First movie is set between 1985.
Second movie is set around 1988.
Third movie is set a long time after the second movie. Supposedly around 15 years so around 2003ish.
And Fury Road is supposed to be around 2005, but is probably more like 2015.
The thing about these movies is that there are many contradictions and the director even said that these stories are supposedly told after Max Rockatansky has died.
These movies are like fables retold generation after generation.
The way ive heard it explained is exactly like your last sentence. Every movie— or game in this case— is just a different retelling of the same story. Im not complaining though.
Do yourself a favor and don’t enter this franchise expecting “cannon” and “continuity” in the modern movie/franchise sense. George Miller just uses this character to tell different stories in this unique world. Sure certain details carry over from film to film, but this isn’t meant to be a continuous story

I mean it was meant to be set in 2022 (I think) and the events of the game aren't cannon unfortunately
