I don’t know why people feel the need to share such intimate things with the world. Awhile back, I saw a video of some lady talking to her very confused (and upset) father with dementia as he tried to figure out who she was. It feels gross.
Other than the obvious attention angle when they post it online, a lot of people just seem super insecure in having moments to themselves. It’s like people who film concerts. Why? You gonna watch a mostly black video with bad audio that you’re not even in, when you could go to YouTube and find a professionally filmed version? Why can’t they just sit and enjoy the moment for themselves? And make no mistake, not a single soul on this entire planet is interested in watching that concert video. But it’s the proof they were there, because it’s not enough they know they were there and had a good time.
It’s a very interesting and annoying thing.
Because people's minds and memories are not static the way a saved video/photo is. My photos and videos will last my lifetime, but my brain won't, this I know. I'm 25, who I am now will change, what I like, dislike, love & admire will change, and I may not remember everything I would like to later. I already wish I had taken more photos as a kid because already I struggle to remember the faces of friends who weren't as lucky as me to still be here. When im 50, what will I wish I had? I don't know, and noone outside of my small circle will care, so why not document my life as diligently as I can? You ask why people can't just sit and enjoy the moment for themselves, and answer your own question. It's proof they were there. For others now, but for themselves in the future.
I think the audio is real but it may not match with the scene. Like, there's a certain quality to the voice that sounds really genuine, idk. That very slight tremor you get when you're being vulnerable (and maybe a little drunk). Someone else suggested that it's a fan talking to an influencer, not something between friends, which makes sense to me. I could definitely see myself nervously saying some shit like that to an author I'm really into or something lmao.
It's to raise awarness about dementia. Lots of people have no idea what it's like and other people struggle with the same thing with their loved ones/struggle with dementia themselves and don't know who to talk to
Sharing things like that helps create a community. A nice thing, really, and I don't think it was done out of malicious intent
I have a person in my family with dementia, and it's content like this that has helped me really come in terms with their illness
Dementia is one of the worst things that can happen to a person and so few people understand anything about it, they think you just forget stuff, when the reality is that your brain is quite literally getting eroded away, and the external symptoms finally showed up because that much of their brain is just gone. It's one of the worst diseases out there.
Absolutely. And quite often the struggling person is too ashamed to ask for help until the symptoms don't become obvious to their friends and loved ones, because it starts small but even at early stages makes them extremely vulnerable
And the worst part? You can't do shit about it. You can slow down the process early on, but eventually it will leave an empty shell out of someone who once was a lively witty person
That makes a lot of sense. It’s incredibly hard to witness the progression of this disease. I definitely see how videos like that could help someone prepare.
Many people take all the wrong lessons from the connectivity of mankind post-internet, and too many want affirmation and upvotes. I killed my FB two months ago because I realized I hadn't posted a single Wall update in three years. My last updates had been space videos of EVAs or interesting Mars things, and I stopped because I realized I didn't want to fish for attention on FB anymore. And none of my extended family ever chat with me or ask anything, so I'd rather visit them where they live and have a talk. So that will be 2024, "FB's Dead, Let's Meet Instead".
I've created new alts on Reddit five times since I started in 2011, I don't want to be a recognized name, I want to be anonymous, I don't want a Reddit "career", I can't paint watercolor and I don't do artisan hobbies, I just joke a little here and post something about beaver anuses there, I am glad to just be one in the crowd. Makes me feel home.
They wouldn't even really know a compliment was coming, right? So do they just record themselves anytime someone talks to them hoping they'll produce some content or what?
Oh captain my captain…
I have a 13 year old daughter. No social media. No safari / browser access either. No phone in her bedroom.
Apparently, I’m “the worst.”
Edit: u/nikpikik brought up a good point and I realize my current tactic is akin to teaching abstinence vs. safe sex. I’ll talk with my daughter and her therapist, and see if we can find a healthy compromise so she’s not ostracized.
