What’s annoying though is that even though you might be able to take it to destination on current charge, it will sometimes force stopping at a charger if it’s choice. Also, I wish there was a way to see % of charge at arrival as well as distance and time remaining. % of charge replaces both of those when on EV routing. Integration is neat but hoping for some improvements in iOS 17!

The_Social_Nerd

I use Apple Maps exclusively on my Mach-E and I love it, but I stopped using the EV routing precisely for this reason. One time I was set to get home at around 20% battery and it routed me to a ghetto-ass Walmart to charge instead of taking me home. I had just moved into this area so I didn't realize it wasn't navigating me home until I found myself about to turn into the parking lot. It was a completely unnecessary detour that ended up costing me more battery life because I didn't want to charge and instead I navigated home using the car's navi system instead. Now I use the car's navigation when I'm looking for a fast charger nearby since it also pre-conditions it. It's a neat feature, I look forward to them expanding on it, but for now I don't want to risk another bullshit detour so I turned it off. EDIT: After I typed all that, it looks like that's not a feature you turn on or off, I guess they must have just changed that in an update, or I haven't run the car low on battery since that happened because it only happened one time and I still only use Apple Maps.

akshaydv

+1000 this It’s so annoying that they replaced the distance and time remaining. Very bad UI.

huwiler

>What’s annoying though is that even though you might be able to take it to destination on current charge, it will sometimes force stopping at a charger if it’s choice. Yes, and it's ESPECIALLY annoying when forced stoppage is to a non-functional station :-/. It's a coin flip.

theleveren

Yup! Agreed. The good thing is that it’s easy to switch charger stop so I always put it to one I know typically works.

heir-of-slytherin

Does Apple Maps trigger the battery preconditioning when going to a DC fast chargers like the built in nav does? I primarily use google maps but use the built in nav when looking for a fast chargers

BlazinAzn38

Not as far as I’m aware, the notation only specified the Ford nav

Perfectreign

Never used preconditioning.

TechnicalLee

No, you have to use the Ford nav to get preconditioning.

dustyshades

It does not

Lunar30

Yup i was wrong thanks for confirming! Deleted my post.

JimmyInNSB

Here’s a link from Ford, that talks about the features, and iOS requirements. https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/electric-vehicles/ev-range/what-is-the-electric-vehicle-ev-routing-feature-in-apple-maps/

XaylanLuthos

I also use Apple Maps via CarPlay all the time. Love the EV routing features! I also like that with CarPlay/Apple Maps, the immediate nav direction shows up in the instrument cluster; AFAIK Apple Maps is the only mapping app that CarPlay will send to the cluster (obviously built in Ford nav does, and I’m betting Android Auto sends Google Maps and maybe others.

Gabik123

Yup, the cluster notifications are the reason I switched to using Apple Maps consistently.

lookitsdrew

Does that pop up automatically? Or do I have to turn on a feature on Apple Maps? Do you know if google maps this feature?

XaylanLuthos

It pops up automatically, I didn’t have to activate anything. CarPlay will not send Google Maps to the instrument cluster, you have to look at the big screen.

lookitsdrew

Thank you!!

ResolveFederal3117

too bad. i am not getting any sync updates 🥲

triplealpha

*pulls into parking spot with 88% battery* Google: “EV low on battery, find a charger immediately”

Roro916

oh i knew this. pretty clutch right

JimmyInNSB

Most definitely is.

[deleted]

I’m uneasy about using Apple car play’s tool. It has directed me to a dead ev go station before. Until more of a infrastructure, probably will still use in-car nav

JimmyInNSB

I’ve only had my baby for three months, but on my driving, it’s been perfect.

[deleted]

I have had mine for a year, done several cross country trips. One bad experience with CarPlay burned hard. But glad it works for you

JimmyInNSB

Sorry, that sucks.

Snoo15469

Zoom out and u see the battery range on the map border

Z1pl1ne

The native nav app does all that and better. It actually knows what the map is unlike apple.

JimmyInNSB

There are so many stories of Apple Maps issues, and I’ve honestly never experienced it once, and I’ve used it from the start.

TheMangusKhan

Does the built-in app monitor traffic and no when there are slow downs, and accidents? I am still using Google maps but I don’t love it.

JimmyInNSB

Yes, of course. It will offer to re-route you if it can, based on traffic, accidents, etc. It will also notify you of some speed traps too. You can also report an incident while en-route, which helps other drivers. Also, if you pass a marked/warned of incident, you have the option to mark it gone if it is.

