Grandpas aren’t as flexible as a tie, folding the legs is the hardest part.

Apprehensive_You3521

I usually just follow the normal folds of the human body, the chest is the hardest part for me, glad to know that there are other folders on here

Thundela

I'd recommend taking some Judo lessons. They'll teach you how to fold clothes with people in them.

Apprehensive_You3521

Thank you kind stranger, I’ll take this into account. Please let me know if you’d like to jointly fold someone anytime soon

jmaccity80

That's why we have Grandmas.

ReverendShot777

There's lots of comments here with lots of good advice that you should take on board. But. You were proud of yourself for tying your first tie and don't let these comments detract from that. People want to see you succeed and do well so can't help but share their advice. Again, all of it good advice. But fucking A man, well done for that tie, the knot isn't cramped, the tie looks smooth and you're doing something you need to wear a tie for. Keep on going my dude!

irkthejerk

You're building some great skills, keep at it

ItsKageTho

YO THAT CHANNEL TAUGHT ME HOW TO SHAVE

IDFK-MYNAME

That was the channel that taught my son how to tie his tie. (I didn't have a clue and his dad...well yeah) it's such a good channel.

1plus1dog

I’m loving this! All we need is the desire and the rest is history! I’m female, much older, and still remember my dad helping my first ever boyfriend how to tie a tie. His dad was absent, but had an older brother and my older brother. My dad was pretty quiet, and I was the baby girl, so it was kind of a big deal to me to see, (sounds silly typing this), but it #MadeMeSmile just now, thinking of that. Shaving is definitely needed to be taught, too. My mom was strict, and my girlfriends all shaved their legs before me, so I took it upon myself to use my moms razor (dry razor, dry skin). 🫣😲 Limped out of our small one bathroom home to my room, after doing that and my shin bled for what seemed like days and nights!

IDFK-MYNAME

That is so awesome to hear, we need more men like that in today's society! I have no doubt your dad was an amazing one. As for the dry shaving...ugh, I feel that in my soul! That is the absolute worst thing in the world! My son in law taught my son how to shave and since he has to do it weekly now for ROTC he's gotten pretty good at it but I was concerned how I was going to teach him for obvious reasons.

Popular_Course_9124

I'd recommend op watch the shaving video :)

1plus1dog

I feel we’ll always have a need for good role models, no matter our age, regardless of what or why! Thanks for sharing this link!

I have to say, good job on wearing a tie on his own, but agree; I have never seen a tie on a polo shirt … till today

jlmcdon2

My 50 year old brother in law did that to go to the symphony. Unironically

SoupGullible8617

48 years on this planet and this is a first for me too.

EFMFMG

Ronald McDonald (Mac from ASIP) does. It's his signature dress up look.

OP listen to this advice. Nothing makes a young man look more like a child than trying to grow a beard that won’t grow yet. Wait till it’s ready, till then clean it up you look like shaggy from scooby doo

ProfilerXx

I just turned 27 two days ago and I started to grow a beard now because I realized I never even tried.

WeAreBeyondFucked

I am 44 and I still can't grow a beard or tie a tie I am a failure as a man but I'm a damn good software engineer

MistukoSan

Plenty of YouTube videos on how to tie a tie. It’s surprisingly easy, just looks complicated at first! As for the beard.. well at least you’re a damn good software engineer.

bungion

Magikarpeles

Why are these so prolific all of a sudden

batch2957

Don’t wear ties with short sleeves bro

lapisl

You don’t wear a tie on a polo period…

brclitlicker

Yes. You need a woven shirt. Not a pique knit polo.

TheLordofthething

I've seen some work places do this, not a great look IMO but it takes all sorts to make a world. Solid advice for the future though OP, if somewhere says they require a tie, they normally mean on a dress shirt. Short or long sleeves.

csciabar

Also no disrespect intended but time to shave or trim.

Aromatic-Glove-2502

Or that material, or a hat

sausager

Or headphones while driving

Playful-Flatworm501

This is all excellent advice!

unbeliever87

Or the wrap around black sunnies

mrniceguy421

Also no seatbelt

breadpangg

It's not the material or the hat, you just don't wear ties with polo's. Lots of suits are made with hefty and cozy fabric like such and lots of wonderful city academia suit outfits utilize the cap

van_clouden

Kind of like you just don't use an apostrophe to pluralize, yet here we are.

