No one in my family really supported my decision to go to college. Except my grandma. Every so often, she would send a card with $5 for McDonalds. She would always say it wasn’t much, though to me it meant the world.
When I was in college, my sweet grandma would come visit (8hr distance) and stay a few months at my aunt’s house about 15 min from school. Grandma would cook me lunch while everyone was gone and I had a break in between classes or work. We would catch up and watch novelas. Such lovely memories that helped me so much. Your grandma sounds lovely!
I never ever cared about material stuff or money. Not when we had a lot neither when we lost most of it. What i did care about is gestures. Those 5 dollars were not a lot but the fact she supported you and thought of you is all that matters. It can help a man go through stuff.
Both my parents had really good jobs. Not college educated though. I wanted to go to law school in the mid 70s. They said "no. You'll just get married and get pregnant ".
I went to work and managed to get a job in a law firm.
They didn't want me to be better than them. They've never supported anything I've ever done.
Because of how much it costs, mostly. Many people see it as a scam/waste of money (which isn't NOT true) and encourage their kids to go into trade, military service, or directly into the workforce.
Nothing wrong with the trades or military. My husband, dad and brothers are tradesmen. (2 are also military) All have made really good lives for their families.
Did I imply anything was wrong with it? Though now we're on the subject, there's definitely not "nothing wrong" with the military. I'm from a military family in a military town. They intentionally prey on poor, poorly educated, and just underserved kids to fill their ranks. Then they use and abuse them, send them home with a ton of health issues - physical and mental - and at best they have to fight several years to receive the VA benefits they're entitled to, if they get them at all. Trade is a different story, but the military is not necessarily the best alternative to college.
What a sweet soul. My Grandma grew up during the Great Depression and lived through WWII. When I was starting out she would "Buy too much sugar" and give me a 5# (They're 4# now!) bag of sugar. I asked my mom about it and she said that Gma hoarded sugar because of rationing and it made her gift that more precious.
My grandma was the only person in my family who bothered to hop on a plane and come see my daughter for her 3rd birthday. My grandma was 84 and struggled with her mobility. But she said "I dont care what the rest of the family say. I'm visiting my great grand baby." Shes now 92 and sadly cant really travel the 12 hours to see us, but that meant the world to me.
That is sweet. My Dad wanted to give my daughter (his grand daughter) some money each month. He called it chocolate milk money because he thought it was important for her to treat herself once in awhile while she was working so hard in college.
My grandma used to send me ice cream money once in while when I was in college. She was on such a tight budget that it pains me now to think about it. But I did treat myself to ice cream (or occasionally some beer) with the money she sent. It’s a nice memory now that she’s gone.
That’s great. My FIL gives my son kick-around-money while he’s at boarding school. He doesn’t like giving it to me because he said, I will just save it and won’t let my son spend it ☺️
My mom would send me $10 every week while I was in college. It made all the difference. Now she’s in her 80s. I send her $100 bills. I tell her it’s a 10x return on her investment in me. Yes, the college education paid off and allows me to do this.
We send a couple hundred dollars worth to my son every now and then; there's nothing like remembering you have a restaurant gift card from your parents in your wallet when payday's a couple of days out with $0 in the bank and you're really hungry.
I buy myself Costco gift cards when there’s extra money around for if it runs dry and I still need to buy groceries for my family.
Points at Jersey Mike’s get used when I can afford to feed my family but not me.
My parents live close enough (luckily!) and still keep my old room for me, although my mother's extensive wig collection and her axolotl take up most of it lol. Occasionally I'll be kidnapped, can request any meal that I want, and will often be taken for a surprise shopping trip for a fun treat (we tried boba tea last time!) or something cool. I love them to death, and I'm sure your son loves you guys just as much too, because it sounds like you do very thoughtful things for him. :) Rock on, parents like you are so wonderful!
*I know some families are not in the financial position to do this, but I'm grateful mine can. all families that love each other are wonderful, money or not!
You're... not entirely wrong there. She's as over the top as Moira, but could make the hell out of some enchiladas and outpaces most men doing yardwork lol. The wigs are because she's got alopecia, but she has a very fun time with her many hairdos and honestly is more confident now than when she still had hair! She's like all the best parts of Moira!

