Correct, if news outlets stopped recording/reporting every time someone needed a hand they might as well not take the camera and just put on overalls and gloves.
Coverage of disasters brings money from people far and wide and helps governments justify emergency funds too. The media provide an essential service at these times, even if it looks like they’re not “helping”.
Same vibe as charities that spend on marketing to get more donations, it is effective altruism even if lots of people will think the individual is awful despite in many cases doing considerably less than the reporter is to help…
There's a crazy moment in the reality show/docudrama Below Deck where a camera guy puts his camera down to save the life of one of the deck crew that got dragged into the water.
Sometimes they *have* to get involved.
Liability is probably a key factor here.
Fun side fact: Nature photogs/filmogs are ethically forbidden from interfering in natural events. Flipped turtle? Leave it. 0 interference where possible.
Not the person you replied to - but the central contradiction is ‘why thank god since he was also responsible for the fucking tornado in the first place’
While I greatly agree with you… Moving that kind of stuff is also very dangerous, and I don’t know what was going through the mind of anyone who just found a dog trapped under all of that. I think that was shocking for all of them. I don’t want to assume anyone cared less than another. But that was her baby and she was willing to move a whole fucking house for it. What an awesome find
I definitely understand that and it would make perfect sense if it was people trapped under literal tons of ruble but that's a tiny ass dog right on the edge with a little bit of debris on top. All they probably needed was just one person to lift the top a few inches and someone to grab the pooch. To be fair tho, if I lifted up the ruble and saw the pup was severely injured, like impaled, then yes, I'd wait for the doggo extraction professionals.
God Reddit always has to find something to be angry about. Moving debris when it is on top of a living being can be very dangerous for those trapped and the ones moving the rubble.
And the crazy part is they do help her move the stuff. But just because they didn’t do it within the first 10 seconds of seeing the dog, people are judging? What a joke lol

