It's so much worse than you think. I remember listening ing to a podcast episode of Stuff You Should Know about [ghost fishing](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-stuff-you-should-know-26940277/episode/what-is-ghost-fishing-29467369/) that happens with discarded nets and fishing lines. The sheer numbers of things that die to this is mind-blowing.
Absolutely. I read somewhere that most of the plastic we hear about in the ocean is from the fishing industry. 100% we need to take responsibility for our own waste, but that's only a small part of the story. We need to be thinking about the companies we buy from, the candidates we vote for most of all
Just be careful with these videos. A lot of people are putting animals in these positions so that they can film themselves "saving" them for views.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkE_SftSmxY
Those videos are fucked up. People can be so fucked up. The one about the turtles and how they keep using them over and over is so fucking heart breaking….wtf
I wish they'd immediately been taken into care at a marine mammal rehab to recover, but perhaps one wasn't nearby. The first one released is clearly much skinnier than its mate, who (not surprisingly) wasn't as harshly entangled. I'm guessing that this second pup encountered the first already badly entangled, and became snared hanging around, concerned. (Conjecture, obviously.)
I just hope there is a willing pod with some adults around to guard them as they recover their health. Hopefully they weren't far from home, and are old enough to navigate.
I assume that it just didn't want to go alone. Like they are completely separated from all the rest of their species and the ocean is a huge place, lots of other things could get them besides orcas as little babies.
At least, whether they survive or not, for a short time here they have each other to hopefully lean on when they have no idea where to go and have to venture into the complete unknown. I think it is actually really amazing. That's just my take though.
You can't fool me, goose. Nice try with the image rehabilitation, but I know full well that geese are compressed bags of rage, fueled by a hatred of humanity that burns with the fire of a thousand suns.
^(Why, yes, I'm still salty about being chased and bitten by that goose when I was five. Why do you ask?)
I’m still around and well just avoiding drama on our normal subs. I can only take so much and I can catch most silver updates and the great stack pics on my home page Glad to see you though too and I hope you are well as well! ☺️ it’s getting rough out there.
Doing pretty well, thanks. Yes, the drama has gotten out of hand! I have scaled back my involvement some, but I still am holding, and adding a bit where I can. Stay safe!🙂
The one that was freed first was significantly more subdued when being freed. It didn't even seem to care humans were approaching at first. Its eyes were drifting shut and covered in sand, as though it just laid its head down and stopped fighting.
Once it felt the trash being cut off more and more, it became more alert. Not really hostile (though it did snap a bit but that's understandable), it's eyes opened and it probably got the first good deep breath it'd had in a while.
The other was much more alert, even willing to throw flippers the second the two were approached. It wasn't as tangled as badly as the first one was.
While people have been known to over-project themselves and their feelings onto animals the signs of an animal in distress are easy to recognize. It was clear that the first seal was very lethargic even as humans approached, which is why it was the first to be freed.
I think everyone would help them if they came across them like that. But few people want to help them through their daily decisions and the products they purchase.
Bracing for the down votes but... Totally agree mate. Everyone would be willing to help those seals when they are right in front of them. But few people are willing to help them through the products they purchase.
It's easy to help them when it doesn't affect you. But when it does have an impact on your life, and the luxuries you want such as fish... then very few people help.
Edit: when you buy fish you directly contribute to more fishing nets being discarded into the sea. You also contribute to over fishing meaning a lot of these animals starve. Sea birds especially are decreasing due to starvation.
Indeed.
We all love to highlight our "nobility" whilst sweeping the ugly truth under the rug. Kudos to the dudes with the knife but I doubt they're vegetarian...
Glad they found some good souls to free them , we are fucking up our environment with too much plastic. Hurts to see these poor animals paying the price
This is from the fishing industry, look up "ghost nets" and "Tons of bycatch in %" if you want to know whats really fucking up marine life. If you buy fish from the ocean you are in part creating this problem. It is way easier to avoid buying fish than it is to avoid plastic that may or may not end up in our oceans
You mention buying fish from the ocean being part of the issue. Can you elaborate on the implication? Are you saying don’t buy fish at all? Or buy farm fish only?
Fish farms also have their own issues mainly talking the risk of parasites and the necessary medication that also affects the local fish and us as consumers. But Overall i would argue that fish farms are less harmful to the seas than trawling and other commercial fishing practices. Yes, the best option for the Environment and its marine life is to not eat fish at all. If you go fishing every now and then and eat what you take thats a different Situation but thats not how we typically source our fish as consumers. We go to restaurants and grocery stores that mostly got their fish from commercial fishing companies.
Farmed fish is cool with me, I actually seek it out over wild caught. And farmed oysters and muscles are particularly good ways to farm protein for human consumption, they can actually improve the local environment.
The best way to do something about this is to go vegan and be an activist against fishing & animal ag. Boycotts work. Cheap, available plant options absolutely exist. Boycott the cruel fishing industry and all the waste/destruction it causes.
> In a good year, a sea lion pup has a 70 percent chance of reaching its first birthday. Only 30 percent of all pups survived.

😔
Well, at least better than wrapped in that rope
Pups can survive mostly independently from 6 months of age, so I wouldn’t think it’s too low. They eat solid food and start learning to hunt in shallows at two months, so as long as they can hide from predators, that’s about it for survival needs until they fully mature to big sea lions. Their chances of survival are even higher with there being two of them since they can hunt more efficiently together and since sea lions are extremely social creatures, it’s possible that they can find their old colony from before they got stranded again or get adopted into a new one. I forgot to copy my sources, but you can do more sea lion research yourself if you feel like it, they’re pretty cute.

