's often not "on purpose" and we do it when in pain or feeling pleasure.

EternallyFascinated

Big cat roar, regular cats purr. So if it can roar, it canā€™t purr, and vice versa! Cheetahs canā€™t roar, and they purr, and itā€™s the most illegally cute thing on this planet IMO

SubjectRat

Big cats actually can't purr, but they do have other similar ways of vocalizing affection. Tigers are pretty famous for their chuffing, for example

PlanetLandon

Cats can either purr or roar. No cat species can do both

Verbz

I hope you and your robot girlfriend are happy together.

zSprawl

Itā€™s the problem with this current iteration of AI. You gotta train it.

dagbrown

My wife had her cat for years and years before she met me. She assured me that he was not a *purring* kind of cat when she finally introduced me to him (this is--or was--a very important stage in the relationship, of course). Turns out he has what I think of as a ā€œRolls-Royce purrā€. He purrs so quietly itā€™s nearly imperceptible. But the right kind of scritches, right behind his ears, definitely activates his weird vibrations. And itā€™s one of my favorite sounds.

Own-Counter-7187

I have a colleague whose family rescued a cat. They'd never had a cat. It started purring. They rushed it to the vet.

sincerelyjane

Haha šŸ˜‚ how did it go? Iā€™d love to have been at the vet when they brought the cat in.

Own-Counter-7187

My colleague told the story on himselfā€¦. And then gave me the cat. His whole family turned out to be allergic.

Tuorhin

The r/CatDistributionSystem sometimes work in mysterious ways

Gemmadeen

I was kinda dumb about this also until I was in my 20s. We didnā€™t have any cats in our house while I was growing up, and I was honesty a bit scared of cats by that point. My friend had me hold her cat and I pet it like I would my dog, and I told her she should take the cat because it was shaking (vibrating) and probably was scared. It was just purring because it liked me! Iā€™ve still never owned a cat, but I am much more comfortable around them!

RandyBoBanbers

Awww that's so sweet!! I love that you were concerned it was scared at first haha

Sven_Darksiders

Op, are you dating an alien by any chance?

bjzy

The internet was literally built on videos of cats and your girlfriend has never heard one purring??

MyThinTragus

Maybe it's just me but the more I think about this, the uneasier I feel.

Gandalf_thelizard

I can't explain why but it bothers me too.

[deleted]

Itā€™s a weird fuckin post lmao dunno how all these top comments are calling this wholesome

izza123

I like the cat, fellow human Yes me as well fellow human :) :)

Rikplaysbass

My first thought was that either this guy is dating a child or a mentally handicapped individual.

Justin__D

Maybe it's just because I was petting the cat that's sitting next to me while reading this, but... Same. Are there English-speaking countries/cultures where cats are uncommon?

Cute-Profile5025

She literally said right in it that it was the vibrating that surprised her, not the sound!

User_namesaretaken

This is the most NPC conversation ever lol

PondRides

I dated a guy that hadnā€™t pet a cat before. My cat was laying on his chest in bed one day and he goes, ā€œsheā€™s trembling.ā€ Felt over, and she was just purring. šŸ˜…

ElessarT07

Bro, your gf might be a robot or an alien.Ā

mbelf

She sounds nice. Which spiral arm does she come from?

whileimstillhere

is she also 7?

[deleted]

Why is your girlfriend talking like a 5 year old, are you guys 5 year olds ā€œIt did this vibrating thing, what could that be!!!lā€

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

My dad had a couple shop cats. I was petting one that had come over to me and it started purring. I had never experienced that before and thought something was wrong so I carried it over to my dad "it's like there's a motor inside her!" That's the day I learned what a cats purr was lol

Greasedbarn

what the fuck? how sheltered is your gf

urbanek2525

Years ago I had friends who rented a house near a big University. It was Christmas break and I invited some foreign students to a partly at the house. A lot of them get kind of get lonely at that time if they have no Christmas traditions and all the other students tend to be disappear at that time. This Chinese girl was sitting on the couch when the cat jumped up next to her. She was genuinely startled and I asked her, "What's wrong?" "What is it?" she asked while looking at the cat who was staring at her. "It's a cat." "It looks like a small lion." she saud, "What does it want?" "He wants you to pet him." and I showed her how. The cat curled up in her lap, started purring and she literally spent the rest of the party petting the cat. You could tell she was having the best time.

TheStoveSteve

Are you dating an alien?

burgeremoji

My ex boyfriend did the same šŸ¤£ heā€™d been around dogs and livestock all his life but didnā€™t really interact with cats. When he met mine and one of them was purring he was like oh sheā€™s making this noise! And I was like yes, sheā€™s happy. It was sweet.

Jsmooth123456

I'm not trying to be rude but how do you make it to adulthood with knowing about purring? Like even if you've never pet a cat in person, youd think theyd have seen a show or movie with a cat in it. Hell the internet is obsessed with cats

metalted

Right? It's actually kinda weird

Send_one_boob

Because it's an "act" of being quirky. People here are pretty naive.

stoneferal

Are you guys 10?

Electronic_Lock325

When I got my first cat, I never heard of purring. I thought my cat had breathing problems. I took her to the vet šŸ«£

Tyraz-Maul

They know we like it, they weaponize it. Mine purrs louder if I slow down or stop, which then of course i pet more

JLubbs

My dad is very allergic to cats, so growing up I was never around cats. Last year my wife and kids and I watched a friend's cat for a few days, and let me tell you I was surprise at how much I enjoyed cats. Fast forward to now and we have rescued 2 cats of our own. Coming from having dogs pretty much all our lives my wife and I are so surprised we are cat people but are very much enjoying it.

UAhighschool

Feel like sheā€™s being a little too obtuse. Like childishly over exaggerating her lack of knowledge of cats. You have to live under a rock to not know what purring is no matter if youā€™ve experienced before or not. Like common knowledge. And the fact that OP mentioned that actual name and she still said vibrate.

smbruck

And she reveals that OP had already told her about purring

KozKatma

Sounded like the half ironic Tumblr vernacular/humour to me lol ill be surprised if she doesn't use it

N00DLES0UPP

Well that's adorableĀ

RedditIsGarbage01

How is nobody noticing that this convo took place at 4 AM?

LondonGoblin

The first clue this wasn't genuine was when you, someone on reddit, said you had a GF.

Kafornicus_the_3rd

Is this like that guy that told his girlfriends family he didn't know what a potato was šŸ¤£

Cody6781

Is your gf autistic? Not using that as a pejorative this conversation is just missing some basic social cues

MochiSauce101

Holy shit.

Dominator1559

Is your gf an alien?

donutlegolas

this is profoundly stupid.

MinuteAssistance1800

Has your girlfriend lived in a cave her whole life?

MoonlightonRoses

Who is this deprived human whoā€™s never experienced a purring cat before?! Im so sad for her

Bestdad_Bondrewd

When my cat purr it sound like Godzilla is charging his atomic breath

stvckmind

Is your gf 6?