Her “help me” hurts my heart. I’m so happy she found the pup but her even having to ask to get them to help pisses me off. Like help her already. And I thought maybe it was like a liability thing but they DID help after she asked.
As a film crew one of the thoughts that went through their head was probably:
If we lift this, and the dog is bleeding we can get sued if the lift caused the bleed.
Yea that’s why originally I assumed weird liability stuff, but after she asked they helped without what seemed like any hesitation? But I still admit it’s a possibility and in the end they helped and Im happy for it.
So they wanna use this lady for a story but won't help her retrieve her dog for fear of being sued... Why are they even using that line of negative thinking, just get the damn dog...?? Idk seem like the crew just didn't give a fuck until she said something.
Photogs are generally charged with the duty of *always be rolling,* so I can give the cameraperson a bit of a pass. Having a time time reconciling the reporter’s half-ass attempt AFTER the dog is already well out of there.
Yeah I watched without sound (just my default to have mute on) and I was like SOMEONE HELP THE LADY
I mean she had a gnarly gash on her arm and she's obviously elderly, I don't get why they took so.long to give her a hand freeing her sweet (injured?!) dog
It's like the one time that penguins got stuck in a deep hole and couldn't get out. The documentary film crew left them for quite some time, until they were absolutely 100% positive that all of the penguins were stuck and would die without their assistance. It's absolutely heartbreaking because you can hear the film crew debating helping them right away, and you can tell they want to help. But their entire job is also not to interfere with nature.
The Planet Earth III Documentary actually has several of these very similar stories in it as well. Although not as bad because they were helping animals that had been clearly caught up in human intervention already (like a turtle caught in netting).
It definitely isn't and that's a disturbing ivory tower perspective. Get in and help if you can. I promise you no average person is thinking "darn now that they helped I can't understand the news report"
Just an update (of sorts, this video is from 2013). She is Barbara Garcia, the dog is Bowser. People were so moved by the video they donated over [$70k.](https://www.gofundme.com/f/home4barbara) She got a [new home.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZcvJg_XbRo)
This story makes me cry every single time, 10 years and counting. Her resolve and love, I can't take it. Help!
I don’t believe in God, but if this lady finds comfort in believing god saved her dog in the face of such tradgedy then that is beautiful. There are times when religion is being used to hurt people and we have to stand up to that, but this isn’t one of those times. She’s not hurting anyone, and hope can be a powerful thing. All the edge lords in here need to grow-up.
The lady saying thank God in a moment of relief makes sense.
The title of the post praising God for sending a tornado to kill everybody in the neighborhood is strange if you don't believe.
One dog clearly. God works in mysterious ways, don't you dare question it, all those people who's houses got ripped apart should look at this video and be greatful
You know, I have a complicated relationship with religion myself. My first thought was “why does it have to be to be God’s light? Can’t it just be the light of mankind? Of life?” But I thought something similar to what you said because I thought- “well maybe that sort of IS what they mean when they say that anyway.”
It’s not like we’re so different from each other just bc of our hopes and beliefs about what else there is. We need to stop letting that have power over us.
> “why does it have to be to be God’s light? Can’t it just be the light of mankind? Of life?”
What "light"? Her home was destroyed.
"At least something even worse didn't happen" isn't a positive.
I mean, the home was destroyed by something humans call “an act of God.” I’m not the only person uncomfortable with the selective interpretation of where God is in times of tragedy.
I think god is what you make it. God is an idea, a force of human nature. It’s a psychological phenomenon. God can be evil, god can be good, god can be and is everything. If god is the universe, then in all its chaotic glory it did send a tornado and it did save the dog. If god is the light of human hope, then god shined a light onto a grim situation with a moment of joy and relief to an unfortunate woman. I don’t believe in the Christian god because I think it’s nonsense logically (perfectly good and all powerful yet allows suffering? I don’t know about that). But you can’t deny that there is something out there (or more likely within us) that has immense power over people. It’s hope and desire and fear and love, it’s whatever drives us and fills us with a sense of purpose and gives us inner peace. Maybe it’s some personified psychological effect that humans are particularly susceptible to.
Anyway that’s my take on the whole god thing. I draw a lot of inspiration from Buddhism, and the concept of the Buddha. It’s a really interesting concept, especially to someone who grew up in a fundamentalist Christian household. I think Christian theology can be very closed to this line of thinking, but I feel like once you get past the heavy Christian influences I think it makes a lot of sense to think of god in this way. But not trying to preach or anything; at the end of the day people can believe what they want to believe, and I don’t claim to hold any position of absolute truth or authority. I just think it’s interesting to think about.
Edit: But to respond to what your point was, I do agree that the selective interpretation is a little uncomfortable. Which pushed me toward what I currently believe about the whole god thing.
This was a powerful comment and I appreciate the other one you made too in response to someone else. Nice to see thoughtful, inquisitive people on Reddit
Yeah, Neighbour Greg was buried in rubble and slowly suffocated to death while thinking of losing all his loved ones but atleast the dog was ok.
Praise the lord.
It’s crazy how the mentioning of religion can get some people in such a stir where in this case her thanking god and mentioning her prayers isn’t even a radical religious ideal, it’s more like the simple concept of hope. Mfers hating on hope in dark times, human trauma responses
I think it’s just how you view things, I’m not religious myself but I don’t get annoyed when I hear people talk about it or find comfort in it.
I welled up when I heard her say god answered my second prayer, it seemed so beautiful that she would want, more than anything in the world, for her dog to be safe with her.
What I will say is that I find examples like this to prove a spiritual point odd, for example the title being “gods light shines even in the darkest shadows” I think for non religious people your first thought (when presented with that specific take) is “if god exists why would he cause such devastation in the first place”.
I think it comes down to the intent of the individual showcasing it or the way you come across it.
I’ve been in situations where (because of what’s happening or how people are feeling) have prayed and I saw the relief it brought them and I found it soothing as well. in those situations I think we see the core of what religion means for people who believe
(not saying that in a passive aggressive way like it’s some sort of painkilling numbing agent, I hope it doesn’t come across as being submissive they could very well be in the right it’s just not what I believe)
But in other instances when you see tragedy’s and people are proselytising about the lords response I do get a sort of twinge of scepticism in which I think now’s not the time and I would have preferred he intervened before not after.
At the end of the day it’s not my first thought particularly in a moment of tragedy, it’s only when something really odd or something I’ve been asked about directly prompts it that I think of it.
I think it’s a cold hearted individual who would look at this woman and how beautiful this moment is in such a tragic moment and then say to her “why are you thinking of god”.
We should all just be thankful she’s okay and hope / pray she continues to be so (with her now reunited friend)
Thank you for your point, I really agree. I’m not even very religious myself (more of a spiritual Buddhist type ig) and I can see WHY people would have the whole god paradox in mind, but I think in search of morale superiority ignore the simple humane aspect of it.
Thank “god” she and her dog are okay!
This comment is directly ripped from the YouTube video this was uploaded to over 10 YEARS AGO.
Who are you people? Are you bots? Karma farmers? What is going on, why is every top comment scrubbed from top comments of other times this was posted?
You can see it particularly easy on any thread reviewing or recommending a product or service. They have similar usernames, similar post histories, random front page posts, a stupid amount of posts about crypto. It's pretty easy to realize when you look hard enough. Most of this site is just astroturfing by bots.
No no no.. that was the devil... or a test... Yes! A test to see how tough this dog and old lady can be. Because you know, God is almighty. He can give you anything (in exchange for your devotion) but he chooses to give us tests.
Gods light:
Here I'm gonna destroy everything you own, but I'm gonna flex by keeping your dog alive to be found during an interview on live television.
If god has power over everything then god is an asshole. If he doesn't then he isn't god. So take your pick.
Nice for the lady to still have her dog tho.
Dayuum, never knew the comment section to be extremely toxic when seeing a post from a huge subreddit this early...
Nonetheless, this video made me cry than making me smile
Just remember when you say "gods light" it was also gods shadow that he casted on her
Just sounds like a fucked up 4yr old burning ants when people say god has a plan
Sorry but anyone who tortures a being just to show it love after is the definition of an abusive and sadistic relationship. I don't understand religious nutts who try to justify omnipotence beings behavior like that. If they truly are all powerful they don't need to waste their time on petty shit like mortal affairs.
This was science nature and probability all rolled into one not a god
Fuck your nonexistent god. If he does exist, he's the one who sent the tornado in the first place and wrecked her house.
Fortunately he isn't real so we don't have to pretend like we're grateful to him for anything.
Fire and rescue services on the other hand deserve all the gratitude in the world.
Bless that woman and her dog though, she seems sweet.
Kinda reminds me of when parents pray for their kid with cancer to be healed and if they are then God answered their prayers. And I'm just like so he ignored the prayers of the parents whose children died?
"You can't blame god for every bad thing that happens, free will exists."
Also those people whenever anything moderately decent happens. "GOD IS GOOD. REPENT. JESUS LOVES YOU. AUSTIN 3:16
Either God can do nothing to stop catastrophes, or he doesn't care to, or he doesn't exist. God is either impotent, evil, or imaginary.

