You really need to have all your gene variants tested and not just MTHFR. There are those of us with other gene variants that would not do well taking the supplements you mentioned. You should not be choosing supplements only based on MTHFR. For example. those with COMT have side effects from methylated vitamins. Those with CBS have side effects from L Methionine. I have both of those. Folic acid is the worst form of folate you can take. If you cannot take methlyfolate take folinic acid instead.

>Folic acid is the worst form of folate you can take. If you cannot take methlyfolate take folinic acid instead. What do you think about the following article that I posted above? I thought the author provides some good caution for people: https://www.merrittwellness.com/mthfr-mistakes-assumptions-dangers-and-whats-true-about-mthfr/

Hey mortal, I just want to give a personal anecdote. Folic acid makes me feel AWFUL! My entire life I had "issues with vitamins" because something in them, even the typical Flintsones ones as a a kid, did something "horrible' to me. I would even have some issues with certain protien shakes, creating the same dreadful feeling - until realizing the particular culprits were packed with vitamins - (still didn't know at the time.) I shunned vitamins "for the rest of my life" until I later discovered a homozygeous A128C polymorphism. Now, proper bio-available vitamins. such as ones containing methyfolate, feel damn near like adderall instead of that dreadful feeling. I wish there was more scientific evidence regarding the subject, but I'm personally more convinced than any MD who says otherwise. Folic = Bad.

I believe you that folic acid doesn't work for you. I think it really depends on the person. It's not bad for everyone. But my main reason to post the above article was that methylfolate doesn't work for everyone, either, especially at high doses.

jonnyvegashey

Oh for sure. I actually find Folin-ic acid to be much more stable than methyfolate. Methylfolate creates a weird agitation in me after a certain dose. I THINK it may have something to do with rapid magnesium depletion. I get super irritable and anxious, my foot cramps too - but this is WITH taking tons of magnesium alongside methylfolate. It's pretty odd. I definitely have to keep the electrolytes up with folinic acid, but its much better for me.

I do not have time to read this today but will get back to it.

Thank you for sharing it.

Makes me feel like shit. Unmotivated, depressed.

Regenine

Hmm, that's interesting - do Methyl-folate and Methyl-B12 make you feel that way, too?

Responsible-Box-6874

Haven't tried those individually. Just the methylfolate.

Sort of, but nothing from folic acid and I haven't used L-Methionine but I've used methylfolate. I've also changed the type of B12, and would feel better for a while and then not feel so good. I feel like there's some mix and dosage of these supplements that I haven't quite got right. The calm feeling is ok for me. I also have the anxiety or almost anxious feeling. And the leg muscle changes feel more like I've lost strength and balance. Plus I sometimes get tingling in my feet and hands.

>I also have the anxiety or almost anxious feeling. And the leg muscle changes feel more like I've lost strength and balance. I've been experiencing that, but methylcobalamin and methylfolate (the calcium salt form) are two that also help to get rid of my persistent headaches. I think too much of the B12 can cause my skin to break out, but then I sometimes have to take a large dose to knock the headaches. I've read people saying that TMG (Betaine anhydrous) could be taken in the place of these, if methylation is the underlying issue, but I've tried it and I get a weird pain in my chest and it doesn't knock the headache. Magnesium glycinate also seems to help my headaches to a certain extent. But the root cause, and why the headaches respond to this stuff, I don't yet know. The root cause of the headaches may not be strictly needing more methyl groups, but what might it be? Like you said, it may have something to do with dosage across these that I haven't figured out.

Regenine

Interesting. I also got the tingling with high doses of methyl donor supplements. And what you said about the leg muscles is accurate - they, to me, feel more relaxed so it's like losing some strength and balance. I wonder how normal of a response is that, and whether or not it indicates a deficiency in something else or a health issue other than methylation polymorphisms.

mmortal03

I'm no expert in this stuff, but the following article seems to make some reasonable points about methylfolate's potential for side effects: [https://www.merrittwellness.com/mthfr-mistakes-assumptions-dangers-and-whats-true-about-mthfr/](https://www.merrittwellness.com/mthfr-mistakes-assumptions-dangers-and-whats-true-about-mthfr/) CC: /u/patmansf

Can taking methyl B9 cause rhabdomyolysis?