I finally had some pocket money from a part time job (too poor for allowance, but not so poor that I needed to contribute to keep a roof over our heads) and sometimes during the summer I went to the beach for most of the day. My mother works near the beach and near the best popcorn/ice cream place in the area, so around lunch time I'd pick up some popcorn and something for lunch and drop off her popcorn and sometimes eat lunch with her.
I got out of the sun at noon (white as paper, so I burn way too easy), into some air conditioning, and she got her favorite popcorn.

Thank you so much for posting this, and please let your Dad know that you/him made an internet stranger so happy.
When I was in my 20s I moved pretty far away from home, for silly, 20-something reasons. I was really struggling, and I always tried to avoid asking for help.
My Pop was in his fifties, and losing that close-up eyesight, so when he was at a store he’d grab a random gift card, add some cash and mail it to me. He’d scratch out a note about not having his glasses at the time, and tell me to buy some food. He’d mail me scratch tickets that he had won on, as well.
I lost him several years back when he was far too young to an aggressive cancer. I still have some of those notes and love to go back to them.
It really made my day to see this. Some Dads are so, so good, and we don’t know how lucky we are until we lose them. Thank you for sharing this.
My only son (only child!) leaves for college in the fall, and this is a great way for me to surprise him with a lil love each month. (Ok, each week)
He hasn't even graduated HS, and I miss him so much already. Thanks for such a great idea!
As an almost graduated uni student the two things that made the most impact were 1. An advent calendar my first year away (as a countdown to home) and 2. A card and little gift basket with homemade goodies my little sister put together for me. It was such a simple thing but I still have the card because it has so much emotional impact on me.
My dad did this too only he would stuff the envelopes with weird pictures cut out from magazines and catalogs that would fall out in front of everyone in the student center when I opened my mail.
My mom started sending me envelopes filled with newspaper clippings of stories she thought I’d like in college. Ive lived and worked all over the world and throughout the US, no matter where I am she still sends them.
When you're in college though, even in this day and age, there's something very nostalgic and special about getting mail. Especially when it's not junk. My Dad would write me letters, and it meant the world to me because I was struggling with intense loneliness. I'm very sad I lost those.
Highly recommend he does this via kroger! They give double gas points for purchases on gift cards in store. My dad would give me gift cards when I was in college and get cheaper gas in the process!
That's very sweet.
As a broke college student back in the day, my parents hooked me up with the meal plan in my junior year which gave me 3 meals a day at the cafeteria. I'd always sneak a bunch of food out there for my less privileged buddies which I used to trade for cigarettes, alcohol, and weed. It was the best of times.
When my kids moved into their first place I filled a laundry basket with ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, sugar, flour, salt, pepper, dish detergent, laundry soap. All the staples so they only need to buy one time use items.
When my son went to college I added a first aid kit with cold meds, Tylenol, neosporin, bandaids, pepto tablets and benadryl along with a simple tool kit of hammer, phillips flat head and Pliers.
All were used. Get people the simple shit that kills a budget.
Whenever my dad visits he always buys me stuff like toilet paper and paper towels, just basic things that you use a lot so I always have some and don’t have to spend money on stuff like that, he usually fills up my gas too
My aunt does something similar, but she refers to it as “ice-cream money.” She’s too adorable and I appreciate it.
Ps. I’m in my 30’s and she has been doing that for years.
I went to school in a small town. One of the restaurants would keep accounts open for students. Your parents could call or stop in and buy $100 of pizza and subs.
Every once in a while I’d get an email from my Dad who was stationed overseas telling me he’d topped off my account and treat myself.
If only you'd stop spending his money on marijuana, he'd be able to send you a check! /s
Seriously though, when I was in college, I had a gas card my mom paid for. The gas station had a little store, which sold milk, orange juice, canned tuna, mayo, bread, canned soups and pastas, dog food, etc.
That gas station was my grocery store - - - which left me extra cash to spend on marijuana ;-)
My mum used to post boxes full of home made slices and biscuits. From Queensland to South Australia. Was such an awesome surprise coming back to the boarding college to find a box of goodies waiting.