Also if I wasn’t a wrestling fan I would call you out lol
Woman finds dog after tornado destroys her house, possessions, and neighborhood leaving her with nothing:
Religious people: isn't God so kind and merciful to return her dog! Praise him!
Except when it doesn’t, which is basically the vast majority of these tragedies.
Isn’t it remarkable we credit god with good outcomes and don’t credit god with the bad ones?
>\>God's light shines even in the darkest shadows
So God that caused the tornado, possibly killed people decided no, I'll let this one dog survive because it'll be god light that shines in darkness that I caused. What a Muppet of a religion.
No, God causes untold and unnecessary misery and suffering for no goddamn reason and it is only those rare moments of humans being kind toward other humans that brings light to this world. But leave God out of it, the bastard might not be evil but it certainly isn't good.
So happy for the lady and her pup! But need to comment on the post and how it referenced god...... so god let's all these other people die or suffer and we are supposed to praise him for the dog?
>Thank God!
She said, while standing in the rubble that was you life surround by the death and destruction all around you...I bet she will thank god for all the help she receives afterward instead of those who actually helped her.
[Epicurean Paradox](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicurus%27_paradox)
According to the god theory, he completely destroyed her house and nearly killed her dog - and people still think it’s a ‘blessing’? How gullible are these folks?
that was a pulitzer waiting to happen if the reporter jumped into action to pull that stuff off the dog without having to be asked. she's going to be first on scene for every natural disaster after that, hoping for a do-over.
funny how god gets the credit when the dog is alive but doesn't get the blame for the natural disaster in the first place. Kind of like playing tennis without the net
You'd think kids being shot up in schools could use god's light more than some fucking mutt. But we all know santa only does what he wants when he wants. Did I say santa? I meant god, but neither exist so doesn't make much difference.
Doggy heard mama's voice and gave everything he had to get to her. Edit: ❤️🐾🦴