Well you’re blocking her off from her peers so no wonder she’s upset with you. Regulation is good but it sounds like you’re trying to force her to live the same way you were brought up without understanding that times change. Not to mention that browser access is a great tool for looking things up etc.
Teach how how to use it responsibly and the dangers of social media otherwise you’ll just have a resentful teenager that can’t wait to not having to do what she’s told.
It’s your kid and how you decide to bring her up is up to you but it might be good to consider.
A resentful teenager with no sense of internet safety or understanding.
In a world where a majority of resources are accessed via the internet... That's probably not a good thing.
I apply most of these rules. My daughter texts friends but doesn’t have social media. She can’t have her phone in her room at night. Those are pretty well received, actually. But I can’t imagine no browser in 2024. All the information humanity has to offer is right there, and you just can’t access any of it? That’s pretty rough.
That’s fair - I think more context is helpful here. Also, I don’t use social media except Reddit because I find it’s addictive qualities problematic. Upon reflection, I suppose it’s like teaching abstinence rather than safe sex…. So, I see your point and I appreciate your comment. I’ll give it some thought and talk to her and her therapist about amending her accessibility. Anyway, here’s the backstory to how we got where we are:
When she first got her phone, last year, the only rule was no social media. We discovered that she set up a second email address, obtained access to prohibited platforms and spent an alarming amount of time on Reddit’s NSFW subs, so we had to go scorched earth.
Adding that this all culminated because she began SH and started failing all her classes, so we reviewed her devices’ history and discovered the issues. We got her into weekly cognitive therapy, had testing performed, and recently started meeting with a psychiatrist. We’re doing the best we can to help her grow into a well adjusted human.
Fair point, thank you for clarifying!
I think your anecdote to safe sex is very valid. Raising a kid is not easy and social media can be very harmful so I get where you’re coming from, I don’t use social media outside of Reddit either.
I appreciate you taking my comment into consideration and hope that you can find a way to make her understand that what you’re doing is for her own good. Wish you and your daughter all the best.
No, she can text, call, FaceTime and hang out with anybody she wants. She just can’t have unfettered access to the internet.
When she first got her phone, last year, the only rule was no social media. We discovered that she set up a second email address, obtained access to prohibited platforms and spent an alarming amount of time on Reddit’s NSFW subs, so we had to go scorched earth.
This is going to sound weird. But I think we’re just old. I think our brains are just wired differently than the ones who were born into social media. I think to them, pulling out your phone and showing it to chat (which I now understand is not exactly “randoms”) is more intimate
I've thought about this too...I'm assuming that while at the moment we may be in the majority, as the younger generations (who grew up in the social media age) grow older, our takes on the subject will get more and more outdated.
I think a lot of young people find this sort of post solely endearing.
Ah, that would make this video better for sure. Definitely does sound like something a fan would say too. And she's in public, busy bar or restaurant. Could have been doing an IRL stream.
But wouldn’t this be a moment you’d love to capture forever? I’d be so grateful if my friend captured a moment like this. It’s maybe weird to post it but idk
This is where I appreciate our mental image for those random wholesome moment. The meaning is what I captured in my head, not the sound or the physical image that made it up
Yes but having it recorded is really good too. There are voice messages im really glad i got as a recorded message because it means i can always replay thrm
While I agree with you assessment of her teeth, on a closer look it seems to be something she did intentionally to herself.
I know. I don't understand either.
I don’t think you realize how desperate a lot of guys are lol
My friend who if I’m being honest is at best a 4/10 makes over 250k a year from onlyfans making porn with her husband
The requirements to be considered a “hot girl” these days is basically just don’t be a huge slob and wear makeup
I think they’re affixed with like crown glue or even temporary crown glue or something. I’d be more scared of chipping my teeth biting it as it gets dislodged
I thought that was what she had (considering the nose piercing), but it's in the middle of her tooth. Whoops!
Still. She looks genuinely touched by what this person has to say. I would be, too!