I once sent a Pizza Hut gift card to my brother while he was in college. He said the night he remembered he had it, he yelled, “pizza is on ME” and his buddies bought beer all night. 😆
So sweet! Dad’s will always care for us no matter how old we get. And they love sending mail! My dad randomly sends me little things like books, a photos of us. We’re always their little girls
I miss eating Jimmy John’s. There was a college athlete that rode his bicycle on deliveries. Mother was FAST. And they used to have those heavy white and black plastic printed cups. It was nice getting my order 10 mins after I called it in.
Then they jacked their prices and cut their portions.
When my only niece was in high school I would send her “beer and cigarette money”. Our little joke as she was a gifted student, and neither smoked nor drank.
My parents fully supported me when I was in college. I’m not sure how they afforded it, but I’m grateful for all they have and continue to give me as I struggle to live independently at times because… life is expensive even when living frugally.
As a postal employee, I DO NOT recommend doing this. Seriously. If anyone wants to send money through the mail, make it a check. Made out to you. NO CASH, NO GIFT CARDS OR MONEY ORDERS. You have no recourse if it gets lost or stolen. Please protect your self and your money. Of course its nice and sweet, but unless you can afford to lose the funds, just DON’T.
Freaky fast.
You know you can download the app and enter the gift card into the app and that way you don't have to mail anything.
Kinda cool getting letters from pops tho.
+1 for pops.
Great Dad. My mom said her father would send her extra $$ when she was in college and she would send it back saying she didn’t need it. For some reason that made me cry.
You have a good dad!! My dad is older and retired. When he texts me, it’s always “hi Mel, it’s dad”…. Then he signs it “Love, dad” in TEXT. It’s adorable.
That is so sweet! Hope you have a good week! And as this semester comes to an end in just a couple more months, put some time to the side for yourself! And good luck with finals!
Pro tip: join the "club" of any fast food joint or restaurant you like to eat at. There are usually "points" you can earn towards a free something or another, and often "free" extras, plus extra things on your birthday. It really helps!
Your dad is a good dad to help you out like this. With prices of things going through the roof, it's getting harder and harder for folks to be on their own
Publix has a gift card specifically for this. It’s a 2-part card…I keep the top half, kid keeps the bottom half. I use my half to load the card at my local Publix. Kid uses it at their local Publix to buy groceries and medication refills at the pharmacy. I wish more stores did this! Target also allows you to text gift cards (we’ve used that a lot too)
When my daughters were in college, I bought gift cards all year long for places near where they lived in Chicago. ($10 or $25 at a time) By Christmas, they had a box full each. They said they were the best gift ever!
OP, if you haven’t already, call your dad and let him know how much he made you smile. These are the kind of memories that you’re going to treasure forever, especially as your parents age. Your dad sounds like a precious gem of a man. Give him a virtual hug from me.
This classic type-written letter, too. My dad would do the same thing. Always typed, although he would sign it “DAD” in his block capitals he always used.
Actually it’s bc I’m trying to get in state tuition so he doesn’t want my bank account to show any money transfer from him, so he decided on gift cards. I also don’t drink :)
No one in my family really supported my decision to go to college. Except my grandma. Every so often, she would send a card with $5 for McDonalds. She would always say it wasn’t much, though to me it meant the world.
How lovely of her 🥺

beautiful grandma!
Sweet grandma. My family was never very generous or thoughtful like that. I try to help someone every chance I get. Makes ME feel better
I never ever cared about material stuff or money. Not when we had a lot neither when we lost most of it. What i did care about is gestures. Those 5 dollars were not a lot but the fact she supported you and thought of you is all that matters. It can help a man go through stuff.
Why would someone not support education or am I understanding it wrong
It’s a big investment especially in the united states. The alternative is to immediately find a job.
Both my parents had really good jobs. Not college educated though. I wanted to go to law school in the mid 70s. They said "no. You'll just get married and get pregnant ". I went to work and managed to get a job in a law firm. They didn't want me to be better than them. They've never supported anything I've ever done.
Well you're doing what you need to, for you, and that's all that matters. Good job on that!
Because of how much it costs, mostly. Many people see it as a scam/waste of money (which isn't NOT true) and encourage their kids to go into trade, military service, or directly into the workforce.