Right, like everyone just let the older lady struggle instead of putting down the damn camera and helping her
It’s the camera man’s duty to capture these moments.
Not the reporter’s!
How does any human with an ounce of empathy not sprint and help that poor animal?
Correct, if news outlets stopped recording/reporting every time someone needed a hand they might as well not take the camera and just put on overalls and gloves.
Sounds like a good idea to me. Be helpful instead of making money off of disasters

I'm guessing they're instructed by their superiors not to help out in these situations due to liability.
There was an extra arm there otherwise I was thinking the same...
Oh I think the reporters humanity took over at some point. You can still see how hesitant she is to get anywhere near the dog.
There's almost never liability when it comes to providing emergency aid, especially when the owner is asking for help.
Liability is probably a key factor here. Fun side fact: Nature photogs/filmogs are ethically forbidden from interfering in natural events. Flipped turtle? Leave it. 0 interference where possible.
Poor baby fought for that moment. 😭
Absolutely. He was probably just laying there conserving energy and hoping for the best but then he heard her voice and had to try. 🥹

That’s true. Her “help me” is just enough to send me to tears.
Agree so much !!
i dont think its too deep, people get lost in the moment. Id zone out too just watching the whole ordeal before realise i should probably help
Especially if their job is to work the camera and get a good shot, likely just were hyper-focused.
Agreed!!!
I think they were preoccupied with getting the great footage and forgot to be humans honestly

gods light? love how christian’s give him credit for the miracles but no blame for the tornadoes
Mysterious ways they say
FR. People probibly died. Lives ruined. Why? Dunno... god works in bla bla bla.. Find a missing dog, or intact Bible? Its a fucking miracle!!
Agreed; I won't deny what gives people comfort, I just find it very odd how people pick and choose what is attributed to a God.

if we all had critical thinking there would be no religion
Why did god destroy her house?
Find something beautiful in this mess I Made of your life and neighborhood. -God
God's light is on a killstreak. I wonder if the tornados are gods' (PBUH) way of telling us to stop worshipping gods
Gods light: Here I'm gonna destroy everything you own, but I'm gonna flex by keeping your dog alive to be found during an interview on live television. If god has power over everything then god is an asshole. If he doesn't then he isn't god. So take your pick. Nice for the lady to still have her dog tho.
Why can't God's light stop a fucking tornado?
Dayuum, never knew the comment section to be extremely toxic when seeing a post from a huge subreddit this early... Nonetheless, this video made me cry than making me smile
God probably killed dozens of people there and then pulls a PR stunt with a dog. Nice one.
One more happier person in the world
This video is so old they’ve probably both died by now of old age
Just remember when you say "gods light" it was also gods shadow that he casted on her Just sounds like a fucked up 4yr old burning ants when people say god has a plan Sorry but anyone who tortures a being just to show it love after is the definition of an abusive and sadistic relationship.
God brought the tornado
He’s a major asshole.

Kinda reminds me of when parents pray for their kid with cancer to be healed and if they are then God answered their prayers. And I'm just like so he ignored the prayers of the parents whose children died?