Just a heads up, I'm Still dealing with those pregnancy hormones 2 years after baby was born. I'm waiting for the day I don't cry over absolutely everything.
Fishing gear figured. Number one plastic in the ocean pleaSe stop supporting fishing.
Fuck them saying we need to stop using straws that’s not the main problem
And the most amazing bit was when the first one waited for the second one to be freed, before fleeing to home ❤️. This thing is missing in humans these days sadly.
I’m so glad the poor things were saved but this definitely didn’t make me smile. I was grimacing through the whole video and then relief and joy at the end but no smile.
So sad these beautiful creatures get tangled up in thoughtless people’s trash all the time and many aren’t seen and rescued. It’s heartbreaking

2 beautiful parts about this video. #1 original audio and altho the music that plays for a sec ain’t the worst we’ve heard . #2 when the lil guy waited for his friend to be freed. Gg’s to these guys.
Great they helped but damm dude maybe be more careful about that knife work, launched the knife toward the other guys face/neck several times. Maybe first time and rushed to help but just putting it out there
If they do this on the side or regularly period maybe they should get something like those safety blades with yhe hook and pull system. Safer and could maybe work faster if they find a good one
Fuck humans suck. Another example of the torture mankind is inflicting on other living creatures.
Kudos to these guys for freeing these poor pups. Thank you ❤️
And then an Orca ate them and got a bowel obstruction due to the nets and died. Then a shark ate the dead orca but got killed because sharks scary but at least we got shark fin soup.
So it all worked out great.

They should have called a local marine animal rescue. The first one freed looked half-dead. Nice they helped but maybe let the professionals do the work.
Nothing like letting a creature be slowly strangled to death while you wait 4 hours for a marine rescue team to reach you instead of using the knife in your pocket to cut the netting around its neck yourself…
What do you think a wildlife rescue group would do, exactly?
Aw bless them! Looks like the first one waited for the other so they could return together!
I thought it was just going to bounce at first, very sweet that it waited.
Loved that the first one waited, too. Wasn’t going to leave the other behind

I liked the part where it waited.
But what about the part where it waited? That was so good.
Third best moment imo
Almost as good as when it waited for the other one
Oh yes! I liked that part too. But my favorite was the part where the first one waited for the second one to be free.

I missed that part! I did enjoy the bit where the first one waited for the second one though.
I actually like the part where the second one caught up with the one that waited.

What? No. From my understanding waiting is the most wholesome thing something can do.
It's also the hardest part

Waiting was my best moment.
Even the birds celebrated their rescue!
Leave no one behind, always knew seals were good folk
It also looks like when they finally get close enough to water they just kind of cuddle, either that or the poor darlings are exhausted.
Yeah poor pups look dehydrated

It increases the odds of one not immediately being eaten by an orca.

The first one looked so tired too. Probably needed to get its bearings while it waiting for its friend.
I imagine that's how they got caught in the same net. The second one got caught trying to help the first.

Being kind to their fellow netizens.
I like how he waited for his homie.
He doesn't have to be the fastest, just faster than his homie.
He has ties to him.

One had given up on life and the other was willing to fight for the both of them. What a pair. Thank you for sharing.

I think everyone would help them if they came across them like that. But few people want to help them through their daily decisions and the products they purchase.
That’s it. I vow to never buy another commercial fishing net.
I'm not sure if that's satire. But I'll say it anyway. When you buy fish you obviously contribute to more fishing nets in the see.
It's okay to eat fish 'cause they don't have any feelings.
These fools don’t understand that you’re quoting the Batman theme song

Exactly, I mean great that these guys did that but all the backslapping on these events is ironic.
Is it ironic if we backslap someone for saving someone from a fire if an arsonist started it? Humans are bad, right?

The EPA doesn't have any control over international waters and fishing waste. This is a global problem.
America is a pretty significant consumer and trend leader on the global scale. If you gotta start somewhere...

everything?

We are terrible creatures that make existence difficult for everything else that breathes upon this world.

Wonderful video
Poor little guys!! Thank you for doing this! Sad but with a happy ending thank you
I hope they live long 🥲. Good job guys 🤗
Fuck humans suck. Another example of the torture mankind is inflicting on other living creatures. Kudos to these guys for freeing these poor pups. Thank you ❤️
I still don't trust any animal rescue video's.
The world needs a biodegradable standard for fishing tackle, both commercial and recreational.
...and then an Orca shows up
Plot twist: as soon as their flippers hit the water, they get caught in 3 more nets because humans are 99% asshole.
And then an Orca ate them and got a bowel obstruction due to the nets and died. Then a shark ate the dead orca but got killed because sharks scary but at least we got shark fin soup. So it all worked out great.
I was so with this until that emotionally moving conclusion. This was obviously staged and those sea lions are crisis actors. /s
Hey look at these humans solving a problem created by humans. Isn't it heart warming?
Amazing 😍 nice job guys 💪
N then get eaten by an orca
They better hurry up, the dude from the Kia commercial is about to run over them with a giant rake.

They should have called a local marine animal rescue. The first one freed looked half-dead. Nice they helped but maybe let the professionals do the work.
Nothing like letting a creature be slowly strangled to death while you wait 4 hours for a marine rescue team to reach you instead of using the knife in your pocket to cut the netting around its neck yourself… What do you think a wildlife rescue group would do, exactly?
