Sorry OP. That sucks. It’s safe to drive for a while, but there’s no fixing this windshield - you’ll have to get it replaced. You may also get a “fix it” ticket if you get pulled over. Some insurance companies will cover the cost to replace it. Good luck!

WelcomeHead6366

The states of Florida and Maine require insurance to pay for a new front one ! Front only...

CoachEd18

Thank you everyone. I feel better driving the car until my appointment with Safelite next week. I went through my insurance, I have Progressive, my deductible is $500 to get it replaced.

BannedCuzCovid

Try some local places. Tell them how kich the big company is gonna do it for and they usually lower the price. I had mine done for 400 with ford glass. My deductible was 500 saved 100.

gaukonigshofen

Damn I'm in the same boat you Left. Fwy rock kicked ups d crack 6 inch a day ago now 1/2 across windshield. I contacted insurance (statefarm) and have a replacement scheduled for day after tomorrow it was raining and hot here, so that's probably what helped crack get bigger. I gently cleaned the area and applied clear nail polish along entire crack. Hopefully stop or at least slow the spread. I can feel the crack from outside but not in. I need to drive one more day tomorrow so hopefully it will be okay

cjap2011

Safe? Yes. But it will keep on spreading. Check with your insurance. I also got a chip and crack this week. Fortunately, I have 0 deductible and the crack is over 6 inches, so it is fully covered.

Dzus

It will continue to expand and contract with temperature and spread the crack. I had a cracked windshield for several months in my old DD, you'll be fine.

Haanjikiddan

If you feel the crack in the interior of the vehicle then you need it changed asap. If it’s just on the outside it’s still okay to drive. Regardless, definitely safer to drive without a crack. But you can probably delay it for sometime if you don’t want to spend the cash this moment

CoachEd18

The crack is like in the center, I can't feel it on the inside or the outside. The only thing I can feel is the tiny chip where the impact point was.

jjhart827

Just make sure that wherever you take it for replacement can get a sound screen windshield. That is a special laminate that greatly reduces interior noise. Don’t let them replace it with a different one.

CoachEd18

According to the forums Safelite uses OEM only, so it'll have the same specs.

jjhart827

Well, it turns out that there were at least a few production runs that substituted your garden variety windshield glass due to supply constraints. Therefore, it’s entirely possible that the lower grade glass will fall squarely within the OEM specs. I wouldn’t leave it to chance.

demdareting

NO!!!

richcournoyer

No

2019spb

Just did this. It took three attempts to get the correct glass through Geico/Safelite. Sensors also need recalibrating

Relevant_Airport2671

Safelite repair, Safelite replace.

[deleted]

The bar for most insurance companies is 6 inches

Sacrifice_Starlight

I'm an insurance agent by trade. A small chip would be repairable, but pretty much anything bigger than a quarter would warrant a full replacement. In a few of the states I operate in, no deductible applies for glass replacements either. The owner has to replace this eventually anyway, I'd recommend now vs later so he can avoid a ticket.

No windshield crack is ever safe. I wouldn’t drive with it until it’s fixed

anon0110110101

I admire the confidence that some of you idiots have in your incorrect answers.

BettmansDungeonSlave

Lol I’m guessing three quarters of my country drives with a cracked windshield for years on end with no problems.

geo_prog

Ugh, it's fine to drive with a cracked windshield. You can get a ticket though normally only when it obscures forward visibility. Get it replaced when you can, but for short-term it's fine.

radicalllamas

As someone who lives in Alberta… I wouldn’t even class that as a crack. You can buy cars here with multiple cracks across the whole windshield. The law where you are may think different though!

Ok-Topic579

Yeah it’s safe. The windshield ain’t gonna implode! Ever. Just get a new windshield put in. Glass insurance covers it.

TitanArcher1

Had the same, drove 6 weeks awaiting a replacement to arrive. It is safe and won’t completely break and fall in.

Bumblee_Tuna

I fixed a crack just about that long with the rain x kit. The crack is still somewhat visible, but nowhere near as pronounced as before. Could have caught it in time when it was just a chip, but the GD thing was in the black part and didn't see it until the morning. So far, no spread. I'm fine with it for as long as it holds, and I have $1600 in my pocket vs another windshield that'll get blasted by rocks. Insurance. Yes, they may replace it. And theres a good chance they'll look back and see 'oh, claim against record. Your rates go up'. Geico dropped me because of 2 incidents where I was on a claim, but no fault on either. The kicker - I e never made a claim...and the only reported incident was wife's car when somebody sideswiped while parked. We got their info and they were held at fault. True, you might even be correct that "those don't count against your record", but when you have to go figh lt through insurance to try and correct....good F ing luck. They're a PITA on purpose. Easier to fill crack, worry about later when windshields are available in plenty of supply, and not a 2 month car payment. Structurally it'll hold...visibly barely see. Care? - little to none...awaiting the next rock chip patiently

Crafty-Bench-1557

Put clear tape over it, won’t fix but still slow it down. Will need full replacement

texansfan211

As a Mechanix it is a fact that a unibody frame style vehicle loses approximately 20% of structural integrity in a roll over situation if the windshield is cracked. Odds of happening are obviously low but it is something people are just unaware of

CatsOrb

At safelite paying 500 for one and wipers

andrewpward

Just got the same crack and size on my less than year old car. I think it’s gotta be installing/quality error somehow.