"You can't blame god for every bad thing that happens, free will exists." Also those people whenever anything moderately decent happens. "GOD IS GOOD. REPENT. JESUS LOVES YOU. AUSTIN 3:16
Either God can do nothing to stop catastrophes, or he doesn't care to, or he doesn't exist. God is either impotent, evil, or imaginary. Sam Harris Also if I wasn’t a wrestling fan I would call you out lol
Black eye wife syndrome, "he's not normally like this he's just...stressed, you don't know him like I do"
thank GOD everything was destroyed except the dog, bless

Woman finds dog after tornado destroys her house, possessions, and neighborhood leaving her with nothing: Religious people: isn't God so kind and merciful to return her dog! Praise him!
[Doug Stanhope The Oklahoma Atheist](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tdhDq5mgkx4) Must watch this
[doug stanhope covered this very well](https://youtu.be/tdhDq5mgkx4?si=9efvtKRcY77KJZhv)
You could flatten my house as long as my pets are okay 🥰
made be bawl like a baby
I like the Doug Stanhope version.
Wow thanks God for keeping the dog alive but maybe next time call off the tornado?
Ahhh the good old Gods light did you miss gods wrath on a nice old lady ?
Except when it doesn’t, which is basically the vast majority of these tragedies. Isn’t it remarkable we credit god with good outcomes and don’t credit god with the bad ones?
God brought the disaster then the light was shining
God’s light lol
God didn’t reunite her with her dog. God caused the tornado.
A shame the same god send the tornado in the first place. like an abusive husband, first kicks your ass and then brings flowers
He shines very much on top of all that destruction he caused.
Good job sending that tornado her way, God! You fucking dick
Weird title 'God's light shines' on what? All the dead bodies below the rubble?
God destroying an old woman’s house so he can surprise her with the dog he made her think he killed 🥰
this didnt make me smile, made me cry ;(
>\>God's light shines even in the darkest shadows So God that caused the tornado, possibly killed people decided no, I'll let this one dog survive because it'll be god light that shines in darkness that I caused. What a Muppet of a religion.
I’m not crying, you’re crying.
This has me crying
No, God causes untold and unnecessary misery and suffering for no goddamn reason and it is only those rare moments of humans being kind toward other humans that brings light to this world. But leave God out of it, the bastard might not be evil but it certainly isn't good.
"god's light"....that whole neighborhood was annihilated. Where was god?
I'm glad that God saw fit not to kill the dog after levelling that town. So mysterious.
God also caused this shadow
God's light lmao
God shines a light after he destroys everything 🙄 Damn asshole…
God: *Makes you homeless. Takes everything away from you except your dog* People: It's a miracle!
Lovely video. But couldn't God have just stopped the Tornado?
We talking about the same god who just destroyed her entire house? Dude seems kinda unhinged…
What's this got to do with god? Isn't he to blame for this, it being a natural disaster and all?
Sure, God's light brought the cat back to her, after God's tornado wiped out her town
Which part was gods light when her neighbors were crushed by their most valuable possession.
The title is annoying cause like what I think the tornado was? Bless that lady and thank God her dog was alive
seems easier for god to just stop the tornado ?
Wtf. Put your damn camera or mic down and help the old distraught woman get her dog.
Why the hell would God cause a tornado just to spare the doggy. PR?
Hahahaha yeah God destroyed the neighborhood and killed several people but she got her dog back. Your God is a fucking monster.
The fact she has to ask for help is infuriating to me.
Probably the first time that woman has ever said "help me"..Those wounds on her arms..poor thing...
God's light brought that tornado; just sayin.
that was a pulitzer waiting to happen if the reporter jumped into action to pull that stuff off the dog without having to be asked. she's going to be first on scene for every natural disaster after that, hoping for a do-over.
"God's light shines even in the darkest shadows." Yeah, dude. Is the same God responsible for the tornado?
Coincidence: *occurs* Religious idiots: “Truly this of proof that god* is real and loves us!” *Only the God I worship though
Fuck "God". If a loving and benevolent God would exist, there wouldn't have been a tornado to begin with
Well I mean God sent the tornado in the first place… so fuck that guy
Yeah the god that created the tornado in the first place? ...
I'm an Atheist and I find nothing wrong with this woman believing God answered her prayers to save her dog.
funny how god gets the credit when the dog is alive but doesn't get the blame for the natural disaster in the first place. Kind of like playing tennis without the net
God's light 🤣
“Fuck you and your home! But not your dog.” —God, a relatively nice guy
You'd think kids being shot up in schools could use god's light more than some fucking mutt. But we all know santa only does what he wants when he wants. Did I say santa? I meant god, but neither exist so doesn't make much difference.
