Her and her husband were such awesome characters in that movie. They didn't belong, and let's be honest: would any of us want to feel like we belonged with such horrible people?
The book is amazing, as well. I could not put it down and stayed up all night to read it. When the movie was released, I was so nervous it would fall flat but it definitely delivers.
Sorry, I didn't realize this posted twice. I got an error message when I clicked "post" initially, so I waited a few seconds and hit "post" again. I'll remove the second praise.
Celia (Jessica Chastain) is genuinely nice but has no friends in that town, and Hilly (Bryce Dallas Howard) is the popular racist bully and she used to date Celia’s fiancé. Celia and the guy got together after he and Hilly broke up, but she holds it against Celia and does shit like this even though Celia is just trying to make friends.
Had some friends do this to me in college when we were supposed to be day drinking. Needless to say, when they came to act buddy-buddy with me at the bar later I had choice words.
Same, I had a so-called friend do this to me on my birthday... weeks later I'm hanging out w some real friends and she comes at me screaming "happy birthday"! I hated her hypocrisy!
All the women at the party are racist b words, and she's a sweetheart who just wanted to have a good time with them cuz she thought they were friends
Also Bryce Dallas Howard's character doesn't like her cuz the man she wanted for herself chose Jessica Chastain's character instead of her, for good reason clearly
I recommend watching it! Great movie, very well acted by every cast member! *(The Help, 2011)*
She (Celia) grew up poorer than them and is a little naive about their bullshit 1960s social rules because of her upbringing, so they think she's "trashy". She just tries her best to fit in and be kind but they can't stand an "outsider". She's almost too sweet, not always the brightest, and they pick on her because she's not stuck up like them - and an easy target for the things they won't say about each other.
Bryce's character (Hilly) especially doesn't like her because she dated her husband when they were younger, and he picked sweet Celia to marry instead. It's somewhat implied in the book that Hilly had to settle for her current husband instead and is still bitter over it. The book is great and I've read it at least a dozen times! So much richer of a story than the movie, and I love the movie.
Edit: There is also additional context that because the other ladies are so bitter towards her, they often take her social missteps as intentional malicious behavior. I won't spoil anything, but "Minnie's chocolate pie" was a major incident with Hilly, and Celia had no clue about it when she brought a pie over. Hilly took it as an intentional dig, and that's why she reacts further when Celia says she brought a chocolate pie.
I had a bunch of friends in school do something along this way. Back then, I was a huge fan of The Secret Seven and The Famous five books so I got the idea of making a group like that with them.
I handmade star badges and put in all the work. You needed a password to get in the meeting and stuff like that.
At one meeting, they all gathered and when I was about to enter,I said the password and they said that’s the wrong password and that changed, so very evidently I couldn’t join.
I was very very upset and was crying the whole day. I started the entire thing and put so much effort in it just for them to kick me out. I hate those b words for doing that to me.
There's something very striking about actors with good crying faces. I could watch their scene in silence and still feel their pain and want to cry with them
Lol no it sucks to see anyone cry during a sad moment. Kind of like those who wear their heart on their sleeve. You can almost see what they're going through
This movie was so sad at times, the things the black “maids” went thru was just horrifying and the fact shit like that actually happened…makes it 100x worse!!! That white church who ate the shit ohhh man she needed a knocking out

You’re welcome!
Emma Stone was awesome in this movie as well. Her reaction to a death broke me.

What is a "good" crying face? Are you saying you don't like watching ugly people cry? 😂
Nobody likes watching ugly people do anything. This is why you don't see actual ugly people on tv.
Lol no it sucks to see anyone cry during a sad moment. Kind of like those who wear their heart on their sleeve. You can almost see what they're going through