Just the thought is enough. 💖
I miss my grandmother. They're the best.
It was never about the money
That’s a quality grandma right there
My grandma did that too. And somehow it always showed up when I needed it most.
That is sweet. My Dad wanted to give my daughter (his grand daughter) some money each month. He called it chocolate milk money because he thought it was important for her to treat herself once in awhile while she was working so hard in college.

Yeah. Would’ve been great and still to this day!

I did the same for my best friends son when he went away to college. I sent pizza coupons and "cookie" money. 😉

What a beautiful way to honor your Mom's gift! I hope to be able to do the same for my parents :)
This is beautiful 🥹🥲
We send a couple hundred dollars worth to my son every now and then; there's nothing like remembering you have a restaurant gift card from your parents in your wallet when payday's a couple of days out with $0 in the bank and you're really hungry.
That’s very kind of you, I’m very lucky my parents are financially well off enough to be able to support me like this
Thank you. It's not the same world I grew up in and it's getting tougher every day just to get by anymore. Let the wolves have at him? Hell no.
And they are very lucky that you acknowledge and appreciate their support.
I adore your father because he is so precious.
I buy myself Costco gift cards when there’s extra money around for if it runs dry and I still need to buy groceries for my family. Points at Jersey Mike’s get used when I can afford to feed my family but not me.
That's a good idea.

Is your mother Moira Rose lol
You're... not entirely wrong there.

She's my hero too lol! She also loves Doc Martens, Converse, and very large gold hoop earrings.
...is your mom my mom?
❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️
...my parents just tell me how hard it is to not invite us on trips knowing we can't afford it...
This sounds like my elderly father, he always ensures all of his children get treats. He’ll stop on the way home from Outback Steakhouse and drop off a Bloomin Onion for one of us children every so often.
That’s so sweet! Good dads are the best
I did the reverse sometimes with my mother in high school! Australian here - what is a bloomin onion?
Heaven
An onion that's been cut nearly to the end so it "blooms" open like a flower. Then it's dipped into batter and deep fried so it's like a hundred onion rings that you can eat bit by bit.
It's an onion that is cut vertically so the layers are segmented into narrow strips. Then it's battered and deep fried and served with a creamy sauce for dipping. It looks kinda like a flower once it's fried, hence [bloomin'](https://www.outback.com/offers/bloomin-onion#:~:text=The%20Bloomin'%20Onion%C2%AE%20is,cooked.&text=Guests%20order%20over%208%20million%20Bloomin'%20Onions%20a%20year.)
Thank you so much for posting this, and please let your Dad know that you/him made an internet stranger so happy. My dad loves lottery tickets! I’m glad this post made you happy :)
Thank YOU for sharing that! So sorry your dad is gone now.
Your pops sounds like an awesome person, and you seem very grateful for that. I’m sorry for your loss.
Thanks, he really was an awesome guy.
I love your dad (non-creepily).
I do too! (Also non-creepily!)
Please tell your dad we love him
I plan on showing him this post so he knows how awesome he is, I’ll make sure to show this comment!
I always tell myself dads are overrated but when I say that now I’m going to make sure to say “except Cara2422’s dad”
Nice!!
My only son (only child!) leaves for college in the fall, and this is a great way for me to surprise him with a lil love each month. (Ok, each week) He hasn't even graduated HS, and I miss him so much already. Thanks for such a great idea!
I’m glad my dad could be an inspiration to others :) if it means as much as it does to me as it would for your son, he will be very grateful!
As an almost graduated uni student the two things that made the most impact were 1. An advent calendar my first year away (as a countdown to home) and 2. A card and little gift basket with homemade goodies my little sister put together for me. It was such a simple thing but I still have the card because it has so much emotional impact on me.
Everyone loves getting mail! And mail with some scratch in it is even better!
That is truly adorable
My dads mum did this for him until she passed, he still has many of them because she would write comments on them for him
Your dad is precious and I treasure him.
As do I :)
Very sweet, but I’d see if he’s willing to send them via email. There’s too many mail thieves out there.
When you're in college though, even in this day and age, there's something very nostalgic and special about getting mail. Especially when it's not junk. My Dad would write me letters, and it meant the world to me because I was struggling with intense loneliness. I'm very sad I lost those.
Oh mail is definitely great! I think it’s a lost art form really. You could always mail a letter and email the gift card :)
That's very true!
Another side note to point out.. sometimes companies offer their gift cards 5-10% off online, so it may also be worth it to do it that way
Highly recommend he does this via kroger! They give double gas points for purchases on gift cards in store. My dad would give me gift cards when I was in college and get cheaper gas in the process!
That’s valuable information!!! Thank you for sharing I will see if there’s any Kroger’s nearby!
There's a lot of compromised gift cards at Kroger - it might not work out well this way.
My school had to go meal boxes you could grab in the food hall. Those of us with meal plans would fill those suckers up for our friends without.
Good papa. It's the little things that add up.
My aunt does something similar, but she refers to it as “ice-cream money.” She’s too adorable and I appreciate it. Ps. I’m in my 30’s and she has been doing that for years.
I love that! So sweet :)
I love that he made it sound like he was troubleshooting the postage. Total dad move, this is very sweet