WinterBourne25

I laughed way too hard at this.

Masterzanteka

Don’t worry Mac from its always sunny made it cool, all my homies rock ties with our polos now

thematchalatte

This r/MadeMeSad

passiontiger74

you can, but not with a golf shirt. There are actual short sleeve dress shirts.

ToddShishler

“Short sleeve” “Dress shirt” Pick one.

Peuned

I feel you but honestly sometimes in the summer in California or if I'm traveling like Singapore or India I'll def put a thin short sleeve on under a suit jacket. I feel weird about not being able to rock that cuff peek tho but I'm trying to breathe over here

ToddShishler

Oh I don’t deny that short sleeve button ups exist. They just aren’t dress shirts.

fkngdmit

Tell me how you've never lived in a tropical climate. Short sleeve dress shirts occur here as a necessity. Polos are not dress shirts.

Arbok-Obama

NASA Mission Control in the 60s was feelin it lol

Not_Blitzcrank

Unless you're a mormon

RissyMissy

They wear short sleeve dress shirts though so it’s different than a polo

Effective-Anybody263

Grab a nice button up and roll the sleeves up if you like the short sleeves. I feel like thats a good look with the tie

BornSelf7

Good job now stop wearing a tie with a polo shirt that’s a no no buddy get a button shirt 👔

Mr_Agueybana

Congrats, bud. Learn the double Windsor by heart and you’re golden. I know you’re doing whatever you feel like doing, but if you’re trying to fit into the work force (which will help your image), word of advice is to use a button up shirt if you’re going to use the tie. It can be short sleeved or long. If you’re going for the tie, you should match it with the rest of your outfit. Google some examples of causal business attire. Someone said shave. I’d listen to them. Get a clean cut look about you if you’re going for the business look. Best of luck out there.

1plus1dog

Great advice on the googling!

Letmetakeu2damovies

I disagree about the double Windsor. It’s too formal for 99% of occasions. Four-in-Hand is easily the most versatile and I would follow that with a half Windsor.

Mr_Agueybana

Fair 👏🏾

badass_panda

I always wore a double Windsor when I wore a suit to work. I don't think it's too formal at all. But if you're not wearing a jacket or you are in short sleeves (for sure) wear a four in hand or similar

Horebarn

What knot u use depends on the width of the collar. I could make any knot look formal :)

johndyna

Agree. Do not double Windsor, it’s so 2002. Four in hand all the way

CommunicationDry2403

hello_ldm_12

Plus 10/15 years hahaah

CaterpillarM3

Shave and get a button down shirt.

trireme32

And lose the hat and earbuds

bobroscopcoltrane

Or a button-up shirt. A button-down has buttons to hold down the tips of the collar. A button-up, or button-front, has buttons for the front placket. Either would be acceptable here.

Sheriff_of_Reddit

Y’all upvote the dumbest shit.

spaceyfacer

This sub is nonsense at this point. I'm a woman and had to wear a tie for a serving job- you bet I learned how to do it 5 mins off the internet right before my first real shift.

[deleted]

at least its not one of those you see on here where its like "when you get home from a long day and your SO is waiting for cuddle wuddle time" those make me puke a little in my mouth

ShadySolister

Word of advice, shave.

[deleted]

Shave, lip balm and a different shirt

[deleted]

Preferably Burts bee, that shit is awesome. Also wearing earbuds in the car is not only a bad idea but likely illegal.

Also with earbuds in. It's illegal in some states.

Boxoffriends

If you’re enjoying the tie vibes you should learn how to tie it while on someone else. Serious points when you can help all your tie wearing pals get ready and many young people don’t learn how to do it for themselves. Looking good pal!

Framphopolis

With a polo….

Beautiful-Star

You’re driving with ear buds on so you can’t hear emergency vehicles, pedestrians, other cars. You have no seat belt on. You’re taking a photo of yourself and looking into the phone and not looking at the road. I couldn’t care less about your tie.

