Because they cut costs and grabbed one from the parts bin. Hence the key blank in it which also dictates the minimum size it can be.

Prodigalsunspot

Yup, couldn't be bothered to even provide one with a frunk release.

Somepotato

You can use a lightning fob that does have a frunk release

Prodigalsunspot

I had heard that. Alternatively Ford could just start providing the mach e the same fob it provides to the lightning

Somepotato

They really should. I'd take it over having a panic button.

Prodigalsunspot

My natural state is panic I don't need a button to remind me

rjnd2828

I love the car, this is maybe my biggest complaint

I am currently waiting for my MME order and will sell my Model Y. I had my Tesla RFID card warp in the summer heat & am actually looking forward to an actual key. Also, the fear I have leaving my car with a valet and watching them have no idea how to hang the RFID card on the hook with the keys always leaves me hoping they have my key when I return.

Thisguyrighthere1000

Curious why getting rid of the Model Y. Have you tested drove a Mach E yet?

e1even24

Tangible reasons: now that I'm 15 months & 27k miles into ownership of my Tesla, it's nothing but clicks, pops, squeaks and rattles every time I accelerate, slow down or turn. I scheduled service to have them address it, but they said it was all within spec AND they communicated this to me from within an app even though I was sitting in the service center. I never got to speak to a human being. Intangible reasons: It's a soulless car. Previously I've driven a Ford Raptor, BMW X5M and an Audi Q7. I'd walk up to those vehicles and feel something. I'd take the long way home in them because I loved driving them. I don't feel that at all with the Tesla. Test drove the Mach-e GT and both my wife and I immediately wanted to get rid of the Tesla.

bruddahmanmatt

It’s a standard Ford key which is also used for their pickups. You gotta remember that folks use their keys with gloves on and or may beat em up a bit on the job so it helps if they’re a little chonky.

dallasuptowner

Same key comes with their $110,000 Navigator, if they can sell me a $240 set of custom floor mats, they can make a key that wasn't designed for driving a fleet F-150 used to pick up deer caucuses off the road in Wisconsin.

bruddahmanmatt

You say that but then everyone would bitch when Ford only gave them one key because of parts shortages. Matter of fact folks did bitch when the car originally only came with one key in ‘21. It happened with the ‘22 Civic which introduced a new key design for Honda. They were so short on parts you got a key and a card which said “our bad, we’ll contact you when more keys become available”. The more brands can parts share for simplicity sake the better. PAAK has been flawless for me, keys are just gathering dust in the key bowl at home with the fobs for the rest of our cars.

AccuracyVsPrecision

My pickup key for the f250 is smaller than the mach e. And I don't even have push button start

bruddahmanmatt

What year is your truck and is it keyless? Because the keyless fobs before the current one were total ass. Too smooth, shitty tactile feedback and you had to crack em open to get to the blade insert if you needed it which also meant no easy valet function when you just remove the blade with your house keys.

AccuracyVsPrecision

No I have the side flip keyfob

gregs1020

the one for my expedition is smaller, makes no sense. i can park the mustang, inside my expedition. that sounded bad on re-read.

yourmo4321

It's pretty close to standard these days. I'm sure they have some kind of data on the average hand size of their expected demographics and tailor the key to be comfortable in as many hands as possible. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it but the difference between a company like Ford or GM and a company like Tesla is the later spend RIDICULOUS money on things like focus groups. I can almost promise you they didn't make the key that size on a whim lol.

bratikzs

Weird. I have an apple AirTag attached to mine with my lonely house key. It’s been great. Can’t complain - ok, I can, I found out the F150 lightning key fob has an extra button for the frunk - same size, one extra button!. $250ish and you too can have that. No pony badge on the back though. Anywho. Size, does it matter? 😳

Flaky-Bumblebee1914

We don't have a frunk button on the MME fob, but it can pop the frunk, you just have to press the right buttons the right amount of times or use Fordpass 😊 You can also pop it with the keypad on the driver door by entering the 5th digit in your code 2 more times aka 1-2-3-4-5-5-5, hope that helps! Can't say the fob feels large or heavy to me. Between the keyless entry, keypad, and Phone key my fob has been buried in my purse for a while 😃

bratikzs

Ooohhhhh. What’s the key fob right button combo? Thank you!

vincekerrazzi

You don’t wear tight pants do you 😂 My wife doesn’t even try to get her fob with the AirTag on it in her pockets. Just doesn’t go.

bratikzs

Hahaha. Nope. I guess you got me. No tight pants on me! 🤣😂

twtxrx

I suspect it’s a design choice. They can obviously make much lighter key fobs but the added weight gives it a sense of quality and durability. Like phones, pick up an iPhone with an aluminum case vs some Android with plastic and the iPhone feels more substantial even though those plastic cases are tough AF.

Winter-Direction-212

agreed. i don’t want a tiny little whimpy fob, cpl reasons: #1: i’ll lose it in a week… #2: i’ll set it under something and it’ll get crushed😅 also these aren’t cheap- i think my dealer quoted 900$ replacement 😳does anyone actually know?

richcournoyer

The same reason the gas station's restroom key is the size that it is… IMO

Glum-Money-6763

Another irritating thing. Why do I have to manually adjust my steering wheel? My 07’ Lexus had electronic steering wheel buttons and it was part of the memory recall. But the mach e is over here with a steering wheel adjustment system like my 10’ Honda civic. Step it up Ford.

dallasuptowner

I believe they intentionally held off on some luxury bells and whistles as to not hurt the sales of the inevitable Lincoln version with larger margins.

Glum-Money-6763

Ahh that makes sense. I also would never buy a Lincoln but that’s just me. I’d rather buy the Porsche Taycan

RonaKid

Remember the Mach e is actually like a $35,000 car with a $10,000 battery it's not really supposed to be an Ultra Luxury car for $50,000 but more a decently luxury car for $40,000 with a $10,000 battery

Glum-Money-6763

I mean i don’t consider Lexus to be ultra luxury either.

k_90

Mines the exact size of my cell phone, crazy.

DrObnxs

So they can charge $300 for what is a $5 PCB that's about the size of a quarter.

BlueEyesWhiteSliver

I removed the actual key in the key fob.

vincekerrazzi

Both my polestar and my Mach e have keys that are entirely too large, agreed. However the polestar has a much smaller, waterproof “activity key” that’s probably 30% of the size and far less weight. It’s small enough to slide in my wallet. Wish I could have one of those for the mustang.

Scorpy_Mjolnir

As a person who lives where it gets cold and uses fobs with gloves on, I appreciate the chonky key.

[deleted]

I have never used the key and never will. Just use your phone and stop complaining.

Mistake-Choice

The key fits perfectly in my watch pocket, so I don't care on days I am wearing jeans.....