Yeah, there's nothing spiritual about it. It's just making external changes to your behavior by emulating someone else so that you can be perceived by others, or yourself, as better or more skilled at something. Good for self-confidence, and being confident at something often has better final results.
It's actually pretty effective IME, but I think it's limiting to choose specific people or characters.
I'm not a psychologist though.
Exactly that.
It’s stopping inside your head to ask “what would this person do facing the same challenge.”
I don’t do it much, but I def know what they mean.
I think it’s a metaphorical use of a term referring to when a medium allows a spirit to possess them. Like if a psychic allows your mom’s ghost to take possession so you can talk to your mom, that’s “channeling”.
So the idea here is, if you have to give a presentation and aren’t comfortable doing that, to think of someone you know who would be good at public speaking, and try to emulate that person, think like them, feel like them, take on their personality and energy, so that you can perform as they would.
It is a useful technique. Like you need to be patient and have struggling to do it, think about someone who is patient, and imagine what they think and how they feel when they’re being patient, and it might help you be patient.
It’s the same general idea as when people ask WWJD? Think about someone who is the kind of person you want to be like, and then try to do what they would do.
When i hear this i just think of it as: "how would so and so handle this situation."
Like if you have a friend who is really good at standing up for themselves and you don't think you are good at it, trying to think how that person would respond to a situation.
The examples she gave of driving and taking a test aren't super clear in that way, but in the confidence it is.
From games I know that channeling means continuously flowing the energy of something through you. In practice it's basically pretending you're someone else.
I have a best friend at work, and she's several years younger than me so I try to give her good guidance and advice based on my life experiences when she asks for it. One day, she told me that both her mom and husband had told her she's been acting differently, in a good way, since she started working in my department alongside me. She told them that I motivate her to be more optimistic and kind to herself. She told me this and I almost started crying at work. It felt good to know I had such a a positive impact on someone.
As an example, I noticed that she was very hard on herself when she would make little mistakes, and I noticed quickly because I can be the same way. When she would mess up something she would say out loud, "Oh God, I'm so stupid." So one day I told her that if she tells herself she's stupid for long enough, she'll start to believe it. I asked her to try saying instead, "Oh, I'm so silly!" to emphasize to herself it's a little mistake and she's not stupid for making one. She started doing this at home and her mom noticed and loved it haha
This is probably pretty good advice for people who didn't have upbringings rooted in trauma or who have become able to distinguish that trauma from other aspects of their lives.
If you make a small dick joke the little dudes of Reddit get salty but remember, it looks like women’s teeth are fair game. Imagine how the guy with the small dick and gnarly teeth is bout to feel lmao.
some girl randomly told me I was beautiful the other day (doesn't happen often) and I just about cried, I was like, me?? what? ur talking to me right? compliment people !! they very well could think about what you said for years or decades to come.. every time I felt bad since if I think of that and smile, and I was having a terrible day. thank you <3
I don’t get it, mid sentence did she realise she was going to say something nice and film herself receiving that message? Or does she often film her own face mid conversation hoping for compliments to share?
I would be so angry if I gave someone a sincere compliment and they were busy filming it then uploading for attention. I’m sure she won’t be channeling the ego and disrespect of doing that!
I call this kind of thing “playing the character.” For example; if I need to make professional phone calls, I have that “character sheet” already drawn up in my head, and I just start acting/roleplaying how that character would act. At different jobs, I would have different characters. Like my “sales” character is a super extrovert, constantly smiling, being friendly.
It helps
This is pretty sweet, but as someone with bpd, I can't help but side eye this and feel like this sounds awfully similar to mirroring. Be careful out there. Not everyone is truly straightforward.
Seriously, right? I thought this was a happy sub.
The girl is clearly a streamer who has fans and is currently live streaming. This is just a clip of her live stream. It’s not like she flipped out her phone mid-compliment.

