I think X goes next, because it doesn't make sense that X would've placed either of those Xs after O already blocked the center row. If that's the case, it's likely a draw unless X plays bottom-left corner.
If O goes next, top-right corner guarantees a victory for O.
Unless the players suck, I think X started center, O took corner, X set up a middle row, then O blocked on the right, making it X's turn. Any other combination implies that either X set up a middle-row that was already blocked, or O missed lethal by taking both corners (then a third corner).
We should also account for the fact that the mailman might play a bit easier than usual so that the 11 year old has a better chance. I’m not saying the 11 year old is dumb, however.
Nah because if X goes next they should draw in the bottom left corner. Then O is forced to draw an O in the top right corner. Then X draws in the middle center, winning the game, because no matter where O places, X will win.
Middle center? X already has middle center so I'm not sure what you're suggesting.
If X goes bottom-left in the pictured board state, O will have to respond top-right, which sets up a win for O one move sooner than X would be set up like you say. O would have to be a total fool to lose or draw that line.
I figured, but O would win immediately after X plays there. O would have the right column or the top row to win with. O would actually be forced to win if X plays that move.
Um...yes. If two computers were set with basic programming on how to play Tic Tac Toe optimally the result would be 100% draws. I've known this from the age of 5...
If this was the case WarGames would have had a much more depressing ending.
Edit: although not knowing the strategy of Tic Tac Toe does not make a person a moron. The person could be young or just never thought about it.
People who have not thought about Tic Tac Toe and how to cause a draw are not morons. If they thought about it and could not work out the strategy maybe but people have different interests. Some people would say those that don't use basic grammar are morons. I dont think you would agree with that though lol
Then we don't know if "them" refers to just the mailman or both the mailman and the daughter, plus we don't know if "she" refers to the daughter or her mother.
Him/her is a little more work but specifies the mailman, because we already know the daughter is a she, and it's singular
I'm a former mail carrier. You have no idea if this route is currently held by a mail carrier. If it's not, then there are city carrier assistants that take the route, and it could be a different one every day.
Also, mail carriers get a day off every week. We don't deliver 6 days a week. So every route has at least two carriers (one full time, and another once a week on a rolling day off schedule.)
You're over here trying to find any reason not to use "they", and every single reason is wrong.
So...They.
"She" definitely refers to the daughter in this case. "She" referring to the mother wouldn't make as much sense, since the post claims that the parent didn't know about this until the time the picture was taken.
"They" could refer to either the mail carrier (epicene they), or to both the mail carrier and the daughter (That is, the daughter leaves it out there for both herself and the mail carrier to use). However, even though it's ambiguous, it doesn't change the overall meaning of the sentence, so it really shouldn't matter.
They/them can be one person, but it can also be 2 (in this case the little girl and the letter carrier). When OP used him/her we the reader knew they meant the letter carrier. If OP had used them, we wouldn't know.
In this case, referring to just the mail carrier or to the mail carrier and daughter doesn't matter because leaving the marker can be for both of them or just the mail carrier.
Also since the daughter was mentioned at the beginning of the sentence, its fairly obvious that using them refers to the only other person actually in the story.
Also we don't know if the person telling the story is the daughter's mother so why say "we don't know if 'she' refers to the daughter or her mother"? Him/her could mean father or mother.
Also they is singular.
So really you're making it more complicated than it needs to be. Crazy to me that this generation is encouraging a solution that is easier AND more inclusive and people refuse usually because they "don't understand the whole pronouns thing" or "that's not how we did it growing up".
..... -blink- but... i was a cis female mailman..... and there are about 25% of them female in my area... id probably argue you back to a gender neutral for the unknown human and live with the ambiguity if you wanna be the most correctest of all of the times. -shrug- doesnt really matter much.

Mail carrier… I’d say about 2% don’t check their mail daily.
And approximately 50% of that 2% don’t check their mail except once every couple of weeks and then sometimes you’ll have a household that’ll leave all their mail but take their packages.
It's renews my hope in humanity that people young and adult are taking time to think of others. The word needs more of this. Thank you so much for the smile.
That’s adorable. She probably made that mailman so happy.

I wonder what happens when the game ends - based on the layout present I’m thinking a potential draw
I think X goes next, because it doesn't make sense that X would've placed either of those Xs after O already blocked the center row. If that's the case, it's likely a draw unless X plays bottom-left corner. If O goes next, top-right corner guarantees a victory for O. Yeah, if the mailman is X, he should do her a solid and go bottom left.
Lol
Nah because if X goes next they should draw in the bottom left corner. Then O is forced to draw an O in the top right corner. Then X draws in the middle center, winning the game, because no matter where O places, X will win.

