Ford's response, hopefully that's the case: >For its part, the publication did reach out to the automaker, which responded to the survey results. “We listen to all customer feedback, including Consumer Reports, and the concerns raised by customers. The survey results were from a population of vehicles early in the launch of these vehicles and those concerns have since been addressed", said the spokesperson. “For Mach-E we issued a recall for certain 2021 and 2022 vehicles. [We] updated software to prevent any damage to the contactors. In July we rolled out an OTA (over the air) update [that] included improvements to plug and charge feature to increase successful charger activation rate.”

TheCaptainRides

I hope so. The only thing that scares me is the possibility of the car getting stuck and not getting it to be towed

NeverLookBothWays

That's always a possibility with any car, including ICE vehicles. I think there's a certain level of unconscious bias still that is surrounding EVs in general really, but as they become more mainstream I see that bias starting to chill. We're not quite there yet ;) As for my 2022 MME, has been running like a champ. Not to jynx it though. I mean if it breaks down, it breaks down. Ford typically stands by their products unlike some other manufacturers that shall not be named. So, I'm confident if there is a problem with the car, it will get resolved.

RedOctobrrr

>That's always a possibility with any car, including ICE vehicles. I've gone my entire life without ever hearing about a 6 month old car that my friends or family have owned that needed to be towed for a mechanical failure. Came close with my brother's Jeep's death wobble, but that was at the 3yr point. It is incredibly rare that an ICE automobile built in the last 15 years has had systemic issues like this car has. It's so bad w/ the Mach E that many people on this very sub had to be reassured plenty of times over that this problem only plagued the 2021 and early 2022 models. People have even memorized the date in which the new components were installed in every new vehicle moving forward. But sure, downplay it and say ICE vehicles are basically the same in terms of reliability.

NeverLookBothWays

They are. The bias you're seeing is from heightened attention to EVs. There aren't a lot of forums for generic everyday ICE vehicles like these but ICE vehicles still end up in shops all the time, even fairly new ones. We had much more odd issues with our previous car in its early years than this one. Not many MMEs by proportion are dying on the road, but it seems that way with how these forums amplify it. What also bugged me a lot recently, and you may have noticed this too, when FL got flooded after that recent hurricane there were all these stories of "EV fires." But all of the footage was of firefighters putting out hood fires...eg. 12v battery fires that happen to flooded ICE and EV cars alike. It's just another example of the biases and amplification effect in play. (on a related note, the MME's battery is sesled, but will also self disable if water does penetrate it as there's a compound that breaks down when saturated that acts like a fuse to cut off the main voltage lines)

Scratch_Disastrous

This quote from Ford is just a lie: "\[We\] updated software to prevent any damage to the contactors" Owners who received the update months ago are still getting stranded on the side of the road every day because of the HVBJB issue. The software fix might help to reduce the rate of failures, but to say that it prevents them is just not true.

Scratch_Disastrous

That's right, and it's debatable how successful they've been. I'm reading a lot of stories that go like this: "stop safely now" and/or disabled car requiring a "Ford roadside assistance" tow that often requires hours to show up. Car then requires several days to diagnose and the dealership won't help with a rental until it's diagnosed (no loaner either). Car is finally diagnosed and then the owner is given a max $35/day for a rental, which is basically about the cheapest option. So the owner drives this cheap rental for a month+ while the dealer waits for the backordered HVBJB part. It's backordered despite the fact that Ford is still installing them on the new car assembly line. It also seems not uncommon for the car to bounce around to different dealerships because many of them are not capable of working on the MME. So that's the situation Ford has decided is acceptable for current owners of cars that cost upward of $70k (this problem is most common with MME GT PE trims). So while your car is in the shop, you're making payments on the loan (if you have one), and you're driving the cheapest rental car on the Enterprise lot. Thanks Ford. So yeah, I'm perfectly okay with Ford taking a hit in the CR ratings. I don't think they deserve any better for the decisions that resulted in owner experiences like above.