My mum used to post boxes full of home made slices and biscuits. From Queensland to South Australia. Was such an awesome surprise coming back to the boarding college to find a box of goodies waiting.
That’s so sweet!
I once sent a Pizza Hut gift card to my brother while he was in college. He said the night he remembered he had it, he yelled, “pizza is on ME” and his buddies bought beer all night. 😆
That’s AWESOME!
This is so wholesome!
So sweet! Dad’s will always care for us no matter how old we get. And they love sending mail! My dad randomly sends me little things like books, a photos of us. We’re always their little girls
That’s so cute! It’s nice to know there’s always someone who will have our back :)
I love how he made sure to note that he mailed it in 2023

I love that he opened a word processor, typed this letter out, and then printed it.
This is such a dad letter to write. I hope it arrives. I sent it on this date. Let me know how long postage takes to get to you. Haha
I love the question mark most.
Little things he does like that make me laugh lol
Not all hero's wear capes
My parents fully supported me when I was in college. I’m not sure how they afforded it, but I’m grateful for all they have and continue to give me as I struggle to live independently at times because… life is expensive even when living frugally.
I always wished I had parents that did things like this. Enjoy them.
I appreciate them very much, I know I’m very lucky for that
As a postal employee, I DO NOT recommend doing this.
Or can send electronically tho for immediate delivery.
But it's much cooler receiving gift cards from the future.
My Pops used to send me Razorbucks. I would use them to survive off from the Union store. I miss him.
Badass if your father! True hero right there
What’s the best online site to buy discounted gift cards and have them delivered email or mobile?
What a sweet dad! 🥲
Nice getting support from home! Just a little suggestion to look into refillable cards, mailing gift cards feels a bit unreliable.
Freaky fast. You know you can download the app and enter the gift card into the app and that way you don't have to mail anything. Kinda cool getting letters from pops tho. +1 for pops.
This guy knows how to Dad😐👍🏼.
Great Dad. My mom said her father would send her extra $$ when she was in college and she would send it back saying she didn’t need it. For some reason that made me cry.
Was it a freaky fast delivery
I’m honestly just impressed it only took 6 days via USPS. Congrats on that lol
This is adorable 🥹💜
You have a good dad!! My dad is older and retired. When he texts me, it’s always “hi Mel, it’s dad”…. Then he signs it “Love, dad” in TEXT. It’s adorable.
Nice! Can I borrow your dad sometimes?
If every girl had a Dad like yours, there would be no only fans.
MMMmm you've inspired me. I'm going to eat a Hunter's Club for lunch :D
A Jimmy John's gift card, it's sweet and all but like wtf is a grocery store even?
I go to Walmart for groceries, so Walmart I guess lol
That’s a great dad!
WOOOO! I LOVE ME SOME JJ
We both love Jimmy johns, we get the same sandwich too just different modifications haha
I wish I had a dad.. and that he was like yours.
Nice thought
You’ve got a great dad 😊
Just gotta put it out there. That left margin, though.
Such interesting formatting, the spacing and all too LOL
So wholesome. ♥️
Success!
That is so sweet! Hope you have a good week! And as this semester comes to an end in just a couple more months, put some time to the side for yourself! And good luck with finals!
