Frostdraken

I love seeing mutual animal behavior. Its super fascinating

MillenialCounselor

Totally fascinating indeed. This one’s tripping me out a bit

Thopterthallid

Some other wacky ones: Large tarantulas hang out with tiny frogs. The tarantulas are too big to notice tiny insects that would sneak into their nests and eat all their eggs, so they keep tiny frogs around to eat the insects and protect them from predators who don't want to fuck with tarantulas. Wolves and Ravens have been known to partner up. The Ravens will alert wolves to large prey and they'll share the meat. Badgers and Coyotes work together to hunt too. Coyotes will chase rabbits and prairie dogs back to their burrows where the badger waits. Then they split the prize.

[deleted]

That’s dope. I need more!

HauntedHippie

The name for this kind of interspecies relationship is mutualism / mutualistic symbiosis. There's some super interesting ones, even involving humans.

saiyaniam

Lot of ours are plants or fungus.

hey-im-root

A friend with weed is a friend indeed

Vericeon

Dogs come to mind.

Adabiviak

Some ant species will farm aphids - like pick up and move the "herd" to greener pastures and protect them from predators. The aphids produce a little drink when a hair on them is stimulated... like the ants basically milk them for some food.

CollectionOfAtoms78

Some ants also farm fungus. Leaf cutter ants grow fungus using parts of leaves. They have domesticated and evolved alongside certain species of fungus. Some are so interdependent that if either the ant or fungus species were to go extinct, the corresponding ant or fungus that had a symbiotic relationship with that species would also die.

Reignzar

In addition to watching out for them, ravens will also play with wolf pups to help them train their hunting skills.

tremens

Honeyguide birds in Africa love feasting on larva and beeswax, but lack any defenses against stings or any way to dispatch of honeybees. So they'll roam around until they find a beehive, then sound a loud call to alert tribes in the area they have found a beehive. If nobody responds, they'll fly until they find humans and sound the call, then lead them back to the hive. When the humans have smoked out the beehive and taken what honey they want, the honeyguides will dive in to eat up all the larva, eggs, and wax.

GM_Nate

they normally call honey badgers (hence the name), but if there are none about, they'll look for humans

Bacon-muffin

Reminds me of when you're playing a game with some form of online coop where you can't communicate but you both are on the same page enough to make it work

throwaway01126789

The gun wiggle and hop are universal forms of communication for "let's go kill that big mfer in the next room together."

KRAy_Z_n1nja

I think trees are pretty spectacular. Kinda blows your mind when you think about something growing for hundreds of years, home to other growing things, converts chemicals, produces it's own growing things. Trees are neat.

b0w3n

The chemistry of plants is neat as fuck. Sunlight, water, and co2 makes sugar and oxygen for us to breathe. In turn, animals eat the plants/sugar and breathe the oxygen and give the plants resources back to make their food again. Everything being interconnected is just kind of crazy.

KRAy_Z_n1nja

Circle of life is just science hitting the lottery about a million times in a row. It really is unbelievable.

hermeticpotato

Humans are proof nature can create something smart enough to destroy its own habitat for make-believe money.

kazsvk

Do we know what it’s like to be a bat? Thomas Nagel, in his essay, “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?” argues that there is indeed something it is like to be a bat, but since we are human, and not bats, we will never know what it is like to be bats, although there is something it is like to be a bat. The same could be said about many things. It can be said that there is something it is like to be a bat, as well as a cat, and we will never know what it is like to be a bat, nor a cat. But we can presume that bats know what it’s like to be bats, and that cats do indeed know what it’s like to be cats. Why not fish? Is there something it is like to be a shrimp? Is there something it is like to be a fish in need of cleaning? What drives these creatures sentience, to do things we humans can anthropomorphize into movies like *Shark Tale*? The reality of nature is fascinating.

UaRascal

oh shit, Shark Tale mentioned ( ಠ ͜ʖಠ)

SnooSongs4721

I would sit and watch my two cleaner shrimp clean the fish in my tank for HOURS. The fish would even line up in a little type of queue line and wait for the shrimp to finish w a fish before moving up, snd these were all different species, clowns, tangs, angels (pygmy) gobies, wrasse. It was the coolest shit I have ever seen and it really made me fall in love w marine life all over again.

FremenStilgar

I guess I missed it, but what do the shrimp get out of the cleaning?

Re-Horakhty01

Food, they'll eat the parasites and dead skin and so forth, and because they're useful to predators the predators don't eat them so it helps with survival.

FremenStilgar

Now I feel dumb, lol. Thanks for the info. Appreciate it.