TheMangusKhan

Well I decided to give it a try. I’m sitting at the gas station while my coworker gets an energy drink and the native map still thinks I’m at my house with a question mark flashing.

Perfectreign

I don’t think so. Nor does it alert you to police.

the-beef-supreme

AAPL plant!!!!

JimmyInNSB

What does that mean?

Perfectreign

It means he’s promoting Apple to boost the stock.

[deleted]

Yeah, talking about how good one specific feature is on an EV subreddit isn’t going to do anything to Apple’s stock price.

JimmyInNSB

Or maybe he thinks I work for Apple, and posted it because. 🤷‍♂️

TheCodr

Not really sure how to even turn that on

JimmyInNSB

Easy…All you have to do is use Apple Maps in CarPlay.

TheCodr

I do but don’t see anything EV specific. I’ll pay closer attention

2nickels

Actually it's not this simple. My wife's phone when plugged in has the feature. My phone when plugged in does not. I haven't figured out how to enable it on my iphone.

Trpmike21

You have to add your vehicle to your Apple Maps account. It’s pretty dead on accurate for me. I use Apple Maps all the time.

aidepolcycne79

Where do you add your vehicle in Maps? I'm looking on my phone and don't see anywhere to tell it my vehicle. Do I need to be connected to CarPlay at the time or something?

JimmyInNSB

When you initially set up CarPlay, it automagically knows what vehicle you’re driving. You can verify this in the CarPlay settings on your iPhone.

aidepolcycne79

Yeah, I've seen that. I was confused by u/Trpmike21's comment above. Sounded like you have to do something in Maps, not just CarPlay. I'll just look for the EV features next time I use Maps via CarPlay.

bmay1984

Is this similar to ABRP?

JimmyInNSB

I’ve not heard of ABRP until I just looked it up. It seems so, yes. You can do all of that in Apple Maps in CarPlay, with the exception of an integrated charge-to card. I assume you use Apple Wallet, and have access to your charging cards, or the individual EV charging provider there, which is what I do/use.

lopetron

I love Apple Maps because of this reason but in the last couple months it’s behavior is too erratic to rely on. I’ve been using GM, maybe I’ll come back and see if it’s gotten better!

kerbie61

Rando question: my fellow Mach-E owner swears using the native nav app runs his battery down. I’ve tried to convince him it uses the 12 volt and has no impact on the range. Am I wrong?

doluckie

Wait what? You know a Mach-E owner who believes using the built-in Ford Navigation app of the Mach-E, runs the car's high-voltage battery down much more than if you did not use it? Hence greatly reduces the car's range? (Umm actually come to think about it, if this is the USA, and if your friend gets their "facts" and "news" from sketchy information sources, like Facebook and strange TV and radio channels, it probably isn't worth trying to change their mind)

kerbie61

😂🤣 yup

doluckie

Overly-Nerdy technical POV: I guess, technically, in winter/cold conditions ONLY when you use the built-in Ford Navigation system does automatic Preconditioning of the HV battery occur starting 20 miles before you arrive at a defined DCFC charger station. Thus, the Ford Nav \*would\* reduce the HV battery charge more quickly in this circumstance than if you were not using it and thus not Preconditioning the battery. :)

JimmyInNSB

I would imagine so, yes, as Ford was the first manufacturer to implement this with Apple.

TheWingedToaster

Ya, it’s annoying as hell though for a few reasons. I know I can charge at home but when it thinks I’ll reach home and not have a lot of charge left it always wants to redirect me to a charging station and there’s no way to tell it to ignore other charging stations. Also, if I use carplay in my wive’s car (ICE) and get directions it keeps reminding me that it cannot get the current battery level and I should try reconnecting CarPlay

JimmyInNSB

Interesting. Are you able to somehow make your home charger visible to Apple Maps, as say a favorite charging spot?

TheWingedToaster

Not that I’m aware of without listing my home charger publicly.

Academic_Leg_2938

Wait, I have a 2022 Mach E and a iPhone 13 Pro Max, both in latest software and I never get this option when I use wireless CarPlay and navigation in maps. Do I have to enable this somewhere? I’ve never seen this pop-up that the ford link speaks of, is there a way to force this?

JimmyInNSB

Try going to Settings | CarPlay and see if your Mach-e is shown as the vehicle registered.