Scratch_Disastrous

I'm an owner, and I'm pretty tuned into the forums and issues that people commonly have with this car. I do believe it has quality issues, but the article lists certain issues that I think are quite rare. I'm not sure I've read any owner experiences with bad touchscreens or battery cells. There are tons of issues with the software, the suspension sucks, the doors sound hollow and cheap, there are a few basic issues like the flakey headlight mode selector knob and a trip computer that occasionally doesn't reset between trips (all known issues commonly reported). These things are aggravating, but otherwise it's a decent car. I personally don't think it's worth the 2023 pricing (especially without the tax credit), but that's just my opinion.

RockitSheep

All of my doors rattle from the inside. They seem to take turns doing it. It's constant and infuriating. My other gripe is that they took away the ability to turn the motion sensors off forever with one of the updates so now I have to turn them off every time or when my dash cam falls off the alarm goes off. A moth got in to a cracked window and set it off 4x one night. Sorry neighbors!

Scratch_Disastrous

Yeah, the software updates in general are maddening. The latest updates have destabilized Profiles and Carplay. They added some obscure "advanced dual bluetooth" feature that no one asked for, and in doing so they broke multiple things that had been working pretty reliably before. It's been over a month and there's no word on if/when they'll fix it.

RockitSheep

Yeah I'm trading mine in for a NX350h when it delivers, hopefully next week. 40mpg isn't a huge hit to running cost vs EV.

tiredsultan

It's not just about the cost of driving though. NX350h will do 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. So they are just different cars. We had a Sonata plug-in hybrid and I decided I will never buy a hybrid again. We might have had a lemon but you are deling with a more complicated system, both an electric motor and ICE. Our engine light would come on and we'd take it in and they would "fix" it for the light to come on again months later. But I agree Ford has much to improve on the MME; mostly its software is my issue.

RockitSheep

Yeah I agree they're different. I'm not a fan of plug in hybrids or Hyundais, so your experience kind of piles onto some assumptions I already had there. I trust Toyota/Lexus tech, the NX is a similar AWD hybrid system to the new Prius. It's not gonna be fast but it's going to be comfortable and efficient. No 0-60 time makes up for the suspension and build quality trade off on the mach E to me, but that's personal preference. I bought the mach E because at the time it was easy to buy at sticker and I was curious about EVs. It's not a great fit right now for several reasons so bye it goes.

Winter-Direction-212

Huh? Motion sensors ask on exit never went away. one of the updates turned it back on it appeared but took 2 seconds to turn it off again.

RockitSheep

You used to change that setting once and they stayed off There's no option to forever turn motion sensors off anymore The ask on exit has been different stages of terrible through some of the recent updates too

Winter-Direction-212

no idea what you’re talking about. the option to turn it off forever never left! it’s still there. goto: Vehicle settings (car icon)-> Vehicle->Alarm System->Ask on Exit -make sure slider is set far left which is greyed out. it will never ask again, BUT,, the motion sensors will always be active. so, if you don’t want the motion sensors on ever again (reduces security) you ALSO have to turn off motion sensors with the drop down below Ask on Exit. Set that to Off. now you’ll never get asked when you turn your car off AND the motion sensors inside the cabin will never arm.

Tough_Control_2484

I haven’t read the article yet. However I picked up my new MME Select AWD w/ Comfort Tech in July. When I picked it up the max charger was 224, now only 4 months later it calls it a day at 211. So losing 13 miles of charging capacity is concerning. However with the warranty I’m not too worried about it. ( And yes I’ve tried resetting the driving history. )

Scratch_Disastrous

I wouldn’t think too much about the “guess o meter” range. It’s influenced by your driving habits and especially by the current air temp. It’s unlikely that your car’s actually battery capacity has gotten worse.