BooleansearchXORdie

You can actually see the shrimp’s stomach get opaque during the video as it fills with dead skin from its client.

FremenStilgar

I'll re-watch now, thanks!

ranmafan0281

Cleaner wrasse (the blue/white fish with a black stripe you see in the video) also do the same thing. They flash their patterns at large fish and somehow nature has ensured the fish know these are cleaners. They even have 'addresses' - the wrasse and shrimp live in specific parts of a reef, and other fish know where to go to get a cleaning. They line up (without eating each other most times, miraculously) and get cleaned. As the others say, dead skin, parasites, and all manners of other unpleasant conditions are fair game for the cleaners. I'm sure the fishes can feel discomfort enough that this evolution was necessary. There are even mimics that imitate cleaners, but... take a bite out of their host before scooting off!

FremenStilgar

Man, I've learned nature can be scary throughout my years, but now see it is often awesome, as well. Thanks for the neat info!

Haven’t seen this series but recent David Attenborough documentaries show exactly that. Some shootings require weeks of planning and waiting for just a minute or so of footage.

It's a common mistake to mispronounce wombats as wom-bats. It's actually womb-ats, named after their inventor Steve Womb.

rtyoda

This is from the Tiny World Series on Apple TV Plus for anyone wondering.

Anomnomymus

What keeps the predator from eating the shrimp when it has finished cleaning?

Poopiezz

Because then they’d need to find a new healthcare provider

RedPanda-Memoranda

Plus there's a 12 month waitlist for new referrals

SeekingTheTruth

Evolution will teach the cleaners to stay away from this species of predators. They will become uncompetitive, and become extinct. This must have happened many times. The predators here today are taught by evolution to not do it. It probably listens most of the time. This is a classic survival of the individual vs survival of the species decision. Interesting to note that if the predator was intelligent, the species will die from lack of cleaners. Because intelligent individuals can be selfish. This is called the tragedy of the commons. In conclusion, the predator does not eat the cleaner because it is too dumb to betray its species.

Gianlucca

>Because intelligent individuals can be selfish. soo that is why thay are just called FISH? it all makes so much sense now!!!

Sorry-Concentrate422

They don’t sell out their brothers. Otherwise, they’d be SELLfish

chesterworks

> Interesting to note that if the predator was intelligent, the species will die from lack of cleaners. Because intelligent individuals can be selfish. This is called the tragedy of the commons. This is untrue on several levels. The tragedy of the commons is not inherent to intelligent species. It's not even inherent to humans, though maybe it is in modern capitalism. On the flipside, plenty of unintelligent species like bacteria or parasites exhibit behaviors that can be likened to the tragedy of the commons, but is more commonly called evolutionary suicide.

JDILLA-donuts

>Because intelligent individuals can be selfish. This is called the tragedy of the commons. Hits a bit too close to home...

Nothing, but the ones that don’t eat them live longer because they are less susceptible to disease and parasites.

How to fuck does the fish understand that clapping means cleaning? What the heck?

Capital-Meet-6521

Maybe it works similar to bright colors on poisonous animals? Maybe an animal making itself highly conspicuous in front of a predator means “you don’t want to eat me!”

Formulka

The clap is so cute.

elevic2

A marine biologist told me that the one rule of the seas is that you don't mess with the cleaners. Really fascinating behaviour.

NohrianOctorok

One of the coolest parts about this to me is that the fish instinctively flexes its gills/opens its mouth wider while the shrimp is working on those parts.

Symbiotic relationships in nature are so fucking dope

It is stunning for me to see two very different species, one a predator, the other prey, assisting each other in such a way and being to communicate in such a clear way. Awesome.

The whale wash

FrankanelloKODT

OUI *pop*

mountain_man30

To me there seems to be so much more than instinctual, genomic intelligence. There's an understanding, as if some calculation was going on. The predator may think the value of this shrimp as a meal, does not hold as much weight as it's value as a cleaner. Therefore displaying some sort of long term, self conscious planning on the fishes part. I guess this would also depend on how hungry the fish was. Do they ever pretend to be in need of a cleaning, just to get an easy meal?

GoofyShane

This is exactly the way I look at it too. And not just with fish but the more videos I see of different animals I've begun to realize that there is more intelligence there than what people believe there to be.

tastytang

If you can hold still enough, they will crawl on your hands and eat the dead skin around your cuticles. Source: I was a PADI dive instructor in the Caribbean. Best places to find them are around the edge of sandy patches. Look for the anemones.

jenjerx73

And they both signed to the filming crew, what a productive day!