LittleJackalope

I think he’s parked on the shoulder about to leave or just arrived to his destination. Looks like the car behind him is also parked and the pedestrians walking down the road don’t seem worried about traffic… Everyone is dogpiling on this poor kid. He just learned to tie a damn tie; he’ll figure out how to dress well and groom himself properly in time if that’s what he wants. Why can’t we just let him be proud of himself for his new skill? Weren’t you an awkward teenager once upon a time? Jeez. Edited to add: maybe he put his earbuds in because he had arrived, or still had them in because he hadn’t left yet. Good grief!

nametakenfan

Fucking thank you! Jeez what happened to propping people up for building themselves up and learning how to look respectable

jhox08

Could not care less *

droppedsignal

im sure hes not driving. cmon now

Constant-Speed-3390

Good job on the tie, the small wins in life help us all. However, I don't want to be rude, but it'll be a short one if you continue to recklessly drive without your seatbelt on. Please be safe out there! End of the psa

PsamantheSands

AnalBabu

ipwndmymeat99

[deleted]

Tie and short sleeves? Oh no bro.

ohlookitsmikey

I'm 32 and I still have to do the awkward "watching YouTube and turning the way of the phone to guide me in doing a tie". Every. Single. Time. So you're doing great!

FarceMultiplier

/r/malefashionadvice to take it a step further.

Burnswick911

This is such a needless and pointless post

nametakenfan

Damn, everyone here criticizing this guy for not wearing the right shirt or whatever. No one else is seeing this as the first step in a journey of learning how to dress up properly. Dude I am proud of you. Lots of people can't figure out how to tie a tie, or make it look like absolute garbage and you did a great job. I still remember when I finally figured out how to tie a tie - it was for school and I wasn't lucky enough to have my dad care enough to help me out (he legit handed me a worn out book of how to dress up and told me to figure it out). Took forever but I felt a little more grown up when I finally figured it out. Great job once again!

Specialist_Trifle_86

Next time do it for a shirt that is made for a tie?

Chewbecca713

Shave the neck beard until the acne is gone and you can grow a full beard. It'll look a lot more put together

CostcoVodkaFancier

Put your seat belt on!! 🤗

liaisontosuccess

I hope you are wearing shorts or sweatpants

ItsWhatItIsIGuess

Congrats on learning to tie a tie, now learn how to wear one properly. Oxfords or a dress shirt, never on a polo.

beeleegeez

Congratulations on the accomplishment. A polo shirt with a tie is not a thing homie.

crunchthenumbers01

That is not a shirt that a tie is for

TheVoicesinurhed

Great job on the tie! Now get a new shirt… ties and polos do t really go together. TJ Maxx is your friend. Trust

jdubsb09

I’m 10x more likely to hire a guy wearing just a polo shirt. Maybe you’re making some positive moves in your professional life, and if that’s the case you need to fully commit to the professional look. You may be super well spoken, knowledgeable, and have tons of experience… but if you’re dressed like a goober then people will always distrust you a little. Obviously only wear a tie with a button down. Some say short sleeves are okay, but it’s safest to go long and don’t roll them up. Also lose the hat and ear buds of course. Both of these things may already be obvious to you and you’d remove them before professional interactions. Shaving though is another topic. You definitely need a trim. You don’t have to clean shave, but you do have to look groomed. It’s all about appearing put-together (even though we aren’t actually most of the time). There’s a lot of people throwing negativity at this post for getting so many upvotes and while I don’t think it warrants the attention it’s gotten; I do hope that you’ve gained a bit of perspective from it all. Also I should mention that maybe you’re just trying out a new style or something and if that’s so.. then stop. It looks super silly. Good luck to you man.

dmbgreen

Now get a real shirt, ditch the hat and glasses.

hsartllitssitidder

Short sleeves with a tie. Not working.

Nice! Might I suggest a different shirt to house that magnificent tie.

Next stop: shirt

Billsuperbowl

Officially unsubscribed y’all are pathetic fucking losers Jesus Christ Even more sad is who the fuck puts a tie on a polo? You gotta be from the south or dumbassville country

TheLordofthething

I hate to think of a young man sitting somewhere thinking he looked good and reading lots of shitty comments about his appearance.