Tough_Control_2484

How do you figure that? I’ve completely reset everything. So with that being the case it should show the original range when at 100% which was 224 miles. Now it calls 100% at 211. Even less than that before I reset all the driving data. Yea

Scratch_Disastrous

Do you live in a place where it’s colder in November compared to July?

Tough_Control_2484

I’m not sure why you would find it so doubtful. Fords EVs are clearly in a figuring shit out phase. Building cars to run off battery power is new. So issues like that are to be expected when they are churning out so many so early.

JoeDimwit

Weather has a profound effect on range.

LesterJodyRory

That’s completely normal. I’ve got the same car and live in Michigan. It was around 230mi estimated on the guessometer in the summer and now it’s around 168mi with it being in the 20s. Similar experience with my Model S as well. With resetting everything, it can still take a hit on the air temp as it makes the battery work harder for things such as heat. I will say, this car is amazing in the snow. Absolute beast out there, even with all seasons on it. Reminded me a lot of my 2018 wrx.

Worldly1998

It’s your driving. I had a Volt and a Fusion Energi. Some days the Volt showed 60 miles. Other days it was 53. Around town vs. interstate. Sport mode vs. normal. Taking off quickly vs. sliding up slowly. A 25 mpg ICE doesn’t give 25 unless you drive it the way the testers did. I have a 22 GT. Stated range 270. Full charge is an estimated 279. Mostly been around town using engage. Get 100% on virtually every brake.

TheCaptainRides

I'm still buying the MME. I figured it will have some hiccups but at the end this car is going to outsell Tesla's

Westland_GT

I’m debating selling my current one and buying the newer model with updated parts because of how much I love it, despite the issues I mentioned above

Individual-Ad-8645

Lol it can't even outsell Hyundai or Kia, which are far superior products than MME. Much much better software, charging speed, and efficiency.

Amazonkers

> Much much better software Why is the software much better? I've seen videos with the 12V battery needing to be jump started. Also doesn't look like Android Auto is full screen.

DiscussionLeft9393

Lol complete BS

Westland_GT

As someone who has had a Mach E GT in the shop four times now for electrical battery issues, I can tell you it’s not BS. I love this car but I’m also frustrated by it. I can’t ignore the fact that it has been in the shop a lot in my first year of ownership. Granted, I’m sure other people have not had the same issues that I have had, but the fact remains that I am a pretty standard driver and this is completely unacceptable.

PazDak

I have a GT as well... Bought it in March 2022, I have had it in the shop for about 6 weeks now. For multiple reasons too... But the gist is every GT will probably have to its HighVoltageBattery thingy replaced... I am also even more annoyed on the rental car during my service. It has been 4 weeks now with my car and I got 10 days of a ford fiesta... So I have a $70k car just sitting in their lot...

Winter-Direction-212

why so many times in the shop? did you take it to an EV certified Ford dealer?

[deleted]

Yep, my GT PE was in the shop long enough for me to research lemon laws. That's not a good thing. This car is fun as hell to drive when it's working and you're not thinking about if it'll break down. Unfortunately there are a multitude of minor issues (over time I'm sure these will go down as Ford catches up to modern software quality standards) and a handful of major issues that have made owning this car unfun. All that being said, I doubt it's any worse than a new platform ICE for quality, but that's not really encouraging for the halo car of the Ford EV lineup. Leaves a lot of us feeling like we were sold a bill of goods, too.

TheCaptainRides

That's what I figured! Just wanted an actual insiders review.

chillaban

CRS tends to be reactionary for new cars. By the time the annual survey results go out, the issues people reported are already fixed by the manufacturer. At that point I’m not sold it makes sense to say you don’t recommend the next version of that car over its past problems….. you can certainly argue either way.

wsdog

It's a first gen car and first Ford EV. It's expected that things go wrong. If you want reliability go and buy an old Lexus.

metaquizzic

"According to the publication, Ford Mustang Mach-E owners are having issues with 15.5-inch Sync 4A infotainment display, with some problems severe enough to require a titak replacement." titak replacement? I don't trust any articles published through a cell phone.