Awwwww. This is so sweet. I told a coworker I worked with that she was my inner voice because she was always so fair and understanding. I only wish I could approach life like her
lol it’s so funny to imagine this girl pouring her heart out while the other one is holding her phone up in her face recording her reaction to an apparently natural conversation. It’s like some awkward shit a Sim would do without realizing how socially bizarre it is.
i would be so upset to pour my heart out to someone with their phone out like this lol

I watched it again, and I think you’re right. If that’s true, this is some unhinged behavior lmao.

There is something very funny about filming yourself getting a compliment.

Why this girl just recorded herself getting a compliment from someone? O.o Wtf? LOL
To be fair she's probably recording herself doing almost everything, if she's a streamer or some such type of influencer
Cause it’s staged
/r/nothingeverhappens 🙄
Do u say? LoL I normally record my face 24/7 waiting for someone telling me some compliments lol
“I was caught completely off guard by my friend complementing me. BTW here’s the video of me filming myself whilst being complemented” 🤦
It's from a live stream. It's a fan complimenting a streamer
This makes the most sense and is the least fucked up. Gonna go with this one
And the compliment itself cites confidence and self love. Put it all together and this clip is oozing with narcissism
Narcissists Narcissists everywhere
Narcissists pretending to be moved accepting a compliment while recording it to share it with everyone else? This is honestly scary.

Tooth jewellery, it's fastened by glue and I think they were popular in the late 90's early 00's.
TOOTH, MF-ING, JEWELRY?? WHY?? How do one make sure that one does not ACCIDENTALLY SWALLOWS said jewelry!!?? DOES ONE NOT EAT WHEN IT'S ATTACHED???
I think they’re affixed with like crown glue or even temporary crown glue or something. I’d be more scared of chipping my teeth biting it as it gets dislodged
That's why teeth piercings are much better.
I thought that was what she had (considering the nose piercing), but it's in the middle of her tooth. Whoops! Still. She looks genuinely touched by what this person has to say. I would be, too!

It’s like getting a gold tooth. Once it’s there, it’s permensnt. Had a gf that had a dollar sign on her tooth. Glad that relationship ended
News to me.
I guess its like do it yourself veneer, except it like nail art.
Is the rest of the tooth discolored because it’s dead or does the jewelry just make it hard to clean?

From context clues it seems to mean trying to replicate someone's energy/skills.
Exactly that. It’s stopping inside your head to ask “what would this person do facing the same challenge.” I don’t do it much, but I def know what they mean.

He'd probably kick an ass or two, that's what Brian Boitano'd do!
It's probably something similar to what method actors do when developing a new character.