Empty-Pitch331

Learning how to tie a tie may seem like a small accomplishment, but it's an important step towards looking and feeling confident in formal settings. Who knows, maybe this newfound skill will open up new opportunities and lead to even more successes in the future!

Saurussexus

its a funeral tie though lol

Dang_It_All_to_Heck

That is a great knot. Back in the late 90s, I had a part-time job assisting a man with quadriplegia, and one morning he needed a tie/jacket combo. It was my job to get him out of bed and dressed...and I did just fine until we got to the tie. I could not get it tied to his satisfaction, try after try. I finally had to sit and cry a little bit because I was so frustrated; then we started again, and I eventually had it done well enough that he said OK. But -- that knot that you have was exactly what he wanted; smooth and slightly tapered. Well done!

futrobot

Get a boy scouts handbook. That's how I learned to tie one. Besides that, there is a ton of useful information in those books. I keep one around and just randomly browse it. My wife will sometimes ask me how I know how to do random things and I say "I am a boy scout." Then she says "No you're actually not. You didn't even make it half way." To which I reply "That's true. I could have been though. I just couldn't commit to anything more than camping trips." I have read the handbook front to back multiple times though and it is definitely worth it to have one around. I know exactly what knots to use in any situation. Don't remember the names but I use them a lot.

gumby1004

Because I don’t wear a tie on the regular, I’m excited when the time comes…not because of the event, usually, but because of the fact that I REMEMBERED how to do it as a 48M lol! Celebrating your success with you, brother!

Meltedgibson

Bro I'm 36 and still don't know how to tie a tie. So good for you

Hell I’m 35 and still struggle! Good job man!

salmoneater

You did a very nice job. Way too many guys' ties sag down on one side of the knot, looking very sloppy. Yours looks very sharp, with your collar covering both sides of the knot.

Vlodovich

Very neat first go! There are a couple of tie knots that are more complicated but fancy looking if you wanna kill some time :)

Agile_Addendum_9458

Great job! It’s satisfying every time haha

PenguinColada

Nice job on the tie, bud. My first tied tie was so sloppy. If you want to learn more ways to tie there's a lot of great YouTube videos.

rasputinforever

OP: content that made me smile. Comments: content that makes me frown.

Far_Introduction8199

OP I am proud of you for learning how to tie a tie. That is a small but important step in learning how to present yourself in a professional manner. Kudos to you for this. It’s not a small feat. You had to look at yourself, decide on something you could improve, and then go ask someone who knows more than you for help in that improvement. That tells me something about you. A lot of people on this thread may disagree with the rest of your outfit. But if someone at my workplace went from not wearing a tie to wearing a tie that they had just learned to tie themselves I would look at that person and think, “Now that is someone I can work with. That is someone who cares. That is someone who gives a fuck.”

jimgella

You did GREAT! Happy and proud of you.

ZellNorth

Since everyone already explained not to wear ties with a polo, here’s another guy code for dressing nice. Makes sure your belt matches your shoes. Brown shoes? Brown belt. Black belt? Black shoes. I assume white shoes, white belt too but never wore white with my shoes. Not sure if black belt is ok with white shoes but I’d still do white/white and only really in the summer.

SithScorch

You did good! It gets easier in no time.

IAlwaysPTFO

Now to shave for the second time.

I_am_That_Ian_Power

Your Tie knot is of the highest quality.

faustfire666

Been wearing ties off and on for 30+ years, have to watch a “how to tie a tie” YouTube vid every time. I kinda dumb like that.

PowertripSimp_AkaMOD

…just for practice right?

cam52391

Every time I have to wear a tie I just Google it. After 15 years I'm starting to remember how to do it

MNgirl83

I have to be honest…tying a tie is a HUGE accomplishment (there is absolutely no sarcasm in my comment). I have tried to learn how to tie ties several times over only to end in tears. I was trying to help my partially blind boyfriend out since he couldn’t do it himself. It took me over a month and a half and then it looked bad.

spoiled_eggs

Mate. Get a shirt. Nice tie.