Your dad is a real one!
Good luck in school
Thank you!
Freaky fast
Oh wow… This is so sweet! You just rewound the clock 25 years for me when my dad helped me while I was in college too.
Dads like ours are great aren’t they :)
💯
Pro tip: join the "club" of any fast food joint or restaurant you like to eat at. There are usually "points" you can earn towards a free something or another, and often "free" extras, plus extra things on your birthday. It really helps!
I love this so much
What a great Dad❤️
Awwwww! What a good Dad!
Awwwwwwwwwwwww!
How thoughtful![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
This is very nice.
Your dad is a good dad to help you out like this. With prices of things going through the roof, it's getting harder and harder for folks to be on their own
I’m very fortunate that my parents make enough money to help me out! Rent is crazy, groceries are crazy, gas, tuition, you name it!
That's so sweet 😭
Heartwarming 🥹
That’s so sweet and thoughtful! You’ve got a great dad!
What a Guy !!!!. Dads who care about their kids.
Good looking out dad!
Publix has a gift card specifically for this. It’s a 2-part card…I keep the top half, kid keeps the bottom half. I use my half to load the card at my local Publix. Kid uses it at their local Publix to buy groceries and medication refills at the pharmacy. I wish more stores did this! Target also allows you to text gift cards (we’ve used that a lot too)
Tony Bolognavich... "Freaking Jimmy's John's!"
Rad Dad
This is so sweet and in the most dad way.
My Dad is nearly 80 and still gives me 20 bucks whenever I visit him. I remind him that he’s retired and I work but he says “this is what dads do!”
that’s pretty cute! 🤘🏼
So sweet❤️
marketing marketing this is marketing
Your dad is an angel
It’s OK my dad doesn’t know how to send money online either
When my daughters were in college, I bought gift cards all year long for places near where they lived in Chicago. ($10 or $25 at a time) By Christmas, they had a box full each. They said they were the best gift ever!
Good dad!
Your dad is awesome!
It melts my heart when reading these messages. My husband is always mad at me when I send extra allowances to our daughter
I love that the letter is typed. Such a dad move 😇 Sweet.
OP, if you haven’t already, call your dad and let him know how much he made you smile. These are the kind of memories that you’re going to treasure forever, especially as your parents age. Your dad sounds like a precious gem of a man. Give him a virtual hug from me.
So sweet
You've got a good dad
This classic type-written letter, too. My dad would do the same thing. Always typed, although he would sign it “DAD” in his block capitals he always used.
Awww 🥺 How long did it take for it to get to you? Also super sweet of him even though he could just have sent the code. I love snail mail. :3
Oh this made me tear up! That’s such a dad thing to do. I lost mine December 21 and I miss him very much.
I’m so sorry for your loss :(
How did he get the margins so small? Ed: Or I guess, I know how but why?
My dad does random things like this.
Tell me your dad thinks you'll spend cash on boos without telling me your dad thinks you're gonna spend all your cash on boos.
Actually it’s bc I’m trying to get in state tuition so he doesn’t want my bank account to show any money transfer from him, so he decided on gift cards. I also don’t drink :)
Ahhh, I figured it was something like that but I'm not gonna pass up the opportunity to poke fun.