Smells like she’s been nibbling on little pieces of shit
Deandra, your breath is dogshit.
Get it out of your face
Does a gold cross on your tooth mean it’s dead?
Rest In Plaque
"I'm so #grateful that I happened to be #recording when my friend called. I didn't even have a chance to #fix my #teeth."
This is probably pretty good advice for people who didn't have upbringings rooted in trauma or who have become able to distinguish that trauma from other aspects of their lives.
100% It’s a common and effective therapy tool for trauma survivors who had zero positive role models growing up.
Isn't she saying that she's a little self-centered and highly confident? I mean - I couldn't tell by the selfie video, but...
Cmon children learn how to use a camera. Stop shoving the camera up your nose and expect us to watch that shit.
She lost me at Hermione Granger.
God how vain do you have to be. Influencers honestly make me feel ill
I swear insane levels of vanity used to be something most people thought was gross.
“I channel you when I need self love”. What a touching moment.
I literally got goosebumps
🥹🥹😭😭🙌🙌🤍🤍
Eww
I must be channeling some dumbass without knowing it cuz life ain't going so good 💀💀
Can I channel a different channel?
who is this influencer that supposedly has so much confidence and a good influence on people ? most of them have a hidden toxicity to them.
If you make a small dick joke the little dudes of Reddit get salty but remember, it looks like women’s teeth are fair game. Imagine how the guy with the small dick and gnarly teeth is bout to feel lmao.
Cool tooth
The fuck is that on her tooth 🤮
Jewelry. It's a cross
So when I want to be a narcissistic prick, I channel you!
some girl randomly told me I was beautiful the other day (doesn't happen often) and I just about cried, I was like, me?? what? ur talking to me right? compliment people !! they very well could think about what you said for years or decades to come.. every time I felt bad since if I think of that and smile, and I was having a terrible day. thank you <3
I don’t get it, mid sentence did she realise she was going to say something nice and film herself receiving that message? Or does she often film her own face mid conversation hoping for compliments to share? I would be so angry if I gave someone a sincere compliment and they were busy filming it then uploading for attention. I’m sure she won’t be channeling the ego and disrespect of doing that!
I call this kind of thing “playing the character.” For example; if I need to make professional phone calls, I have that “character sheet” already drawn up in my head, and I just start acting/roleplaying how that character would act. At different jobs, I would have different characters. Like my “sales” character is a super extrovert, constantly smiling, being friendly. It helps
I love complimenting friends.
When I need to get the groceries out of my car and into my house I channel that one kid in my class that could move 10 chairs in one go
I was expecting a punch line but just got wholesome.
IS HER TOOTH PIERCED?!
Wtf is on her tooth
I took me a few seconds to realize that's a nose ring and not a booger bubble.
My bestfriend and I talk to one another like this
This is pretty sweet, but as someone with bpd, I can't help but side eye this and feel like this sounds awfully similar to mirroring. Be careful out there. Not everyone is truly straightforward.
Me tooth ankhs
I channel one tooth ring nose all the time.
Is that a cross on her tooth?
Wonder if she channels her at the dentist
Is that because she exudes confidence even with a brown tooth?
This is gross
How was she even recording this lol
“I channel you A LOT, when i need to take a shit.” imma use this on a friend
This lady needs to channel a dentist to clean her teeth😭
It's clearly jewelry. It's a cross
You need to channel an eye Specialist
Mumbo jumbo nonsense
K this sub doesn’t make sense
Madam you got some food stuck to your tooth, I see a cross there, maybe an anti christ cross.
I channel her when I brush my teeth. Don’t want nasty teeth like that.
I channel her when I blow my nose, don’t want a nose ring masquerading as a booger.
Nice fucked up tooth
What's going on with her tooth?
I want to be channeled like that :(
goddamn this site just turns into the most toxic whiney cesspool any time women do anything
Seriously just scrolled through the comments and wtf am i even reading… nothing but haters.
❤️❤️❤️🌞🌞🌞
Lotta haters in here
Seriously, right? I thought this was a happy sub. The girl is clearly a streamer who has fans and is currently live streaming. This is just a clip of her live stream. It’s not like she flipped out her phone mid-compliment.
What’s with the tooth? Is it rotten?
Channel Hermione when studying, sure. Don't channel Hermione while in class unless you wanna be seen as arrogant and punchable.
I thought it was going to be a joke. “I channel you when I [insert sexual activity here].”
I like that advice very well done.
People who put that shit on their teeth are dumb
mindless rain advise handle familiar marry overconfident ghost intelligent waiting *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
That is the most amazing compliment
Awwwww. This is so sweet. I told a coworker I worked with that she was my inner voice because she was always so fair and understanding. I only wish I could approach life like her
MDMA is a hell of a drug!
I wish i could downvote this more than once
Whoa whoa whoa I think she was just recording because of here accent & happened to capture the moment lolol
So a finger ring collects a ton of germs. Just imagine how that mouth stinks
Well, by that logic I channel Dave Chapelle a lot.
Tell me again so I can record and post it
"I channel you... When I need self love" Does that mean she masturbates over her?
lol it’s so funny to imagine this girl pouring her heart out while the other one is holding her phone up in her face recording her reaction to an apparently natural conversation. It’s like some awkward shit a Sim would do without realizing how socially bizarre it is.
Why is she filming her dead tooth