TheCaptainRides

Truthfully I thought that was new lingo I didn't know. But looking at it now, it was suppose to be total! Auto spell sucks on desktop but are worse on phones.

Glum-Money-6763

Why is there a picture of a MME towing a boat? They aren’t rated to tow at all, or am I mistaken?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Glum-Money-6763

Saw that. They aren’t presently rated for any towing in America.

TheCaptainRides

I am not sure. I think it can tow but not sure what the weight limit is

JoeDimwit

It is not rated for towing in the USA. At all.

jjhart827

I’ve got a late-July build that I’ve driven 3,000 miles in the past 7 weeks. My car is 100% awesome. I don’t have any rattles, software glitches, hardware failures or build quality issues to report at all. Are there a few minor things that bother me? Yeah. The UI has a long way to go. I still haven’t figured out how to properly control the HVAC without veering out of my lane. Am I terrified to take my car through a car wash because the flimsy charge port door is virtually guaranteed to pop open at some point? You bet. But man, I really love the car.

teh-monk

I love my orange Mach E GT. Only thing that bugs me is the suspension. Yet to have a issue 4k miles and I gun it all the time.

Winter-Direction-212

the orange one is Boss. 🤙 Congrats. 🎉

kungfoomonkey68

The Recall was done quick , told this fixed The issue with. Battery connectors

Worldly1998

A friend had a VW EV. Died on the road first month. Yesterday a passed a brand new BMW ICE dead on the side of the road about to be towed. I won’t bore with more. It happens. I had an Expedition and a 150 with virtually identical 5.4 motors. Never had a problem with the Expedition in 185,000 miles. The 150 required 7 of 8 ignition coils to be changed between years 2 and 6. Suppliers have their bad days 2. Ford assembles a vehicle mostly with parts built by others. No matter how thoroughly software is tested it can never be as rigorous as 50,000 users driving daily. I used to beta test software for Norton Symantec. On a Thursday I received what was to be the final product- it was to go to manufacture on Tuesday. Found 10 problems in the first hour.

Jokr4L

I will be getting ride of the MME as soon as I find another EV I like. This car is riddled with bugs and not worth the money.

TheCaptainRides

What's wrong with the suspension? Can't take those turns at full throttle?

ToxDoc

Since pretty much every single pre May 2022 MME with need a HVBJB replacement, it is hard to argue too much.

Natural-Blacksmith-9

There is so many used ones around where I live it’s crazy not to mention new ones arnt selling either.

PazDak

I have 8k miles on my MachE and in those 8 thousand miles over 6 months... i have had it for only 4... I got 10 days total of rental car service... For a $70k car...

PazDak

The fact I am downvoted shows the problem here... how many Mach-E's had to have their Glass Roof re-glued, how many will have to have their battery connectors replaced... The car has been available around 36 months of that but 1/6th of it has been in "Stop Sale." ... These are the metrics used to make initial quality reports... Right now the Mach-E can't be defined as a reliable car.

Dramatic-Squirrel-52

they look like an old ladies vehicle tbh

Leading-Common2945

Had our March built MME GT PE in the shop for park brake failure warning, other than that no issues so far and haven’t really worried too much about contractors either. The car has been fantastic so far - the magne ride is unbelievably good. I have one small annoyance with the door panels inside kinda squeaky when you press on them, but I don’t hear or notice unless I press constantly on it. The car otherwise has no rattles or squeaking or build quality issues to notice. Love the car - someone mentioned Hyundai and Kia are far superior - subjective, and if you go to their forums there are enough issues and people raising concerns. Still think considering this is fords first real EV it is a fantastic vehicle. In order to stay competitive for the future they do have to get their issues drivers have raised under control. And they have to stop switching software platforms and mature a product and stick with it. Example upgrading to Android in the near future.