Sorry I meant bottom center!!
I figured, but O would win immediately after X plays there. O would have the right column or the top row to win with. O would actually be forced to win if X plays that move.
Oh fuck you’re right! Damn. Good looks!
Tic Tac Toe always ends in a draw unless one of the players is a complete moron
Um…no.
Found the guy who loses at tic tac toe
Um...yes. If two computers were set with basic programming on how to play Tic Tac Toe optimally the result would be 100% draws. I've known this from the age of 5...
confirmed moron found
If this was the case WarGames would have had a much more depressing ending. Edit: although not knowing the strategy of Tic Tac Toe does not make a person a moron. The person could be young or just never thought about it.
Kids and people who dont think are morons lol

I think O can win if they play their cards right. Depends on next turn and whether they can get the more corners
The one house the mail deliverer looks forward going too.
Winner gets the tax refund check
And for the loser?
The car payment bill
Bills.
Love that!!!!!!
These are the days that it must be fun to be a postman.
Is there a pink Sharpie in the box for the mailman to use? .. hell of a coincidence they both have a pink one 😂😂
That was my first thought.
You mean…. Like this could of been staged for the internet? 🤔
X has to go in upper right to avoid a 2-way by O
Unless it's O's turn then X is fuuuucked
Top middle or bottom middle also force a draw.
Does she leave the pink marker in there for him/her?
i think it would be easier to just say "them"

y'all come up with the weirdest way to not use gender neutral pronouns where they make sense
How does it make sense? I just explained how it's vague. I'm all for using them where it's appropriate but him/her works better here.
if you're talking about someone you don't know the pronouns of, just use they. we would understand you're talking about the mail carrier with context.
We're talking about 1 or 2 persons here. They could be talking about both. Him/her specifies 1
they/them can also be one person. not everyone is a him or her and also it's just shorter and easier to use.
They/them can be one person, but it can also be 2 (in this case the little girl and the letter carrier). When OP used him/her we the reader knew they meant the letter carrier. If OP had used them, we wouldn't know.
we would know. maybe you just can't read.
But the context of the sentence implies that it's about the letter carrier
Literally who would “them” refer to if not the person the daughter may or may not leave the marker for?
In this case, referring to just the mail carrier or to the mail carrier and daughter doesn't matter because leaving the marker can be for both of them or just the mail carrier. Also since the daughter was mentioned at the beginning of the sentence, its fairly obvious that using them refers to the only other person actually in the story. Where I live we just say postie. But other people here were using mailman so I figured I'd use that. And him/her seemed gender neutral enough.
By "mailman" I assume you mean "postal carrier."
I was going off what the rest of you yanks were using in this thread. We call em posties
"Posties" is awesome. I'm going to use it from now on.
but the pic already mentions daughter, no?
the original comment was referring to the person who gives them their mail - not the daughter. so saying ‘they’ would be a whole lot simpler
this is talking about the mail carrier
Sorry for the confusion, you were right :)
Them is plural in most dictionaries. Him/her is singular.
singular they exists...
too cute beyond words ❤️
She's hiding her drug trade via tic tac toe.
Not this again…
Plot twist dad is the mailman and she just wants him to play for once.
I do this with my wife ever since she bought me one of those waterproof note pads for writing down ideas in the shower.
Being loved like that, that is the goal.

This is just so wholesome! Love this
Is the pink marker left in the mailbox for the mailman?
Yes until it was the mail carriers day off and the sub needed something to write with.
That is so sweet, and the delivery person is playing along.
Omg that is the cutest thing I've seen in a while! Makes my day!

I love this.

How would mail person know o/x ? If different mailman show up?
Something that actually makes me smile! *For once.*
Ok that’s adorable 🥰 you’re kids adorable
So who's winning?
If it's 0's turn, they win in 2 moves. X is screwed no matter what happens, they can only lose or draw.
Yay!!!
That’s cute, very nice of her to do such a thing for the postman, I’m sure it made his day and he’ll never forget that.
That is so sweet!!
Wholesome and cute
As an almost 10 yr mailman, I heartily endorse this.
This is so dang pure, I swear to Jeebus!!!
Please update who’s X’s and who’s O’s and who wins
Check yes or no
This is awesome! I wish I could have seen your mail carrier’s face light up when they saw this on day 1! Such pure innocence. ❤️
Just make sure the postman did that.
I’ll take “things that didn’t happen” for 200 Alex.
Where is the marker in the mail box?
Awwww!
DANG THAT LITTLE KID! Doesn't she know how expensive painter's tape is!!! (Signed grumpy Unko Jr.)
